Isaiah
62-66: The Lord says: "My eyes are drawn to
the humble and contrite person who lovingly meditates on my word. Towards
Jerusalem I will send peace, flowing
like a river. I am going to gather the nations of every language. All
peoples will know and love me
Lord, please give me more love for the Bible. Please give the world more
peace. Please help all peoples know and love you
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
87: On the holy mountain
is Jerusalem, the Lord's cherished city. Of you are told glorious things, O city
of God. All nations are called to serve and love the Lord. And
Jerusalem shall be called their spiritual mother, for all shall be her
children. In Jerusalem everyone will be welcome and find a home.
Lord, may Jerusalem be a place of peace and prayer for all peoples

Revelation
12.1-6: A
great sign appeared in heaven: a
woman, dressed in the sun, standing on the moon, crowned with 12 stars.
She was giving birth to a child, and she cried out in the pain of childbirth.
Then a second sign appeared: a huge red dragon, which wanted to eat the child.
The woman gave birth to a son, the ruler of all nations. The son was taken
straight up to heaven, to God on his throne. The woman escaped to safety in the
desert, to a place prepared for her by God.
Jesus, protect us from Satan who goes
round like a hungry lion wanting to eat us

John
2.1-11: Jesus,
his mother and his disciples were guests at a wedding at Cana in Galilee. The
wine ran out, so Jesus' mother said to him "They
have no wine". Jesus replied "Woman, my time for doing special
things has not yet come". His
mother said to the servants "Do whatever he tells you". There
were 6 big containers there, used for holding water. Each could hold about 35
liters. Jesus said to the servants "Fill the containers with water"
and they filled them up. Jesus then said "take some out and give it to the
man in charge of the banquet". When the man tasted the water, it had
turned to wine. The man called the bridegroom and said "You have kept the
best wine until now". This was the first public miracle done by Jesus
Jesus, help me to do whatever you tell me to do

Reflection on the above readings: Without Mary's request, Jesus would not have changed water to wine. Our prayer requests also can get "water" (e.g. sickness) changed to wine (good health)

Joshua
9: After hearing that the
Israelites had captured Jericho and Ai,
other peoples of the region formed an alliance to fight against the Israelites.
But the people of Gibeon used another
strategy:
they tricked the Israelites into thinking they were not locals but had come from far away.
So the Israelites made
a treaty with them. When the Israelites
realized they had been tricked,
they kept their side of the bargain and did not attack Gibeon. Instead the Gibeonites
became wood-cutters and water-carriers
in the service of the Israelites.
Dear
Lord, please help nations to make treaties instead of war

Psalm
28: To you, O Lord, I call, my rock, hear me.
If you do not heed, I shall become like people in the grave. Lord, you are my strength and my
shield.
In you my heart trusts. Thank you, Lord, for so often hearing my
prayer.
I will always thank and praise you. You are the strength of your people Israel.
Save your people. Be our shepherd and carry us for ever.
Lord, please help people who

Acts 8.4-8: The believers who escaped from Jerusalem went
from place to place spreading the Good News. One of these believers was Philip. He preached about Jesus in a
Samaritan town. The Samaritans welcomed Philip's message
because of the miracles he worked. Unclean spirits came out of many possessed
people,
and a number of handicapped people were cured. Such miracles caused great
rejoicing in that town

especially the healing of handicapped people

12.35-38: Jesus said to his disciples "Be like people waiting for their master
to return, ready to open the door as soon as he comes and knocks. Be
ready, for I will come at an hour you do not expect. "When someone is given a great deal, of that person more will
be expected"

Isaiah
6: In the year 740
B.C., I had a vision of the Lord God in Heaven: Above the Lord were 6 angels who
cried out "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God. His glory fills the whole
earth." Then I heard a voice asking "Whom shall I send? Who will be
our messenger?" I answered "Here
I am, send me." Then
the Lord sent me to be a prophet to the people.
Here I am, Lord, send me. I'm willing to do anything you want me to do
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
138: I thank you, Lord, with all
my heart. You have heard the words of my mouth. With the angels I will bless
you. I will adore you in your holy temple. I thank you for your faithfulness and
love which are far above what we can understand. On the day I called you
answered. You
increased the strength of my soul. All earth's kings shall thank you when
they hear the words of your mouth. They shall sing of the Lord's ways: "How
great is the glory of the Lord!" Though I walk in the midst of affliction
you give me life and frustrate my foes. Your
love, O Lord, is eternal. Do not abandon us whom you have made.

Corinthians 15.9-11: I
am the least of the apostles. In fact, since I persecuted the Church of God, I
hardly deserve the name apostle. But by
God's grace I am what I am, and the grace that he gave me has not been fruitless.
On the contrary, I, or rather the grace of God in my heart, have worked harder
than any of the others, preaching the same message that they preach.
Jesus, may your grace in me be more fruitful

Luke
5.1-11: One day when Jesus
was standing near the Lake of Gennesaret, with people pressing round him
listening to the word of God, he saw two fishing boats near the bank. He got
into one boat, it belonged to Simon Peter, and taught people from the boat, away
from the shore a little distance. When he'd finished speaking he said to Simon
"Go out further to deep water and use your nets for a catch of fish".
Simon replied "Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but if
you say so I'll lower the nets". They soon caught so many fish that the
nets began to tear. They called to their friends in the second boat to come and
help. Both boats were soon filled with fish. Peter fell at Jesus' knees and said
"Leave me, Lord, I am a sinful man", for he was overcome by the catch
they had made, as were James and John who were his partners. But Jesus said to
Simon "Don't be afraid. From
now on, you will be fishers of men". Simon and his friends
then left everything to follow Jesus.
Jesus, bless and protect all "fishers of men"

Joshua
8: Once again the
Israelites attacked the town of Ai,
this time with a special strategy: 5,000 men
went by night to the back of the town and hid themselves in the nearby hills.
In the morning Joshua and the rest of the people
marched towards the front of Ai. When the
king of Ai saw them coming, he led his people out for battle. In chasing
the Israelites,
the king of Ai left his town undefended. Then the
5,000 Israelites attacked
Ai from the rear and set it on fire.
When the men of Ai looked back and saw their town on fire,
they realized they were caught in a trap. The
Israelites easily won the battle
and captured Ai.
Dear Lord, please
give leaders the courage of Joshua

27: The Lord is my light and my
help, whom shall
I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life, before whom shall I shrink? Though
an army encamp against me, even then would I trust. There is one thing I ask of the Lord, for this
I long:
to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek. Hide not
your face.
I am sure I will see your goodness in the land of the living. Hope in the Lord, hold firm and take heart.
Hope in the Lord!
Lord, you are my light and my
help.
I will always praise you

Acts
7.55 - 8.3: Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked
up and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at God's right hand. "I can see heaven thrown open", he
said, "and Jesus standing at the right hand of God". At this, the religious leaders at the meeting
covered their ears with their hands. They sent Stephen out of the city and
stoned him. The false witnesses (who were required to throw the first
stones) put down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Paul. As they were stoning him, Stephen prayed
"Lord Jesus, receive my spirit". Then he knelt down and prayed
"Lord, do not hold this sin against them". Then he died. Paul
entirely approved of the killing. That day a bitter persecution started against
the church in Jerusalem
and everyone except the apostles fled to the countryside. Paul began working for the destruction of the church. He went from house to house arresting men and
women and sending them to prison
Jesus, thank you for the example of Stephen
who, like yourself, forgave those who were killing him

12.22-34: Jesus said to his disciples "Do not
worry about food and clothing.
As regards food, think of the birds.
They don't sow or reap, and they have no homes to store things. Yet God
feeds them.
As regards clothing, think how the flowers grow with a beauty greater than
that of Solomon's clothes. God will look after you more than he looks
after the flowers. So, don't set your hearts on food and
clothing.
Don't go in for worry. Just set your hearts on God's kingdom, then food and clothing will not be a problem.
Where your treasure is, that is where your
heart will be too

Joshua 7: The Lord had told the
Israelites not to keep anything for themselves
when they captured Jericho. But one man disobeyed
the Lord
and secretly kept some of the spoils. As a result of that
man's disobedience,
the Israelites were defeated in battle when they attacked the town of
Ai. The disobedient
man's identity was found by drawing of the lot:
- of the 12 tribes, one was chosen, the tribe of Judah.
- of the tribe of Judah, one clan was chosen, that of Zerah.
- of the families of Zerah, one was chosen, that of Zabdi.
- of the men of Zabdi, one was chosen, Achan.
Achan admitted his
guilt.
He and his whole family were then stoned to death
and a great cairn built over them.
All of Achan's possessions were burnt.
Dear

Acts 7.1-54:
The meeting of religious leaders had falsely
accused Stephen of being disloyal to Moses. So Stephen gave a long speech, full of loyalty
to Moses. Then he made a stinging attack on the leaders: "You
stubborn people, with your pagan hearts and pagan ears. You are always
resisting the Holy Spirit, just as your ancestors did. Your ancestors killed the prophets who
foretold the coming of the Just One. You have gone further: you
have killed the Just One himself". When the leaders heard these words, they were
very angry and wanted to kill Stephen
Jesus, Just One from heaven, please don't let
me resist the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit of God, please increase your
influence in my life

Luke
12.15-21: Jesus told the people this story: There was a
rich man who, having had a good harvest from his land, thought to himself
"What am I to do? I don't have enough room to store my
crops".
Then he said to himself "This is what I will do: I will pull down my
barns and build bigger ones, and store all my grain in them, and I will
say to my soul: My soul, you have plenty of good things laid by for many
years to come; take things easy, eat, drink, and have a good time". But God said to him "Fool! This very
night your earthly life will come to an end. And all your possessions, who
will get them?"
So it is when people store up treasure for themselves, instead of making themselves rich in the sight of God
Jesus, please help me to be satisfied with
what I have, and not to be greedy

Thu Feb 6
I can't find the source (John Henry Newman?) but I remember
reading that the many coincidences in our lives are a sign of God's Providence.
Like 2 days ago at Tai Lam women's prison. I had run out of time at the end of
the day and did not have time to visit a section where there was a woman who had
written to say that my letter to the High Court had helped her succeed with her
application for an appeal. Her letter sounded too good to be true and I wanted
to check her case. But her situation was not as urgent as cases of new arrivals
and people soon to be sentenced, so I had left her till last, hoping I would
have time to see her but resigned to writing to her if I ran out of time. But
then when I went to the welfare office for my usual end-of-visit time for
putting numbers on books to be handed in, who was there sitting outside the
office .... that woman! Full of smiles. Confirming her application had been
successful. More than 400 women in the prison and she just happened to be one of
only 2 women outside the welfare office. Co-incidence = Providence!

Joshua 6: The Lord said to
Joshua:
"I am delivering Jericho and its king into your hands. Get your soldiers to
march around Jericho.
Do this for 6 days,
marching with the Sacred Chest with 7 trumpets in front of it. On the 7th day, march
around the city 7 times,
and then let the whole people give a mighty war cry." The soldiers and people
did this,
and when the war cry was made,
the walls of Jericho fell down. The Israelites then
entered the town and captured it.
They spared the lives of Rahab the prostitute and her family
Dear
Lord, long ago you caused the walls of Jericho to fall.
Please in our day cause walls of prejudice and corruption to fall

Psalm
23: The Lord is my
shepherd, there is nothing I
shall want.
Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose.
Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my drooping spirit. He guides me along the right path. He is true
to his name.
If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear.
You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me
comfort. You have prepared a banquet for me in the
sight of my foes.
My head you have anointed with oil. My cup is overflowing. Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me
all the days of my life.
In the Lord's own house shall I dwell for ever
and ever.
Thank you, Lord, for being my
good shepherd

Acts
6.8-15: One of the seven deacons, Stephen, was filled
with grace and power.
He began to do many miracles. A group of Jews tried to beat Stephen in a
debate. But they could not win, because the Holy Spirit was guiding
Stephen in his speech. The group then got some men to falsely accuse
Stephen of being disloyal to Moses and to God. The group had Stephen arrested and brought
before a meeting of the religious leaders. At the meeting, false witnesses
accused Stephen of speaking against Moses and the Law
Jesus, please protect people who are accused
by false witnesses
Listen
Luke 11.37-54: Jesus said to the religious leaders "You
worry so much about cleaning dirty dishes, but don't care about
having a dirty heart full of extortion and wickedness. At meetings and in the market, you like being
treated as people of importance. But in fact you are like unmarked tombs
that people walk on without knowing it. You expect ordinary people to observe
unreasonable laws, while you excuse yourselves from such laws. You don't care about obtaining real wisdom,
and you prevent others from obtaining wisdom". The leaders were stung by Jesus'
words, and they intensified their efforts to trap him in his speech
Jesus, help religious leaders be
sincere people

Reflection: In Acts and Luke, Stephen and Jesus are doing the same thing: speaking truth to power

Joshua 5:
The kings of the
Jordan area
heard that the Lord had
dried up the Jordan's waters
to let the Israelites cross over.
The kings became very afraid of the Israelites. At Gilgal near the
Jordan
the Lord instructed Joshua
that all un-circumcised men should be circumcised. It was at Gilgal that
the Israelites kept the Passover Feast
and tasted the produce of the land.
As soon as the Israelites tasted the produce of the land,
the manna stopped falling.
Dear
God, thank you for all you did for the Israelites
My
recording of this reading

Psalm 22: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
I call to you for help, but day and night you give no reply. I am a worm and not a man.
Everyone who sees me makes fun of me. They taunt me: "He trusted in the
Lord, why doesn't the Lord help him?" Like water I am poured out, my bones no longer
connected.
My throat is parched, my tongue sticks to my jaws. Many evil people attack me.
They make holes in my hands and my feet.
They await my death. They divide my clothing among them,
they throw a dice for my robe. Yet I know Lord, that you are good and
holy.
I know how you heard the cries of our ancestors and you helped them. It was you who took me from the womb
and entrusted me to my mother's breast.
To you I was committed from my birth,
from my mother's womb you have been my God. Lord, I trust in you even now.
I trust you will not scorn my prayer. Even now I praise you as my Creator.
May all the nations know and worship you.
Lord, please help people who
are in big trouble right now,
especially people whose lives are in danger

Acts 6.1-7: About this time as the number of disciples
kept growing, the twelve apostles decided to give other men the job of
daily food distribution. The apostles said to the whole group of
believers "It is not right for us to neglect the service of the
word. Therefore you should choose seven men of good reputation, filled
with the Holy Spirit and with wisdom. We give them the food
distribution job, so that we can devote ourselves to prayer
and the service of the word". The whole assembly approved of this idea.
They
chose seven men and presented them to the apostles who prayed over them
with the laying on of hands. The word of the Lord continued to spread. Even
a large number of priests became believers
Jesus, please bless all deacons. Fill them
with the courage and wisdom of the first seven deacons

Luke
11.27-32: While Jesus was speaking, a woman in the
crowd called out
"Blessed the womb that bore you and the breasts that nursed you".
Jesus replied "Even more blessed are
those who hear the word of God and put it into practice!" Jesus also said "On Judgement day, the
Queen of the South will rise up with the people of this generation and
condemn them, because she came from a distant country to hear the wisdom
of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here"
Jesus, greater than Solomon, please help me
put your teaching into practice
