Yesterday morning at the Dr Jesus Centre in Jordan there was a most encouraging meeting between MercyHK staff and three social workers from Caritas ....discussing how to help drug addicts who have graduated from drug treatment centres.

There is an important article below about link between health and forgiveness (at reflection, after Gospel)

Laudato Si:103. Technoscience, when well directed, can produce important means of improving the quality of human life, from useful domestic appliances to great transportation systems, bridges, buildings and public spaces. It can also produce art and enable men and women immersed in the material world to "leap" into the world of beauty. Who can deny the beauty of an aircraft or a skyscraper? Valuable works of art and music now make use of new technologies. So, in the beauty intended by the one who uses new technical instruments and in the contemplation of such beauty, a quantum leap occurs, resulting in a fulfilment which is uniquely human.

Deuteronomy 5: Moses reminded the people of the Ten Commandments
1: I am the Lord your God. Do not worship anyone or anything else.
2: Use my name with respect. Do not insult my name.
3: Make the Sabbath a holy day each week.
4: Honor your father and your mother.
 5: Do not kill.
 6: Do not commit adultery.
 7: Do not steal.
8: Do not tell lies about other people.
9: Do not lust after someone else's wife.
10: Do not desire what belongs to someone else.

Dear God, please help us to put these commandments into practice

My recording of this reading

Psalm 1: Happy the person who avoids evil and evil entertainment. Happy the person who reads and meditates on God's words. Such a person is like a tree planted beside a river, getting plenty of nourishment, bearing plenty of fruit. Such a person is on the Way of Life. People who do evil are on the Way of Death.
Dear Lord, please help me do good and avoid evil

Listen

1 Thessalonians 5.1-11: The Lord's coming will not find us unprepared if we live a good life. You are not children of the night and of darkness. You are children of the light and of the day. Put on faith and love for a breastplate. Put on the hope of salvation for a helmet. Encourage one another. Strengthen one another
Jesus, please help me be a person of
encouragement, not discouragement

Listen

Matthew 18.21-35: Peter asked Jesus "How many times must I forgive someone? 7 times?"  Jesus answered "Not 7, but 77 times. For the kingdom of heaven is like a king who cancelled the huge debt of one of his servants. But that same servant refused to cancel the tiny debt of one of his fellow servants. So the king said to the servant: 'When you appealed to me, I had pity on you and cancelled your big debt.  But you refused to have pity on your fellow servant who asked you for mercy. Therefore you must now go to prison until your big debt is paid.' If you refuse to forgive other people,
you are making yourself ineligible for God's forgiveness
."

Jesus, please help me to forgive other people, just as you forgive me....many times each day

Laudato Si:102. Humanity has entered a new era in which our technical prowess has brought us to a crossroads. We are the beneficiaries of two centuries of enormous waves of change: steam engines, railways, the telegraph, electricity, automobiles, aeroplanes, chemical industries, modern medicine, information technology and, more recently, the digital revolution, robotics, biotechnologies and nanotechnologies. It is right to rejoice in these advances and to be excited by the immense possibilities which they continue to open up before us, for "science and technology are wonderful products of a God-given human creativity". The modification of nature for useful purposes has distinguished the human family from the beginning; technology itself "expresses the inner tension that impels man gradually to overcome material limitations". Technology has remedied countless evils which used to harm and limit human beings. How can we not feel gratitude and appreciation for this progress, especially in the fields of medicine, engineering and communications? How could we not acknowledge the work of many scientists and engineers who have provided alternatives to make development sustainable?

Deuteronomy 2-4: Moses continued his talk to the Israelites: "God has been with us these 40 years, watching over us and providing for us. God gave us many victories and continually told us not to be afraid of any enemies. So now, Israel, do not forget God's goodness and help and laws. Do not forget the things your eyes have seen. Make sure to tell these things to your children's children. God has brought you out of Egypt to be his special people. If you seek God with all your heart and soul you will find him. Understand this today, therefore, and take it to heart: The Lord is God indeed, in heaven above as on earth below, he and no other. Keep his laws and commandments as I give them to you today, so that you and your children may prosper and live long in the land that the Lord your God gives you forever."

Psalms 149-150: Sing a new song to the Lord. Let the praise of God be always on our lips. Praise God in his holy temple. Praise him in the heavens. O praise him with sound of trumpet. Praise him with lute and harp. Praise him with drums and dancing. Praise him with strings and pipes. Let everything that lives and breathes, give praise to the Lord our Creator.  Alleluia!

1 Thessalonians 4.13-18: You asked us about the situation of people who have died. Do not mourn in an unhealthy way for them, like people who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and that it will be the same for everyone who dies in God's friendship: God will give them life with Jesus. They will live in God's House for ever. With thoughts such as these you should comfort one another in times of mourning

Matthew 18.1-10: One day Jesus heard his disciples arguing about which one of them was the most important. Jesus got a little child to sit in front of them, and said "If you want to be great in God's eyes, become child-like. In fact, unless you become child-like, you won't get to heaven. And make sure you never cause harm to children like this one. Remember, the protecting angels of children are in the presence of my Father in heaven."
Jesus, please help me to be more child-like, and please don't let me ever cause harm to children

c.f. Readings for Pentecost

Acts 2.1-4: About ten days after Jesus' ascension to heaven, was the Feast of Pentecost. Jesus' 12 apostles, his mother, several other women, and his brothers were together in one room. Suddenly they heard what sounded like a powerful wind. Tongues of fire appeared and came to rest on the head of each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak foreign languages
Come Holy Spirit, fall afresh on me. Fall afresh on our world

My recording of this reading

Psalm 104: Bless the Lord, my soul! Lord God, how great you are. You make the clouds your chariot. You walk on the wings of the wind. You make springs gush forth in the valleys. They give drink to all the animals of the field. You make grass grow for the cattle, and plants to provide food for people. You give us wine to cheer our hearts, and oil to make our faces shine. You made the moon to mark the months. The sun knows the time for its setting. How many are your works, O Lord. In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your riches and the sea is swarming with life. All things, great and small, look to you for food. You open your hand, they have their fill. You send forth your spirit, and life is created. You renew the face of the earth. I will sing to the Lord all my life. May my thoughts be pleasing to him.
Lord, send forth your Holy Spirit and renew the face of the earth

1 Corinthians 12.4-10: The Holy Spirit gives us many different gifts: Some people have the gift of wise preaching. Some people have the gift of an extra strong faith. Some people have the gift of healing sick people. Some people have other gifts like the power of miracles, prophecy, recognizing spirits, and the ability to speak in tongues.

John 15-16: Jesus said to his disciples: "When the Advocate comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who issues from the Father, he will be my witness. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will lead you to the complete truth. He will glorify me, since all he tells you will be taken from what is mine. Everything the Father has is mine; that is why I said: All he tells you will be taken from what is mine"

Joel 1-4: My country has been invaded. Joy has disappeared from the land. Priests, put on sackcloth, and lament. Proclaim a fast to pray for our nation. Turn to the Lord your God again, for he is all tenderness and compassion. Call out to the Lord for help. "Spare your people, Lord!" The Lord replies: "I will save and rescue you. I will pour out my spirit on all peoples. Everyone will prophesy and see visions. You will learn that I am the Lord your God. Jerusalem will be a holy place."
Lord, pour out your Holy Spirit on all nations

Romans 8.14-21: Everyone moved by the Spirit is a child of God. The Spirit lets us use children's language to speak to God tenderly as "Abba, Father". Since we are God's children, we are also his heirs, coheirs with Jesus, sharing his suffering so as to share his glory. What we suffer in this life can never be compared with the glorious life we will have in heaven. The whole of creation looks forward to sharing the same glory, to sharing immortality.

John 7.37-39: During the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem, Jesus called out loudly  in the Temple "If anyone is thirsty, come to me. Anyone who believes in me, come and drink!" As Scripture says "From his heart will flow fountains of living water". Jesus was speaking of the Holy Spirit, which people who believed in him were to receive. The Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

To prepare for Pentecostst (May 28) lelet's reflect on the Holy Spirit:
The dove: At the end of the flood, whose symbolism refers to Baptism, a dove released by Noah returns with a fresh olive-tree branch in its beak as a sign that the earth was again habitable.
When Jesus comes up from the water of his baptism, the Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove, comes down upon him and remains with him. The Spirit comes down and remains in the purified hearts of the baptized. In some churches, the Eucharist is reserved in a metal receptacle in the form of a dove (columbarium) suspended above the altar. Christian iconography traditionally uses a dove to suggest the Spirit.  CCC 701

In this week before Pentecost, let's often pray each day:
Come Holy Spirit, fall afresh on our world!

Deuteronomy 1: After wandering in the desert for 40 years, the Israelites reached the land of Canaan. Moses then assembled the people and recalled all that had happened over the past 40 years: "When God first told us to take this land, I said to you: Do not be afraid. God goes ahead of you and will be fighting on your side, as he did in Egypt. I also said how God carried you, as a man carries his child, all along the road you travelled to this place. But you did not trust God and God closed the door to Canaan for 40 years, causing us to wander in the desert until now."

Psalm 148: Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise him in the heights. Praise him all his angels, praise him all his spirits. Praise him, sun and moon,
praise him, shining stars. Let them praise the name of the Lord. His word gave life to all of them. Praise the Lord from the earth, sea creatures and all oceans. Praise him fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy winds that obey his word. Praise him all mountains and hills, all fruit trees and cedars. Praise him all animals, wild and tame, reptiles and birds in the air. Praise him all earth's kings and peoples, earth's princes and rulers. Praise him young men and maidens, old people together with children. Let them praise the name of the Lord. He is the praise of all who love him.

Yesterday was a church day for me: morning at cathedral for priests' monthly retreat and evening at St Mary's Hung Hom for funeral of dear Notre Dame Parish friend.

Tomorrow, Friday May 26, a public holiday in HK for Buddha's Birthday, everyone welcome to join me for a hike to Big Wave Bay on HK Island .... leaving from Jordan MTR (Exit A down inside the station) at 9am  ... then MTR to Chai Wan (can meet you there if you like)...then walk up through cemetery ... then down to BWB. Returning the same way. Much the same as previous hike on May 17 last year (...except not going to Shek O this time). Need water, hat, umbrella, (swimming togs) ... and no need to bring much food ...food will be provided!

To prepare for Pentecost (May 28) let's reflect on the Holy Spirit:
The finger is another symbol of the Holy Spirit.  It was by the finger of God that Jesus cast out demons. If God's law was written on tablets of stone "by the finger of God," then the "letter from Christ" entrusted to the care of the apostles, is written "with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone, but on tablets of human hearts." The hymn Veni Creator Spiritus invokes the Holy Spirit as " the finger of the Father's right hand."  - CCC 700

In this week before Pentecost, let's often pray each day:
Come Holy Spirit, fall afresh on our world!

Numbers 34-35:  God gave the land of Canaan to the Israelites and Moses allocated a section of the land to the eleven tribes. The tribe of Levi received some towns and pasture land from each of the eleven tribes. Cities of refuge were established, where people could find safety if they had accidentally caused someone's death and the dead person's relatives wanted to take revenge. In cases of homicide, more than one witness was required to convict someone of murder. A final law: the inheritance of each tribe was not to be transferred to another tribe

My recording of this reading

Psalm 147: Praise the Lord for he is good. Sing to our God for he is loving. To him our praise is due. The Lord builds up Jerusalem and brings back Israel's exiles. He heals the broken-hearted and binds up all their wounds. The Lord raises the lowly and humbles the wicked. He fixes the number of the stars. He calls each one by name. Our Lord is great and almighty. His wisdom can never be measured. He covers the heavens with clouds. He prepares rain for the earth, making mountains sprout with grass and with plants to serve our needs. His delight is not in horses nor his pleasure in warriors' strength. The Lord delights in those who love and honor him, in those who wait for his love.
It is right and fitting to praise and love you, Lord our Creator

1 Thessalonians 4.1-11: We urge you and appeal to you in the Lord Jesus to make more and more progress in the kind of life you are meant to live. God wants you to be holy. He wants you to keep away from fornication. Live life peacefully. Get a decent job and earn your living

John 17.20-26:

Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said:
‘Holy Father,
I pray not only for these,
but for those also
who through their words will believe in me.
May they all be one.
Father, may they be one in us,
as you are in me and I am in you,
so that the world may believe it was you who sent me.
I have given them the glory you gave to me,
that they may be one as we are one.
With me in them and you in me,
may they be so completely one
that the world will realise that it was you who sent me
and that I have loved them as much as you loved me.
Father, I want those you have given me
to be with me where I am,
so that they may always see the glory you have given me
because you loved me before the foundation of the world.
Father, Righteous One,
the world has not known you,
but I have known you,
and these have known that you have sent me.
I have made your name known to them
and will continue to make it known,
so that the love with which you loved me may be in them,
and so that I may be in them.’

Yesterday I was in Lai Chi Kok men's prison for around 6 hours ....sad to met several of the new durg mules who were arrested recently at HK airport.

Today is my 70th Anniversary of this most special day in 1953. Fr Rudolph, the Capuchin Franciscan priest from USA who gave me Communion was in China, in Gansu Province, for 30 years and maybe he planted the seed of love for China in my heart when I was his altar boy. And I am often reminded of him by a street 5 mins from my home ....called ...Gansu Street!

To prepare for Pentecost (May 28) let's reflect on the Holy Spirit -
today: The Hand
The hand
is another symbol of the Holy Spirit. Jesus heals the sick and blesses little children by laying hands on them. In his name the apostles will do the same. It is by the Apostles' imposition of hands that the Holy Spirit is given.
The Church has kept this sign of the all-powerful outpouring of the Holy Spirit by having the priest at Mass extend his hands over the bread and wine as he says "Let your Spirit come upon these gifts to make them holy"
   CCC 699
In this week before Pentecost, let's often pray each day: Come Holy Spirit, fall afresh on our world!

Genesis 3: A creature hostile to God took the form of a snake and tempted the first man and first woman. The snake tempted them to disobey God. When God asked them why they disobeyed him, the man blamed the woman, and the woman blamed the snake. God said to the snake: "You are the enemy of the human race. Someday a member of the human race will defeat you." God said to the man and woman: "From dust you came and to dust you will return." The first man's name was Adam (meaning "man"). The first woman's name was Eve (meaning "life").
Dear God, please help me understand how evil in the world
started when Adam and Eve disobeyed you

Psalm 103: My soul, give thanks to the Lord. All my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord and never forget all his blessings. It is he who forgives all your guilt, who heals every one of your ills. It is he who fills your life with good things, renewing your youth like an eagle's life. The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. As the heavens are high above the earth so strong is his love for those who love him. As far as the East is from the West, so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his children, the Lord has pity on all who love and honor him. Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels, who heed the voice of his word. Give thanks to the Lord, everyone and everything. My soul, give thanks to the Lord!
Thank you, Lord, for your love and compassion

Ephesians 3.14-21: This is what I pray, kneeling before the Father from whom every family, whether spiritual or natural, takes it name: May he give you  power through his Spirit for your hidden self to grow strong. May Christ live in your hearts through faith. Planted in love and built on love, may you continually focus on the love of Christ, until your life is filled with that love
Glory be to him whose power working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory be to him from generation to generation in the Church and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen

John 19.25-30: Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. Seeing his mother and John the apostle standing near her, Jesus said to his mother "He is your son". Then to John he said "She is your mother".  From that moment, John regarded Mary as his own mother. Jesus said "My work is finished". Then he bowed his head and died
We adore you  Lord Jesus  and we praise you, because you have redeemed the world
