Tobit 7

When Tobias and Raphael reached Media, they went to the home of their relative Raguel, father of Sarah.

Tobias asked Raguel for Sarah to be his wife. Raguel told Tobias that Sarah's 7 previous bridegrooms had died on their wedding night.

Tobias repeated his request, and Sarah became his wife. That night everyone prayed for the safety of the couple.

Dear God, please bless everyone being married this month

Psalm 5:

At the start of this day I pray to you, O Lord, my King and my God.  I offer you my prayer and ask for your help.

Through the greatness of your love, I have access to your friendship.  I bow down in reverence and worship.

Lead me, Lord, in the way you want me to go.

It is you, Lord, who bless good people. You surround them with favors, as with a shield.

Lord, I adore you as my Creator

Matthew 25: 31-40

Jesus said to his disciples: When I come in glory at the end of the world, all peoples of all times will be gathered in front of me.

I will separate them, like a shepherd separates sheep from goats. I will place the sheep on my right, the goats on my left.

I will say to those on my right "Come and enter my kingdom. For I was hungry, and you gave me food. I was thirsty, and you gave me drink. I was a stranger, and you made me welcome. I was naked, and you clothed me. I was sick, and you visited me. I was in prison, and you came to see me".

Then those good people on my right will say "Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you? When did we see you thirsty and give you a drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you,
naked and clothe you, sick or in prison, and visit you?"

I will answer "Each time you helped and cared for a poor person, you helped and cared for me".

Recording

Matthew 25: 41-46

Then I will say to those on my left "Go away from me and join Satan and his angels in hell.

For I was hungry, and you never gave me food. I was thirsty, and you never gave me anything to drink. I was a stranger, and you never made me welcome, naked, and you never clothed me, sick and in prison, and you never visited me".

Those on my left will then ask
"Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty, a stranger or naked, sick or in prison, and did not come to your help?"

I will answer "Each time you refused to help and care for a poor person, you refused to help and care for me".

Those on the left will then go to eternal punishment. Those on the right will go to eternal life.

Jesus, please help me do more for poor people. Make me understand that when I help a poor person, I help you

Marriage and the bishops
  -  touché !

You see if my friend, in becoming a bishop now has a "new" wife in this new diocese, that means he abandoned his "old" wife, his previous diocese.  And I would bet my entire retirement savings that if the hotline from the Vatican rang asking him to be bishop over yet another diocese, he'd do it.  I think that's called seeking a "trophy wife."  Yep, yep...that's what it's called allright.

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

265Jesus’ whole life, his way of dealing with the poor, his actions, his integrity, his simple daily acts of generosity, and finally his complete self-giving, is precious and reveals the mystery of his divine life.

Whenever we encounter this anew, we become convinced that it is exactly what others need, even though they may not recognize it: “What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you”

Sometimes we lose our enthusiasm for mission because we forget that the Gospel responds to our deepest needs, since we were created for what the Gospel offers us: friendship with Jesus and love of our brothers and sisters.

Raphael explained that the gall would cure the blindness of his father Tobit, and that the liver and heart would drive away the demon

Acts 12:

About this time, King Herod began persecuting the church. He beheaded the apostle James, brother of John. He arrested Peter during Passover time. He put Peter in prison and planned to have him killed after Passover

Each day Peter was in prison, the believers stormed heaven praying for him. On the night before he was to be put on trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, fastened with chains, with more soldiers at the prison entrance

Suddenly Peter's cell was filled with light, and an angel told him to get up. The chains fell from his hands. The angel led Peter out of the prison, without the guards knowing what was happening

Peter then left for another place. Herod was unable to find him

Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky and all peoples will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds with power and glory.

He will send his angels with a loud trumpet to gather good people from all parts of the earth.

Therefore you should live a good life, and you will have nothing to fear on your last day."

Who Knew I’d Be Broken-hearted!

Alas, it is 2014, and my elation, has fizzled. Oh yes, there is the presence of hope and joy with Pope Francis, but, with the polarization of the Church into pre-Vatican II and post-Vatican II spirituality and theology, it is so very sad and frustrating

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

264The best incentive for sharing the Gospel comes from contemplating it with love, lingering over its pages and reading it with the heart.

If we approach it in this way, its beauty will amaze and constantly excite us.

But if this is to come about, we need to recover a contemplative spirit which can help us to realize ever anew that we have been entrusted with a treasure which makes us more human and helps us to lead a new life.

(Than this treasure) There is nothing more precious which we can give to others.

John W  mini-Blog:

Recently I skimmed through The Hebrew Bible today - An Introduction to Critical Issues, and one theme that struck me was "the power struggle between the centre and the fringes ....as has happened historically in China:  the centre (2014 read Beijing) trying to keep/assert its authority over the provinces (to which power has often gone at times, especially when the central government was weak/corrupt)

And as has happened in the Catholic Church: the historical power struggle between the papacy and nations/groups.  John Paul II and Benedict XVI did their best to take back shared responsibility offered by Vatican II

The above book shows how this issue has been around a long time: many parts of the Bible were written by people (usually Jerusalem priests) "in the centre" trying to keep control of Judaism - even to the extent of writing parts of the Bible in a way that supports their vision of worship  (e.g. "close down everywhere else ...all worship has to take place only in Jerusalem"!)

Readings for "Sunday 22"

Jeremiah 20:

One of the Temple priests had Jeremiah beaten and put in stocks for a day near the Temple.

Again Jeremiah prayed to God:
"You have seduced me, Lord.
You have told me to proclaim a harsh message for the people.

This has made me a laughing- stock. Being your messenger has caused me insult  all the day long.

At one stage I even thought of not speaking your message any more.
But then I felt a fire burning in my heart.

I could not stop thinking of you.
I just had to speak your message."

Lord,  please give me more courage to speak your message to my family, friends and people I meet

O God, you are my God, for you I long; for you my soul is thirsting.

My body pines for you like a dry, weary land without water.

So I gaze on you in the sanctuary to see your strength and your glory.

For your love is better than life,
my lips will speak your praise.

So I will bless you all my life, in your name I will lift up my hands.

My soul shall be filled as with a banquet, my mouth shall praise you with joy.

For you have been my help; in the shadow of your wings I rejoice.

Lord, my soul clings to you;
your right hand holds me fast.

Take up the Cross
We love to influence people in their decision-making. We do it in a form of advice or opposition. We mean well. We want to help. We want to see others ‘happy and successful’ in this life. We have in mind “human things”.

Matthew 16:

Jesus now began explaining to his disciples how he must go to Jerusalem to suffer, die and rise from the dead.

He also said "If you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself,
take up your own cross, and follow me.

Selfishness will ruin your life.
Self-sacrificing will bless your life.

What use is it to have everything in this world yet miss out on Heaven?"

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

Personal encounter with the saving love of Jesus

264: The primary reason for evangelizing is the love of Jesus which we have received, the experience of salvation which urges us to ever greater love of him.

What kind of love would not feel the need to speak of the beloved, to point him out, to make him known?

If we do not feel an intense desire to share this love, we need to pray insistently that he will once more touch our hearts. We need to implore his grace daily, asking him to open our cold hearts and shake up our lukewarm and superficial existence.

Over the past five years as a prison chaplain at Lai Chi Kok detention centre, a special joy I've experienced a few times each year has been when I've been able to help bail out an inmate. Not many joys are greater than helping someone get out of prison!
Yesterday was another such case. An Indian inmate, an asylum seeker, arrested not long ago, no friends able/willing to help him, due to stay in prison until a court date towards end of October, needing only HK$200 to be free.  He's now free  DG!
In fact, believe it or not, just after I typed "DG" the phone went. It was him, saying thank you ...using the phone of a local former inmate who does jobs for me, like taking bail money to a court, getting release paper, taking release paper to detention centre, giving released inmate a few dollars for transport/meal

Not long after Jesus began traveling and teaching, King Herod arrested John the Baptist and put him in prison.

This was because John had told Herod he was breaking the Law
by living with Herodias, his brother's wife.

During a birthday party for Herod, the daughter of Herodias danced.

Her dancing so pleased Herod
that he said he would give her anything she wanted.

Herodias told her to ask for the head of John the Baptist on a dish. Herod then had John beheaded.

Imelda Marcos and the seduction of time
As the world marks the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearance on August 30, new generations of Filipinos find it hard to grasp what it meant to express dissent when Ferdinand Marcos was president. Some assert that, compared to the current standard of governance and politics, life must have been better under Marcos. Such perceptions are validated when trusted institutions invite Imelda Marcos as guest of honour.

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

263. We do well to keep in mind the early Christians and our many brothers and sisters throughout history who were filled with joy, unflagging courage and zeal in proclaiming the Gospel.

Some people nowadays console themselves by saying that things are not as easy as they used to be, yet we know that the Roman empire was not conducive to the Gospel message, the struggle for justice, or the defence of human dignity.

Every period of history is marked by the presence of human weakness, self-absorption, complacency and selfishness, to say nothing of the concupiscence which preys upon us all. These things are ever present under one guise or another; they are due to our human limits rather than particular situationsLet us not say, then, that things are harder today; they are simply different.

But let us learn also from the saints who have gone before us, who confronted the difficulties of their own day. So I propose that we pause to rediscover some of the reasons which can help us to imitate them today.

From A Call to Action: Women, Religion, Violence and Power
by former US president Jimmy Carter:

Page 183:
The issue of abortion is the major impediment to American approval of The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (which has been ratified by all nations except Iran, Palau, Somalia, Sudan, Tonga and the US) and similar international agreements that protect women's rights.
....There is a consensus within our Christian churches ....that a developing fetus should be protected whenever possible.  ..

This is a difficult issue for me. In many ways every abortion is an unplanned tragedy, brought about by a combination of human errors, and my Christian faith convinces me that a prospective parent should not make this decision unless the life of the mother is threatened or the pregnancy is caused by rape or incest. I accepted my obligation as president to enforce the Supreme Court ruling in Roe v. Wade that authorized some abortions, but I attempted to minimize their number through sex education, making contraceptives more available, special economic assistance for women and infant children, and the promotion of foster parenthood.

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

262The Church urgently needs the deep breath of prayer, and to my great joy groups devoted to prayer and intercession, the prayerful reading of God’s word and the perpetual adoration of the Eucharist are growing at every level of ecclesial life.

Even so, “we must reject the temptation to offer a privatized and individualistic spirituality which ill accords with the demands of charity, to say nothing of the implications of the incarnation”.

There is always the risk that some moments of prayer can become an excuse for not offering one’s life in mission; a privatized lifestyle can lead Christians to take refuge in some false forms of spirituality.

Really good NCR editorial about Iraq on yesterday's menu mentioned some of the things we can do to help the persecuted people of Iraq .....but did not mention we might pray for them. As on a number of other prominent websites, including The Tablet, suggesting people pray seems to be "politically incorrect".

Not so Pope Francis: he's calling on us all the time to storm Heaven on behalf of the people being persecuted in Iraq.
Our prayers can influence the hearts of IS leaders. We can send prayer rockets into those hearts to soften them.

Monica and Augustine

Luke 7(Augustine was "spiritually" dead, and came back to life)

Jesus went to a town called Nain, accompanied by his disciples and a great number of people. When he was near the gate of the town it happened that a dead man was being carried out for burial, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow.    Recording

A large number of the townspeople were with her. When the Lord saw her he felt sorry for her. ‘Do not cry’ he said. Then he went up and put his hand on the bier, and the bearers stood still, and he said, ‘Young man, I tell you to get up.’ And the dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him to his mother.   Recording

Everyone was filled with awe, and praised God saying, ‘A great prophet has appeared among us; God has visited his people.’ And this opinion of Jesus spread throughout Judaea and all over the countryside

Monica and Augustine - a beautiful story from  The Confessions of Saint Augustine

The day was now approaching when my mother Monica would depart from this life. She and I happened to be standing by ourselves at a window that overlooked the garden in the courtyard of the house. At the time we were in Ostia on the Tiber. And so the two of us, all alone, were enjoying a very pleasant conversation. We were asking one another what it would be like to share the eternal life enjoyed by the saints

You know, O Lord, that in the course of our conversation that day, the world and its pleasures lost all their attraction for us. My mother said, “Son, as far as I am concerned, nothing in this life now gives me any pleasure. I do not know why I am still here, since I have no further hopes in this world. I did have one reason for wanting to live a little longer: to see you become a Catholic Christian before I died. God has lavished his gifts on me in that respect, for I know that you have even renounced earthly happiness to be his servant. So what am I doing here?”

I do not really remember how I answered her. Shortly, within five days or thereabouts, she fell sick with a fever. Then one day during the course of her illness she became unconscious and for a while she was unaware of her surroundings. My brother and I rushed to her side, but she regained consciousness quickly. She looked at us as we stood there and asked in a puzzled voice: “Where was I?” We were overwhelmed with grief, but she held her gave steadily upon us, and spoke further: “Here you shall bury your mother.” Then she said “Bury my body wherever you will; let not care of it cause you any concern. One thing only I ask you, that you remember me at the altar of the Lord wherever you may be.” Once our mother had expressed this desire as best she could, she fell silent as the pain of her illness increased.

From A Call to Action: Women, Religion, Violence and Power
by former US president Jimmy Carter:

Page 176
quotes the words of Ritu Sharma, co-founder and president of Women Thrive Worldwide:

"There is no religion that despises women. Hatred cannot come from the heart of God. If there is hatred, its source is not the Creator. Only humans have the capacity to see and treat others as less than they truly are. It is our minds and hearts that must change to release women, girls, men and boys from the bondage of gender-based limitations or violence. That change is happening, right now in this very moment, in thousands of homes, schools, synagogues, chapels, mosques and centers of power around the world. That change is coming. Have faith. It will be here soon"

Remand inmates (not yet sentenced) at a HK detention centre are allowed to order meals from an outside canteen. Less than 10% of such inmates do this. Most enjoy (?) the free meals of the centre, rather than paying for outside meals. But those who pay (or are paid for by family or triad friends) enjoy very nice meals thank you. In fact yesterday as I was leaving the centre I saw some of the canteen meals being wheeled in ....and in one container there was a large bottle of red wine!
For what we are about to receive may the Lord make us truly grapeful!

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

262  Spirit-filled evangelizers are evangelizers who pray and work.

Mystical notions without a solid social and missionary outreach are of no help to evangelization, nor are dissertations or social or pastoral practices which lack a spirituality which can change hearts.

These unilateral and incomplete proposals only reach a few groups and prove incapable of radiating beyond them because they curtail the Gospel

What is needed is the ability to cultivate an interior space which can give a Christian meaning to commitment and activity

Without prolonged moments of adoration, of prayerful encounter with the word, of sincere conversation with the Lord, our work easily becomes meaningless; we lose energy as a result of weariness and difficulties, and our fervour dies out.

Ebola emergency means people with African passports entering HK are now subject to totally tight security screening ....which means anyone with an African passport trying to smuggle drugs into HK has a 99.9999% chance of a long holiday in a HK prison

John W  mini-Blog:

A local Chinese inmate I met at a detention centre yesterday reminded me I had seen him in Queen Elizabeth Hospital (custodial section) a few weeks ago ....he was there with a heart condition and swollen legs.

He said I gave him the little book "Doctor Jesus" ....and that night as he finished the book he noticed his condition had greatly improved ...and he continued to improve to the point where he was allowed to leave the hospital a few days later ....with no more talk of a possible operation.

I asked him when did his heart problem start. He said "at birth".  I've asked him to write up his story.
