Gaza Again (America)
Not for the first time, Israel seems a state out of control, led by leaders out of their minds.

Why should Israel negotiate when it has the United States sending it billions of dollars every year to buy weapons and build settlements and blocking efforts in the United Nations to hold Israel accountable for its actions?

Israel has been using the peace process as a fig leaf while it further colonizes Palestinian land.

If you can find any mention of the number of Palestinian deaths in The Jerusalem Post, please email me: jdwomi@gmail.com.
If the JP will not mention the Palestinian death figure, what does that say about Israeli censorship?

Readings for Feast of Saint Martha

1 John  4:

My dear people, let us love one another since love comes from God, and everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God.

Anyone who fails to love can never have known God, because God is love.

God’s love for us was revealed when God sent into the world his only Son so that we could have life through him;

this is the love I mean: not our love for God, but God’s love for us when he sent his Son to be the sacrifice that takes our sins away.

My dear people, since God has loved us so much, we too should love one another.

God is love and anyone who lives in love lives in God, and God lives in him.

Psalm 33:

I will bless the Lord at all times,
his praise always on my lips; in the Lord my soul shall make its boast.  The humble shall hear and be glad.

Glorify the Lord with me. Together let us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me;  from all my terrors he set me free.

Look towards him and be radiant;  let your faces not be abashed.
This poor man called, the Lord heard him,  and rescued him from all his distress.

The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere him, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is good.

He is happy who seeks refuge in him. Revere the Lord, you his saints. They lack nothing, those who revere him.

Strong lions suffer want and go hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no blessing.

            Luke 10:

Jesus came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house.

She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord’s feet and listened to him speaking.

Now Martha who was distracted with all the serving said, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself? Please tell her to help me.’

But the Lord answered: ‘Martha, Martha,’ he said ‘you worry and fret about so many things, and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part; it is not to be taken from her.’

John 11:

Many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to sympathise with them over their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus had come she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in the house.

Martha said to Jesus, ‘If you had been here, my brother would not have died, but I know that, even now, whatever you ask of God, he will grant you.’

‘Your brother’ said Jesus to her ‘will rise again.’ Martha said, ‘I know he will rise again at the resurrection on the last day.’

Jesus said: ‘I am the resurrection and the life. If anyone believes in me, even though he dies he will live, and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.

Do you believe this?’ ‘Yes, Lord,’ she said ‘I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come into this world.’

234. An innate tension also exists between globalization and localization.

We need to pay attention to the global so as to avoid narrowness and banality. Yet we also need to look to the local, which keeps our feet on the ground.

Together, the two prevent us from falling into one of two extremes. In the first, people get caught up in an abstract, globalized universe, falling into step behind everyone else, admiring the glitter of other people’s world, gaping and applauding at all the right times.

At the other extreme, they turn into a museum of local folklore, a world apart, doomed to doing the same things over and over, and incapable of being challenged by novelty or appreciating the beauty which God bestows beyond their borders.

"My thoughts go especially to the children, from whom we take away the hope for a decent life: dead children, injured children, maimed children, orphaned children, children who have war relics for toys, children who do not know how to smile." (report)

2 Kings 1:

Ahaziah, king of Israel, was seriously ill after a fall. He tried to send messengers to the temple of a false god to ask about his future.

But the Lord sent Elijah the prophet to intercept the messengers
and tell them that the king would die.

The king sent 50 soldiers to arrest Elijah but as they approached Elijah, fire from heaven destroyed them.

The king sent another 50 soldiers.
They too were destroyed by fire from heaven.

A third group of 50 was sent. They begged Elijah to spare them. The Lord told Elijah to go with them to the king.

Elijah then told the king to his face that he would soon die because he had tried to ask a false god about his future. Not long after this, Ahaziah died.

Psalm 125:

Those who put their trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, that cannot be shaken.

Jerusalem, the mountains surround her, so the Lord surrounds his people, now and forever.

Lord,  please increase my trust in you....and help me be more aware of your protecting presence

Acts 2:

The crowd was deeply moved by Peter's words, and asked "What should we do?"   Peter replied "You must repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then you too will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit". That day about 3,000 people were baptized

These remained faithful to the teaching of the apostles, to a life of sharing and caring, to the Breaking of Bread, and to prayer

Many miracles were worked by the apostles, and this made a deep impression on everyone. Each day the Lord added new members to their group

Jesus, please help me remain faithful to the Christian way of life

Matthew 14:

Once after Jesus had been healing and teaching many people all afternoon,  his disciples said to him "It's getting late and the people need to go and eat".

Jesus replied "They don't need to go. You feed them". The disciples replied "We have only 5 loaves and 2 fish".

Jesus got the people to sit on the grass. There were about 20,000 of them. Then he blessed the loaves and fish.

He handed the loaves and fish to his disciples. His disciples gave them to the crowd.

Everyone had plenty to eat.
They even had 12 baskets of leftovers.

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

233: Realities are greater than ideas. This principle has to do with incarnation of the word and its being put into practice: “By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is from God”.

The principle of reality, of a word already made flesh and constantly striving to take flesh anew, is essential to evangelization. It helps us to see that the Church’s history is a history of salvation, to be mindful of those saints who inculturated the Gospel in the life of our peoples and to reap the fruits of the Church’s rich bimillennial tradition, without pretending to come up with a system of thought detached from this treasury, as if we wanted to reinvent the Gospel

At the same time, this principle impels us to put the word into practice, to perform works of justice and charity which make that word fruitful.

Not to put the word into practice, not to make it reality, is to build on sand, to remain in the realm of pure ideas and to end up in a lifeless and unfruitful self-centredness and gnosticism.

For 17th Sunday of the Year

I Kings 3:

The Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream and said, ‘Ask what you would like me to give you.’ Solomon replied, ‘O Lord my God, give your servant a heart to understand how to discern between good and evil

It pleased the Lord that Solomon should have asked for this. ‘Since you have not asked for long life for yourself or riches, but have asked for a discerning judgement, here and now I give you a heart wise and shrewd’

Psalm 118:

My part, I have resolved, O Lord, is to obey your word. The law from your mouth means more to me than silver and gold.

Let your love be ready to console me by your promise to your servant. Let your love come and I shall live for your law is my delight.

That is why I love your commands more than finest gold, why I rule  my life by your precepts, and hate false ways.

Your will is wonderful indeed; therefore I obey it. The unfolding of your word gives light and teaches the simple.

Romans 8:

We know that by turning everything to their good, God co-operates with all those who love him, with all those he has called according to his purpose.

They are the ones he chose specially long ago and intended to become true images of his Son, so that his Son might be the eldest of many brothers and sisters

He called those he intended for this; those he called he justified, and with those he justified he shared his glory.

Reflection by Daniel Daring:

The Treasure
Finding the kingdom of heaven brings joy. It opens for us new possibilities and new life.

Matthew 13:

Jesus said to the crowds, ‘The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field which someone has found; he hides it again, goes off happy, sells everything he owns and buys the field.

‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls; when he finds one of great value he goes and sells everything he owns and buys it.’

I first saw Guinea worm in a small village in Ghana, where about 350 of the 500 residents had worms coming out of their bodies. ....I noticed a lovely young woman on the edge of the crowd, holding a baby in her right arm ...and I went over to ask her the name of her child. But there was no baby; instead she was holding her right breast, which was almost a foot long and had a worm emerging from the nipple. Later I learned that a total of 12 worms emerged from different parts of her body.
We had a wealthy man with us, and he paid for a well to be dug and a pump installed, so within a few weeks the (contaminated) pond was abandoned as a water source for the people. They have never had another case of Guinea worm in their village.

From Jimmy Carter's book, above, Page 76:
Some of the people had never seen a picture or photograph before, and this would occasionally cause problems. One group of Peace Corps volunteers in a remove area of Niger made some drawings, showing women standing in a knee-deep pond. When the villagers first saw the cartoon, a chorus of voices cried "I'd rather have Guinea worm than no feet!"

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

232:  Ideas – conceptual elaborations – are at the service of communication, understanding, and praxis.

Ideas disconnected from realities give rise to ineffectual forms of idealism and nominalism, capable at most of classifying and defining, but certainly not calling to action.

What calls us to action are realities illuminated by reason. Formal nominalism has to give way to harmonious objectivity. Otherwise, the truth is manipulated, cosmetics take the place of real care for our bodies.

We have politicians – and even religious leaders – who wonder why people do not understand and follow them, since their proposals are so clear and logical. Perhaps it is because they are stuck in the realm of pure ideas and end up reducing politics or faith to rhetoric. Others have left simplicity behind and have imported a rationality foreign to most people.

Bishop of Bangladesh: Stop Israeli attacks on Gaza, a humanitarian tragedy

"Israel has always condemned Hitler for the Holocaust and the ethnic cleansing of Jews in Germany during the Second World War - says Msgr. Rozario - but what they are doing now against the Palestinians is much more serious and gravely inhuman.

Palestinian people have the right to exist with human dignity and can never be targeted against for the misdeeds done by a small group of terrorists.

International communities, especially the powerful ones, must restrain Israel from barbarism and acts against humanity. At the same time we also call on Hamas to stop inciting Israel for such heinous and inhuman acts".

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

Realities are more important than ideas

231: There also exists a constant tension between ideas and realities. Realities simply are, whereas ideas are worked out. There has to be continuous dialogue between the two, lest ideas become detached from realities.

It is dangerous to dwell in the realm of words alone, of images and rhetoric. So a third principle comes into play: realities are greater than ideas

This calls for rejecting the various means of masking reality: angelic forms of purity, dictatorships of relativism, empty rhetoric, objectives more ideal than real, brands of ahistorical fundamentalism, ethical systems bereft of kindness, intellectual discourse bereft of wisdom.

2 Cor 4:

We are only the earthenware jars that hold this treasure, to make it clear that such an overwhelming power comes from God and not from us.

We are in difficulties on all sides, but never cornered; we see no answer to our problems, but never despair; we have been persecuted, but never deserted; knocked down, but never killed;

always, wherever we may be, we carry with us in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus, too, may always be seen in our body.

Psalm 125:

When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage,   it seemed like a dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, on our lips there were songs.

The heathens themselves said: ‘What marvels the Lord worked for them!’ What marvels the Lord worked for us! Indeed we were glad.

Deliver us, O Lord, from our bondage  as streams in dry land. Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap.

They go out, they go out, full of tears,  carrying seed for the sowing: they come back, they come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves.

Matthew 20:

The mother of Zebedee’s sons came with her sons to make a request of Jesus and bowed low; and he said to her, ‘What is it you want?’

She said to him, ‘Promise that these two sons of mine may sit one at your right hand and the other at your left in your kingdom.’

‘You do not know what you are asking’ Jesus answered. ‘Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?’ They replied, ‘We can.’ ‘Very well,’ he said ‘you shall drink my cup, but as for seats at my right hand and my left, these are not mine to grant; they belong to those to whom they have been allotted by my Father.’

When the ten others heard this they were indignant with the two brothers. But Jesus called them to him and said, ‘You know that among the pagans the rulers lord it over them, and their great men make their authority felt. This is not to happen among you
No; anyone who wants to be great among you must be your servant, and anyone who wants to be first among you must be your slave, just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’

230:  The message of peace is not about a negotiated settlement but rather the conviction that the unity brought by the Spirit can harmonize every diversity

It overcomes every conflict by creating a new and promising synthesis.

Diversity is a beautiful thing when it can constantly enter into a process of reconciliation and seal a sort of cultural covenant resulting in a “reconciled diversity”.

As the bishops of the Congo have put it: “Our ethnic diversity is our wealth… It is only in unity, through conversion of hearts and reconciliation, that we will be able to help our country to develop on all levels”

Last night I again used my Visa card to help Gaza - this time through Oxfam which has a brave team in Gaza

And as I keep praying for a just peace in Gaza, I continue to ask the Lord to temporarily incapacitate Prime Minister Netanyahu. For me he is the driving force behind the heartless stupidity that has claimed so many Palestinian and Jewish lives

Please join me in praying for one part of the world each day of the week:

I Kings 22:

Some false prophets encouraged the king of Israel and the king of Judah to go to war.

Micah, a true prophet of the Lord,
warned the kings
not to go to war.

The men of Israel and Judah were defeated in the war. Ahab, the king of Israel, died in the war.

Dear Lord, please protect leaders from "hawkish" advisers!

Psalm 124:

Indeed all too full is our soul with the scorn of the rich, with the proud man's disdain.

"If the Lord had not been on our side", this is Israel's song.

If the Lord had not been on our side when people rose against us, then would they have swallowed us alive when they were angry with us.

Blessed be the Lord who did not let us become a prey for their teeth.

Our life, like a bird, has escaped
from the snare of the hunter. Indeed the snare has been broken
and we have
escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth.

Thank you God for helping us escape: from sorrow, guilt, anxiety, sickness ... and from death

Acts 2:

Peter said to the crowd "You know that Jesus of Nazareth was a man from God. You know all about the miracles he worked

This same Jesus has been raised from the dead by God. There are many witnesses to his resurrection

Jesus has been taken up to God's right hand. He has received the Holy Spirit from the Father. He has poured out the Holy Spirit on us

Know for sure that Jesus whom you crucified is the Messiah and he is Lord"

Jesus, Messiah Lord, please pour your Holy Spirit into my heart

Matthew 14:

Not long after Jesus began traveling and teaching, King Herod arrested John the Baptist and put him in prison.

This was because John had told Herod he was breaking the Law
by living with Herodias,  his brother's wife.

During a birthday party for Herod,
the daughter of Herodias danced. Her dancing so pleased Herod
that he said he would give her anything she wanted.

Herodias told her to ask for the head of John the Baptist on a dish.
Herod then had John beheaded.

John's disciples came and buried the body.

Jesus, please give the world good leaders, and protect people from bad leaders like Herod

Do you hear the people sing? - note the words of auxiliary bishop-elect Joseph Ha O.F.M.
He added that although the day may come when tanks may roll and soldiers may demand the people’s silence, on this day they could rally in peace. He encouraged people to make the most of the peaceful rally ... not all will be called to be martyrs if the day of violence ever comes. He expressed the hope that the day when guns are pointed at the people will never come and that the government will hear the people sing as they raise their voices in peace   (he's talking about Hong Kong!)

Why is Pope Francis spending so much time going after the Mafia?

Representing Israeli frustration at external criticism of its operation in Gaza, Israel's ambassador to the US, Ron Dermer, controversially suggested Israel should be awarded the Nobel peace prize for "fighting with unimaginable restraint". He told a meeting of Christians United For Israel in Washington: "Some are shamelessly accusing Israel of genocide and would put us in the dock for war crimes. But the truth is that the Israel Defence Forces should be given… a Nobel Peace Prize for fighting with unimaginable restraint."

On the 15th day of fighting, the death toll in Gaza topped 600 with more than 3,700 injured.  (In this Guardian report)

From A Call to Action: Women, Religion, Violence and Power
by former US president Jimmy Carter:

Page 62:
The Carter Center has monitored elections in Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Libya, Tunisia, Indonesia, Palestine and Sudan, and we have assisted in preparation for elections in Bangladesh. In all these countries, as well as in Algeria, Iraq, Oman, Kuwait, morocco, Syria, Mauritania, Yemen and a number of others where Sharia law has a major influence, women and men have equal voting rights. There is no religious impediment to equal political rights for women ordained in the Koran.

Page 63: Saudi Arabia is a special case when dealing with the issue of gender equality. Saudi women have never been granted voting rights ...

Page 63: ...in 2002, Crown Prince (now King) Abdullah proposed an offer of peace with Israel based on recognition of the pre-1967 border between Israel and Palestine, which was supported by all Arab leaders and subsequently for the 56 Islamic nations (including Iran)

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

229: This principle, drawn from the Gospel, reminds us that Christ has made all things one in himself: heaven and earth, God and man, time and eternity, flesh and spirit, person and society.  The sign of this unity and reconciliation of all things in him is peace. Christ “is our peace” (Eph 2:14 ).

The Gospel message always begins with a greeting of peace, and peace at all times crowns and confirms the relations between the disciples.

Peace is possible because the Lord has overcome the world and its constant conflict “by making peace through the blood of his cross”

But if we look more closely at these biblical texts, we find that the locus of this reconciliation of differences is within ourselves, in our own lives, ever threatened as they are by fragmentation and breakdown.  If hearts are shattered in thousands of pieces, it is not easy to create authentic peace in society.

Letter from Gaza by a Norwegian doctor
And as I write these words to you, alone, on a bed, my tears flow, the warm but useless tears of pain and grief, of anger and fear. This is not happening! And then, just now, the orchestra of the Israeli war-machine starts its gruesome symphony again, just now: salvos of artillery from the navy boats just down on the shores, the roaring F16, the sickening drones, and the cluttering Apaches. So much made in and paid by the US.  Mr. Obama - do you have a heart? I invite you - spend one night - just one night - with us in Shifa. Disguised as a cleaner, maybe. I am convinced, 100%, it would change history.

This report says how ten Israeli human rights organisations have written to the attorney general to raise concerns about grave violations of international law in the conflict. Same report also has these lines:
On Monday, 25 members of the Abu Jame' family were killed when Israeli forces struck a house near Khan Younis, apparently without warning, the Israeli human rights organisation B'Tselem said. A Hamas militant was also killed.
The dead included 18 children and five women, three of whom were pregnant. The family was eating iftar, the meal that breaks the Ramadan fast

I Kings 20-21:

King Ahab wanted the vineyard of Naboth, but Naboth refused to sell his ancestral inheritance.

Ahab's wife Jezebel then had Naboth murdered and Ahab took the vineyard.

The prophet Elijah  confronted Ahab for his crime. Ahab then repented of his crime.

Dear God, please help us respect other people's property

Psalm 123: Let's pray this psalm on behalf of the people of Gaza ....the words apply to them!

To you have I lifted up my eyes,
you who dwell in the heavens.

My eyes, like the eyes of slaves
on the hand of their lords.

Like the eyes of a servant on the hand of her mistress, so our eyes are on the Lord our God till he show us mercy.

Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy. We are filled with contempt.

Indeed all too full is our soul with the scorn of the rich, with the proud man's disdain.

Lord, please help the people of Gaza!

Acts 2:

When  people heard the apostles' group speaking in many different languages, some said the apostles were drunk

Peter stood up with the Eleven and said to the crowd: These people are not drunk. It's only 9am....too early to drink. What is happening is what God said through the prophet Joel:

'I, the Lord, will pour out my spirit on all peoples. They will prophesy and see visions. I will pour out my spirit on everyone'

Come Holy Spirit, fall afresh on all peoples, all nations

Matthew 13:

One day Jesus went to Nazareth, his home town. In the prayer hall there he taught the local people.

But the local people would not accept him.  They said "Where did he get such  wisdom and miraculous power? He is just a carpenter's son. His mother is that woman called Mary.

His brothers are James, Joseph, Simon and Jude. His sisters are here, too.  He's nobody special."

Jesus said to them "A prophet is despised only in his own country and his own house.".

And he did not work many miracles there because of their lack of faith.

Jesus, please give me more faith in you, and don't let me reject people

The news gradually filtered through last Thursday of the loss of MH17, blown apart in the sky, high over Eastern Ukraine , carrying 298 people. There were no survivors. "A sound legal system and a clean business environment are the ultimate solutions to corruption"
 - China's ambassador to Tanzania.
He said the Chinese government exercised zero-tolerance on corruption.  (in this report)

c.f.r. this Wikipedia article:  Corruption in China ..which is why one HK newspaper editorial recently quoted an historian as saying that the present Communist Party government is the most corrupt government in the long history of China ....which is why to say it exercises "zero-tolerance" on corruption is a (small?) exaggeration. And for a country where the rule of law is a farce, to tell another country to have a sound legal system ...is "a bit rich"

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

229: In this way it becomes possible to build communion amid disagreement, but this can only be achieved by those great persons who are willing to go beyond the surface of the conflict and to see others in their deepest dignity.

This requires acknowledging a principle indispensable to the building of friendship in society: namely, that unity is greater than conflict.

Solidarity, in its deepest and most challenging sense, thus becomes a way of making history in a life setting where conflicts, tensions and oppositions can achieve a diversified and life-giving unity

This is not to opt for a kind of syncretism, or for the absorption of one into the other, but rather for a resolution which takes place on a higher plane and preserves what is valid and useful on both sides.

At the time of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, Oblate Superior General Fr Wilhelm Steckling wrote Longing for Peace, a reflection encouraging people to do two things re the war:
1. Stay informed
2. Pray
