Tues Oct 14

Everyone knows that drug trafficking and drug use in HK is a big problem.... and it's a basic concern of MercyHK.  MercyHK has helped more than 200 drug addicts enter a drug treatment centre over the past 2 years. Last month we opened a new centre in Sha Tau Kok for long term treatment of drug addicts. For the past 10 years I have used my annual holiday time to go to other countries to try to stop drug mules coming to HK.
So I now invite dear readers to pray for and maybe help with another anti-drug project: the making of a special documentary movie to help stop drugs coming to HK. Please check my file at this link:  ... and maybe see you on October 26?!

5. Love for the Lord, then, is one with love for the poor. The same Jesus who tells us, “The poor you will always have with you” (Mt 26:11), also promises the disciples: “I am with you always” (Mt 28:20). We likewise think of his saying: “Just as you did it to one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it to me” (Mt 25:40). This is not a matter of mere human kindness but a revelation: contact with those who are lowly and powerless is a fundamental way of encountering the Lord of history. In the poor, he continues to speak to us.

Wisdom 10-19: Wisdom has been present in the world since the beginning of time. Wisdom has always been a close friend of good people. Wise people see God in the beauty of creation. Foolish people are blind to God's presence in creation. Wise people ponder God's goodness and kindness. Wise people  try to be good and kind to other people.
Lord, please help me see and imitate your goodness and kindness

My recording of this reading

Psalm 137: By the rivers of Babylon we sat and cried, remembering Zion. On the poplars that grew there we hung up our harps. For it was there that they asked us, our captors, for songs. "Sing to us", they said, "one of Zion's songs". O how could we sing the song of the Lord on alien soil? If I forget you, Jerusalem, let my right hand wither. O let my tongue cleave to my mouth if I remember you not, Jerusalem, above all my joys.
Lord, please help people who have been exiled from their homeland

1 Timothy 1.18 - 2.8: Timothy, my son, as I give you advice for practical issues, remember how the church elders prayed over you that you would be a good leader. My first bit of advice is that there should be prayers offered for everyone, especially for kings and others in authority, so that we can live our life of faith in peace and quiet. God wants everyone to be saved and reach full knowledge of the truth. There is only one God, and there is only one mediator between God and humanity, himself a man, Christ Jesus, who sacrificed himself as a ransom for everyone. In every place, I want believers to lift up their hands in reverent prayer
God our Father, through Jesus your Son, I ask a blessing on the leaders of our world, especially the leaders of my own country

Luke 12.22-34: Jesus said to his disciples "Do not worry about food and clothing. As regards food, think of the birds. They don't sow or reap, and they have no homes to store things. Yet God feeds them. As regards clothing, think how the flowers grow with a beauty greater than that of Solomon's clothes. God will look after you more than he looks after the flowers. So, don't set your hearts on food and clothing. Don't go in for worry. Just set your hearts on God's kingdom, then food and clothing will not be a problem. Where your treasure is, that is where your heart will be too
Jesus, please help me to put your friendship as number one in my life

Immigration a blessing for small Spanish town

Pope Leo XIV - Dilexi Te

4. Jesus’ disciples criticized the woman who poured costly perfumed oil on his head. They said: “Why this waste? For this ointment could have been sold for a large sum, and the money given to the poor.” However, the Lord said to them in response: “You always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me” (Mt 26:8-9,11). That woman saw in Jesus the lowly and suffering Messiah on whom she could pour out all her love. What comfort that anointing must have brought to the very head that within a few days would be pierced by thorns! It was a small gesture, of course, but those who suffer know how great even a small gesture of affection can be, and how much relief it can bring. Jesus understood this and told the disciples that the memory of her gesture would endure: “Wherever this good news is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in remembrance of her” (Mt 26:13). The simplicity of that woman’s gesture speaks volumes. No sign of affection, even the smallest, will ever be forgotten, especially if it is shown to those who are suffering, lonely or in need, as was the Lord at that time.

Wisdom 8-9: From my youth I sought and loved Wisdom. Wisdom teaches us temperance, prudence, justice and fortitude. I prayed for Wisdom like this: "God of our ancestors and Lord of mercy, in Wisdom you made all things. Grant me Wisdom who was with you when you made the world. May she teach me what is right, so that I may be a good ruler.
Lord, please give me Wisdom, as you gave Wisdom to King Solomon

My recording of this reading

Psalm 136: O give thanks to the Lord for he is good, for his great love is without end. It was his wisdom which made the skies, for his great love is without end. It was he who made the sun, moon and stars, for his great love is without end. It was he who rescued and protected his people Israel, for his great love is without end. He gives food to all living things, for his great love is without end. To the God of heaven give thanks, for his great love is without end
We praise you, Lord, for your great love is without end

1 Timothy 1.12-17: I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who called me into his service, even though I was an offender. Mercy was shown me, because I was acting in ignorance. Christ Jesus came into the world to save offenders. I myself am the greatest offender. Christ Jesus' patience and mercy to me is available to all offenders. I am a demonstration model of Christ's mercy
To the eternal King, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen

Luke 12.15-21: Jesus told the people this story: There was a rich man who, having had a good harvest from his land, thought to himself "What am I to do? I don't have enough room to store my crops".  Then he said to himself "This is what I will do: I will pull down my barns and build bigger ones, and store all my grain in them, and I will say to my soul: My soul, you have plenty of good things laid by for many years to come; take things easy, eat, drink, and have a good time". But God said to him "Fool! This very night your earthly life will come to an end. And all your possessions, who will get them?" So it is when people store up treasure for themselves, instead of making themselves rich in the sight of God
Jesus, please help me to be satisfied with what I have, and not to be greedy

First teaching letter of Pope Leo XIV - Dilexi Te

1. “I HAVE LOVED YOU” (Rev 3:9). The Lord speaks these words to a Christian community that, unlike some others, had no influence or resources, and was treated instead with violence and contempt: “You have but little power… I will make them come and bow down before your feet” (Rev 3:8-9). This text reminds us of the words of the canticle of Mary: “He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty” (Lk 1:52-53).

2. This declaration of love, taken from the Book of Revelation, reflects the inexhaustible mystery that Pope Francis reflected upon in the Encyclical Dilexit Nos on the human and divine love of the heart of Jesus Christ. There we saw how Jesus identified himself “with the lowest ranks of society” and how, with his love poured out to the end, he confirms the dignity of every human being, especially when “they are weak, scorned, or suffering.” [1] As we contemplate Christ’s love, “we too are inspired to be more attentive to the sufferings and needs of others, and confirmed in our efforts to share in his work of liberation as instruments for the spread of his love.” [2]

3. For this reason, in continuity with the Encyclical Dilexit Nos, Pope Francis was preparing in the last months of his life an Apostolic Exhortation on the Church’s care for the poor, to which he gave the title Dilexi Te, as if Christ speaks those words to each of them, saying: “You have but little power,” yet “I have loved you” ( Rev 3:9). I am happy to make this document my own — adding some reflections — and to issue it at the beginning of my own pontificate, since I share the desire of my beloved predecessor that all Christians come to appreciate the close connection between Christ’s love and his summons to care for the poor. I too consider it essential to insist on this path to holiness, for “in this call to recognize him in the poor and the suffering, we see revealed the very heart of Christ, his deepest feelings and choices, which every saint seeks to imitate.” [3]

c.f. readings for Sunday 28

2 Kings 5: Naaman was an army commander for the king of Aram. Naaman enjoyed success and favor, but he was a leper. He heard about Elisha and the king sent him to Elisha with  gifts of gold, silver and garments to request healing. When Naaman reached Elisha's house, Elisha sent him a message: "Bathe 7 times in the Jordan River." At first Naaman was angry at this message, having expected Elisha to see and heal him personally. But then he humbly bathed 7 times in the Jordan and his flesh became clean once more. Elisha declined Naaman's gifts. But after Naaman left Elisha, Elisha's servant Gehazi caught up with Naaman and deceitfully obtained some silver. Elisha confronted Gehazi about this and Gehazi became a leper.
Dear God, please heal everyone who has leprosy

My recording of this reading

Psalm 98: Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation. The Lord has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He has remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music. Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Let the rivers clap their hands and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth. He will rule the world with justice and the peoples with fairness.
Lord, may all peoples in all countries know your love and goodness

 Listen

2 Timothy 2.2-9: You have heard everything I teach in public. Hand it on to reliable people so that they in turn will be able to teach others. Put up with your share of difficulties like a good soldier of Christ Jesus, like an athlete who keeps all the rules, like a hard-working farmer. Remember the Good News that I carry: "Jesus Christ risen from the dead, sprung from the race of David". On account of this Good News I am chained up like a criminal. But no-one can chain up the Good News
Jesus, help people who are in prison on account of the Good News

 Listen

Luke 17.11-19: On the way to Jerusalem, Jesus entered a village where 10 lepers came to meet him. They stood at a distance and called out "Jesus, Master, take pity on us!" Jesus said to them "Go and show yourselves to the priests". As they went away, their leprosy disappeared. Seeing that he was healed, one of them turned back praising God at the top of his voice. He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him. This made Jesus say "Were not all 10 healed? Where are the 9 others?"
Jesus, please don't let me forget to say "thank you" when someone helps me

Yesterday afternoon MercyHK volunteer Shirley Lee and 11 special friends of our centre for homeless people in Shanghai Street joined me for a sharing at St Paul's Catholic Primary School Yau Ma Tau - for about 120 students from P3 to P6. Shirley hosted the activity, showing photos and interviewing some of the homeless people. A very moving and powerful experience.

Correction: On menu of Oct 9, below, I said that people were queuing up in Temple Street to buy gold. But in fact they are not buying ... they are of course selling! ... because the price of gold has risen dramatically.

Wisdom 6-7: Listen, rulers of the nations, govern with justice, for you will be judged by the Lord. Rulers, if you want to govern successfully, seek Wisdom and she will guide your decisions. A wise ruler is a blessing for his people. The more wise people there are, the better our world will be. When I, Solomon, became a ruler, I prayed for Wisdom. I prayed, and the spirit of Wisdom came to me. In Wisdom's company, all good things came to me.
Lord, please give me the gift of Wisdom

My recording of this reading

Psalm 135: Praise the name of the Lord, praise him, servants of the Lord. Praise the Lord for he is good. Sing a psalm to his name for he is loving. I know the Lord is great. He does whatever he wills in heaven, on earth, in the seas. Pagan idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths but they cannot speak. They have eyes but they cannot see. Sons of Israel, do not trust in useless idols. Sons of Aaron, trust only in our Creator and Lord
Dear Lord, please help people who worship idols to know and love you

1 Timothy 1.1-10: From Paul, apostle of Christ Jesus, to Timothy, true child of mine in the faith. I  wish you grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. Please stay at Ephesus and insist that no one teaches misleading doctrines or empty speculation about the Law of God. As a penal code, the aim of the Law is to make provision not for good people but for offenders: for murderers, for people who are immoral with women or with boys or with men, for liars and for perjurers  - and for everything else that is contrary to sound teaching
Jesus, please help law offenders not to offend again, and to make up for what they have done

Listen

Luke 11.37-54: Jesus said to the religious leaders "You worry so much about cleaning dirty dishes,  but don't care about having a dirty heart full of extortion and wickedness. At meetings and in the market, you like being treated as people of importance. But in fact you are like unmarked tombs that people walk on without knowing it. You expect ordinary people to observe unreasonable laws, while you excuse yourselves from such laws. You don't care about obtaining real wisdom, and you prevent others from obtaining wisdom". The leaders were stung by Jesus' words, and they intensified their efforts to trap him in his speech
Jesus, help religious leaders be sincere people

Wisdom 3-5: When good people die, they are in God's hands. Even if they died a tragic death, they are at peace. A long life is not what makes a person honorable. Honor is due to anyone of any age who is wise and understanding. On the other hand, arrogance and misuse of wealth bring dishonor, in this life and in the next. Our life is short. We must live it wisely and well.
Dear Lord, please help me to live my life wisely and not foolishly

Psalm 134: O come, bless the Lord, all you who serve the Lord, who stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God. Lift up your hands to heaven and bless the Lord through the night. May the Lord bless you from Zion, he who made both heaven and earth.

In the Lord Jesus Christ, we order and call on such people to go on quietly working and earning the food that they eat. Never grow tired of doing what is right. May the Lord of peace give you peace always and everywhere

Luke 11.27-32: While Jesus was speaking, a woman in the crowd called out "Blessed the womb that bore you and the breasts that nursed you". Jesus also said "On Judgement day, the Queen of the South will rise up with the people of this generation and condemn them, because she came from a distant country to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here"
Jesus, greater than Solomon, please help me put your teaching into practice

For the past two days outside a gold-selling shop a few doors from MercyHK's canteen in Temple Street, Jordan, there has been a queue .... sometimes up to 30 people ...waiting to buy gold ...because the price of gold has recently gone up ... and because that shop gives one of the best prices in HK.

The bride:
His conversation is sweetness itself,
my beloved is totally lovable.
I am my beloved's, and my beloved is mine.

The groom:
You are beautiful, my love,
as beautiful as Jerusalem.

How beautiful are your feet and thighs.
The curve of your thighs is like the curve of a necklace.

Your navel is like an exquisite wine glass.
Your belly is like a heap of wheat.

Your two breasts are like two baby deer.

Your neck is like an ivory tower.

Your eyes are like beautiful water pools.
Your nose is like a majestic tower.

How beautiful you are, how charming,

Psalm 130: Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice. If you, O Lord, should record our guilt, Lord, who would survive? But with you is found forgiveness. For this we revere you.
