US media finally acknowledges Gazans' plight
Israel may fear results as for first time, jolted by social media, mainstream channels reveal true conditions in Gaza

UN says illegal Gaza blockade must be lifted

When will we get it? Palestinians are fighting for their freedom

China's Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, has urged Israel to end military operations in Gaza and lift its blockade of the Palestinian enclave. (This is what is needed: many calls to lift the blockade which is the basic cause for the conflict)

Gaza is not as I expected. Amid the terror, there is hope
Egypt holds the key to Gaza's economic integration to the rest of the global economy. Open the Rafah crossing, and the need for the tunnels disappears. To the world this forlorn, impoverished and totally battered society has become a byword for impossibility and despair. But nobody has told Gazans.

The United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, has described a missile strike close to a UN-run school in Gaza as "a moral outrage and a criminal act".

Outrage after third Israeli strike on a United Nations school in Gaza Note the same words from the US after each school attack: the US state department called on Israel to do "more to meet its own standards and avoid civilian casualties". This is the problem: Israel's standards are a farce.

In one strike early on Sunday morning, 10 members of the al'Ghoul family died when their house down a narrow alley was obliterated. The dead included a new-born, six children under eight and three adults. They were sleeping (in this report)

2 Kings 14-18

After the death of Elisha, kings continued to come to power
and be assassinated in Judah and Israel.

It was then that the king of Assyria invaded Israel and Judah.

Hezekiah, king of Judah, a good man, prayed to God for help.

Dear God, please stop nations from invading other nations!

Psalm 133:

How good and how pleasant it is
when people live in unity.

It is like precious oil upon the head, running down upon the beard.

It is like the dew of Hermon
which falls on the heights of Zion.

For there the Lord gives his blessing, life for ever.

Dear Lord, please help all the peoples of the world to live as one family, in unity

Acts 4:

When Peter and John were released, they went to a gathering of apostles and friends and told them everything that had happened

The group then prayed "Master, it is you who made heaven and earth and sea. Please protect us from leaders who threaten us. Help us to proclaim your message with great boldness. Bless us to heal and work miracles through the name of your holy servant Jesus"

As they prayed, the building rocked. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to proclaim the word of God boldly

Jesus, by the grace of your Holy Spirit, please help me to proclaim your message boldly

Matthew 15:

Jesus went up into the hills near the Lake of Galilee. Large crowds came to him bringing  the lame, the crippled, the blind, the dumb and many others.

These they put down at Jesus' feet.
Jesus healed them all.

The crowds praised the God of Israel when they saw the dumb speaking, cripples whole again,
the lame walking and the blind able to see.

Jesus, please give sick people more faith in your healing love

Church appeal over HK political reform

The Norfolk Island solution

This website's statistics for July.  God bless the kind readers who check this little site each day.
May this site be an encouragement to keep up with what's happening in the Church and in the world,

From A Call to Action: Women, Religion, Violence and Power
by former US president Jimmy Carter:

Page 116:
Efforts in India, China and South Kkorea to outlaw gendercide or the use of sonograms for the same purpose have been predictably unsuccessful. ....Unnatural Selection: Choosing Boys over Girls, and the Consequences of a World Full of Men .. estimates that there are now at least 160 million missing females. This is equivalent to an entire generation of girls being wiped from the face of the earth. To put this into perspective, it is estimated that 500,000 Tutsis were killed in the Rwanda genocide of 1994, and that 6 million Jews were victims of the Nazi Holocaust

It appears that more than twice as many girls have been killed by their parents during my lifetime as the total number of combatants and civilians lost in World War II

One unanticipated result has been a disturbing shortage of brides and a demand for prostitutes to assuage the desires of men without partners. News reports from South Korea indicate that imported brides from less affluent Asian nations are selling for a high price.  .....12% of all marriages of South Korean men are with foreign women from Vietnam, Cambodia, the Philippines and Japan.

...the only apparent solution is to convince parents that a daughter can, in all respects, be an asset to the family. This can be accomplished only by ensuring that girls are educated and given equal opportunities to develop their talents, to earn income, and to serve their family and community

241: In her dialogue with the State and with society, the Church does not have solutions for every particular issue.

Together with the various sectors of society, she supports those programs which best respond to the dignity of each person and the common good.

In doing this, she proposes in a clear way the fundamental values of human life and convictions which can then find expression in political activity.

2 Kings 6:

The king of Aram was at war with Israel. But each time he planned an attack, Elisha warned the king of Israel and the attack was foiled.

The king of Aram therefore sent soldiers to capture Elisha. Elisha prayed to God for help and the soldiers were temporarily blinded.

While they were blinded, Elisha led them to the king of Israel. The king of Israel asked Elisha "Shall I kill them?"

Elisha told him not to kill them but to feed them and let them go.

After this there was peace for a time between Aram and Israel.

Dear God, please help me be kind to people who are unkind to me

    Psalm 130:

Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice.

If you, O Lord, should  record our guilt, Lord, who would survive?

But with you is found forgiveness.
For this we revere you.

My soul is waiting for the Lord.
I count on his word.

My soul is longing for the Lord
more than watchman for the daybreak.

With the Lord there is mercy
and fullness of redemption.

Israel indeed he will redeem
from all its  iniquity

Lord, please forgive me for all the bad things I have done

Acts 4:

The religious leaders were astonished that two uneducated men like Peter and John could speak so confidently. The leaders also realized that a miracle had taken place: the crippled man was standing next to  Peter and John

The leaders gave Peter and John a formal legal warning not to speak in future about Jesus

Peter and John replied "Which is right? To obey you, or obey God? We cannot stop proclaiming what we have seen and heard"

The leaders released the two apostles. They were afraid to punish them since all the people were giving glory to God for the miracle that had happened

Jesus, please help me obey you always

Matthew 15:

Jesus went to the coastal district near Tyre and Sidon. A foreign woman followed him and shouted
"Sir, Son of David, have pity on me. My daughter is tormented by an evil spirit."

At first Jesus did not answer her, so his disciples said to him "Help her, because she keeps shouting after us."

Jesus replied "I was sent only to the people of Israel". The foreign woman by now was kneeling at Jesus' feet. "Lord, help me" she pleaded.

Jesus said to her "Woman, you have great faith. Your wish is granted".  At that very moment, her daughter was healed.

Jesus, please give sick people great faith in you

Has the Anglican Church done a Great Service for the RC Church?

We live in a time of "sadly missed ministerial opportunity" in the RC Church,
for believing that Christ would not call women, and therefore, denying women such a vocation.
It is not only a "missed ministerial opportunity", but it is also a "missed evangelical moment".

The PBS News Hour reports that in some areas of India there are only 650 girl babies living for every 1,000 boys, a ration of 100 to 154. Infanticide, either at the time of giving birth or later, seems to be the cause.

..... When these percentages are multiplied by the total number of children born in some of the world's largest nations (..India, China..) the number of girls that have been eliminated by abortion, neglect or murder is horrendous.

.....Shadowline Films produced a documentary entitled "It's a Girl" that had its Hong Kong premiere in Novemeber 2013. One episode presents a mother in India who states calmly that she has strangled eight of her newborn daughters. This selective murder of girls is called female gendercide or femicide

Readings for "18th Sunday"

Isaiah 55:

Thus says the Lord: Oh, come to the water all you who are thirsty; though you have no money, come! Buy corn without money, and eat, and, at no cost, wine and milk.

Why spend money on what is not bread, your wages on what fails to satisfy?

Listen, listen to me, and you will have good things to eat and rich food to enjoy.

Pay attention, come to me; listen, and your soul will live. With you I will make an everlasting covenant out of the favours promised to David.

Prayer Before Meals:

Unseen Guest at every meal,
you who multiplied
loaves and fish,
may our hearts your presence feel,
as we pray you bless each dish

Psalm 144:

The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love.

How good is the Lord to all,
compassionate to all his creatures.

The eyes of all creatures look to you and you give them their food each day.

You open wide your hand, grant the desires of all who live

The Lord is just in all his ways,
and loving in all his deeds.

The Lord is close to all who call him, who call on him from their hearts.

O Lord your hand feeds us. You answer all our needs

Romans 8:

Nothing can come between us and the love of Christ, even if we are troubled or worried, or being persecuted, or lacking food or clothes, or being threatened or even attacked.

These are the trials through which we triumph, by the power of him who loved us.

For I am certain of this: neither death nor life, no angel, no prince, nothing that exists, nothing still to come, not any power, or height or depth, nor any created thing, can ever come between us and the love of God made visible in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Reflection by Daniel Daring:
Compassion leads to Eucharist

Share what you have, Jesus tells us, because our resources shared with the needy save life

Chinese text: 怜悯通往圣体圣事

Matthew 14

When Jesus received the news of John the Baptist’s death he withdrew by boat to a lonely place where he and his disciples could be by themselves. But the people heard of this and, leaving the towns, went after him on foot. So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them and healed their sick.

When evening came, the disciples went to him and said, ‘This is a lonely place, and the time has slipped by; so send the people away, and they can go to the villages to buy themselves some food.’

Jesus replied, ‘There is no need for them to go: give them something to eat yourselves.’ But they answered ‘All we have with us is five loaves and two fish.’ ‘Bring them here to me’ he said. He gave orders that the people were to sit down on the grass; then he took the five loaves and the two fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing. And breaking the loaves handed them to his disciples who gave them to the crowds.

They all ate as much as they wanted, and they collected the scraps remaining; twelve baskets full. Those who ate numbered about five thousand men, to say nothing of women and children

Because of the situation in Gaza, Iraq, Syria, Africa, Ukraine ..... nothing to smile about today... a time of sadness

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

239:  The Church proclaims “the Gospel of peace”  and she wishes to cooperate with all national and international authorities in safeguarding this immense universal good.

By preaching Jesus Christ, who is himself peace, the new evangelization calls on every baptized person to be a peacemaker and a credible witness to a reconciled life.

In a culture which privileges dialogue as a form of encounter, it is time to devise a means for building consensus and agreement while seeking the goal of a just, responsive and inclusive society.

The principal author, the historic subject of this process, is the people as a whole and their culture, and not a single class, minority, group or elite.

We do not need plans drawn up by a few for the few, or an enlightened or outspoken minority which claims to speak for everyone. It is about agreeing to live together, a social and cultural pact.

2 Kings 5:

Naaman was an army commander for the king of Aram. Naaman enjoyed success and favor, but he was a leper.

He heard about Elisha and the king sent him to Elisha with  gifts of gold, silver and garments to request healing.

When Naaman reached Elisha's house, Elisha sent him a message: "Bathe 7 times in the Jordan River."

At first Naaman was angry at this message, having expected Elisha to see and heal him personally.

But then he humbly bathed 7 times in the Jordan and his flesh became clean once more.

Elisha declined Naaman's gifts.
But after Naaman left Elisha, Elisha's servant Gehazi caught up with Naaman and deceitfully obtained some silver.

Elisha confronted Gehazi about this
and Gehazi became a leper.

Lord, please heal all lepers

Indeed thus shall be blessed the people who love and honor the Lord.

Matthew 15:

Some religious leaders asked Jesus "Why do your disciples ignore many external practices of our religion?"

Jesus answered, with the words of the prophet Isaiah: "This people honors me with external lip-service,

Jesus also said "It's not certain foods or lack of washing  that make a person unclean. It's evil in the heart that makes a person unclean.

Evil intentions like murder, adultery, fornication, theft, perjury, slander. These are the things that make a person unclean."

Jesus, please clean my heart

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

Social dialogue as a contribution to peace IV.

238:    Evangelization also involves the path of dialogue. For the Church today, three areas of dialogue stand out where she needs to be present in order to promote full human development and to pursue the common good:

dialogue with states, dialogue with society – including dialogue with cultures and the sciences – and dialogue with other believers who are not part of the Catholic Church.

In each case, “the Church speaks from the light which faith offers”, contributing her two thousand year experience and keeping ever in mind the life and sufferings of human beings. This light transcends human reason, yet it can also prove meaningful and enriching to those who are not believers and it stimulates reason to broaden its perspectives.

August this year has 5 Fridays,
 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays.
This happens only once every 823 years. The Chinese call it 'Silver pockets full."

Today is the anniversary (1834) of the first Protestant missionary to China, Robert Morrison,
"the Protestant Matteo Ricci".
I had the privilege of visiting his grave in Macau in 2008 - fourth row of photos at this link.  A marvelous book: Robert Morrison and the Birth of Chinese Protestantism
Morrison arrived in China in 1807, produced the first Protestant Chinese Bible and laid the foundation for the Chinese Protestant Church.

And .... Birthday today:
St Eugene de Mazenod (1782)  and the PLA of China (1927)

(..re ultra-Orthodox Jews in Israel imposing excessive standards of dress etc on women)

As with Christians and Muslims, Jews have come to realise that the basic rights of women are strongly affected by how men choose to interpret and apply the meaning of Holy Scripture. When our mothers, wives, sisters and daughters are considered both different and inferior in the eyes of the God we worship, this belief tends to permeate society and everyone suffers

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

237:  To Christians, this principle ("the whole is greater than the part") also evokes the totality or integrity of the Gospel which the Church passes down to us and sends us forth to proclaim.

Its fullness and richness embrace scholars and workers, businessmen and artists, in a word, everyone. The genius of each people receives in its own way the entire Gospel and embodies it in expressions of prayer, fraternity, justice, struggle and celebration.

The good news is the joy of the Father who desires that none of his little ones be lost, the joy of the Good Shepherd who finds the lost sheep and brings it back to the flock

The Gospel is the leaven which causes the dough to rise and the city on the hill whose light illumines all peoples. The Gospel has an intrinsic principle of totality: it will always remain good news until it has been proclaimed to all people, until it has healed and strengthened every aspect of humanity, until it has brought all men and women together at table in God’s kingdom. The whole is greater than the part.

Another UN school hit in further night of fierce bombardment
Pierre Krahenbuhl, commissioner-general of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, condemned “in in the strongest possible terms this serious violation of international law by Israeli forces”.

He said in a statement: “Last night, children were killed as they slept next to their parents on the floor of a classroom in a UN-designated shelter in Gaza. Children killed in their sleep; this is an affront to all of us, a source of universal shame. Today the world stands disgraced"

Readings for Feast of St Ignatius

I Cor 10:

Whatever you eat, whatever you drink, whatever you do at all, do it for the glory of God.

 Never do anything offensive to anyone – to Jews or Greeks or to the Church of God;

just as I try to be helpful to everyone at all times, not anxious for my own advantage but for the advantage of everybody else, so that they may be saved. Take me for your model, as I take Christ

Words in green became the motto of the Jesuits, founded by Ignatius

Psalm 33:

I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise always on my lips; in the Lord my soul shall make its boast.  The humble shall hear and be glad.

Glorify the Lord with me. Together let us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me;  from all my terrors he set me free.

Look towards him and be radiant;  let your faces not be abashed. This poor man called, the Lord heard him,  and rescued him from all his distress.

The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere him, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is good.

He is happy who seeks refuge in him. Revere the Lord, you his saints. They lack nothing, those who revere him.

Luke 14:

Great crowds accompanied Jesus on his way and he turned and spoke to them. ‘If anyone comes to me without seeing me as on a different plane of importance to their father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes and their own life too, they cannot be my disciples.

Anyone who does not carry their cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.

You cannot be my disciple unless you give up all your possessions.’

Jesus, please help me understand that I put you first in my life, my love for my family increases, not decreases

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

236:  Here our model is not the sphere, which is no greater than its parts, where every point is equidistant from the centre, and there are no differences between them. Instead, it is the polyhedron (!), which reflects the convergence of all its parts, each of which preserves its distinctiveness.

Pastoral and political activity alike seek to gather in this polyhedron the best of each. There is a place for the poor and their culture, their aspirations and their potential. Even people who can be considered dubious on account of their errors have something to offer which must not be overlooked.

It is the convergence of peoples who, within the universal order, maintain their own individuality; it is the sum total of persons within a society which pursues the common good, which truly has a place for everyone.

As I stood for 6 hours yesterday as an effort to do something for Gaza, I had many special experiences:
* a group of 3 very friendly young Israelis joined me for a sharing of our hopes.
* A lady introduced her 19 year old daughter with the words "you baptised her 19 years ago".
* Of the many people who stopped for a chat, quite a few said the Middle East is too big a mess to solve.
* As I watched thousands of people walk past, including so many families (it's school holiday time here) I couldn't help thinking: in order to preserve our own freedom, we need to help other people preserve theirs.

2 Kings 2-3:

The Lord revealed to Elisha and other prophets that Elijah would be taken up to heaven in a whirlwind.

Elisha said to Elijah "Let me inherit a double share of your spirit."

Then a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind.

The spirit of Elijah then came to rest on Elisha and he began to do miracles by the power of the Lord.

Holy Spirit of God, fall afresh on our world

Psalm 126:

When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage, it seemed like a dream.

Then was our mouth filled with laughter, on our lips there were songs.

What marvels the Lord worked for us. Indeed we were glad.

Those who are sowing in tears
will sing when they reap.

They go out, full of tears, carrying seed for the sowing. They come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves.

Dear God, please free us from all bondage

      Acts 3:

One afternoon about 3pm, Peter and John went to the Temple for prayer. A beggar asked them for money. He was crippled from birth.

Peter said to him "I don't have any silver or gold. But I do have something to give you: in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!"

Peter then took him by the hand and helped him to stand up. Immediately, his feet and ankles became firm and he could walk.

He was so happy he started jumping around. He went into the Temple, praising God

Jesus, there are so many crippled people in the world. Please heal them

Matthew 14:

After feeding the crowd with 5 loaves and 2 fish, Jesus told his disciples to go by boat across the nearby lake.

Jesus stayed to send the crowds away. Then he went up into the hills to pray.

When darkness came, the boat was far from land, but it was battling large waves caused by a strong head-wind.

Jesus then walked on the water towards the boat. He called out to his disciples "Courage. It is I. Don't be afraid."

Peter answered "Lord, if it is you, tell me to walk on the water to you."  Jesus said "Come".

Peter then started walking on the water, but he became afraid and began to sink.

"Lord, save me" he called out.
Jesus took him by the hand and helped him to keep walking on the water.

"Man of little faith, why did you doubt?" asked Jesus. As they got into the boat, the wind stopped.

The men in the boat bowed to Jesus and said "You really are the Son of God".

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

235:  The whole is greater than the part, but it is also greater than the sum of its parts.

There is no need, then, to be overly obsessed with limited and particular questions. We constantly have to broaden our horizons and see the greater good which will benefit us all.

But this has to be done without evasion or uprooting. We need to sink our roots deeper into the fertile soil and history of our native place, which is a gift of God. We can work on a small scale, in our own neighbourhood, but with a larger perspective.

Nor do people who wholeheartedly enter into the life of a community need to lose their individualism or hide their identity; instead, they receive new impulses to personal growth. The global need not stifle, nor the particular prove barren.
