Britain has armed some of the most brutal
regimes of the last 40 years. All too often these arms sales are made by lending money, which leaves a mountain of debt to be paid by the people of these countries, long after the dictator has been toppled. See Jubilee Debt Campaign |

Our
encounter with Jesus fills our hearts with joy Pope Francis' own beautiful reflection one week after World Youth Day: We must never forget that the World Youth days are not “fireworks”, moments of enthusiasm that end with themselves; they are stages of a long journey. The encounter with the living Jesus fills the heart with joy. We have seen this in the faces of the youths in Rio. But this experience must face the daily vanity, the poison of emptiness that insinuates itself into our society based on profit and having things, that deludes young people with consumerism |

Our Church further down the track - re the contrast between the Roman, curial Church, gomflated with pomp and superiority, forever concerned with its dignity and status, super-dogmatic, assertive, isolated, reactionary and authoritarian ...and "the other Church" ... the real one .... the People of God, inclusive, engaged in the world, the protector and champion of the poor, based on the values and principles of Jesus as set out in the Gospels, with a humble pope at the head, surrounded and assisted by a college of bishops |

People's
Pope brings winds of change On the plane back to Rome, he held an impromptu press conference, standing at the front holding a microphone like a genial stand-up comedian. Looking at the newspaper photographs, one half-expected him to start crooning Moon River. But it was unprecedented - not many world leaders will spend 80 minutes being grilled by journalists, unmediated and unscripted, with no topic out of bounds |

Taking
global warming seriously
|
Dangerous nuclear and
fossil-fueled power plants need to be phased out with all due speed. In
the interim, these plants and other polluting industries need broad, tough
antipollution regulations and restrictions. Abundantly safe and clean solar, wind and geothermal sources of energy need to be put on the fast track and receive enormous financial investments to slow down and eventually reverse climate change and global warming.

Africa newspapers mention v2catholic article: Tanzania on the spot Political will ‘is lacking’ |
On July 21 this website
posted an article Drug
Mules, with the aim of letting people in Africa (especially Tanzania)
know that bringing drugs to Hong Kong means a 99% chance of being arrested
and put in prison for 9 to 21 years. The article named a prominent
Tanzanian politician, Iddi Azan, as one of the drug lords responsible for
drugs coming to Hong Kong. Yesterday morning I heard from some HK prison inmates that bloggers & newspapers in Tanzania have picked up the story. Around 4pm when I left the prison I had a phone call from a mysterious Tanzanian man (in HK) to say that because of the story, his "uncle" (Iddi Azan) was arrested two days ago ...and mysterious man would like to meet me. jw (More on tomorrow's menu DV) |

Pope's
Catholic health check The perspectives of Benedict and Francis are different, but each has its place in the Catholic tradition. Benedict's perspective is Benedictine, Francis' is Franciscan; one reflects the world of the monastery where the monks spend their lives, the other the world of the friary from which friars go on mission among the people. But in a world that is changing and a Catholic world that is disconcerted, the reception that Francis has received (in Brazil) suggests that the path to Catholic renewal may be Franciscan |

So
we got married. With the many pressures on our lives, marriage has not escaped the questioning of a changing world. We need not be judgemental whilst we personally adhere to a Christian view of a sacrament that is not a one-off morning in a dressed-up church but is a continual life experience, ever changing and adapting, both joyous and sorrowful |
