2 Kings 2-3: The Lord revealed to Elisha and other prophets that Elijah would be taken up to heaven in a whirlwind. Elisha said to Elijah "Let me inherit a double share of your spirit." Then a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. The spirit of Elijah then came to rest on Elisha and he began to do miracles by the power of the Lord.
Holy Spirit of God, please increase your influence in my life

My recording of this reading

Psalm 23: The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose. Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my drooping spirit. He guides me along the right path. He is true to his name. If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear. You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort. You have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes. My head you have anointed with oil. My cup is overflowing. Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord's own house shall I dwell for ever and ever.
Thank you, Lord, for being my good shepherd

Listen

Colossians 2.9-18: In Christ's body lives the fullness of divinity. In him, you too find fulfillment. In baptism, you were buried with him and then raised to new life. Our real life is life with and in Christ. Be careful of people who are always going on about some vision they have had, giving such visions more importance than Christ himself
Jesus, may my focus always be on you

Listen

Matthew 15.1-20: Some religious leaders asked Jesus "Why do your disciples ignore many external practices of our religion?" Jesus answered, with the words of the prophet Isaiah: "This people honors me with external lip-service, while their hearts are far from me." Jesus also said "It's not certain foods or lack of washing  that makes a person unclean. It's evil in the  heart that makes a person unclean. Evil intentions like murder, adultery, fornication, theft, perjury, slander. These are the things that make a person unclean."
Jesus, please  clean my heart

Reflection: Psalm 23 has to be one of the most beautiful prayers ever composed .... with layers of meaning (e.g. "restful waters" = baptism; "banquet" = Eucharist)

2 Kings 1: Ahaziah, king of Israel, was seriously ill after a fall. He tried to send messengers to the temple of a false god to ask about his future. But the Lord sent Elijah the prophet to intercept the messengers and tell them that the king would die. The king sent 50 soldiers to arrest Elijah but as they approached Elijah, fire from heaven destroyed them. The king sent another 50 soldiers. They too were destroyed by fire from heaven. A third group of 50 was sent. They begged Elijah to spare them. The Lord told Elijah to go with them to the king. Elijah then told the king to his face that he would soon die because he had tried to ask a false god about his future. Not long after this, Ahaziah died.
Dear Lord, please don't let us ever get involved with false religion

My recording of this reading

Psalm 22: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? I call to you for help, but day and night you give no reply. I am a worm and not a man. Everyone who sees me makes fun of me. They taunt me: "He trusted in the Lord, why doesn't the Lord help him?" Like water I am poured out, my bones no longer connected. My throat is parched, my tongue sticks to my jaws. Many evil people attack me.
They make holes in my hands and my feet. They await my death. They divide my clothing among them, they throw a dice for my robe. Yet I know Lord, that  you are good and holy. I know how you heard the cries of our ancestors and you helped them. It was you who took me from the womb and entrusted me to my mother's breast. To you I was committed from my birth, from my mother's womb you have been my God. Lord, I trust in you even now. I trust you will not scorn my prayer. Even now I praise you as my Creator. May all the nations know and worship you.

Lord, please help people who are in big trouble right now, especially people whose lives are in danger

Colossians 2.6-8: You must live your whole life according to the Christ you have received - Jesus the Lord. You must be built on him and held firm by the faith you have been taught. Make sure no one deceives you with any teaching based on the principles of this world instead of on Christ
Jesus, please protect people from false teaching

Listen

Matthew 14.34-36: When Jesus got out of the boat on the other side of the lake, people recognized him and news of his presence spread quickly. From all around that area, sick people were brought to him. The sick people just wanted to touch his clothing. All those who touched his clothing were healed

c.f. readings for Sunday 6

Jeremiah 17.5-8: The Lord says this: "A curse on people who put their trust in humans, who rely on things of flesh, whose  hearts turn from the Lord. They are like dry scrub in the wastelands: if good comes, they have no eyes for it, they settle in the parched places of the wilderness, a salt land, uninhabited. A blessing on people who put their trust in the Lord, with the Lord for their hope. They are like a tree by the waterside that thrusts its roots to the stream: when the heat comes it feels no alarm, its foliage stays green; it has no worries in a year of drought, and never ceases to bear fruit."

Psalm 1: Happy the person who avoids evil and evil entertainment. Happy the person who reads and meditates on God's words. Such a person is like a tree planted beside a river, getting plenty of nourishment, bearing plenty of fruit. Such a person is on the Way of Life. People who do evil are on the Way of Death
Dear Lord, please help me do good and avoid evil

 Listen

Luke 6.20-26: Jesus said to his disciples "Blessed are you who are poor: yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry: you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now: you shall be happy. Blessed are you when people hate you because of me: your reward will be great in heaven. But alas for you who are rich: your consolation is only in this world. Alas for you who have plenty to eat: you shall go hungry. Alas for you who laugh now: you shall mourn and weep".
Jesus, please help me to give more time and importance to the things that really matter

 Listen

Reflection on the above readings:  On the one hand a curse, the Way of Death. On the other hand a blessing, the Way of Life. This is the fundamental choice we face right through life, from our earliest to our final days. As individuals, as groups, as nations

1 Kings 22: Some false prophets encouraged the king of Israel and the king of Judah to go to war. Micah, a true prophet of the Lord,
warned the kings not to go to war. The men of Israel and Judah were defeated in the war. Ahab, the king of Israel, died in the war.

Dear Lord, please don't let false prophets deceive the world

My recording of this reading

Psalms 20-21: May the Lord protect and help you, may he give you your heart's desire and fulfil every one of your plans. Some trust in chariots or horses, but we trust in the Lord.
Lord, may our plans and hopes be acceptable to you. Please bless our plans

Listen

Colossians 1.24 - 2.2: As I sit in my prison, I am at peace in my suffering, offering up my suffering to Christ for the sake of his body, the Church. God chose me to reveal to you his sacred message: Christ, your hope of glory,  is among you. My aim is to bind you together in love, and to keep you growing in your knowledge of God's plan for your lives
"Bind us together, Lord, Bind us together, With cords that cannot be broken, Bind us together, Lord, Bind us together, Bind us together in Love"
  (song)
Listen

Matthew 14.22-33After feeding the crowd with 5 loaves and 2 fish, Jesus told his disciples to go by boat across the nearby lake. Jesus stayed to send the crowds away. Then he went up into the hills to pray. When darkness came, the boat was far from land, but it was battling large waves caused by a strong head-wind. Jesus then walked on the water towards the boat. He called out to his disciples "Courage. It is I. Don't be afraid." Peter answered "Lord, if it is you, tell me to walk on the water to you."  Jesus said "Come". Peter then started walking on the water, but he became afraid and began to sink. "Lord, save me" he called out. Jesus took him by the hand and helped him to keep walking on the water. "Man of little faith, why did you doubt?" asked Jesus. As they got into the boat, the wind stopped. The men in the boat bowed to Jesus and said "You really are the Son of God".
Jesus, please help me not to lose faith in you

Listen

Reflection: Focus on Jesus, not on life's "waves"/problems .... and we will stay afloat!

Today is a good day to pray for everyone with the Covid-19 virus, because today is the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes ... World Day of the Sick - for which Pope Francis has published a special letter, here. Beautiful old song by Andy Williams: The Village of Saint Bernadette

Yesterday with Rocky and social worker Ricky from Gingko NGO, and with MercyHK social worker Simon and his helper A-Ming, I attended the funeral service at Kwai Fong crematorium of one of our Yau Ma Tei homeless guests who passed away a few weeks ago .... a 71 year old man who a long time ago was a drug addict, then spent many years at a Christian drug treatment centre (first as a patient then as a volunteer) and who for the past 6 months has been a volunteer helping both Gingko and MerchHK. A real gentleman ....always helpful and kind and patient, never complaining, never talking about his own health situation, wanting to stay active until the end. May his prayers in Heaven help us to imitate his beautiful spirit!

Yesterday at Kwai Fong I saw a line of around 500 people waiting for up to several hours to have a Covid test in a sports field with only a small number of testing facilities. A situation repeated in other parts of HK. See photo in this report. And people even selling queue tickets!  Many people from all sides of politics are criticising the bunch of clowns running our government circus who did not anticipate this situation and prepare for it properly. And check this video taken from a bus!!!

c.f. Readings for Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes

Isaiah 62-66: The Lord says: "My eyes are drawn to the humble and contrite person who lovingly meditates on my word. Towards Jerusalem I will send peace, flowing like a river. I am going to gather the nations of every language. All peoples will know and love me
Lord, please give me more love for the Bible. Please give the world more peace. Please help all peoples know and love you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 87: On the holy mountain is Jerusalem, the Lord's cherished city. Of you are told glorious things, O city of God. All nations are called to serve and love the Lord. And Jerusalem shall be called their spiritual mother, for all shall be her children. In Jerusalem everyone will be welcome and find a home.
Lord, may Jerusalem be a place of peace and prayer for all peoples

 Listen

Revelation 12.1-6: A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman, dressed in the sun, standing on the moon, crowned with 12 stars. She was giving birth to a child, and she cried out in the pain of childbirth. Then a second sign appeared: a huge red dragon, which wanted to eat the child. The woman gave birth to a son, the ruler of all nations. The son was taken straight up to heaven, to God on his throne. The woman escaped to safety in the desert, to a place prepared for her by God.
Jesus, protect us from Satan who goes round like a hungry lion wanting to eat us
 Listen

John 2.1-11: Jesus, his mother and his disciples were guests at a wedding at Cana in Galilee. The wine ran out, so Jesus' mother said to him "They have no wine". Jesus replied "Woman, my time for doing special things has not yet come". His mother said to the servants "Do whatever he tells you". There were 6 big containers there, used for holding water. Each could hold about 35 liters. Jesus said to the servants "Fill the containers with water" and they filled them up. Jesus then said "take some out and give it to the man in charge of the banquet".  When the man tasted the water, it had turned to wine. The man called the bridegroom and said "You have kept the best wine until now". This was the first public miracle done by Jesus
Jesus,  help me to do whatever you tell me to do

 Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Without Mary's request, Jesus would not have changed water to wine. Our prayer requests also can get "water" (e.g. sickness) changed to wine (good health)

Then I went to the HK Management Association office in Tsim Sha Tsui to enrol another prison for a course. 1 Kings 20-21: King Ahab wanted the vineyard of Naboth, but Naboth refused to sell his ancestral inheritance. Ahab's wife Jezebel then had Naboth murdered and Ahab took the vineyard. The prophet Elijah  confronted Ahab for his crime. Ahab then repented of his crime.
Dear God, please help us respect other people's property

My recording of this reading

Psalm 19: The heavens proclaim the glory of God, the starry skies are the work of his hands. The stars can't speak, but they are God's handwriting. The sun is God's love shining on the whole world. The universe is a masterpiece, and so is God's law which shines in our hearts. The precepts of the Lord enlighten our lives each day. The law of the Lord gives joy and wisdom to our hearts. The decrees of the Lord are to be desired more than gold, they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. But  often we are unaware of our errors. Lord, please protect us from making mistakes.
Lord, may the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart  be pleasing to you

Colossians 1.15-20: Christ is the image of the unseen God. In him were created all things. All things were created through him and for him. Before anything was created, he existed. He holds all things in unity. The Church is his body. He is its head. God wants all things to be reconciled through him who brought peace by his death on the Cross
Jesus, God the Son become man, may our world find reconciliation and peace in you

Matthew 14.13-21: Once after Jesus had been healing and teaching many people all afternoon,  his disciples said to him
"It's getting late and the people need to go and eat". Jesus replied "They don't need to go. You feed them". The disciples said "We have only 5 loaves and 2 fish". Jesus got the people to sit on the grass. There were about 20,000 of them. Then he blessed the loaves and fish. He handed the loaves and fish to his disciples. His disciples gave them to the crowd. Everyone had plenty to eat. They even had 12 baskets of leftovers.

Jesus, please make leaders do more to help the starving people of the world

1 Kings 19:  Elijah once spent a night in a cave. The Lord then told him to stand at the mouth of the cave. Then there was a mighty wind that shattered trees and rocks. But the Lord was not in the wind. Then there was an earthquake. But the Lord was not in the earthquake. Then there was a gentle breeze. And the Lord was in the breeze. Not long after this Elijah called Elisha to become his follower.
Dear Lord, please help us be aware of your presence in our lives

My recording of this reading

Psalms 17-18: Lord,  when trouble breaks out on every side, please protect and help me. For you are my strength, my rock, my fortress, my savior. I love you, Lord who save me because you love me. Lord, you are my lamp who lightens my life. I will praise you among the nations.
Lord, you are worthy of all praise

 Listen

Colossians 1.9-14: I pray that you will continue to grow in your Christian life, a life full of good deeds. Never give in when trials come, but bravely, even joyfully, carry your cross each day. Keep on thanking the Father who has rescued us from the power of darkness, and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we gain our freedom, the forgiveness of our sins
Father, thank you for letting me be a Christian. Help me be a good Christian

Listen

Matthew 14.1-12: Not long after Jesus began traveling and teaching, King Herod arrested John the Baptist and put him in prison. This was because John had told Herod he was breaking the Law by living with Herodias,  his brother's wife. During a birthday party for Herod, the daughter of Herodias danced. Her dancing so pleased Herod that he said he would give her anything she wanted. Herodias told her to ask for the head of John the Baptist on a dish. Herod then had John beheaded. John's disciples came and buried the body.
Jesus, please give the world good leaders, and protect people from bad leaders like Herod

 Listen

Reflection: God's default position is "rescue" (Psalms & Colossians) but then can come a special time when, for a higher purpose, sacrifice is called for (... the death of John the Baptist ... the death of Jesus)
