113.
The salvation which God has wrought, and the Church joyfully proclaims, is for everyone. God has found a way to unite himself to every human being in every age. He has chosen to call them together as a people and not as isolated individuals.

No one is saved by himself or herself, individually, or by his or her own efforts. God attracts us by taking into account the complex interweaving of personal relationships entailed in the life of a human community

This people which God has chosen and called is the Church. Jesus did not tell the apostles to form an exclusive and elite group. He said: “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Mt 28:19).

Saint Paul tells us in the people of God, in the Church, “there is neither Jew or Greek... for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Gal 3:28).

To those who feel far from God and the Church, to all those who are fearful or indifferent, I would like to say this: the Lord, with great respect and love, is also calling you to be a part of his people!

Happy Annunciation today!

When Mary was asked by Gabriel to be the mother of the Messiah,
Mary was only about 15 or 16 years old

Unlike Eve who said "no", Mary said "yes"

May we say "yes" to love of God and care for neighbour a bit more in our lives ...maybe starting with more concern for the poor following the lead of  Pope Francis

Whether we are 15 or 50 or 85, may we always say "yes"

Priests and people - a reflection  (Frank Campbell)
Despite Gaudium Evangelii,  many parishes still exist to promote a one-to-one relationship with God mediated by a priest. The gathered community is dedicated to personal piety, worship and celebration - not to work for the transformation of society.  It is in this sense that that I would describe many parishes an ‘unevangelized’

A people for everyone

112. The salvation which God offers us is the work of his mercy. No human efforts, however good they may be, can enable us to merit so great a gift. God, by his sheer grace, draws us to himself and makes us one with him.

He sends his Spirit into our hearts to make us his children, transforming us and enabling us to respond to his love by our lives. The Church is sent by Jesus Christ as the sacrament of the salvation offered by God.

Through her evangelizing activity, she cooperates as an instrument of that divine grace which works unceasingly and inscrutably. Benedict XVI put it nicely at the beginning of the Synod’s reflections: “It is important always to know that the first word, the true initiative, the true activity comes from God and only by inserting ourselves into the divine initiative, only (by) begging for this divine initiative, shall we too be able to become – with him and in him – evangelizers”.

This principle of the primacy of grace must be a beacon which constantly illuminates our reflections on evangelization.

Reflection on today's readings by Daniel Daring
Have You Heard it for Yourself?

The encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman poses a direct challenge to our Churches' claims and regulations, and to our popular understanding of what constitutes being a Christian.  I would like to highlight three issues that are particularly connected with the reading of this Gospel: divisions among Christians, women in ministry, and a personal understanding who Jesus is.

The entire people of God proclaims the Gospel

111. Evangelization is the task of the Church. The Church, as the agent of evangelization, is more than an organic and hierarchical institution; she is first and foremost a people advancing on its pilgrim way towards God

She is certainly a mystery rooted in the Trinity, yet she exists concretely in history as a people of pilgrims and evangelizers, transcending any institutional expression, however necessary.

I would like to dwell briefly on this way of understanding the Church, whose ultimate foundation is in the free and gracious initiative of God.

To go with today's Gospel about Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well:

WIFE: “There’s trouble with the car. It has water in the carburetor.”
HUSBAND: “Water in the carburetor? That’s ridiculous.”
WIFE: “I tell you the car has water in the carburetor.”
HUSBAND: “You don’t even know what a carburetor is. I’ll check it out. Where’s the car?”
WIFE: “In the pool.”

Peter J Wilkinson looks at ministry trends at parish level:
Who ministers in Australia's parishes?
(a similar scene to that in many countries...)

Local vocations to the priesthood remain low, religious sisters will make a declining contribution, and many bishops have not warmed to permanent deacons. Coupled with the continuing decline in Mass attendance and the reduced number of parishes, it takes great hope and faith to see an upturn in parish vitality just around the corner

110.
After having considered some of the challenges of the present, I would now like to speak of the task which bears upon us in every age and place, for “there can be no true evangelization without the explicit proclamation of Jesus as Lord”, and without “the primacy of the proclamation of Jesus Christ in all evangelizing work”.

Acknowledging the concerns of the Asian bishops, John Paul II told them that if the Church “is to fulfil its providential destiny, evangelization as the joyful, patient and progressive preaching of the saving death and resurrection of Jesus Christ must be your absolute priority.” These words hold true for all of us.

A number of times I've mentioned the experiences I've had with inmates whose first language is not English....like the time I asked a guy from Pakistan "Are you a refugee?" and he replied "No, I'm a Muslim".
Yesterday this one: I asked a man from a non-English speaking African country to spell his name (so that I could help him get a book).  When I couldn't understand his diction I asked him to use the "A for Apple, B for Boy, C for Cat" strategy.  Was going well until he bowled this curly one "G for Dog"!

108.
As I mentioned above, I have not sought to offer a complete diagnosis, but I invite communities to complete and enrich these perspectives on the basis of their awareness of the challenges facing them and their neighbours

It is my hope that, in doing so, they will realize that whenever we attempt to read the signs of the times it is helpful to listen to young people and the elderly. Both represent a source of hope for every people.

The elderly bring with them memory and the wisdom of experience, which warns us not to foolishly repeat our past mistakes. Young people call us to renewed and expansive hope, for they represent new directions for humanity and open us up to the future, lest we cling to a nostalgia for structures and customs which are no longer life-giving in today’s world.

109. Challenges exist to be overcome! Let us be realists, but without losing our joy, our boldness and our hope-filled commitment. Let us not allow ourselves to be robbed of missionary vigour!

107. Many places are experiencing a dearth of vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. This is often due to a lack of contagious apostolic fervour in communities which results in a cooling of enthusiasm and attractiveness.

Wherever there is life, fervour and a desire to bring Christ to others, genuine vocations will arise.

Even in parishes where priests are not particularly committed or joyful, the fraternal life and fervour of the community can awaken in the young a desire to consecrate themselves completely to God and to the preaching of the Gospel.

This is particularly true if such a living community prays insistently for vocations and courageously proposes to its young people the path of special consecration.

On the other hand, despite the scarcity of vocations, today we are increasingly aware of the need for a better process of selecting candidates to the priesthood. Seminaries cannot accept candidates on the basis of any motivation whatsoever, especially if those motivations have to do with affective insecurity or the pursuit of power, human glory or economic well-being.

After the ceremony the inmates were allowed to mix freely with their relatives and friends ....even to give a hug and kiss ....very different from normal visiting with communication on a phone through a window. Once again I had the feeling: women (apart from very dangerous people) should not be in prison. There should be some other arrangement. DV some day soon ....

106. Even if it is not always easy to approach young people, progress has been made in two areas: the awareness that the entire community is called to evangelize and educate the young, and the urgent need for the young to exercise greater leadership.

We should recognize that despite the present crisis of commitment and communal relationships, many young people are making common cause before the problems of our world and are taking up various forms of activism and volunteer work. Some take part in the life of the Church as members of service groups and various missionary initiatives in their own dioceses and in other places.

How beautiful it is to see that young people are “street preachers” (callejeros de la fe), joyfully bringing Jesus to every street, every town square and every corner of the earth!

A Sunday School teacher decided to have her young class memorize one of the most quoted passages in the Bible - Psalm 23. She gave the youngsters a month to learn the chapter.
Little Rick was excited about the task - but he just couldn't remember the Psalm. After much practice, he could barely get past the first line.
On the day that the kids were scheduled to recite Psalm 23 in front of the congregation, Ricky was so nervous. When it was his turn, he stepped up to the microphone and said proudly, 'The Lord is my Shepherd, and that's all I need to know.'
