The Observer view on Gaza and Israel's international reputation

It is clear that more and more people across the world – justifiably or not – are asking why western governments may assert a moral and legal right to mount air strikes in defence of embattled women and children dying in the mountains of northern Iraq, but should simultaneously ignore the plight of those buried under rubble in Gaza.

With Israel's latest, often indiscriminate bombing of Gaza, that question gets harder and harder to answer.

Relations are strained over Gaza but US support for Israel remains strong
"You have these forums where a girl in the Gaza strip who's 16 years old can tweet images of bombs falling outside of her house to 160,000 people. That kind of access to disseminating information has never existed before and it's a game changer. That changes public opinion and ultimately that will change the way policymakers act on this issue but that's a way down the road."

Ezra 2-3:

About 50,000 Jews returned to Israel after 70 years of exile in Babylon.

Psalm 138:

I thank you, Lord, with all my heart. You have heard the words of my mouth.

With the angels I will bless you.
I will adore you in your holy temple.

I thank you for your faithfulness and love which are far above what we can understand.

On the day I called you answered.
You increased the strength of my soul.

All earth's kings shall thank you
when they hear the words of your mouth.

They shall sing of the Lord's ways: "How great is the glory of the Lord!"

Though I walk in the midst of affliction you give me life and frustrate my foes.

Your love, O Lord, is eternal.
Do not abandon us whom you have made.

Lord, help us more clearly understand how much you love us and help us. May every day of the year be a Thanksgiving Day

Acts 5:

One religious leader at the meeting, Gamaliel, asked that the apostles be removed from the room. Then he spoke to the other leaders:

"Men of Israel, be careful how you deal with these people. If this movement of theirs is of human origin, it will die out of its own accord. But if it comes from God, you will not be able to destroy it. You might even find yourselves fighting against God"

His advice was accepted. The apostles were warned, flogged and released

They left the meeting glad to have had the honor of suffering humiliation for the sake of Jesus. They resumed their daily preaching, in the Temple and in private homes

Jesus, thank you for times of suffering for you

Matthew 18:

Peter asked Jesus "How many times must I forgive someone? 7 times?"  Jesus answered "Not 7, but 77 times.

For the kingdom of heaven is like a king who cancelled the huge debt of one of his servants.

But that same servant refused to cancel the tiny debt of one of his fellow servants.

So the king said to the servant:
'When you appealed to me, I had pity on you and cancelled your big debt.  But you refused to have pity on your fellow servant who asked you for mercy. Therefore you must now go to prison until your big debt is paid.'

If you refuse to forgive other people, you are making yourself ineligible for God's forgiveness."

Jesus, please help me to forgive other people, just as you forgive me....many times each day

247Relations with Judaism

We hold the Jewish people in special regard because their covenant with God has never been revoked, for “the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable”.

The Church, which shares with Jews an important part of the sacred Scriptures, looks upon the people of the covenant and their faith as one of the sacred roots of her own Christian identity

As Christians, we cannot consider Judaism as a foreign religion; nor do we include the Jews among those called to turn from idols and to serve the true God. With them, we believe in the one God who acts in history, and with them we accept his revealed word.

After the Jewish people had been in Babylon about 70 years, the Lord moved the heart of the king of Persia to free the Jews.

The king also told the Jews to re-build their temple in Jerusalem.

Psalm 137:

By the rivers of
Babylon we sat and cried, remembering Zion.
On the poplars that grew there we hung up our harps.

For it was there that they asked us, our captors, for songs. "Sing to us", they said, "one of Zion's songs".

O how could we sing the song of the Lord on alien soil? If I forget you, Jerusalem, let my right hand wither.

O let my tongue cleave to my mouth if I remember you not, Jerusalem , above all my joys.

Lord, please help  people who have been exiled from their homeland

Acts 5:

Then a man arrived at the meeting with the news "At this very moment, the men you imprisoned are now in the Temple preaching to the people"

The police again arrested the apostles and brought them to the meeting

When the main religious leader reminded them of his previous warning not to preach, Peter and the apostles replied "Obedience to God comes before obedience to men. God  raised Jesus up to be the Savior. We are witnesses to this, we and the Holy Spirit whom God gives to those who obey him"

This made the leaders so angry that they wanted to kill the apostles

Jesus, please help me put obedience to you before all other obediences

Matthew 18:

One day Jesus heard his disciples arguing  about which one of them was the most important.

Jesus got a little child to sit in front of them, and said  "If you want to be great in God's eyes, become child-like. In fact, unless you become child-like, you won't get to heaven.

And make sure you never cause harm to children like this one.
Remember, the protecting angels of children are in the presence of my Father in heaven."

Jesus, please help me to be more child-like, and please don't let me ever cause harm to children

How many important things unite us! If we really believe in the abundantly free working of the Holy Spirit, we can learn so much from one another!

It is not just about being better informed about others, but rather about reaping what the Spirit has sown in them, which is also meant to be a gift for us.

To give but one example, in the dialogue with our Orthodox brothers and sisters, we Catholics have the opportunity to learn more about the meaning of episcopal collegiality and their experience of synodality. Through an exchange of gifts, the Spirit can lead us ever more fully into truth and goodness.

For "19th Sunday of the Year"

1 Kings 19:

When Elijah reached the mountain of the Lord, he went into a cave and spent the night in it. Then he was told, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord.’ Then the Lord himself went by.

There came a mighty wind, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind came an earthquake. But the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire. But the Lord was not in the fire.

And after the fire there came the sound of a gentle breeze. And when Elijah heard this, he covered his face with his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.

Lord, may things great and small,
-flowers, birds, rain, stars - remind us of your love

I will hear what the Lord God has to say,  a voice that speaks of peace. His help is near for those who love  him,  and his glory will dwell in our land.

Mercy and faithfulness have met; justice and peace have embraced. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth,  and justice look down from heaven.

The Lord will make us prosper, and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall march before him, and peace shall follow his steps.

Let us see, O Lord, your mercy, and give us your saving help.

Romans 9:

What I want to say now is no pretence; I say it in union with Christ – it is the truth – my conscience in union with the Holy Spirit assures me of it too.

What I want to say is this: my sorrow is so great, my mental anguish so endless, I would willingly be condemned and be cut off from Christ if it could help my brothers of Israel, my own flesh and blood.

They were adopted as sons, they were given the glory and the covenants; the Law and the ritual were drawn up for them, and the promises were made to them.

They are descended from the patriarchs and from their flesh and blood came Christ who is above all, God for ever blessed! Amen.

Jesus, may your beloved Jewish people know and love you

Matthew 14:

Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he would send the crowds away. After sending the crowds away he went up into the hills by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, while the boat, by now far out on the lake, was battling with a heavy sea, for there was a head-wind.

In the fourth watch of the night he went towards them, walking on the lake, and when the disciples saw him walking on the lake they were terrified. ‘It is a ghost’ they said, and cried out in fear.

But at once Jesus called out to them, saying, ‘Courage! It is I! Do not be afraid.’

It was Peter who answered. ‘Lord,’ he said ‘if it is you, tell me to come to you across the water.’ ‘Come’ said Jesus.

Then Peter got out of the boat and started walking towards Jesus across the water, but as soon as he felt the force of the wind, he took fright and began to sink. ‘Lord! Save me!’ he cried. Jesus put out his hand at once and held him. ‘Man of little faith,’ he said ‘why did you doubt?’

And as they got into the boat the wind dropped. The men in the boat bowed down before him and said, ‘Truly, you are the Son of God.’

Pope Francis also challenges Catholics to see this preferential option for the poor as one mainly of “privileged and preferential religious care,” for he writes that “the worst discrimination which the poor suffer is the lack of spiritual care.” To walk with those who are poor, and accompany them both spiritually and materially, is integral to Christian discipleship.

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

246Given the seriousness of the counter-witness of division among Christians, particularly in Asia and Africa , the search for paths to unity becomes all the more urgent.

Missionaries on those continents often mention the criticisms, complaints and ridicule to which the scandal of divided Christians gives rise.

If we concentrate on the convictions we share, and if we keep in mind the principle of the hierarchy of truths, we will be able to progress decidedly towards common expressions of proclamation, service and witness.

The immense numbers of people who have not received the Gospel of Jesus Christ cannot leave us indifferent.

Consequently, commitment to a unity which helps them to accept Jesus Christ can no longer be a matter of mere diplomacy or forced compliance, but rather an indispensable path to evangelization

I was pleased to see HK's Cardinal Zen leave the sanctuary a few years ago to give the sign of peace to the leadership group of a congregation of sisters celebrating a big anniversary.
And yesterday morning, at a Mass for a man who committed suicide, I left the sanctuary to give the sign of peace to his grieving family.

praise him, servants of the Lord.

Praise the Lord for he is good.
Sing a psalm to his name for he is loving.

I know the Lord is great. He does whatever he wills in heaven, on earth, in the seas.

Pagan idols are silver and gold,
the work of human hands. They have mouths but they cannot speak. They have eyes but they cannot see.

Sons of Israel, do not trust in useless idols. Sons of Aaron, trust only in our Creator and Lord.

Dear Lord, please help all peoples to know and love you

Acts 5:

All the believers used to meet regularly in an area of the Temple. Their numbers kept on increasing

So many miracles kept happening that sick people were laid on beds on the street,  in the hope that at least Peter's shadow would cover them as he walked past

People came from the towns near Jerusalem, bringing their sick,
and all of the sick were healed

Jesus, please may there be more healings in our day

Matthew 16:

Jesus now began explaining to his disciples how he must go to Jerusalem to suffer, die and rise from the dead.

He also said  "If you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself,
take up your own cross, and follow me.

Selfishness will ruin your life.
Self-sacrificing will bless your life.

What use is it to have everything in this world yet miss out on Heaven?"

Jesus, please help me find my life by losing it in service of others

Today's menu has an article about the Jesuits ....and today is feast of St Dominic, the founder of the Dominicans.
So today's smile has to be this one:

What is similar about the Jesuit and Dominican Orders?   Well, they were both founded by Spaniards, St. Dominic for the Dominicans, and St. Ignatius of Loyola for the Jesuits.  They were also both founded to combat "heresy": the Dominicans to fight the Albigensians, and the Jesuits to fight the Protestants.

What is different about the Jesuit and Dominican Orders?  Well, have you met any Albigensians lately?

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

244.  Commitment to ecumenism responds to the prayer of the Lord Jesus that “they may all be one”. The credibility of the Christian message would be much greater if Christians could overcome their divisions and the Church could realize “the fullness of catholicity proper to her in those of her children who, though joined to her by baptism, are yet separated from full communion with her”.

We must never forget that we are pilgrims journeying alongside one another. This means that we must have sincere trust in our fellow pilgrims, putting aside all suspicion or mistrust, and turn our gaze to what we are all seeking: the radiant peace of God’s face.

Trusting others is an art, and peace is an art. Jesus told us: “Blessed are the peacemakers”. In taking up this task, also among ourselves, we fulfil the ancient prophecy: “They shall beat their swords into ploughshares”.

Modern slavery generates approximately $32 billion in profits each year, about half of which goes to rich industrialized nations such as our own. The Global Slavery Index listed the US as currently having almost 60,000 people in bondage....

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

243. The Church has no wish to hold back the marvellous progress of science.
On the contrary, she rejoices and even delights in acknowledging the enormous potential that God has given to the human mind.

Whenever the sciences – rigorously focused on their specific field of inquiry – arrive at a conclusion which reason cannot refute, faith does not contradict it.

Neither can believers claim that a scientific opinion which is attractive but not sufficiently verified has the same weight as a dogma of faith.

At times some scientists have exceeded the limits of their scientific competence by making certain statements or claims. But here the problem is not with reason itself, but with the promotion of a particular ideology which blocks the path to authentic, serene and productive dialogue.

Feast of the Transfiguration

Daniel 7:

As I watched, thrones were set in place, and one of great age took his seat.

His robe was white as snow, the hair of his head as pure as wool. His throne was a blaze of flames, its wheels were a burning fire.

A thousand thousand waited on him, ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.

And I saw, coming on the clouds of heaven, one like a son of man. He came to the one of great age and was led into his presence.

On him was conferred sovereignty, glory and kingship, and men of all peoples, nations and languages became his servants.

His sovereignty is an eternal sovereignty which shall never pass away, nor will his empire ever be destroyed.

Psalm 96:

The Lord is king, let earth rejoice, let all the coastlands be glad. Cloud and darkness are his raiment; his throne, justice and right.

The mountains melt like wax before the Lord of all the earth. The skies proclaim his justice; all peoples see his glory.

For you indeed are the Lord, most high above all the earth, exalted far above all spirits.

A beautiful song about the Transfiguration: We Behold

 Peter 1:

It was not any cleverly invented myths that we were repeating when we brought you the knowledge of the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ; we had seen his majesty for ourselves.

He was honoured and glorified by God the Father, when the Sublime Glory itself spoke to him and said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour.’ We heard this ourselves, spoken from heaven, when we were with him on the holy mountain.

So we have confirmation of what was said in prophecies; and you will be right to depend on prophecy and take it as a lamp for lighting a way through the dark until the dawn comes and the morning star rises in your minds.

Matthew 17:

Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain where they could be alone.

There in their presence he was transfigured: his face shone like the sun and his clothes became as white as the light.

Suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared to them; they were talking with him. Then Peter spoke to Jesus. ‘Lord,’ he said ‘it is wonderful for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.’

He was still speaking when suddenly a bright cloud covered them with shadow, and from the cloud there came a voice which said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour. Listen to him.’

When they heard this the disciples fell on their faces overcome with fear. But Jesus came up and touched them. ‘Stand up,’ he said ‘do not be afraid.’ And when they raised their eyes they saw no one but only Jesus.

A beautiful reflection for today's Feast of the Transfiguration:
Peter, James and John

Richard Rohr argues in his recent book “Falling Upward” that the consequences of the first part of our lives are only realised in the experience of the later years, that those years are, in a significant manner, a completion and an understanding of earlier times. He writes:  “The language of the first half of life and the language of the second half of life are almost two different vocabularies, known only to those who have been in both of them”.

...in India, rape cases have doubled between 1990 and 2008

Page 121: The Congo has become known as the "world capital of rape" ....There is a remarkable incidence of rape in the region of southern Africa....

Page 123: In Myanmar I met with leaders of religious groups who are Roman Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, Hindu and Buddhist.....When I asked them about the status of women, almost all responded that within their religious group "women are treated as equals - but considered to be either separate or different". This reminded me of my childhood days, when black people were legally considered "separate but equal". They were kept largely separate and certainly not treated as equals

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

Dialogue between faith, reason and science

242. Dialogue between science and faith also belongs to the work of evangelization at the service of peace.

Whereas positivism and scientism “refuse to admit the validity of forms of knowledge other than those of the positive sciences”, the Church proposes another path, which calls for a synthesis between the responsible use of methods proper to the empirical sciences and other areas of knowledge such as philosophy, theology, as well as faith itself, which elevates us to the mystery transcending nature and human intelligence.

Faith is not fearful of reason; on the contrary, it seeks and trusts reason, since “the light of reason and the light of faith both come from God and cannot contradict each other.

Evangelization is attentive to scientific advances and wishes to shed on them the light of faith and the natural law so that they will remain respectful of the centrality and supreme value of the human person at every stage of life

All of society can be enriched thanks to this dialogue, which opens up new horizons for thought and expands the possibilities of reason. This too is a path of harmony and peace.
