Because of the pandemic, MercyHK's shop in Temple Street is closed and all activities at the Dr Jesus Centre have been suspended. No restart date yet

Tues Feb 22

Yesterday was Day 3 of the project to provide emergency accommodation for the people in this new SCMP vdideo report. It was another long day for me which began two nights ago when I had just got into bed at midnight (after some late  arrivals at our centres) ... and the phone went .... a woman about to leave from HK airport had tested positive ... and was not allowed to leave ... and had nowhere to go. Her consulate phone the NGO HELP for Domestic Helpers who phoned me .... and I welcomed the poor distressed woman when she arrived in Jordan about 1.15am.
Through the day yesterday more women came to our centres .... we now have 11 at the Dr Jesus Centre and 6 at the nearby new centre and 2 at other places .... with 6 more due today!
Much shopping, much arranging transport, much meeting people   ... all with umbrella on a wet and cold day.
Last night our local parish priest Fr Patrick Sun kindly joined me for a couple of hours work taking items and meals to the centres. During the day many kind people and groups came with items for the centres. God bless them and all the guests!

Because of the pandemic, MercyHK's shop in Temple Street is closed and all activities at the Dr Jesus Centre have been suspended. No restart date yet

Monday Feb 21

Yesterday and last night were replays of Sunday (below) ... with homeless people arriving even late last night .... people who belong to this group ... so .... no usual menu for today ... just a request for prayers please for the many homeless people who are sleeping out these nights in wet and freezing weather. There are now 10 women staying at the Dr Jesus Centre and two at a nearby new centre especially rented for this situation.

God bless everyone at this time of Covid!

John

Sun Feb 20

I spent all of yesterday and a large part of last night helping some of the people in this report to find accommodation in YMT .... including a group of them now staying at the Dr Jesus Centre which has been turned into a "field hospital" (as Pope Francis says). The NGO HELP for Domestic Helpers will daily monitor the health of the guests and liaise with government officials (if any can be found)

c.f. readings for Sunday 7

1 Samuel 20-24: Jonathan again tried to help David make peace with Saul. But Saul was full of anger and just wanted to kill David. David then became a nomad, roaming from place to place, continually pursued by Saul's soldiers. David once had a chance to kill Saul but David refused to kill him. David said: "Saul is the anointed one of the Lord. It is wrong for me to hurt him." Even though Saul hated and hunted David, David respected and protected Saul
Dear God, when other people treat me unkindly, please help me to be kind to them, as David was kind to Saul

My recording of this reading

Psalm 103: My soul, give thanks to the Lord. All my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord and never forget all his blessings. It is he who forgives all your guilt, who heals every one of your ills. It is he who fills your life with good things, renewing your youth like an eagle's life. The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. As the heavens are high above the earth so strong is his love for those who love him. As far as the East is from the West, so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his children, the Lord has pity on all who love and honor him. Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels, who heed the voice of his word. Give thanks to the Lord, everyone and everything. My soul, give thanks to the Lord!
Thank you, Lord, for your love and compassion

 Listen

Luke 6.27-38Jesus said to the people "Love your enemies. Do good to people who hate you. Pray for people who are unkind to you. Treat others as you would like them to treat you. Be compassionate as your heavenly Father is compassionate. Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Grant pardon, and you will be pardoned. Give, and there will be gifts for you. The amount you measure out is the amount you will be given back".
Jesus, bless ....(name)....who was unkind to me

Reflection on the above readings: Unforgiveness is bad for our health. It plays a major part in the 80% of our sicknesses which have a psycho-somatic aspect. As the Chinese saying puts it: "All sickness starts in the heart"

Today I am using readings from Feb 19,1973!

Isaiah 61: The spirit of the Lord has been given to me, for the Lord has anointed me. He has sent me to bring good news to the poor,
to bind up broken hearts, to proclaim liberty to captives, freedom to those in prison, to comfort people who mourn, to replace their sadness with praise. I exult for joy in the Lord, my soul rejoices in my God, for as the earth makes plants to grow, and as a garden makes seeds spring up, so the Lord will make integrity and praise spring up in the sight of the nations.

Lord, please give comfort and courage to people who are sad

My recording of this reading

Psalm 89: I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord. Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever. The heavens proclaim your wonders, O Lord. The heavens are yours, the world is yours. Blessed the people who find joy in you, who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face.
Thank you, Lord, for our beautiful world

Listen

2 Tim 4.1-5: In the presence of God our Father and of Christ Jesus, I give you this command: proclaim the Good News and, welcome or unwelcome, insist on it. Refute falsehood, correct error, call to obedience - but do this with patience. Be prepared to face people who jettison sound teaching in favor of the latest novelty. Instead of listing to the truth, they will turn to myths. Make the spreading of the Good News your life's work
Jesus, please protect me from junk ideas and misleading  teachers

Listen

John 13. 34-35: Jesus said to his disciples at the meal "I give you a new commandment: love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also must love one another.  By this love you have for one another, everyone will know that you are my disciples"
Jesus, please help all Christians to love one another as you have loved us

2 Kings 6: The king of Aram was at war with Israel. But each time he planned an attack, Elisha warned the king of Israel and the attack was foiled. The king of Aram therefore sent soldiers to capture Elisha. Elisha prayed to God for help and the soldiers were temporarily blinded. While they were blinded, Elisha led them to the king of Israel. The king of Israel asked Elisha "Shall I kill them?" Elisha told him not to kill them but to feed them and let them go. After this there was peace for a time between Aram and Israel.
Dear God, please bless our enemies, and help us be kind to them

My recording of this reading

Psalm 28: To you, O Lord, I call, my rock, hear me. If you do not heed, I shall become like people in the grave. Lord, you are my strength and my shield. In you my heart trusts. Thank you, Lord, for so often hearing my prayer. I will always thank and praise you. You are the strength of your people Israel. Save your people. Be our shepherd and carry us for ever.
Lord, please help people who are in big danger today

Colossians 3.12-14: You are God's special friends. He loves you. You should be clothed in sincere compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Allow for other's weaknesses. Forgive each other as soon as a quarrel begins. The Lord has forgiven you. You must forgive others. Over all these clothes, to keep them together and to complete them, put on love
Jesus, help me be a better and kinder person

Matthew 16.13-20: One day Jesus asked his disciples "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" The disciples replied "Some people say you are one of the famous prophets". Jesus then asked them "And what about you. Who do you say I am?" Peter answered "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God". Jesus then said to Peter "Blessed are you, for my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. So I now say to you: you are Peter ('the rock') and on this rock I will build my church. I will give you the keys of the kingdom."
Jesus, Son of God,  please help the church to continue your work on earth

2 Kings 5: Naaman was an army commander for the king of Aram. Naaman enjoyed success and favor, but he was a leper. He heard about Elisha and the king sent him to Elisha with  gifts of gold, silver and garments to request healing. When Naaman reached Elisha's house, Elisha sent him a message: "Bathe 7 times in the Jordan River." At first Naaman was angry at this message, having expected Elisha to see and heal him personally. But then he humbly bathed 7 times in the Jordan and his flesh became clean once more. Elisha declined Naaman's gifts. But after Naaman left Elisha, Elisha's servant Gehazi caught up with Naaman and deceitfully obtained some silver. Elisha confronted Gehazi about this and Gehazi became a leper.
Dear God, please heal everyone who has leprosy

My recording of this reading

Psalm 27: The Lord is my light and my help, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, before whom shall I shrink? Though an army encamp against me, even then would I trust. There is one thing I ask of the Lord, for this I long: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek. Hide not your face. I am sure I will see your goodness in the land of the living. Hope in the Lord, hold firm and take heart. Hope in the Lord!
Lord, you are my light and my help. I will always praise you

Listen

Colossians 3.5-11: Kill all the bad things that trouble earthly life: fornication, impurity, evil desires, greed, anger, bad temper, spitefulness, abusive language, dirty talk and lying. You have deleted your old self, and have downloaded a fresh copy of the divine image. That image is Christ. He must be installed in every part of your life
Jesus, take over my life. Install yourself in every part of my life

Matthew 15.29-31: Jesus went up into the hills near the Lake of Galilee. Large crowds came to him bringing the lame, the crippled, the blind, the dumb and many others. These they put down at Jesus' feet. Jesus healed them all. The crowds praised the God of Israel when they saw the dumb speaking, cripples whole again, the lame walking and the blind able to see.
Jesus, please give sick people more faith in your healing love

2 Kings 4: A poor widow whose husband had been a prophet asked Elisha for help when a creditor demanded her two sons as slaves. All she had was a small pot of oil, not enough to pay her debts. Elisha told her to get many jars, and start pouring oil from the pot into the jars. As she and her sons did this, the oil did not run out. Elisha told her to sell the oil to pay off her debts. At another time Elisha  brought back to life a dead child. He also once brought about a miraculous multiplication of bread.

Matthew 15.21-28: Jesus went to the coastal district near Tyre and Sidon. A foreign woman followed him and shouted "Sir, Son of David, have pity on me. My daughter is tormented by an evil spirit." At first Jesus did not answer her, so his disciples said to him "Help her, because she keeps shouting after us." Jesus replied "I was sent only to the people of Israel". The foreign woman by now was kneeling at Jesus' feet. "Lord, help me" she pleaded. Jesus said to her "Woman, you have great faith. Your wish is granted". At that very moment, her daughter was healed.
Jesus, please give sick people great faith in you

2 Kings 2-3: The Lord revealed to Elisha and other prophets that Elijah would be taken up to heaven in a whirlwind. Elisha said to Elijah "Let me inherit a double share of your spirit." Then a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. The spirit of Elijah then came to rest on Elisha and he began to do miracles by the power of the Lord.
Holy Spirit of God, please increase your influence in my life

My recording of this reading

Psalm 23: The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose. Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my drooping spirit. He guides me along the right path. He is true to his name. If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear. You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort. You have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes. My head you have anointed with oil. My cup is overflowing. Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord's own house shall I dwell for ever and ever.

Jesus, may my focus always be on you

Matthew 15.1-20: Some religious leaders asked Jesus "Why do your disciples ignore many external practices of our religion?" Jesus answered, with the words of the prophet Isaiah: "This people honors me with external lip-service, while their hearts are far from me." Jesus also said "It's not certain foods or lack of washing  that makes a person unclean. It's evil in the  heart that makes a person unclean. Evil intentions like murder, adultery, fornication, theft, perjury, slander. These are the things that make a person unclean."

2 Kings 1: Ahaziah, king of Israel, was seriously ill after a fall. He tried to send messengers to the temple of a false god to ask about his future. But the Lord sent Elijah the prophet to intercept the messengers and tell them that the king would die. The king sent 50 soldiers to arrest Elijah but as they approached Elijah, fire from heaven destroyed them. The king sent another 50 soldiers. They too were destroyed by fire from heaven. A third group of 50 was sent. They begged Elijah to spare them. The Lord told Elijah to go with them to the king. Elijah then told the king to his face that he would soon die because he had tried to ask a false god about his future. Not long after this, Ahaziah died.
Dear Lord, please don't let us ever get involved with false religion

My recording of this reading

Psalm 22: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? I call to you for help, but day and night you give no reply. I am a worm and not a man. Everyone who sees me makes fun of me. They taunt me: "He trusted in the Lord, why doesn't the Lord help him?" Like water I am poured out, my bones no longer connected. My throat is parched, my tongue sticks to my jaws. Many evil people attack me.
They make holes in my hands and my feet. They await my death. They divide my clothing among them, they throw a dice for my robe. Yet I know Lord, that  you are good and holy. I know how you heard the cries of our ancestors and you helped them. It was you who took me from the womb and entrusted me to my mother's breast. To you I was committed from my birth, from my mother's womb you have been my God. Lord, I trust in you even now. I trust you will not scorn my prayer. Even now I praise you as my Creator. May all the nations know and worship you.

Lord, please help people who are in big trouble right now, especially people whose lives are in danger

Matthew 14.34-36: When Jesus got out of the boat on the other side of the lake, people recognized him and news of his presence spread quickly.
