Readings are from Simple Bible

1 Kings 19:  Elijah once spent a night in a cave. The Lord then told him to stand at the mouth of the cave. Then there was a mighty wind that shattered trees and rocks. But the Lord was not in the wind. Then there was an earthquake. But the Lord was not in the earthquake. Then there was a gentle breeze. And the Lord was in the breeze. Not long after this Elijah called Elisha to become his follower.
Dear Lord, please help us be aware of your presence in our lives

My recording of this reading

Psalms 17-18: Lord,  when trouble breaks out on every side, please protect and help me. For you are my strength, my rock, my fortress, my savior. I love you, Lord who save me because you love me. Lord, you are my lamp who lightens my life. I will praise you among the nations.
Lord, you are worthy of all praise

 Listen

Colossians 1.9-14: I pray that you will continue to grow in your Christian life, a life full of good deeds. Never give in when trials come, but bravely, even joyfully, carry your cross each day. Keep on thanking the Father who has rescued us from the power of darkness, and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we gain our freedom, the forgiveness of our sins
Father, thank you for letting me be a Christian. Help me be a good Christian

Listen

Matthew 14.1-12: Not long after Jesus began traveling and teaching, King Herod arrested John the Baptist and put him in prison. This was because John had told Herod he was breaking the Law by living with Herodias,  his brother's wife. During a birthday party for Herod, the daughter of Herodias danced. Her dancing so pleased Herod that he said he would give her anything she wanted. Herodias told her to ask for the head of John the Baptist on a dish. Herod then had John beheaded. John's disciples came and buried the body.
Jesus, please give the world good leaders, and protect people from bad leaders like Herod

 Listen

Reflection: God's default position is "rescue" (Psalms & Colossians) but then can come a special time when, for a higher purpose, sacrifice is called for (... the death of John the Baptist ... the death of Jesus)

Readings are from Simple Bible

1 Kings 18: In the 3rd year of drought, the Lord sent Elijah to speak to Ahab. Elijah got Ahab to gather all the people and all the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal to produce fire to consume a sacrificed bull. Elijah mocked the false prophets as they ranted and raved and cut themselves, but produced no fire for their bull. Then Elijah got the people to pour water on his bull and he prayed to God to hear his prayer. A fire from heaven then consumed the bull and the people acknowledged the Lord as God. Elijah then told Ahab there would soon be rain, and the sky grew dark and produced torrents of rain.
Dear God, please help people not to follow false gods

My recording of this reading

Psalm 16: Please protect me, Lord, I take refuge in you. You are the only source of all true happiness. I bless you, Lord, who guide and lead me. Even at night you direct my heart. And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad. My body shall rest in safety now and always. You will show me the path of life, the fullness of joy in your presence, at your right hand, happiness for ever.
Thank you, Lord, for the little joys you give us each day .... and the big joy you've prepared for us in Heaven.

Listen

Colossians 1.1-6: From Paul, appointed by God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, to the Christians in Colossae. Grace and peace to you from God our Father. I always pray for you and give thanks for your faith in Christ Jesus, and the love you show to others because of the hope which is stored up for you in heaven. The Good News is spreading all over the world, bringing blessings to so many people
Jesus, increase my faith, hope and love. Help me  spread the Good News in my corner of the world

Listen

Matthew 13.53-58: One day Jesus went to Nazareth, his home town. In the prayer hall there he taught the local people. But the local people would not accept him.  They said "Where did he get such wisdom and miraculous power? He is just a carpenter's son. His mother is that woman called Mary. His brothers are James, Joseph, Simon and Jude. His sisters are here, too. He's nobody special." Jesus said to them "A prophet is despised only in his own country and his own house". And he did not work many miracles there because of their lack of faith.
Jesus, please give me more faith in you .... and don't let me reject people

1 Kings 17: When Ahab was king of Israel, in the 9th century B.C., Elijah was a prophet of the Lord. Elijah told Ahab there would be no rain for a long time because the people were following the cult of Baal. Elijah did miracles in the name of the Lord: he blessed a poor widow's food to make it increase, and he brought back to life a young boy who had died.
Dear God, please bless our prayers as you blessed the prayers of Elijah

My recording of this reading

Psalms 14-15: So many people live and act as if God doesn't exist. Some foolish people even say there is no God. So many people have left the way of justice and truth. So many people follow the way of falsehood. Lord, help us to live as we should. Help us not to slander, help us not to wrong others.
Lord, help us to stand firm in the way of goodness

Philippians 4.11-20: I have learnt how to manage on whatever I have. I am ready for anything anywhere: full stomach or empty stomach, poverty or plenty. There is nothing I cannot master with the help of the One who gives me strength. I thank you my friends for supporting me financially, especially when I was in great need.
Jesus, bless everyone who has helped me in any way since the day I was born

Matthew 13: Jesus said to the people: The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed. It's the smallest of all seeds. But it becomes a big bush, then a big tree that the birds live in. The kingdom of heaven is like yeast which leavens flour. The kingdom of heaven is like  treasure in a field. Someone finds it, then sells all they have to buy the field. The kingdom of heaven is like a fishing net that catches all sorts of fish. Good fish are put in a basket. Useless fish are thrown away. So at the end of time, bad people will be thrown into hell. Jesus, may your kingdom come, your will be done

c.f. readings for Sunday 5

Isaiah 6: In the year 740 B.C., I had a vision of the Lord God in Heaven: Above the Lord were 6 angels who cried out "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God. His glory fills the whole earth." Then I heard a voice asking "Whom shall I send? Who will be our messenger?" I answered "Here I am, send me." Then the Lord sent me to be a prophet to the people
Here I am, Lord, send me. I'm willing to do anything you want me to do

My recording of this reading

Psalm 138: I thank you, Lord, with all my heart. You have heard the words of my mouth. With the angels I will bless you. I will adore you in your holy temple. I thank you for your faithfulness and love which are far above what we can understand. On the day I called you answered. You increased the strength of my soul. All earth's kings shall thank you when they hear the words of your mouth. They shall sing of the Lord's ways: "How great is the glory of the Lord!" Though I walk in the midst of affliction
you give me life and frustrate my foes. Your love, O Lord, is eternal. Do not abandon us whom you have made.

Lord, when we remember how much you love us and help us, every day of the year is a Thanksgiving Day

 Listen

1 Corinthians 15.9-11: I am the least of the apostles. In fact, since I persecuted the Church of God, I hardly deserve the name apostle. But by God's grace I am what I am, and the grace that he gave me has not been fruitless. On the contrary, I, or rather the grace of God in my heart, have worked harder than any of the others, preaching the same message that they preach.
Jesus, may your grace in me be more fruitful

 Listen

Luke 5.1-11: One day when Jesus was standing near the Lake of Gennesaret, with people pressing round him listening to the word of God, he saw two fishing boats near the bank. He got into one boat, it belonged to Simon Peter, and taught people from the boat, away from the shore a little distance. When he'd finished speaking he said to Simon "Go out further to deep water and use your nets for a catch of fish". Simon replied "Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but if you say so I'll lower the nets". They soon caught so many fish that the nets began to tear. They called to their friends in the second boat to come and help. Both boats were soon filled with fish. Peter fell at Jesus' knees and said "Leave me, Lord, I am a sinful man", for he was overcome by the catch they had made, as were James and John who were his partners. But Jesus said to Simon "Don't be afraid. From now on, you will be fishers of men".  Simon and his friends then left everything to follow Jesus.
Jesus,  bless and protect  all "fishers of men"

1 Kings 12-16: After Solomon died, his son Rehoboam became king. The people asked Rehoboam not to be harsh like Solomon.
Solomon had imposed heavy taxes, enforced labor etc.
Rehoboam asked the elders for advice. They said "Treat the people kindly and they will serve you." Rehoboam asked his peers for advice. They said "Treat the people more harshly than your father." Rehoboam accepted the advice of his peers. Therefore the people of Israel rejected him as king. Only the people of Judah accepted him. The people of Israel made Jeroboam king. He had previously led an unsuccessful revolt against Solomon. Rehoboam and Jeroboam died and were succeeded by various kings who ruled over Judah and Israel.
Dear God, please help leaders be kind to their people

My recording of this reading

Psalms 9-13: I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart. You have so often rescued me from trouble. Thank you! You are the best helper for people in trouble. Please keep on helping me when troubles come. Please stop bad people from hurting others. Please let peoples in all countries know they must avoid evil and live a life of justice.
Dear Lord, thank you for so often rescuing me

Listen

Philippians 4.4-9: I want you to be happy, always happy in the Lord. Let your tolerance be evident to everyone. If there is anything you need, with prayer and thanksgiving ask God for it. Fill your minds with everything that is true, everything that is noble, everything that is good and pure, everything that is worthwhile. Then the God of peace will be with you.
Jesus, please fill my mind with good things

Listen

Matthew 13.24-43Jesus told the people another story: The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. An enemy came and sowed weeds in the same field. When the good seed sprouted, so did the weeds. The man's servants asked if they should get rid of the weeds. "No", said the man, "you might damage the good seed if you do that. Let them both grow till harvest time. Then burn the weeds." Then Jesus explained his story: "I am the sower. The field is the world. The good seed stands for people of good will. The weeds stand for people of bad will. The enemy is Satan. At the end of the world, the Son of Man will send his angels to sort out the good and the bad people. Bad people will go to hell.  Good people will go to heaven".
Jesus, please protect good people from bad people
Listen

Reflection: "The sower, when he sees weeds sprouting among the grain does not grumble or overreact. He or she finds a way to let the word take flesh in a particular situation and bear fruits of new life, however imperfect or incomplete these may appear"  (Pope Francis, No. 24 Joy of the Gospel)  .... this has great relevance for parents, teachers .... and indeed for each one of us in our own personal life!

1 Kings 11: Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines. Many of these women were foreigners. As Solomon grew old, his foreign women swayed his heart to allow the worship of foreign idols. This displeased the Lord and led to the breakup of Solomon's kingdom. Solomon was king for 40 years and then died.
Dear God, please protect leaders from corruption

My recording of this reading

Psalm 8: How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth. When I see the heavens, the work of your hands, the moon and stars which you have arranged, then I stop and think: what are we insignificant humans that you should care about us? Yet you have put us in charge of the world. Everything is subject to our control.
How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth

Philippians 3.20 - 4.1: Our homeland is in heaven. We wait for the Savior from heaven who will transfigure these wretched bodies of ours into copies of his glorious body. He will do this by the same power he has as C.E.O. of the universe. So, do not stop running but remain faithful in the Lord
Jesus, please increase my longing for heaven

Listen

Matthew 13.1-23: One day Jesus told the people this story: A farmer was planting seeds in his field. Some seeds fell on the path. Birds ate them. Some seeds fell on rocky ground. They became sickly plants, without roots, and died. Some seeds fell among thorns. When they became plants, they were choked by the thorns. Some seeds fell on good soil and produced a rich harvest. People who hear God's word without good will are like the seeds on the path. They are easy prey for Satan. People who hear God's word only superficially are like the seeds on rocky ground. As soon as difficulties come, such people easily give up. People who hear God's word with one ear
but with the other listen to the call of greed and pleasure are like the seeds among thorns. Greed kills the word. People who hear God's word with good will and put it into practice are like the good seeds which produced a rich harvest.

Jesus, please help me be good seed!

Listen

Reflection: The seed is the same, but the results are different ...

1 Kings 10: Solomon's wealth continued to grow. He acquired a fleet of ships for trading. He also had a huge force of chariots and horses. The queen of Sheba heard about Solomon's wisdom and came to visit him. Solomon answered all her questions. None of her questions was too difficult for him.

Psalm 7: Lord God, I take refuge in you. Please rescue me from people who are trying to hurt me. Lord, please stop bad people from doing bad things. Please help good people to keep on doing good things. Lord, I will sing to you and thank you for your goodness to me.

Philippians 3.12-14: I am not yet perfect. I have not yet won the race. But I am still running, trying to capture the prize for which Christ Jesus captured me, I forget the past, and strain ahead for what is still to come. I am racing for the finish, for the prize to which God calls us to receive in Christ Jesus
Jesus, please help me keep running each day!

Listen

Matthew 12.46-50: One day when Jesus was speaking to a crowd of people inside a house, his mother and brothers arrived at the house. From outside the house they sent a message to say they would like to speak with him. When Jesus heard they were there, he said "Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?" Then holding out his hand towards his disciples he said "Here are my mother and brothers. Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven, that person is my brother and sister and mother."
Brother Jesus,  please help me do the will of your Father in heaven

  Listen

Reflection: Jesus did not say "Whoever is baptised is my brother/sister/mother" (although he clearly wants all people to be baptised) but "whoever does the will of my Father in heaven .....". This is another way of looking at "Baptism by desire" .... people who do God's will can be said to be "baptised in the heart"
