Anyone notice lack of coverage in other countries?  Anyone think of a reason?

Four readings

Nehemiah 1-4:

Nehemiah was cupbearer for the king of Persia. He heard how the Jews who had returned to Jerusalem from Babylon were facing many difficulties.

Nehemiah received permission from the king to go to Jerusalem and help rebuild the city.

Nehemiah then supervised the re-building of Jerusalem's wall,
even though some foreigners in Jerusalem made fun of him.

When the workers were ridiculed by foreigners, Nehemiah said to the workers: "Do not be afraid of them. Just keep your mind on the Lord."

Dear God, please help us to do what is right, even if we meet  ridicule and opposition

Psalm 146:

My soul, give praise to the Lord.
I will praise the Lord all my days.

Put no trust in princes, in mortal men in whom there is no help. Take their breath, they return to clay and their plans that day come to nothing.

They are happy who are helped by Jacob's God, who alone made heaven and earth, the seas and all they contain.

It is he who gives bread to the hungry, the Lord, who sets prisoners free. It is the Lord who gives sight to the blind, who raises up those who are bowed down.

It is the Lord who protects the stranger, and upholds the widow and orphan. It is the Lord who loves the just, but thwarts the path of the wicked.

God, we trust in you

Acts 8:

The believers who escaped from Jerusalem went from place to place spreading the Good News

One of these believers was Philip.
He preached about Jesus in a Samaritan town

The Samaritans welcomed Philip's message because of the miracles he worked

Unclean spirits came out of many possessed people, and a number of handicapped people were cured

Such miracles caused great rejoicing in that town

Jesus, let there be more miracles in our day, especially the healing of handicapped people

Matthew 19:

On behalf of all the disciples, Peter asked Jesus "What about us?  We have left everything to follow you."

Jesus replied "You will be leaders in the church on earth.

Anyone who has left home, family or country for the sake of my name, will receive a 100-fold blessing in this life, and will also receive eternal life in Heaven."

Jesus, please bless all Gospel workers

New film addresses taboo subject: China's Great Famine
Mao's 'Great Leap Forward'  blamed for starvation of tens of millions

From A Call to Action: Women, Religion, Violence and Power
by former US president Jimmy Carter:

Page 164:
One of the subjects that I cover (in lectures at Emory University) is human rights, often involving gender discrimination, and a "trick" question I ask is "when did women gain the right to vote in the US?"

Hands shoot up and someone always offers the standard reply: "With the passage of the 19th Amendment .. in 1920".

I point out that this amendment applied only to white women, and that it was with the Voting Rights Act of 1965 under President Lyndon Johnson that all black women gained this privilege. This makes the point that racial, religious and gender discrimination are often interrelated

From a reader in Australia
- thank you!

A man suffered a serious heart attack and had open heart bypass surgery. He awoke to find himself in the care of nuns at a Catholic hospital. As he was recovering, a nun came in to ask how he was going to pay for services. He was asked if he had health insurance.

”No health insurance,” he replied weakly.

The nun asked if he had money in the bank. He replied, “No money in the bank.” The nun then asked, “Do you have a relative who could help you?”

He said, “I have only a spinster sister, and she’s a nun.”

The nun got a little perturbed and announced loudly. “Nuns are not spinsters! Nuns are married to God,”

“Yes, that’s right!” said the patient, perking up. “Send the bill to my brother-in-law.”

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

254Non-Christians, by God’s gracious initiative, when they are faithful to their own consciences, can live “justified by the grace of God”, and thus be “associated to the paschal mystery of Jesus Christ”.

But due to the sacramental dimension of sanctifying grace, God’s working in them tends to produce signs and rites, sacred expressions which in turn bring others to a communitarian experience of journeying towards God.

While these lack the meaning and efficacy of the sacraments instituted by Christ, they can be channels which the Holy Spirit raises up in order to liberate non-Christians from atheistic immanentism or from purely individual religious experiences.

The same Spirit everywhere brings forth various forms of practical wisdom which help people to bear suffering and to live in greater peace and harmony.

As Christians, we can also benefit from these treasures built up over many centuries, which can help us better to live our own beliefs.

I will give you glory, O God my king. I will bless your name day after day.

The Lord is great, worthy of all praise. His greatness cannot be measured.

Age to age shall proclaim your works, shall speak of your splendor and glory.

The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love.

How good is the Lord to all,
compassionate to all his creatures.

All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord, and tell all the world of your love.

The Lord is faithful in all his words and loving in all his deeds.

Acts 7-8:

Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked up and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at God's right hand

"I can see heaven thrown open", he said, "and Jesus standing at the right hand of God"

At this, the religious leaders at the meeting covered their ears with their hands. They sent Stephen out of the city and stoned him. The false witnesses (who were required to throw the first stones) put down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Paul

As they were stoning him, Stephen prayed "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit". Then he knelt down and prayed "Lord, do not hold this sin against them". Then he died. Paul entirely approved of the killing

That day a bitter persecution started against the church in Jerusalem, and everyone except the apostles fled to the countryside

Paul  began working for the destruction of the church. He went from house to house arresting men and women and sending them to prison

A young man asked Jesus
"Master, what do I have to do to get to Heaven?"

Jesus replied "Keep the commandments: do not kill;  do not commit adultery; honor your father and mother; care for others as much as you care about yourself".

The young man said "I have kept all these commandments. What else do I need to do?"

Jesus said "If you want to do something really special with your life, go and sell all your possessions, give the money to the poor, then come and follow me as one of my disciples".

When the young man heard these words he went away sad, because he was very rich.

Jesus then said to his disciples
"It is hard for a rich person to get to Heaven".

Jesus,  don't let riches endanger my eternal life

There are proven disadvantages for child brides concerning their health, education, safety, and loss of the basic human right of making decisions about their own lives.

Young brides under 15 are five times more likely to die in childbirth than women in their twenties, and when a woman is under 18, her baby is 60% more likely to die in its first year of life than a baby born to a woman just two years older.

Few child brides are permitted to remain in school, which deprives them of the ability to support themselves or a family. In addition, they are more likely to suffer domestic violence and sexual abuse. All these statistics are derived from ....UN agencies. This mistreatment contravenes both the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

253 In order to sustain dialogue with Islam, suitable training is essential for all involved, not only so that they can be solidly and joyfully grounded in their own identity, but so that they can also acknowledge the values of others, appreciate the concerns underlying their demands and shed light on shared beliefs.

We Christians should embrace with affection and respect Muslim immigrants to our countries in the same way that we hope and ask to be received and respected in countries of Islamic tradition.

I ask and I humbly entreat those countries to grant Christians freedom to worship and to practice their faith, in light of the freedom which followers of Islam enjoy in Western countries!

Faced with disconcerting episodes of violent fundamentalism, our respect for true followers of Islam should lead us to avoid hateful generalisations, for authentic Islam and the proper reading of the Koran are opposed to every form of violence.

Wealthy Korea needs a jolt from Pope Francis

Excellent RTHK report on Korea

The Pope denounced the growing gap between the haves and have nots, urging people in affluent societies to listen to "the cry of the poor" among them.

The history of Christianity in Korea is unique in that it was not founded by Western missionaries. Korean intellectuals in the late 18th century heard about it through literature that had arrived in the country from China and developed their own community

Matthew 15:

Jesus went to the coastal district near Tyre. A non-Jewish woman followed him and shouted "Sir, Son of David, have pity on me. My daughter is tormented by an evil spirit."

At first Jesus did not answer her, so his disciples said to him "Help her, because she keeps shouting after us."

Jesus replied "I was sent only to the people of Israel". The foreign woman by now was kneeling at Jesus' feet. "Lord, help me" she pleaded.

Jesus said to her "Woman, you have great faith. Your wish is granted".  At that very moment, her daughter was healed.

Jesus, please give sick people great faith in you

The Crass and the Noble Sides of Journalism

This is a turbulent and exciting time in journalism. Traditional media organizations are struggling to adapt to the digital era, while new outlets and new forms of storytelling are emerging, many of them quite promising. In the frantic effort to attract large volumes of traffic, however, and to in turn bring in advertisers, websites often turn to all manner of SEO manipulation and sensational, empty-calorie fare.

Another serious and pervasive example of gender abuse is the marriage of young girls, often without their consent and contrary to their best interests. There are an estimated 14 million girls married every year before they reach the age of 18, and 1 in 9 of these are younger than 15. This includes 48% of young brides in South Asia; 42% in Sub-Saharan Africa; 29% in Latin America and the Caribbean; and 18% in the Middle East and North Africa.

Page 127: A traditional practice that has become subject to serious abuse is the payment of a dowry by the bride's family. ....India and other countries have outlawed the practice, but the law is widely ignored ....

In January 2012, the Times of India reported an increase in the killing of brides by greedy husbands and in-alws when they don't receive enough money and jewelry from the bride's parents ....."dowry death" ....In the year 2000,  6,995 dowry deaths were reported ....

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

252Our relationship with the followers of Islam has taken on great importance, since they are now significantly present in many traditionally Christian countries, where they can freely worship and become fully a part of society.

We must never forget that they “profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, who will judge humanity on the last day”.

The sacred writings of Islam have retained some Christian teachings; Jesus and Mary receive profound veneration and it is admirable to see how Muslims both young and old, men and women, make time for daily prayer and faithfully take part in religious services

Many of them also have a deep conviction that their life, in its entirety, is from God and for God. They also acknowledge the need to respond to God with an ethical commitment and with mercy towards those most in need.

One of the most serious and least understood examples of abuse of girls is the removal of all or part of their genitalia. Known as female genital cutting or female circumcision, the operation is usually performed without anesthesia, with a knife or razor blade by women who are known as "cutters".

FGC can result in lifelong health consequences, including chronic infections; severe pain during urination, menstruation, sexual intercourse and childbirth; and psychological trauma. Some girls die from the cutting, usually as a result of bleeding or infection.

The World Health Organization estimates that about 125 million women and girls have undergone FGC

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

251. In this dialogue, ever friendly and sincere, attention must always be paid to the essential bond between dialogue and proclamation, which leads the Church to maintain and intensify her relationship with non-Christians.

A facile syncretism would ultimately be a totalitarian gesture on the part of those who would ignore greater values of which they are not the masters.

True openness involves remaining steadfast in one’s deepest convictions, clear and joyful in one’s own identity, while at the same time being “open to understanding those of the other party” and “knowing that dialogue can enrich each side”

What is not helpful is a diplomatic openness which says “yes” to everything in order to avoid problems, for this would be a way of deceiving others and denying them the good which we have been given to share generously with others.

Evangelization and interreligious dialogue, far from being opposed, mutually support and nourish one another.

Vatican II encourages a healthy love for the mother of Jesus. In our spiritual DNA, there's something about Mary that moves our hearts on August 15. May this reflection be an encouragement to people who might be influenced to doubt the beautiful importance of Mary in God's plan and in our lives

Mary of Guadalupe
Many people see in this picture
the Woman of today's first reading at Mass: dressed in the sun, standing on the moon, crowned with stars

1 Cor 15:

Christ has been raised from the dead, the first-fruits of all who have fallen asleep.

Death came through one man and in the same way the resurrection of the dead has come through one man.

Just as all people die in Adam, so all people will be brought to life in Christ; but all of them in their proper order: Christ as the first-fruits and then, after the coming of Christ, those who belong to him.

After that will come the end, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father, having done away with every sovereignty, authority and power.

For he must be king until he has put all his enemies under his feet and the last of the enemies to be destroyed is death, for everything is to be put under his feet.

John Bucki SJ: Education for justice Assumption reflection

Luke 1:

Mary set out and went as quickly as she could to a town in the hill country of Judah. She went into Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth.

Now as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leapt in her womb and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

She gave a loud cry and said, ‘Of all women you are the most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord? For the moment your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leapt for joy. Yes, blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by the Lord would be fulfilled.’

And Mary said: ‘My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, and my spirit exults in God my saviour; because he has looked upon his lowly handmaid. Yes, from this day forward all generations will call me blessed, for the Almighty has done great things for me"

Although widely condemned in the modern world, the terrdile custom of "honor" kilings is either legal or not presecuted in some countries. ....I remember when, during my first year in the White House, a Saudi couple who were living together were executed publicly; their desire to be married was rejected by her father. A British journalist researched the story and developed it into a film entitled Death of a Princess

(- see this Wikipedia article about the movie.    Also this this YouTube clip)

Page 151: In 2010 the police reported 2,823 honor attacks in the UK. A BBC report estimates that globally, more than 20,000 women are victims of honor killings each year.

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

250.  An attitude of openness in truth and in love must characterize the dialogue with the followers of non-Christian religions, in spite of various obstacles and difficulties, especially forms of fundamentalism on both sides.

Interreligious dialogue is a necessary condition for peace in the world, and so it is a duty for Christians as well as other religious communities.

This dialogue is in first place a conversation about human existence or simply, as the bishops of India have put it, a matter of “being open to them, sharing their joys and sorrows”.

In this way we learn to accept others and their different ways of living, thinking and speaking

We can then join one another in taking up the duty of serving justice and peace, which should become a basic principle of all our exchanges

A dialogue which seeks social peace and justice is in itself, beyond all merely practical considerations, an ethical commitment which brings about a new social situation.

Efforts made in dealing with a specific theme can become a process in which, by mutual listening, both parts can be purified and enriched. These efforts, therefore, can also express love for truth.

One of the seven deacons, Stephen, was filled with grace and power. He began to do many miracles

A group of Jews tried to beat Stephen in a debate. But they could not win, because the Holy Spirit was guiding Stephen in his speech

The group then got some men to falsely accuse Stephen of being disloyal to Moses and to God

The group had Stephen arrested and brought before a meeting of the religious leaders. At the meeting, false witnesses accused Stephen of speaking against Moses and the Law

One day some religious leaders put Jesus to the test by asking him
"Is it against the Law of Moses for a man to divorce his wife?"

Jesus replied "God created male and female, for the two to become united as one body.  What God has united, no one should separate."

The leaders then asked
"But why did Moses allow divorce?"

Jesus replied "Moses allowed divorce because people were so hard of heart.  But divorce was not God's plan.

So I say to you, anyone who walks out on their partner and marries someone else, is guilty of adultery"

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel  Full text   Summary

249God continues to work among the people of the Old Covenant and to bring forth treasures of wisdom which flow from their encounter with his word.

For this reason, the Church also is enriched when she receives the values of Judaism

While it is true that certain Christian beliefs are unacceptable to Judaism, and that the Church cannot refrain from proclaiming Jesus as Lord and Messiah, there exists as well a rich complementarity which allows us to read the texts of the Hebrew Scriptures together and to help one another to mine the riches of God’s word.

We can also share many ethical convictions and a common concern for justice and the development of peoples.

O Lord, you search me and you know me. You know my resting and my rising.

You know exactly what's going on in my life, all my ways are an open book to you.

Before ever a word is on my tongue, You know, O Lord, what I'm going to say.

Your knowledge is beyond my understanding, too high, beyond my reach.

It was you who created my being,
knit me together in my mother's womb.

I thank you for the wonder of my life, for the wonders of all your creation.

Lord, thank you for the gift of life.  Please help me live life as well as I can

Acts 6:

About this time as the number of disciples kept growing, the twelve apostles decided to give other men the job of daily food distribution

The apostles said to the whole group of believers  "It is not right for us to neglect the service of the word. Therefore you should choose seven men of good reputation, filled with the Holy Spirit and with wisdom. We give them the food  distribution job, so that we can devote ourselves to prayer and the service of the word"

The whole assembly approved of this idea. They chose seven men and presented them to the apostles who prayed over them with the laying on of hands

The word of the Lord continued to spread. Even a large number of priests became believers

Jesus, please bless all deacons. Fill them with the courage and wisdom of the first seven deacons

Matthew 20:

The brothers James and John were two of Jesus' disciples. One day their mother (Jesus' aunt) said to Jesus "When you become king, allow my sons to sit at your right and left".

Jesus said to James and John
"Only my Father in heaven can allocate seats on my right and left".

The 10 other disciples were angry at James and John for seeking honor. So Jesus said to them all

"In most places, people in power like to dominate and control others. But this is not to be your way of exercising authority.

You must exercise authority by serving others, not dominating them, just as I came not to be served, but to serve, and to give my life as a ransom for the world".

Jesus, please help me want to help and serve other people, not dominate and control them

Media Concentration: A Crisis of Democracy

In the UK, a free press is seen as one of the hallmarks of a liberal democracy. However, while the press may be seen to act as a check on legislative authority, it too is a source of unaccountable power. Over several decades, the UK media has undergone a process of concentration, putting media power in few hands. The health of our democracy can be measured by a plurality of views, which over time is being gradually eroded.

The FBI reports that while 3,200 servicemen were killed in battle between 2000 and 2006, there were 10,600 domestic homicides in the US; 85% of these victims were women .......half of the female murder victims had earlier sought protection from the police
