Australia should stand up to Sri Lanka

Overwhelming power lies in the hands of the President and his brothers, one of whom is the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and the other, a powerful Minister. A third brother is the Speaker of Parliament. Certainly it is not in jest that Sri Lankans speak of their monarchic ruling family which is above the law

For Israel, the beginning of wisdom is to admit its mistakes

Israel should embrace Palestinian unity for its own security. A further land grab will only inflame tensions

Tobit 13:

Tobit praised and thanked God in these words:

"Blessed be God who lives for ever. Declare his praise in every nation.

He is our Creator, our God, our Father. Praise him for all his kindness to us.

My soul rejoices in the King of Heaven. Let his praise be sung in Jerusalem and in all nations."

Dear God, may you be known and loved by all the peoples of the world, since all people are your children

Psalms 14-15:

So many people live and act as if God doesn't exist. Some foolish people even say there is no God.

So many people have left the way of justice and truth. So many people follow the way of falsehood.

Lord, help us to live as we should.
Help us not to slander, help us not to wrong others.

Lord, please help me follow the way of justice and truth

Acts 14:

In Lycaonia, there was a man who had never walked in his life, because his feet were crippled from birth

As he listened to Paul preaching, Paul noticed him, and saw that he had the faith to be cured

Paul said in a loud voice "Get to your feet! Stand up!" The crippled man jumped up and began to walk

Jesus, please give sick people the faith to be cured

Matthew 26:

The men who arrested Jesus took him to a meeting of the religious leaders. The leaders wanted to condemn Jesus to death, even if they had to use false evidence

Jesus remained silent before their accusations. Then the main leader challenged Jesus: "Are you the Saviour, the Son of God?"

Jesus replied "Yes". The main leader then called out "We have heard him claim to be of Divine origin. This is blasphemy".

The rest of the leaders shouted "He should die". Then they spat in Jesus' face and hit him with their fists.

Jesus, thank you for submitting yourself to insult and spittle
for the salvation of the world

Re the above story about Sri Lanka. It is said that one of the president's brothers is involved in people smuggling.
If anyone can find an article about this, please send to me: jdwomi@gmail.com

It is said that in retaliation for this website's campaign to warn Africans about the danger of drug trafficking to HK,
HK Tanzanian inmates were threatened on a recent visit to their prisons by the Tanzanian ambassador from Beijing.
More on this story in coming weeks ....especially after I obtain a copy of all HK Tz inmates' names which apparently has been published in a Tanzanian newspaper - the names coming from the embassy in Beijing.

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

269Jesus himself is the model of this method of evangelization which brings us to the very heart of his people.

How good it is for us to contemplate the closeness which he shows to everyone

If he speaks to someone, he looks into their eyes with deep love and concern: “Jesus, looking upon him, loved him” (Mk 10:21 ).

We see how accessible he is, as he draws near the blind man (cf. Mk 10:46 -52) and eats and drinks with sinners (cf. Mk 2:16 ) without worrying about being thought a glutton and a drunkard himself (cf. Mt 11:19 ).

We see his sensitivity in allowing a sinful woman to anoint his feet (cf. Lk 7:36 -50) and in receiving Nicodemus by night (cf. Jn 3:1-15).

John W  mini-Blog:

Today is a public holiday in Hong Kong for the Mid-Autumn Festival. One thing that continues to puzzle me is the name "Mid-Autumn" (it's really the end of Summer ...very, very hot). Just like the name "Spring Festival" for Lunar Near Year (in the middle of Winter).

It seems that these names were accurate many thousands of years ago, but the lunar calendar has not been updated, unlike the solar calendar which is adjusted from time to time.

On the other hand, if nothing is changed for the next million years, the names will eventually be accurate again?!

For Feast of Birthday of Mary

Micah 5:

The Lord says this: But you, Bethlehem, the least of the clans of Judah, out of you will be born for me, the one who is to rule over Israel. His origin goes back to the distant past, to the days of old.

The Lord's help will be on hold until the time when she who is to give birth gives birth.

He will stand and feed his flock with the power of the Lord, with the majesty of the name of his God. He himself will be peace.

Romans 8:

We know that by turning everything to their good, God co-operates with all those who love him, with all those he has called according to his purpose.

They are the ones he chose specially long ago and intended to become true images of his Son, so that his Son might be the eldest of many brothers and sisters.

He called those he intended for this; those he called he justified, and with those he justified he shared his glory.

Matthew 1:

This is how Jesus Christ came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph; but before they came to live together she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.

Her husband Joseph being a man of honour and wanting to spare her publicity, decided to divorce her informally.

He had made up his mind to do this when the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because she has conceived what is in her by the Holy Spirit.

She will give birth to a son and you must name him Jesus, because he is the one who is to save his people from their sins.’

Now all this took place to fulfil the words spoken by the Lord through the prophet: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son; and they will call him Emmanuel, a name which means ‘God-is-with-us.’

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

268 The word of God also invites us to recognise that we are a people: “Once you were no people but now you are God’s people” (1 Pet 2:10 ).

To be evangelizers of souls, we need to develop a spiritual taste for being close to people’s lives and to discover that this is itself a source of great joy.

Mission is at once a passion for Jesus and a passion for his people.

When we stand before Jesus crucified, we see the depth of his love which exalts and sustains us, but at the same time, unless we are blind, we begin to realize that Jesus’ gaze, burning with love, expands to embrace all his people.

We realize once more that he wants to make use of us to draw closer to his beloved people. He takes us from the midst of his people and he sends us to his people; without this sense of belonging we cannot understand our deepest identity.

ISIS is a wake-up call to learn more about Islam. This video is excellent:
Quran Documentary
- it discusses:
* The conflicting views of peace and violence in the Quran.
* The Quran's emphasis on learning which produced great academic achievements. As early as the 9th century, Muslim scientists calculated the circumference of the earth, while medieval Europe clung to the concept of a flat earth. Trigonometry, Algebra and Geometry were wholly or largely Muslim inventions.
* The Sunni-Shia fault-line in Islam, and subdivisions, like Wahhabism (as in Saudi Arabia, which over the past  20 years, has spent US$100 billion propagating its militant version of Islam across the world, using a Quran that has been militantly edited).
* The huge contrast in treatment of women across the Muslim world.
* Female genital circumcision

Psalm 95:

Come ring out our joy to the Lord.
Hail the rock who saves us.
Let us come before him giving thanks.
With songs let us praise the Lord.

Come in, let us bow and bend low.
Let us kneel before the God who made us. For he is our God, and we are the people who belong to his pasture.

O that today you would listen to his voice!  ‘Harden not your hearts as at Meribah, as on that day at Massah in the desert, when your fathers put me to the test, when they tried me, though they saw my work.’

God, please don't ever let my heart harden to your message

Avoid getting into debt, except the debt of mutual love. If you love your neighbour you have carried out your obligations.

All the commandments: You shall not commit adultery, you shall not kill, you shall not steal, you shall not covet, and so on, are summed up in this single command: You must love your neighbour as yourself.

Love is the one thing that cannot hurt your neighbour; that is why it is the foundation of the commandments.

But if he refuses to listen to these, report it to the community; and if he refuses to listen to the community, treat him like a pagan or a tax collector.

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

267 In union with Jesus, we seek what he seeks and we love what he loves.

In the end, what we are seeking is the glory of the Father; we live and act “for the praise of his glorious grace” (Eph 1:6).

If we wish to commit ourselves fully and perseveringly, we need to leave behind every other motivation.

This is our definitive, deepest and greatest motivation, the ultimate reason and meaning behind all we do: the glory of the Father which Jesus sought at every moment of his life.

As the Son, he rejoices eternally to be “close to the Father’s heart” (Jn 1:18 ). If we are missionaries, it is primarily because Jesus told us that “by this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit” (Jn 15:8). Beyond all our own preferences and interests, our knowledge and motivations, we evangelize for the greater glory of the Father who loves us.

Islam File - issues to be taken seriously if we want to protect our freedom

A fascinating article about the history of democracy in HK:

Hong Kong, City of broken promises

HK's business leaders stopped Britain from giving democracy to HK people!

This is a story that all HK people should know!

One comment on story at left:
I clearly remember being told by a UK government official in HK in 1985, that in order to protect basic freedoms in HK, Britain planned to set up a democratic structure before the handback to China
But such a structure was not in the Basic Law, so China was within its rights to dismantle it after the 1997 takeover.
Bottom line: Britain acted too late to protect freedoms in HK!

Paul and Barnabas went to another city, Iconium. As usual, their first stop was the local Jewish prayer hall. Many Jews became believers, as did many non-Jewish people

During their stay in Iconium, Paul and Barnabas preached fearlessly for the Lord. And the Lord supported them by allowing miracles to be worked by them

All of Jesus' apostles then deserted him and ran away

Jesus was overcome with sadness and fear. He said to them "Sadness is filling my heart, as if my heart is dying. Please support me as I pray."

Then he fell on his face and prayed for about an hour: "Father, don't let this suffering continue. But your will be done".

If Pope Francis were to read this article, he might well cancel his January 2015 trip to Sri Lanka

The president’s rugby-playing sons Yoshitha and Namal have also enjoyed a meteoric rise in business. Tobit 9-10:

Realising that his parents would be worried about him, Tobias left for home as soon as the wedding feast was over.

Raguel gave Tobias and Sarah half his possessions, and prayed that he would see their children some day.

A happy and grateful Tobias thanked God for all the blessings of his journey to Media

Dear God, thank you for all the blessings of my life

Psalm 7:

Lord God, I take refuge in you.
Please rescue me from people who are trying to hurt me.

Lord, please stop bad people from doing bad things. Please help good people to keep on doing good things.

Lord, I will sing to you and thank you for your goodness to me.

Lord, please help us avoid evil and do good

Acts 13:

In the church at Antioch in Syria, the following were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon, Lucius, Manaen and Paul

One day while they were offering worship to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said "I want Barnabas and Paul set apart for the work to which I have called them"

After fasting and prayer, the leaders prayed for Barnabas and Paul with the laying on of hands, and sent them off on a missionary journey

Holy Spirit, help me be attentive to your guidance

Matthew 26:

On Passover Eve, Jesus ate a last meal with his apostles. While they were eating, Jesus told them he knew he would be betrayed by one of them. He told Judas he knew he was the betrayer.

Then Jesus took some bread, blessed it and gave it to his apostles saying "Take this and eat it. This is my body".

Then he took a cup of wine, blessed it and gave it to them saying "Take this and drink it. This is my blood".

Jesus, please help me understand how bread and wine become your body and blood when Christians celebrate the Eucharist

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

266. But this conviction has to be sustained by our own constantly renewed experience of savouring Christ’s friendship and his message.

It is impossible to persevere in a fervent evangelization unless we are convinced from personal experience that it is not the same thing to have known Jesus as not to have known him, not the same thing to walk with him as to walk blindly, not the same thing to hear his word as not to know it, and not the same thing to contemplate him, to worship him, to find our peace in him, as not to

John W  mini-Blog:

Yesterday with an Australian asylum seeker worker, I spent time with an asylum seeker family - father, mother and three young children. They are stateless in Hong Kong and living under great stress.

This is a cruel time to be an asylum seeker in any part of the world ....a world sadly giving in to what Pope Francis calls "the globalisation of indifference"

Each of us can ask:
what can I do to make a difference to indifference?

Tobit 8:

Before Tobias went to bed with Sarah, he remembered what Raphael had told him to do.

Tobias put some of the fish's heart and liver on burning incense. The smell of the fish made Asmodeus flee.

Tobias with Sarah then prayed to the Lord: "You are blessed O God of our fathers. Let the heavens and all creatures bless you, you who created Adam and Eve.

I now take Sarah as my wife
not for any lustful reason, but out of true love. Please have pity on us
and bring us to old age together." Then they went to bed.

Meanwhile Raguel, who feared Tobias would die, prepared a secret grave. But when Raguel sent a maid to the room of Tobias and Sarah, the maid found they were alive and sleeping peacefully.

Then Raguel too praised God:
"Thank you, my God, for making me happy. What I feared, has not happened."

The next day Raguel prepared the customary 14 day wedding feast.

Dear God, thank you for the many times when we could say "What I feared has not happened"

Have mercy on me, Lord, I have no strength. My body is racked with pain. Please heal me, Lord.

I am exhausted with my groaning.
Every night  my pillow is covered  with tears. Lord, please hear my prayer.

Acts 12:

Wearing his robes of state, and sitting on a throne, King Herod made a speech to the leaders of Tyre and Sidon. People acclaimed him saying "It is a god speaking, not a man!"

At that moment, the angel of the Lord struck him down, because he had not given the glory to God. He was eaten away with worms and died

Jesus, please help us remember that all our talents are a gift from you. "Not to us, Lord, but to your name be the glory"

Matthew 26:

A few days before the Passover festival, the religious leaders kept looking for a way to arrest Jesus and have him put to death

Jesus knew what was happening. He told his disciples "In a few days I will be crucified".

During these days Jesus had a meal at the home of Simon the leper. At the meal, a woman put expensive burial oil on Jesus' head. The woman understood  that Jesus was soon to die.

One of Jesus' 12 apostles, Judas Iscariot, went to the religious leaders and offered to help them arrest Jesus at a convenient time.

The leaders paid Judas 30 pieces of silver. Judas looked for an opportunity to arrange the arrest.

Jesus, please forgive me for the times when I have not been faithful  to you

A Chance Encounter
Maybe now we are fortunate to be offered the chance to live in a changing Church that seeks faith in its founder rather than in the many shades of clericalism that have dominated us in so many ways over recent years.

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

265. If we succeed in expressing adequately and with beauty the essential content of the Gospel, surely this message will speak to the deepest yearnings of people’s hearts:

“The missionary is convinced that, through the working of the Spirit, there already exists in individuals and peoples an expectation, even if an unconscious one, of knowing the truth about God, about man, and about how we are to be set free from sin and death. The missionary’s enthusiasm in proclaiming Christ comes from the conviction that he is responding to that expectation”.

Enthusiasm for evangelization is based on this conviction. We have a treasure of life and love which cannot deceive, and a message which cannot mislead or disappoint.

It penetrates to the depths of our hearts, sustaining and ennobling us. It is a truth which is never out of date because it reaches that part of us which nothing else can reach. Our infinite sadness can only be cured by an infinite love.

Late yesterday afternoon I had the joy of helping two street sleepers find a home.

Once again I found myself hoping and praying that someday soon Hong Kong will have emergency accommodation centres like those run by the Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul in so many parts of the world.
