Pope breaks taboo by marrying cohabiting couples
Headline is misleading:
most Church marriages in recent decades have been of cohabiting couples! There's no "taboo" except in the sense that there's not supposed to be sex before marriage

Four readings
with recordings

Judith 6:

Holofernes not only ignored Achior's advice, he ridiculed him for suggesting that the Israelites could resist his army.

Holofernes then handed Achior over to the Israelites "to suffer the same punishment as they would receive from Holofernes' army."

Dear God, when people ridicule us for speaking the truth,  please give us strength and courage

Psalm 22:

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? I call to you for help, but day and night you give no reply.

I am a worm and not a man.
Everyone who sees me makes fun of me.

They taunt  me: "He trusted in the Lord, why doesn't the Lord help him?"

Like water I am poured out, my bones no longer connected. My throat is parched, my tongue sticks to my jaws.

Many evil people attack me. They make holes in my hands and my feet. They await my death.

Jesus, please help me understand how these words predicted your suffering

Recording

Acts 16:

We went to a number of towns in Macedonia. In Philippi, the Jews had no prayer hall. They met on the river bank. We went there one Sabbath and preached to the women who were meeting there

One of these women was Lydia. The Lord opened her heart to what Paul was saying. She and her whole household were baptized

Jesus, open the hearts of more people to accept your word

Recommended: check these readings early morning, think about them during the day, check them again at night. This habit gives us extra energy, courage, motivation, peace and compassion for each day

Matthew 27:

Jesus was put on the cross about 9am. From about noon until 3pm there was darkness over all the land.

About 3pm Jesus cried out the words of Psalm 22: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

A little while later he again cried out in a loud voice. Then he died.

At that moment the holy curtain in the Temple was torn in two from top to bottom,  and there was a violent earthquake.

The Roman soldiers were terrified.
Their leader called out "Truly this was a son of God".

Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for the salvation of the world

Benedict, Me and the Cardinals Three

With permission of the author and his publisher, OMG! passes on a significant portion of a shocking memoir by Australian Bishop Bill Morris. Shocking because it is a perfect example of the tyranny that has marked the Church’s governance for the past 40 years, at least. Until the Lord gave us Pope Francis.

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

273. My mission of being in the heart of the people is not just a part of my life or a badge I can take off; it is not an “extra” or just another moment in life.

Instead, it is something I cannot uproot from my being without destroying my very self

I am a mission on this earth; that is the reason why I am here in this world.

We have to regard ourselves as sealed, even branded, by this mission of bringing light, blessing, enlivening, raising up, healing and freeing.

All around us we begin to see nurses with soul, teachers with soul, politicians with soul, people who have chosen deep down to be with others and for others.

But once we separate our work from our private lives, everything turns grey and we will always be seeking recognition or asserting our needs. We stop being a people.

Readings for Feast of Mary of Sorrows

Hebrews 5

During his life on earth, Christ offered up prayer and entreaty, aloud and in silent tears, to the one who had the power to save him out of death, and he submitted so humbly that his prayer was heard.

Although he was Son, he learnt to obey through suffering; but having been made perfect, he became for all who obey him the source of eternal salvation.

Psalm 31:

In you, O Lord, I take refuge. Let me never be put to shame. In your justice, set me free,  hear me and speedily rescue me.

Be a rock of refuge for me,  a mighty stronghold to save me, for you are my rock, my stronghold.

Into your hands I commend my spirit. It is you who will redeem me, Lord.

I trust in you, Lord. You are my God. My life is in your hands, deliver me from the hands of those who hate me.

A traditional prayer on this day:
The Stabat Mater

At the Cross her station keeping,
stood the mournful Mother weeping,

Luke 2:

As the child’s father and mother stood there wondering at the things that were being said about him, Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, ‘You see this child: he is destined for the fall and for the rising of many in Israel, destined to be a sign that is rejected – and a sword will pierce your own soul too – so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare.’

Recording

John 19:

Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala.

Seeing his mother and the disciple he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, ‘Woman, this is your son.

Then to the disciple he said, ‘This is your mother.’ And from that moment the disciple made a place for her in his home

make my soul to glow and melt

Who is the Pope really listening to?

I am seeing holes in his papacy! The religious sisters of the U.S. continue to be brow beaten by Cardinal Muller and the C.D.F.; no one is talking to the ACP and the Irish Church; excommunications go uncorrected; the universal church remains saddled with an imposed Roman Missal; and women and the laity continue to be kicked to the curb, when it suits a local bishop.

Irish Association of Priests:

Statement on the October Synod on the Family
The debacle of the New Missal needs to be in the mind of those who are present at the Synod. The New Missal was ill conceived and should never have been accepted by the Hierarchies throughout the world. The language was very wrong and every rule of translation was disregarded. The theology was also archaic and the Missal was unfit for Liturgy. The Leadership in the Irish Church needs to learn from such a major blunder. No other official document can be allowed to emerge from Rome or from a Synod, which is foreign to what we know to be appropriate in our Church and suitable for the people of our Church

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

272.  The work of evangelization enriches the mind and the heart; it opens up spiritual horizons; it makes us more and more sensitive to the workings of the Holy Spirit, and it takes us beyond our limited spiritual constructs.

A committed missionary knows the joy of being a spring which spills over and refreshes others

Only the person who feels happiness in seeking the good of others, in desiring their happiness, can be a missionary.

This openness of the heart is a source of joy, since “it is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35 ).

We do not live better when we flee, hide, refuse to share, stop giving and lock ourselves up in own comforts. Such a life is nothing less than slow suicide.

Readings for Feast of The Cross

Numbers 21:

On the way through the wilderness the people lost patience. They spoke against God and against Moses, ‘Why did you bring us out of Egypt to die in this wilderness? For there is neither bread nor water here; we are sick of this unsatisfying food.’

At this God sent fiery flying  serpents among the people; their bite brought death to many in Israel. The people came and said to Moses, ‘We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you. Intercede for us with the Lord to save us from these serpents.’

Moses interceded for the people, and the Lord answered him, ‘Make a fiery flying serpent and put it on a standard. If anyone is bitten and looks at it, he shall live.’ So Moses fashioned a bronze serpent which he put on a standard, and if anyone was bitten by a serpent, he looked at the bronze serpent and lived.

Psalm 77:

Give heed, my people, to my teaching; turn your ear to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth in a parable, and reveal hidden lessons of the past.

When God punished our ancestors, then they would seek him, return and seek him in earnest.

They would remember that God was their rock, God the Most High their redeemer.

But the words they spoke were mere flattery;  they lied to him with their lips. For their hearts were not truly with him;  they were not faithful to his covenant.

Yet he who is full of compassion forgave them their sin and spared them. So often he held back his anger, when he might have stirred up his rage.

Philippians 2:

His state was divine, yet Christ Jesus did not cling to his equality with God, but emptied himself to assume the condition of a slave and became as humans are

And being as all humans are, he was humbler yet, even to accepting death, death on a cross.

But God raised him high, and gave him the name which is above all other names, so that all beings in the heavens, on earth and in the underworld, should bend the knee at the name of Jesus, and that every tongue should acclaim Jesus Christ as Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Retreat
by James McAuley

Verses 2 & 3:

Soon you must return to tasks
That sicken and appall:
The calumnies will never cease,
Look only to the sign of peace,
The Cross upon the wall.

This is that sole instrument
That measures every chart;
This square and level overrules
The subtle calculus of fools
By a celestial art.

John 3:

Jesus said to Nicodemus: ‘No one has gone up to heaven except the one who came down from heaven, the Son of Man who is in heaven;

and the Son of Man must be lifted up, as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.

Yes, God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not be lost but may have eternal life.

For God sent his Son into the world not to condemn the world, but so that through him the world might be saved.’

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

272Loving others is a spiritual force drawing us to union with God; indeed, one who does not love others “walks in the darkness” (1 Jn 2:11 ), “remains in death” (1 Jn 3:14 ) and “does not know God” (1 Jn 4:8).

Benedict XVI has said that “closing our eyes to our neighbour also blinds us to God”, and that love is, in the end, the only light which “can always illuminate a world grown dim and give us the courage needed to keep living and working”.

When we live out a spirituality of drawing nearer to others and seeking their welfare, our hearts are opened wide to the Lord’s greatest and most beautiful gifts. Whenever we encounter another person in love, we learn something new about God. Whenever our eyes are opened to acknowledge the other, we grow in the light of faith and knowledge of God. If we want to advance in the spiritual life, then, we must constantly be missionaries.

271. Clearly Jesus does not want us to be grandees who look down upon others, but men and women of the people

This is not an idea of the Pope, or one pastoral option among others; it is an  injunction contained in the word of God which is so clear, direct and convincing that it needs no interpretations which might diminish its power to challenge us.

Let us live them sine glossa, without commentaries. By so doing we will know the missionary joy of sharing life with God’s faithful people as we strive to light a fire in the heart of the world.

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

271. It is true that in our dealings with the world, we are told to give reasons for our hope, but not as an enemy who critiques and condemns.

We are told quite clearly: “do so with gentleness and reverence” (1 Pet 3:15 ) and “if possible, so far as it depends upon you, live peaceably with all” (Rom 12:18 ).

We are also told to overcome “evil with good” (Rom 12:21 ) and to “work for the good of all” (Gal 6:10 ).

Far from trying to appear better than others, we should “in humility count others better” than ourselves (Phil 2:3). The Lord’s apostles themselves enjoyed “favour with all the people” (Acts 2:47 ; 4:21 , 33; 5:13 ).

Judith 1:

When Nebuchadnezzar was king of the Assyrians, he fought a war with King Arphaxad and his supporting nations.

Nebuchadnezzar sent a message to the nations near Assyria to help him fight Arphaxad.

But the peoples of those places ignored Nebuchadnezzar. They thought victory was beyond him.

But Nebuchadnezzar was in fact victorious, and after his victory he set out to punish the nations which
had refused his call for help.

Dear God, please help all nations to live in peace with each other

Psalms 17-18:

Lord,  when trouble breaks out on every side, please protect and help me.

For you are my strength, my rock, my fortress, my savior. I love you, Lord who save me because you love me.

Lord, you are my lamp who lightens my life. I will praise you among the nations.

Lord, thank you for loving and helping us

Acts 15:

Some Jewish Christians came to  Syrian Antioch from Judea and said that non-Jewish Christians should be circumcised. Paul and Barnabas argued against such an idea, and went to Jerusalem to discuss this issue with the apostles there

During a long meeting, Peter reminded everyone how the Holy Spirit had been poured out on non-circumcised people.

James  spoke of how all peoples are meant to be consecrated to the Lord

James then issued a teaching for non-Jewish believers:
"All we ask you to do is to abstain
- from food sacrificed to idols
- from blood from the meat of strangled animals
- from fornication.
Avoid these, and you will do what is right"

Jesus, please don't let me make unreasonable demands on other people

Matthew 27:

Early in the morning, the religious leaders had Jesus bound with ropes. They then took him to Pilate, the Roman governor.

The leaders accused Jesus of many crimes. To the governor's amazement, Jesus remained silent.

The leaders persuaded the crowd to demand the execution of Jesus. They called out to Pilate "Crucify him".

Pilate asked "Why? What has he done wrong?" The crowd shouted all the louder "Crucify him. Crucify him".

Pilate then washed his hands in front of the crowd, and said
"I am innocent of this man's blood". The crowd shouted "His blood be on us and on our children".

Pilate then ordered Jesus to be scourged and crucified.

Jesus, please help people who are condemned to death

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

270.  Sometimes we are tempted to be that kind of Christian who keeps the Lord’s wounds at arm’s length

Yet Jesus wants us to touch human misery, to touch the suffering flesh of others

He hopes that we will stop looking for those personal or communal niches which shelter us from the maelstrom of human misfortune and instead enter into the reality of other people’s lives and know the power of tenderness.

Whenever we do so, our lives become wonderfully (interconnected) and we experience intensely what it is to be a people, to be part of a people

Tobit 14:

Tobit was 62 when he went blind.
He died when he was 112.

After he was cured of blindness,
he continued his custom of helping the poor.

Before he died he said to his son Tobias: "Take your family and move to Media, since Nineveh will soon see war and strife. Serve God sincerely, always be willing to help poor people."

After Tobit and Anna died, Tobias moved to Media and lived with Raguel his father in law.

Dear God, please help me imitate Tobit in his kindness to poor people

Psalm 16:

Please protect me, Lord, I take refuge in you. You are the source of all true happiness.

I bless you, Lord, who guide and lead me. Even at night you direct my heart.

And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad. My body shall rest in safety now and always.

You will show me the path of life,
the fullness of joy in your presence; at your right hand, happiness for ever.

Thank you, Lord, for the little joys you give us each day ....and the big joy you've prepared for us in Heaven.

Acts 14:

Some Jewish leaders arrived from Pisidian Antioch and Iconium. They turned the people of Lycaonia against Paul and Barnabas

The people stoned Paul and, thinking he was dead, dragged him outside the town

The disciples gathered around Paul's body. As they did so, he stood up. The next day he and Barnabas went to the town of Derbe

After Derbe, they went back to Pisidian Antioch via Lystra and Iconium.  In each place they encouraged the believers to persevere in the faith, especially during difficult times in their lives

In each place they also appointed elders to be church leaders

Eventually Paul and Barnabas arrived back in Syrian Antioch, where they gave an account of how God had opened the door of faith to non-Jewish people

Jesus, please help me persevere in the faith, like Paul and Barnabas

Matthew 26:

Peter went to the place where the religious leaders had Jesus on trial. A young woman in the courtyard of the place  said to him "You are a friend of the Galilean".

In front of the woman and people around her, Peter said "I don't know what you're talking about".

Peter went to the gateway of the place, where another woman said to people around her "This man is a friend of the Galilean". Peter replied strongly "I don't know the man".

Not long after this a group of people said to Peter "You are his friend. We can tell by your Galilean accent".

Then Peter even more strongly replied "I do not know the man".

At that very moment, a rooster crowed. Peter remembered Jesus' words "Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times".   Peter went outside and wept loudly.

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel    Full text     Summary

269.   Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross is nothing else than the culmination of the way he lived his entire life.

Moved by his example, we want to enter fully into the fabric of society, sharing the lives of all, listening to their concerns, helping them materially and spiritually in their needs, rejoicing with those who rejoice, weeping with those who weep; arm in arm with others, we are committed to building a new world.

But we do so not from a sense of obligation, not as a burdensome duty, but as the result of a personal decision which brings us joy and gives meaning to our lives.

Most of yesterday (a public holiday for the Mid-Autumn Festival) was spent answering mail from inmates - which included processing letters for internet etc. - and in assisting people in need of help: e.g. an ex-inmate without food, a wheelchair lady who had lost her wallet and other items.
