Imitating Pope Francis Francis

Tuesday  December 3

Feast of Saint Francis Xavier

Readings for Mass of St Francis Xavier

461 years ago today, on a remote island off the coast of China, St Francis Xavier died. He could see China some 14km across the sea, but could not enter it. In the months before he died, he offered up his suffering that someone else might follow him and enter China. On October 6, 1552, Matteo Ricci was born in Italy. Xavier's prayer was answered two months before he died

Xavier died on the island today known as Shangchuan.
I've been privileged to visit there a number of times:
1993 with Fr Don Hughes OMI     2005-01-29 with group from Zhaoqing

Sometimes we resist change until we are forced to change:
so a busy person who has a heart attack from over-work changes their lifestyle....so a company making large cars using excessive fuel   changes to smaller cars because of falling sales....so the Catholic Church changes its theory and practice about how to handle cases of abuse of children - after being forced to change by secular authorities and the media ....and c.f. corrupt governments being forced to change by public protests

But the longer we take to change, usually the worse our problems become.  The sooner we change, the more our  problems can be minimised. Leaders willing to change without being forced to change are an exception. Pope Francis is one. May his efforts for change be supported and not thwarted ...for the sake of the Church and of the world.  (John W)

The readings of today's Mass for the First Sunday of Advent

Reflection on today's Mass readings by Daniel Daring:
 Holy Living
Our world is in love with mystics and visionaries. We like to listen to their descriptions of how great God is and what He is going to do in the near future. However, we have less appreciation for the prophets who plainly state what God demands from us. How trite and prosaic is a call to repentance compared with a description of God's majesty or a prediction of the coming end of the world. And yet, at the beginning of this Advent Season, we hear such a prosaic message from the prophet Isaiah: “O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord”

A mother went to wake her son for church one Sunday morning. When she knocked on his door, he said, “I’m not going!”

“Why not?” asked his mother.

“I’ll give you two good reasons,” he said. “One, they don’t like me. Two, I don’t like them.”

His mother replied, “I’ll give you two good reasons why YOU WILL go to church. One, you’re 47 years old. Two, you’re the pastor!”

China's dispatch of jets ratchets up tension over air zone
JW: Sad to say, these days there's almost a compulsive hatred for Japan in most Chinese media, Hong Kong included.  Japanese atrocities in China before and during World War II are one reason, a very  big and understandable reason. Another reason is that "Japan bashing" is useful for attracting readers and for distracting people from domestic issues. Not forgetting the recent aggressive posturing by the Japanese prime minister

May the spirit of Deng Xiao-ping be remembered and imitated at this troubled time. When confronted with the same issue of the Diaoyu-Senkaku Islands, he famously said something like: "This problem is too difficult for the time being. Let's not make hasty mistakes trying to solve it now. Let's leave it for a wiser generation to solve."

3. I invite all Christians, everywhere, at this very moment, to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ, or at least an openness to letting him encounter them; I ask all of you to do this unfailingly each day. No one should think that this invitation is not meant for him or her, since “no one is excluded from the joy brought by the Lord”. The Lord does not disappoint those who take this risk; whenever we take a step towards Jesus, we come to realize that he is already there, waiting for us with open arms

It's never been easy for outsiders, or for locals either, to know exactly what Beijing's leaders have in mind. The issue of the Diaoyu-Senkaku islands is an example. It's against the tide, unexpected, counter-productive etc etc ....so why did they announce an air-defence zone?  My hope is that wiser heads - in Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul etc - will have a meeting that comes to the conclusion: let's share the area's resources, let's set up an economic union (like the European Union) ....thereby making billions of dollars...instead of a crazy conflict that will cost billions of dollars and who knows how many lives?

2.
The great danger in today’s world, pervaded as it is by consumerism, is the desolation and anguish born of a complacent yet covetous heart, the feverish pursuit of frivolous pleasures, and a blunted conscience. Whenever our interior life becomes caught up in its own interests and concerns, there is no longer room for others, no place for the poor. God’s voice is no longer heard, the quiet joy of his love is no longer felt, and the desire to do good fades. This is a very real danger for believers too. Many fall prey to it, and end up resentful, angry and listless. That is no way to live a dignified and fulfilled life; it is not God’s will for us, nor is it the life in the Spirit which has its source in the heart of the risen Christ.

THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus. Those who accept his offer of salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness and loneliness. With Christ joy is constantly born anew. In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.

Once there was a family of skunks who lived in a hollow tree. There were two baby skunks. Their names were In and Out.
Now whenever In went out, Out came in, and whenever Out went out, In came in. If In happened to be in and wanted to go out, he would not go out until Out came in. And if Out happened to be in, and wanted to go out, he would not go out until In came in.

One day a big storm blew up, and the mother and father skunks were worried about their children. So they quickly looked around to see whether In was in and Out was out or if Out was in and In was out. Out happened to be in right then. The mother skunk said to Out, "Out, go out and bring In in, please. I'm worried about him."

Out said, "Sure thing, Mama." So Out went out, and for the very first time Out and In were out at the same time. Just a minute or two later Out came back in, and In came in behind him. For the first time in a long time In and Out were in at the same time.

The mother skunk was amazed. "Out, how did you find your brother so quickly?" she asked. "Oh, Mama, it was easy," Out said. "In stinked!"  (instinct)
