Tues June 7

Two more abandoned Filipina mothers and their babies are due to stay at a MercyHK shelter from tonight. The number of such cases coming to our notice is growing and is very disturbing. On a happier note, several of our domestic helper guests have returned to the Philippines or found new employers in the past week. Our overnight total remains around the 20 mark.

Job 18-19: Bildad then said that Job's suffering was caused by his sins. Job repeated that he was innocent of any wrong-doing.
He added: "I am sure of three things: my God lives, my God will rescue me, and I will see my God's face."

Dear God, I believe you live and that someday I will see your face

My recording of this reading

Psalms 120-121: I call to the Lord in the hour of my distress: "Lord save me from people who speak with lying lips". Long enough have I been dwelling with those who hate peace. I am for peace, but they are for fighting. I lift up my eyes to the mountains. From where shall come my help? My help shall come from the Lord who made heaven and earth. The Lord is our guard and our shade. Day and night we shall not be afraid. The Lord will guard our going and coming both now and forever.
Lord, please protect us from danger, day and night

Listen

James 5.13-18: If one of you is in trouble, pray. If you are happy, sing a psalm. If someone is sick, send for the elders of the church. They must anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord, and pray over him. The prayer of faith will save the sick man and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven. Confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, and this will heal you. The heartfelt prayer of a good person is very powerful. Elijah prayed for rain, and rain came
Jesus, please help sick people have the opportunity to receive the "Anointing of the Sick"

Listen

Mark 7.24-30: Jesus went to the district of Tyre. A foreign woman fell at his feet and begged him to expel a devil from her daughter. Jesus said "The children (= Jews) should be fed first. It's not right to give the children's food to the house dogs (= foreigners)". She replied "Ah yes, Sir, but the house dogs under the table can eat the children's scraps". Jesus said to her "For expressing such great faith, you can go home happy. The devil has gone out of your daughter". She went home and found the child lying on a bed, and the devil gone
Jesus, please give sick people more faith in you

Before going to the Dr Jesus Centre around 7.30 last Sunday morning, I went to a nearby rubbish bin to deposit some overnight items ....and passed A-Ming sitting outside 7-11, as in Dec 14 photo here. So I bought him a cup of coffee and something to eat at 7-11. Then on Sunday night, when I left the Dr Jesus Centre around 9.30 and went to same rubbish bin for an evening deposit, I saw another street man .... and got him something at 7-11. My Sunday was 7-11 book-ended!

Job 15-17: Eliphaz then said that Job's own words condemned him since he was in fact challenging God. Job replied that he was sick and tired of listening to his friends' speeches.  He also said he felt death was not far away: "My breath grows weak, I am ridiculed by everyone, every fiber of my heart is broken.  I have no hope."
Lord, help of the helpless, please help people who feel their situation is hopeless

My recording of this reading

Psalm 119: They are happy who follow God's word, those who seek God with all their hearts. How can young people avoid evil? By seeking you and obeying you, Lord. Open my eyes, Lord, that I may understand the beauty of your word. Lord, when I'm worried or in trouble, your word revives me and gives me strength. Lord, keep my eyes from what is false. Bend my heart to your word and not to love of gain. The word from your mouth means more to me than silver and gold. The unfolding of your word gives light and teaches simple people
Lord, thank you for your word which gives peace to our hearts

Listen

James 5.1-6: Are you rich and powerful? Then start weeping for the miseries that are coming your way. Your wealth is rotting, your clothes are being eaten by moths. And your body also will soon be corroding in a burning fire. You cheated your workers. You lived a life of luxury without any care for people who were suffering. You condemned and killed the innocent
Jesus, give uncaring rich and powerful people a change of heart

Listen

Mark 6.1-6: Jesus and his disciples went to his home town of Nazareth. On the Sabbath he went to the prayer hall and began teaching. People in the prayer hall were astonished at his teaching. "Who does he think he is?" they asked. "He is just a carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, Joset, Jude and Simon. His sisters also are here." And they would not accept him. So Jesus said to them "A prophet is despised only in his own country". Because of their lack of faith, Jesus cured only a few sick people there. He was amazed at the lack of faith in Nazareth.
Jesus, please help me be happy about your gifts to others

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Almost every time Jesus cured people, faith was a factor. Jesus, please increase our faith!

c.f. Readings for Pentecost

Acts 2.1-4: About ten days after Jesus' ascension to heaven, was the Feast of Pentecost. Jesus' 12 apostles, his mother, several other women, and his brothers were together in one room. Suddenly they heard what sounded like a powerful wind. Tongues of fire appeared and came to rest on the head of each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak foreign languages
Come Holy Spirit, fall afresh on me. Fall afresh on our world

My recording of this reading

Psalm 104: Bless the Lord, my soul! Lord God, how great you are. You make the clouds your chariot. You walk on the wings of the wind. You make springs gush forth in the valleys. They give drink to all the animals of the field. You make grass grow for the cattle, and plants to provide food for people. You give us wine to cheer our hearts, and oil to make our faces shine. You made the moon to mark the months. The sun knows the time for its setting. How many are your works, O Lord. In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your riches and the sea is swarming with life. All things, great and small, look to you for food. You open your hand, they have their fill. You send forth your spirit, and life is created. You renew the face of the earth. I will sing to the Lord all my life. May my thoughts be pleasing to him.
Lord, send forth your Holy Spirit and renew the face of the earth

1 Corinthians 12.4-10: The Holy Spirit gives us many different gifts: Some people have the gift of wise preaching. Some people have the gift of an extra strong faith. Some people have the gift of healing sick people. Some people have other gifts like the power of miracles, prophecy, recognizing spirits, and the ability to speak in tongues.
Holy Spirit, please increase your influence in my life. Please give me the gift of (..name...)

John 15-16: Jesus said to his disciples: "When the Advocate comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who issues from the Father, he will be my witness. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will lead you to the complete truth. He will glorify me, since all he tells you will be taken from what is mine. Everything the Father has is mine; that is why I said: All he tells you will be taken from what is mine"
O Holy Spirit, Spirit of Truth, fall afresh on our world!

 The Day of Pentecost (good!)

Hudson Taylor: "Since the days of Pentecost, has the whole church ever put aside every other work and waited upon Him for ten days, that the Spirit's power might be manifested? We give too much attention to method and machinery and resources, and too little to the source of power."

A devout old shepherd lost his favourite Bible while he was out looking for a lost lamb. Three weeks later, a sheep walked up to him carrying the Bible in its mouth. The shepherd couldn’t believe his eyes. He took the precious book out of the sheep’s mouth, raised his eyes heavenward and exclaimed, “It’s a miracle!”

“Not really,” said the sheep. “Your name is written inside the cover.”

c.f. readings for Vigil of Pentecost

Joel 1-4:
My country has been invaded. Joy has disappeared from the land. Priests, put on sackcloth, and lament. Proclaim a fast to pray for our nation. Turn to the Lord your God again, for he is all tenderness and compassion. Call out to the Lord for help. "Spare your people, Lord!" The Lord replies: "I will save and rescue you. I will pour out my spirit on all peoples. Everyone will prophesy and see visions. You will learn that I am the Lord your God. Jerusalem will be a holy place."
Lord, pour out your Holy Spirit on all nations

My recording of this reading

Psalm 104: Bless the Lord, my soul! Lord God, how great you are. You make the clouds your chariot. You walk on the wings of the wind. You make springs gush forth in the valleys. Romans 8.14-21: Everyone moved by the Spirit is a child of God. The Spirit lets us use children's language to speak to God tenderly as "Abba, Father". Since we are God's children, we are also his heirs, coheirs with Jesus, sharing his suffering so as to share his glory. What we suffer in this life can never be compared with the glorious life we will have in heaven. The whole of creation looks forward to sharing the same glory, to sharing immortality.
Holy Spirit, please help us pray!

Recording

John 7.37-39: During the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem, Jesus called out loudly  in the Temple "If anyone is thirsty, come to me. Anyone who believes in me, come and drink!" As Scripture says "From his heart will flow fountains of living water". Jesus was speaking of the Holy Spirit, which people who believed in him were to receive. The Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
Holy Spirit, flowing from the heart of Jesus, please increase your influence in my life

Job 11-14: Zophar then said that Job must still have some secret sins of which he had not repented. Job sarcastically replied: "No doubt you are the voice of the people and when you die, wisdom will die with you. I am only too aware that God knows everything. How could I hide anything from him? God, why do you hide your face? Why do you look on me as an enemy?"
Dear God, please give us trust and courage in time of trial

My recording of this reading

Psalm 118: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love has no end. Let the sons of Israel say: "His love has no end." Let those who honor the Lord say: "His love has no end." It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. I was falling, falling, falling, but the Lord was my helper. The Lord is my strength and my song. He is my saviour. The Lord's right hand has triumphed. His right hand has raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live and recount all his deeds. The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord. We rejoice and are glad.
Lord, we give thanks to you, for you are good. Your love has no end

James 4.13-15: Avoid talking like this: "Tomorrow I'm going to another town, to do business there for a year". You don't know what will happen tomorrow. You are no more than a mist that is here for a little while, then disappears. What you should say is: "If it's the Lord's will, tomorrow I'm going to another town for a year"
Jesus, help me to remember to say to people: "God willing, I will see you next month" or "Please God, I will see you next month", rather than just "I'll see you next month"

John 21.15-19:

Jesus showed himself to his disciples, and after they had eaten he said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these others do?’ He answered, ‘Yes Lord, you know I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my lambs.’ A second time he said to him, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ He replied, ‘Yes, Lord, you know I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Look after my sheep.’ Then he said to him a third time, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ Peter was upset that he asked him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ and said, ‘Lord, you know everything; you know I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep.
‘I tell you most solemnly,
when you were young
you put on your own belt
and walked where you liked;
but when you grow old
you will stretch out your hands,
and somebody else will put a belt round you
and take you where you would rather not go.’
In these words he indicated the kind of death by which Peter would give glory to God. After this he said, ‘Follow me.’

Job 8-10: Bildad then spoke of God's justice and the fate of people who forget God. Job agreed and said how God was sole creator and judge of the world: He and no other stretched out the skies. The Bear, Orion, the Pleiades and the Mansions of the South - all were made by him. "Challenging God is unthinkable. Yet I know I am innocent and I'm being punished unjustly. I also know that God knows I'm innocent. So why am I being punished?  This is my question."
Dear God, please save us in time of trial

James 4.7-12: Turn towards God. Turn away from the Devil, and the Devil will run away from you. Clean your hearts and minds. Be sorry for your sins. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. Do not slander one another. Who are you to give a verdict on your neighbor?
Jesus, help me understand "the time to judge others is never"

John 17.20-26:

Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said:
‘Holy Father,
I pray not only for these,
but for those also
who through their words will believe in me.
May they all be one.
Father, may they be one in us,
as you are in me and I am in you,
so that the world may believe it was you who sent me.
I have given them the glory you gave to me,
that they may be one as we are one.
With me in them and you in me,
may they be so completely one
that the world will realise that it was you who sent me
and that I have loved them as much as you loved me.
Father, I want those you have given me
to be with me where I am,
so that they may always see the glory you have given me
because you loved me before the foundation of the world.
Father, Righteous One,
the world has not known you,
but I have known you,
and these have known that you have sent me.
I have made your name known to them
and will continue to make it known,
so that the love with which you loved me may be in them,
and so that I may be in them.’

As I walked to a nearby post box yesterday with a letter for a prisoner, a local street lady stopped me to give me a rent bill for our social worker. The lady helped our social worker some time ago to find several rooms for homeless people. The lady was very scantily dressed. Make that very, very. As I took the bill and said goodbye (our encounter lasted for maybe 15 seconds) I was immediately stopped by another lady, an Indonesian Muslim lady whose long black clothing covered every part of her body except her eyes. She just wanted to say hello since MercyHK is helping pay school fees for her children. The two ladies were standing almost next to each other. One lady was wearing too little, the other lady was wearing too much, I was wearing ... a smile

In the meantime communication is done by writting letters ....also slow because of Covid (in at least one prison, incoming mail is quarantined for 3 days to disinfect it!)

Job 3-7: Job broke the 7 day silence by wishing that he had never been born. He added "For me, there is no peace, no sleep. My suffering doesn't let me rest." Eliphaz then spoke and reminded Job that God corrects those whom he loves. Job replied that he was innocent of any wrongdoing, so why was he being punished?  He added: "Lying in bed I wonder 'When will it be day?'  During the day I think 'How slowly night comes.' Neither day nor night offers me any relief from my suffering."
Dear Lord, please give courage and peace to people who are suffering great pain or distress

My recording of this reading

Psalm 116: I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal. He turned his ear to me in the day when I called him. They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the snares of death. I was helpless, so the Lord saved me. Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord. O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful. Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I am your servant.
Thank you, Lord, for all your goodness to me

Listen

James 3.16-17: Wherever you find jealousy and ambition, you find disharmony and evil practices. On the other hand,  wisdom from heaven is good and peaceful and kindly and considerate. It is full of compassion, and does good. There is no trace of partiality or hypocrisy in it
Jesus, give me wisdom. Make me peaceful

John 17.11-19:

Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said:
‘Holy Father,
keep those you have given me true to your name,
so that they may be one like us.
While I was with them,
I kept those you had given me true to your name.
I have watched over them
and not one is lost
except the one who chose to be lost,
and this was to fulfil the scriptures.
But now I am coming to you
and while still in the world I say these things
to share my joy with them to the full.
I passed your word on to them,
and the world hated them,
because they belong to the world
no more than I belong to the world.
I am not asking you to remove them from the world,
but to protect them from the evil one.
They do not belong to the world
any more than I belong to the world.
Consecrate them in the truth;
your word is truth.
As you sent me into the world,
I have sent them into the world,
and for their sake I consecrate myself
so that they too may be consecrated in truth.’
