Man with 4 kg of cocaine arrested at Dar es Salaam Airport

Those being arrested are just mere errand boys, the drug barons are somewhere under dishonest security officials' protection enjoying cool breeze. It's embarrassing to realize how young energetic Tanzanians in the Chinese jails are clamouring for President Kikwete's intervention in securing the Hong Kong prisoners be allowed to serve their remaining jail terms in Tanzania instead of languishing in the foreign jail vide website www.v2catholic.com for the hand written appeal and Kong Kong's administrative authority letter in endeavouring to assist the inmates! These inmates while in Tanzanian prisons could be in handy to act as government witnesses against the actual drug dragons unless the authority doesn't have the guts in confronting the bigwigs since some of the pinpointed ones are either ministers, chief executives or members of parliament as mentioned in their (inmate) hand written letters. We thank the Kong Kong Chaplain for the wonderful assistance He accords to the male and female Tanzania inmates

162. On the other hand this process of response and growth is always preceded by God’s gift, since the Lord first says: “Baptize them in the name…”.

The Father’s free gift which makes us his sons and daughters, and the priority of the gift of his grace, enable that constant sanctification which pleases God and gives him glory.

In this way, we allow ourselves to be transformed in Christ through a life lived “according to the Spirit”

I invited him for a drink at McDonald's, and he eventually joined me, but somewhat reluctantly. Then I realised why he might not have been keen on McDonald's:

161. It would not be right to see this call to growth exclusively or primarily in terms of doctrinal formation. It has to do with “observing” all that the Lord has shown us as the way of responding to his love.

Along with the virtues, this means above all the new commandment, the first and the greatest of the commandments, and the one that best identifies us as Christ’s disciples: “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you”.

Clearly, whenever the New Testament authors want to present the heart of the Christian moral message, they present the essential requirement of love for one’s neighbour: “The one who loves his neighbour has fulfilled the whole law… therefore love of neighbour is the fulfilling of the law”.

These are the words of Saint Paul , for whom the commandment of love not only sums up the law but constitutes its very heart and purpose: “For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, ‘you shall love your neighbour as yourself’”

To his communities Paul presents the Christian life as a journey of growth in love: “May the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all”.

Saint (?) James likewise exhorts Christians to fulfil “the royal law according to the Scripture: You shall love your neighbour as yourself”, in order not to fall short of any commandment.   (re "Saint" James ...see here - scroll down to menu of May 3)

On my last visit to a certain correctional centre, an inmate whose first language is not English asked me to get him a "Chit" phone card. Last Saturday at Chung King Mansion where I was collecting Urdu items for Pakistan inmates, I asked at the shop where I usually buy phone cards for a "Chit" card. Kind man said he did not have "Chit" cards, but would I like a "Chat" card!

160. The Lord’s missionary mandate includes a call to growth in faith: “Teach them to observe all that I have commanded you”. Hence it is clear that that the first proclamation also calls for ongoing formation and maturation.

Evangelization aims at a process of growth which entails taking seriously each person and God’s plan for his or her life. All of us need to grow in Christ. Evangelization should stimulate a desire for this growth, so that each of us can say wholeheartedly: “It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me”

 159. Another feature of a good homily is that it is positive. It is not so much concerned with pointing out what shouldn’t be done, but with suggesting what we can do better.

In any case, if it does draw attention to something negative, it will also attempt to point to a positive and attractive value, lest it remain mired in complaints, laments, criticisms and reproaches.

Positive preaching always offers hope, points to the future, does not leave us trapped in negativity. How good it is when priests, deacons and the laity gather periodically to discover resources which can make preaching more attractive!

A young man, on the way to visit his girlfriend in northern Michigan was caught speeding through one of the small towns just a few miles from his destination. The officer sauntered up to the car as the young man fished for his licence and registration. With the hint of a wry smile across his face, the officer placed both elbows on the window of the car so he could get real close and spoke in a deep voice, “Son, I’ve been waitin’ all day for you.”

“Sorry officer,” the young driver said. “I got here just as fast as I could.”

Two nights ago on our annual Oblate retreat group here in Hong Kong, we watched the movie at right

Whatever reservations one has about the John Paul papacy, one cannot but be moved by the first part of this movie tracing the invasion of Poland by Hitler and then by Stalin

This tragic background helps us to understand what made John Paul II tick

The movie also shows how John Paul II, like John XXIII, had a tremendous friendship for Jewish people

Summary

158. Paul VI said that “the faithful… expect much from preaching, and will greatly benefit from it, provided that it is simple, clear, direct, well-adapted”.

Simplicity has to do with the language we use. It must be one that people understand, lest we risk speaking to a void. Preachers often use words learned during their studies and in specialized settings which are not part of the ordinary language of their hearers. These are words that are suitable in theology or catechesis, but whose meaning is incomprehensible to the majority of Christians.

The greatest risk for a preacher is that he becomes so accustomed to his own language that he thinks that everyone else naturally understands and uses it. If we wish to adapt to people’s language and to reach them with God’s word, we need to share in their lives and pay loving attention to them.

Simplicity and clarity are two different things. Our language may be simple but our preaching not very clear. It can end up being incomprehensible because it is disorganized, lacks logical progression or tries to deal with too many things at one time. We need to ensure, then, that the homily has thematic unity, clear order and correlation between sentences, so that people can follow the preacher easily and grasp his line of argument.

In a car in the middle of Colorado a wife says to her husband, “Oh Dear George, I’m afraid the house is going to burn down, I’m sure I left the iron on.”

George: “The house will not burn down Dear, don’t worry.”

Wife: “Now how can you make a statement like that”

George: “Cause I forgot to turn off the water in the bathtub!”

For the first two nights of our annual Oblate retreat group here in Hong Kong, we watched the movie at right (part one on Monday night, part two Tuesday night ...each part about 90 minutes)

Powerful ...moving...inspiring. Must admit I didn't know about the courage Roncalli showed in protecting Jews against Nazis. Nor did I know about his courageous work in Bulgaria ...not to mention the way he attracted President de Gaulle of France to a function by hiring the best chef in Paris!
Roncalli's role in preventing war at the time of the Cuba crisis is gripping material. The kind but firm way he dealt with opposition from the Curia is a lesson for peace-makers

A great movie. Full of humor right from the opening scene where Roncalli is being measured for his ...coffin!

157. Simply using a few examples, let us recall some practical resources which can enrich our preaching and make it more attractive

One of the most important things is to learn how to use images in preaching, how to appeal to imagery. Sometimes examples are used to clarify a certain point, but these examples usually appeal only to the mind; images, on the other hand, help people better to appreciate and accept the message we wish to communicate.

An attractive image makes the message seem familiar, close to home, practical and related to everyday life. A successful image can make people savour the message, awaken a desire and move the will towards the Gospel. A good homily, an old teacher once told me, should have “an idea, a sentiment, an image.”

From the movie about Pope John XXIII:
Cardinal to Pope in 1959: it's impossible to start the Council in 1963 ...not enough time  (read: we are stalling you).
Pope to cardinal in reply: OK, we'll start in 1962!

Pope: Christians must keep away from vanity, ambition and greed

"There are people in the Church that follow Jesus for vanity or thirst for power and wealth ...

... in the Church there are climbers, people driven by ambition! There are many of them! But if you like climbing, go to the mountains and climb them: it is healthier! Do not come to Church to climb! Jesus scolds people with this kind of ambitious attitude in the Church.

(and some people)  presented themselves as benefactors of the Church and made money on the side…”

Come and eat with me
The Eucharist is there not only for the good times, when everything is fine and we feel right with the world and with the Lord. No, it is there for the times of struggle and pain, when things have gone wrong, when we have made mistakes, when we need the sustenance that is offered to us. That is what makes the current discussion in respect of Marriage, the event of its failure and reception of the sacramental gift so urgent. The Eucharist is there as food for the journey, not as a gift for being good, not as a prize for being well-behaved

Summary

156. Some people think they can be good preachers because they know what ought to be said, but they pay no attention to how it should be said, that is, the concrete way of constructing a sermon.

They complain when people do not listen to or appreciate them, but perhaps they have never taken the trouble to find the proper way of presenting their message.

Let us remember that “the obvious importance of the content of evangelization must not overshadow the importance of its ways and means”. Concern for the way we preach is likewise a profoundly spiritual concern. It entails responding to the love of God by putting all our talents and creativity at the service of the mission which he has given us; at the same time, it shows a fine, active love of neighbour by refusing to offer others a product of poor quality

In the Bible, for example, we can find advice on how to prepare a homily so as to best to reach people: “Speak concisely, say much in few words” (Sir 32:8).

For the past two nights our retreat group has watched a movie about Pope John XXIII (in two parts of 90 minutes each).  I've tried to find it through Google but can find only bits and pieces. Hope to have more info on tomorrow's menu. A powerful movie. Inspiring
