Last night and today I am at an
OMI meeting at a retreat centre on the HK side of the border with China.
Next to the retreat centre is a large Catholic secondary school....whose
friendly principal I met (again) yesterday at the school's front gate,
next to the retreat centre front gate. When I asked about school numbers
he told me that there are 101 students who commute to the school each day
from across the border ... Mainland students, not HK students living in
China....very highly motivated students. In fact, many schools on
the HK side of the border now have such students. God bless such schools
and such students!

From
a Hong Kong reader:
|
I was glad to read the article on A
plea for caution by Putin. I would like to tell you that
when I travelled to Russia last September I could feel that people
really like Putin because their lives have truly improved.
I saw less American influence - less popular American brand names/food
etc. I was hoping they could keep it that way. The Russians
are very cultured and many still retain their faith. When I asked
my tour guides why the 3 girls were jailed for dancing in the Cathedral
they said because the place was holy and was meant to be respected,
and they did think the girls' act was wrong (but I think the punishment
can be less heavy).
My friends and I are aware that much of
the news we hear is controlled by the English media, i.e. the US or the
British who act like brothers on political issues. I just pray
that we can have more balanced views and less control from these two
countries. If we know the languages of other countries, perhaps we
will know that the story we hear from them could be very different.

Meanwhile the drug lord who tricked her is driving a luxury car and enjoying life. May the movie on today's menu The House I Live In motivate us to show more concern about the drug issue | |||

President
Putin's letter to the New York Time re Syria: A
plea for caution - amazing letter! - one of several thousand (!) comments: "Aside from the obviously specious claim that it was the rebels who used the gas, much of this post is thought provoking and has a tone of reasonableness that I find disturbing to my prejudices. What a crazy world we are living in when Russia sounds more sane and responsible than our own government on a serious international crisis. It's as if I have blundered into some bizarre parallel universe" But Simon Tisdall not impressed |

Do you wish to honour the body of Christ?
Do not ignore him when he is naked. He who said: "This is my body" is the same who said: "You saw me hungry and you gave me no food", and "Whatever you did to the least of my brothers you did also to me" What good is it if the Eucharistic table is overloaded with golden chalices when your brother is dying of hunger? Start by satisfying his hunger and then with what is left you may adorn the altar as well - St John Chrysostom, whose feast day is today |

On July 21, this website, in partnership with
media and bloggers in Tanzania, began a campaign to warn people about the
dangers of bringing drugs to Hong Kong as "drug mules". In
the months before the campaign began, at least 2 or 3 new Tanzanians were
arrested on arrival in HK each week, swelling the number of Tanzanian
inmates to about 200. IN THE PAST SIX WEEKS, NOT ONE NEW TANZANIAN (MALE) HAS JOINED THE PRISON POPULATION OF HK. IN FACT, IN THE PAST SIX WEEKS, NOT ONE AFRICAN (MALE) HAS BEEN ARRESTED ON ARRIVAL IN HK. THE CAMPAIGN HAS BEEN BLESSED BY THE GOOD LORD .....AND AROUND 20 MEN ARE NOW WITH THEIR FAMILIES IN AFRICA, INSTEAD OF BEING IN PRISON IN HONG KONG. Next Monday, after a bi-monthly visit to a women's prison on Sunday, I hope to be able report that no Tanzanian/African women have joined the prison population in the past 6 weeks. Let's keep the campaign going until the next objective is achieved: good government in Tanzania with the 2015 elections ....an end to the alliance between politicians and the drug trade |

Reflection on
September 15 Sunday readings: Ersatz god (an explanation of "ersatz" ! ...a new word for me...jw) The Spirit of Jesus makes God known to you. You can hear Him speaking to you; you can feel His emotions; you can know His plans for your life. And when this encounter takes place you will join me in this conviction: nothing can be compared with the thrill of hearing God speaking directly to us. |
