169. In a culture paradoxically suffering from anonymity and at the same time obsessed with the details of other people’s lives, shamelessly given over to morbid curiosity, the Church must look more closely and sympathetically at others whenever necessary

In our world, ordained ministers and other pastoral workers can make present the fragrance of Christ’s closeness and his personal gaze. The Church will have to initiate everyone – priests, religious and laity – into this “art of accompaniment” which teaches us to remove our sandals before the sacred ground of the other.

The pace of this accompaniment must be steady and reassuring, reflecting our closeness and our compassionate gaze which also heals, liberates and encourages growth in the Christian life.

Most interesting Tablet reflection on the role of a Catholic school

Due to population shifts, a Catholic primary school in Blackburn has found itself with 99 per cent of pupils who are Muslim

But in India, say, there are many Catholic-run schools and colleges, often the best in the area, where the great majority are Muslim or Hindu. Parents obviously do not fear their children will be “converted”. They greatly prize whatever it is the Catholic ethos can bring, which may include, apart from the excellence of the education, resistance to the increasing sexual free-for-all that they fear is pervading Indian society.

a Catholic school ought to be regarded as a gift to the local community, not as a walled-off place of privilege for a minority

168. As for the moral component of catechesis, which promotes growth in fidelity to the Gospel way of life, it is helpful to stress again and again the attractiveness and the ideal of a life of wisdom, self-fulfilment and enrichment

In the light of that positive message, our rejection of the evils which endanger that life can be better understood. Rather than experts in dire predictions, dour judges bent on rooting out every threat and deviation, we should appear as joyful messengers of challenging proposals, guardians of the goodness and beauty which shine forth in a life of fidelity to the Gospel.

Yesterday at a detention centre, I asked three recently-arrived drug mules where they got their plane from (...I've been noticing how new Tanzanian mules are using airports in other African countries ...a good sign that security at Tanzania's airports is tightening up).  The first one said "Nairobi". The second "Zanzibar". The third, a very simple person not at all trying to be smart but just quite honest  said "at the airport"

Summary

167. Every form of catechesis would do well to attend to the “way of beauty” (via pulchritudinis). Proclaiming Christ means showing that to believe in and to follow him is not only something right and true, but also something beautiful, capable of filling life with new splendour and profound joy, even in the midst of difficulties. Every expression of true beauty can thus be acknowledged as a path leading to an encounter with the Lord Jesus.

This has nothing to do with fostering an aesthetic relativism which would downplay the inseparable bond between truth, goodness and beauty, but rather a renewed esteem for beauty as a means of touching the human heart and enabling the truth and goodness of the Risen Christ to radiate within it.

If, as Saint Augustine says, we love only that which is beautiful, the incarnate Son, as the revelation of infinite beauty, is supremely lovable and draws us to himself with bonds of love.

So a formation in the via pulchritudinis ought to be part of our effort to pass on the faith. Each particular Church should encourage the use of the arts in evangelization, building on the treasures of the past but also drawing upon the wide variety of contemporary expressions so as to transmit the faith in a new “language of parables”.

We must be bold enough to discover new signs and new symbols, new flesh to embody and communicate the word, and different forms of beauty which are valued in different cultural settings, including those unconventional modes of beauty which may mean little to the evangelizers, yet prove particularly attractive for others.

From article by George Monbiot, above:
The bar chart puts me in mind of the famous quote perhaps mistakenly attributed to Gandhi. When asked by a journalist during a visit to Britain, “What do you think of Western civilization?”, he’s reputed to have replied, “I think it would be a good idea.”

166. Another aspect of catechesis which has developed in recent decades is mystagogic initiation. This basically has to do with two things: a progressive experience of formation involving the entire community and a renewed appreciation of the liturgical signs of Christian initiation.

Many manuals and programmes have not yet taken sufficiently into account the need for a mystagogical renewal, one which would assume very different forms based on each educational community’s discernment

Catechesis is a proclamation of the word and is always centred on that word, yet it also demands a suitable environment and an attractive presentation, the use of eloquent symbols, insertion into a broader growth process and the integration of every dimension of the person within a communal journey of hearing and response.

Summary

165. We must not think that in catechesis the kerygma gives way to a supposedly more “solid” formation. Nothing is more solid, profound, secure, meaningful and wisdom-filled than that initial proclamation

All Christian formation consists of entering more deeply into the kerygma, which is reflected in and constantly illumines, the work of catechesis, thereby enabling us to understand more fully the significance of every subject which the latter treats.  It is the message capable of responding to the desire for the infinite which abides in every human heart

The centrality of the kerygma calls for stressing those elements which are most needed today: it has to express God’s saving love which precedes any moral and religious obligation on our part; it should not impose the truth but appeal to freedom; it should be marked by joy, encouragement, liveliness and a harmonious balance which will not reduce preaching to a few doctrines which are at times more philosophical than evangelical.

All this demands on the part of the evangelizer certain attitudes which foster openness to the message: approachability, readiness for dialogue, patience, a warmth and welcome which is non-judgmental

Getting a chaplain's prison pass in HK is a major feat ...takes six or more months of perseverance. Yesterday I continued a similar venture: to obtain a pass for an immigration detention centre which houses a lot of asylum seekers.  In a phone call yesterday, when told I needed a letter from a bishop (even though I'm authorised by bishop to be a prison chaplain),  I couldn't help saying "if you need a support letter from the Pope I can apply for one".

The story of Roy .... maybe someone can help please:

Late yesterday afternoon as I returned from Hei Ling Chau Drug Treatment Centre, I met a man aged about 30 who had been at HLC a year ago. His name is Roy. Before detention Roy was a fashion designer (clothes & jewelry etc). Upon release, no design job available. So he's been working for a year at an advertising company - this one - arranging advertisements to go on the sides of taxis and other vehicles. But sales are slow and his company is putting people off.

Roy's salary is about HK$8,000 a month, but his rent recently went up to HK$6,500 a month (in a two year contract that has more than a  year to go)  He lives with his partner who is five months pregnant and not working. If they get married they can apply for government housing (costing about HK$1,300 a month), after a wait of a year or so. But only if they get married. Not married they face a wait of many years. But before they can get married, the partner needs a divorce from her ex-husband who has a new partner, has moved to China, and has broken off contact. To sort this out they need a lawyer. But they can't afford a lawyer. I am hoping to find a pro-bono lawyer for them.

Roy said it's ok to put his story on this website, in the hope that someone might be able to help him and his partner find cheaper accommodation (even for one year) ....and someone might be able to help him find a better job. He's not lazy. He's quite hard-working. But like many other people in HK who are being slugged by increased rents he is entering waters of great difficulty. If any kind readers are able to help Roy he can be contacted by phone at (852) 95488804 and email: roybibi@me.com

Jesus, please help Roy!

164. In catechesis too, we have rediscovered the fundamental role of the first announcement or kerygma, which needs to be the centre of all evangelizing activity and all efforts at Church renewal

The kerygma is Trinitarian. The fire of the Spirit is given in the form of tongues and leads us to believe in Jesus Christ who, by his death and resurrection, reveals and communicates to us the Father’s infinite mercy.

On the lips of the catechist the first proclamation must ring out over and over: “Jesus Christ loves you; he gave his life to save you; and now he is living at your side every day to enlighten, strengthen and free you.”

This first proclamation is called “first” not because it exists at the beginning and can then be forgotten or replaced by other more important things. It is first in a qualitative sense because it is the principal proclamation, the one which we must hear again and again in different ways, the one which we must announce one way or another throughout the process of catechesis, at every level and moment.

For this reason too, “the priest – like every other member of the Church – ought to grow in awareness that he himself is continually in need of being evangelized”

is said to be a lucky day because Matthias was chosen by lot to replace Judas Iscariot. It has therefore been seen as a good day for buying lottery tickets etc !

Bible Readings for Mass of St Matthias

Matthias must have been disappointed when he was not chosen in the original 12 apostles. But he didn't go away in a huff. He kept on following Jesus, eventually taking Judas' place

Tell me about it!

We need a lot more of that love and less of the charge that heresy lurks round the corner. A life in faith is, in the end, about courageous risk-taking and trust in the goodness of the Lord. That was what Thomas showed in his words of gratitude
“You are my Lord and my God”

Summary

163. Education and catechesis are at the service of this growth. We already possess a number of magisterial documents and aids on catechesis issued by the Holy See and by various episcopates.

I think in particular of the Apostolic Exhortation Catechesi Tradendae (1979), the General Catechetical Directory (1997) and other documents whose contents need not be repeated here. I would like to offer a few brief considerations which I believe to be of particular significance.

((Interesting: no mention of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which tried to reverse much of the teaching of Vatican II - c.f. CCC = V2 ?))
