It is claimed that the arrest of Chonji has to do with the son of the Tanzania’s ambassador in China, the one who threatened the Tanzanian prisoners in Hong Kong prisons to stop writing the letters you publish on this website. It is claimed that the ambassador’s son is also involved in this drug business. The son was given by Chonji drugs worth Tsh. 250 million to sell but later informed Chonji that the drugs had been lost, or found by the authorities, which Chonji didn’t believe. So Chonji arranged for some guys to rape him. His father responded, leading to the arrest of Chonji and others. This is what has been claimed

Job 2:

Satan asked permission from God to test Job even further. God gave permission.

Satan struck Job with sores and ulcers from the soles of his feet
to the top of his head. Job scraped himself with a piece of pot.

His wife told him to curse God and die. But Job replied "If we take happiness from God's hand, must we not take sorrow too?"

News of Job's situation reached three of his friends: Eliphaz,
Bildad and Zophar and they decided to visit Job.

When they drew near to Job, they did not recognize him.

They wept, tore their clothes and sat on the ground beside Job for 7 days without speaking, stunned and saddened by Job's appearance.

Dear God, please help me imitate Job's trust and faith

Psalm 81:

Ring out your joy to God our strength, shout in triumph to the God of Jacob.

Listen to the voice of the Lord:

"I am the Lord your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt.

Let there be no foreign god among you, no worship of a false god.

O that my people would heed me,
that Israel would walk in my ways.

At once I would subdue their foes.
But Israel I would feed with finest wheat and honey".

Lord, please help us to walk in your ways

Job and his three friends

Acts 28:

After three months we set sail in a ship going to Italy. Our trip took us to Syracuse, Rhegium and Puteoli before we arrived in Rome

Believers in Rome heard of Paul's arrival and came to meet us. When Paul saw them, he thanked God with all his heart

Paul was allowed to stay in lodgings of his own, with a soldier to guard him

Jesus, thank you helping Paul reach Rome safely. Thank you for protecting me on all my journeys

Mark 7:

Jesus traveled through the area south of the Sea of Galilee. A deaf man with a speech impediment was brought to him.

Jesus took the man aside in private, away from the crowd. He put his fingers into the man's ears and put spittle on his tongue.

Then he prayed and said "Be opened". The man's ears were opened and his speech became normal.

The people said "He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak".

Jesus, please heal (..name..) who is "deaf and dumb"

Job 1:  ("Joe-b")

Job lived in Southern Israel. He had 7 sons and 3 daughters. He owned thousands of animals. He loved God and was a good man.

Satan, one of the fallen angels, challenged God to let Job be put to the test. God gave permission to Satan to test Job.

On one day, all Job's animals were captured by raiders, and all his children died in a storm.

Job tore his clothes, shaved his head, bowed to the ground and prayed: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, naked I shall return to the womb of the earth.
The Lord gave, the Lord has taken back. Blessed be the name of the Lord."

Dear God, please give us courage and faith when life is difficult

Psalms 79-80:

O God, the nations have invaded your sacred land, they have profaned your holy temple. They have made Jerusalem a heap of ruins.

We have become the taunt of our neighbours, the mockery and scorn of those who surround us.

How long, O Lord, will all this last? How long will this sorrow keep going?

Do not hold the guilt of our ancestors against us. If their guilt is somehow influencing our situation now, please give peace and healing to everyone and everything in our  history.

Let the groans of the prisoners come before you. Let your strong arm reprieve those condemned to die.

O Lord, our God, help us and save us. Let your face shine on us and we shall be saved.

Lord, please heal any problems in my family tree

Acts 28:

We were on the island of Malta. The local people were really kind to us. They made us welcome. They lit a huge fire because the weather was cold and rain was falling.

Paul collected a bundle of sticks and was putting them on the fire, when a snake bit his hand and held on. The locals expected him to die. But he just shook the snake into the fire. He was ok

The local Roman governor kindly gave us hospitality for three days. The governor's father was very sick in bed with fever and dysentery. He was healed when Paul prayed for him with the laying on of hands.

Word of the healing got around fast, and soon everyone on the island who was sick, came and got healed

Jesus, please bless the people of Malta

Mark 7:

Jesus went to the district of Tyre.
A foreign woman fell at his feet and begged him to expel a devil from her daughter

Jesus said "The children (= Jews)  should be fed first. It's not right to give the children's food to the house dogs (= foreigners)"

She replied "Ah yes, Sir, but the house dogs under the table can eat the children's scraps"

Jesus said to her "For expressing such great faith, you can go home happy. The devil has gone out of your daughter".

She went home and found the child lying on a bed, and the devil gone

Jesus, please give sick people a strong faith in you

There is a legitimate concern on the part of the magisterium. That concern is to do with the question of whether the RC Church must accommodate all sorts of lifestyles and beliefs that are a part of this worldly life. Maybe they do, if Jesus would.

On yesterday's menu, I posted a smile about a badly dressed guy who upset the pastor and his people by attending a service. At yesterday's 3-5pm prayer meeting for the sick at St Paul's Yau Ma Tei, I told this story ....and almost as soon as I finished, a badly dressed and smelly street guy came in and joined our meeting. Who says God doesn't have a sense of humour. Come to think of it, when we are kind to special strangers, we are kind to Jesus. So it was Jesus who joined the meeting!

The Greatest Commandment

There are many commandments and canons. Let us leave them to the experts.  Let us love the Lord our God in return for his love. This love of God will enable us to love our neighbour

Previous reflections   Chinese text

1 Thess 1:

It was with the joy of the Holy Spirit that you took to the gospel, in spite of the great opposition all round you.

This has made you the great example to all believers in Macedonia and Achaia since it was from you that the word of the Lord started to spread.

The news of your faith in God has spread everywhere. We do not need to tell other people about it: other people tell us how we started the work among you, how you broke with idolatry when you were converted to God and became servants of the real, living God

Jesus, please help us do our part to spread your Good News

Matthew 22:

In Jerusalem a religious leader asked Jesus "Which is the most important commandment?"

Jesus replied "You must love the Lord your God with all your heart.
And you must care as much about others as you care about yourself.

These are the two most important commandments. All other commandments depend on  these two."

Jesus, please help me love you with all my heart, and care for others as much as I care about myself

Pope Francis’ challenge to income inequality

Recovering ancient Israel’s spirituality of sex

Ronald Rolheiser, O.M.I., a widely respected lecturer and spiritual writer, contends that churches never attained a very healthy spirituality of sexuality. Father Rolheiser suggests that we moderns have reduced sexuality to genitality, detaching it from the heart, family, fertility, community and church. The Scriptures, however, make it clear that these passionate longings come directly from God, who commands humankind to “be fruitful and multiply” (Gn 1:28). In the theology of Genesis, sexual energy is a part of God’s garden of delight. The Song of Songs, which employs abundant garden imagery, reaffirms that reality and celebrates sex. A major task of churches in the 21st century will be to rediscover and reintegrate sexual energies as part of our spirituality, to reimagine a context that understands sex as a sacrament and to mentor people of all life stages in the art of soulful romance. Fortunately, we need not reinvent the wheel in this work; the Song of Songs provides a theological, biblical starting point accessible across generations.

To go with today's Gospel:

A biker decided to reform his life, and so he attended a church on Sunday. It was his first time ever in church, and he had been drinking the night before. He didn't smell very good, and he was in ripped jeans, a leather motorcycle jacket, and an untrimmed beard. People in the church were careful to scoot away from him in the pew. A couple ladies even held their nose and waved handkerchiefs to clear the air.

The biker sat through the whole service, though, including a sermon on loving your neighbor. That encouraged the biker, so on the way out he was careful to shake the preacher's hand. As he did, the preacher leaned forward and whispered, “The next time you come to my church, make sure you ask God how you should be dressed when you come.”

The next week the biker was back in the same pew, dressed exactly the same way, though he did at least smell a little better because he hadn't been drinking. He enjoyed the sermon once again, and on the way out it seemed as though the preacher was looking for him. When he got to the door, the preacher pulled him aside, clearly irritated. “I thought I told you to ask God how you should be dressed when you come here!“ he huffed.

“I did,” the biker protested. “He said he didn't know because he'd never been here.”

 1 Maccabees 15:

In 138 B.C., Antiochus son of Demetrius made war with Trypho.
This same Antiochus became hostile to Simon  after the Romans
renewed their treaty with Israel.

When Antiochus sent an army to attack Israel, Simon defeated that army.

A disloyal and ambitious Jew named Ptolemy got Simon and two of his sons drunk at a banquet and killed them.

Simon was succeeded by his son John as leader of the Jews.

Psalm 78:

May future generations not be like our ancestors who so often were unfaithful to God.

Even though our ancestors had seen God part the sea, even though they had seen him provide food and water for them in the desert, still they went on sinning.

Yet he who is full of compassion forgave and spared them. He remembered they were only weak humans.

Eventually he brought them to the promised land and gave a home to each of Israel's tribes.

But still they sinned by building mountain shrines and serving idols.

Then God raised up David to be their leader. God called him from looking after sheep to be the shepherd of his people.

Lord, don't let us forget all you have done for us

Jesus then walked on the water towards the boat. He called out to his disciples "Courage. It is I. Don't be afraid."

Then he got into the boat, and the wind stopped.

Jesus, please give me courage by helping me remember that you are in my boat (my life)

Four readings
with recordings

Comments welcome here! Readers are most welcome to post comments and reflections on these readings

1 Maccabees 11:

King Ptolemy of Egypt pretended to be friends with Alexander. But then he went to war with Alexander.

Ptolemy's army won the battle, but not long after both Ptolemy and Alexander died.

Demetrius then became king.  He had an unstable relationship with Jonathan even though Jonathan on one occasion rescued him from former supporters of Alexander.

Demetrius was replaced as king by a young Antiochus. Antiochus confirmed Jonathan's position as leader of Israel.

Dear God, please stop countries from fighting each other

Psalm 72:

O Lord, please bless the king,
that he might serve your people with justice.

May the mountains bring forth peace for the people and the hills, justice.

The kings of Sheba and Seba bring him gifts. All nations will serve him.

He will save the poor when they cry for help and the needy who are helpless.

He will have pity on the weak
and save the lives of the poor.

May every tribe be blessed in him.
May every nation bless his name.

May all the nations know and love you, Lord

Acts 27:

For the journey to Rome, Paul and some other prisoners were put in the custody of a soldier named Julius.

After sailing for one day, we arrived at the city of Sidon, where Julius kindly allowed Paul to meet with some friends

Then we sailed past Cyprus and reached the city of Myra in Lycia, where we changed to a ship bound for Italy

The wind was against us near Crete. We struggled along the coast to a place called Fair Havens

Jesus, help prison guards to be kind like Julius

Today's Gospel!

Mark 6:

Once after Jesus had been healing and teaching many people all afternoon, his disciples said to him "It's getting late and the people need to go and eat".

Jesus replied "They don't need to go. You feed them". The disciples replied "We have only 5 loaves and 2 fish".

Jesus got the people to sit on the grass. There were about 20,000 of them. Then he blessed the loaves and fish.

He handed the loaves and fish to his disciples. His disciples gave them to the crowd.

Everyone had plenty to eat. They even had 12 baskets of leftovers.

Jesus, please help the starving people of the world

Stones Still Standing
The Church is an act of faith and its members, living examples of faith in action. That is where the focus must be clear and sharp. Our faith in the person of Jesus and our willingness to make the Gospel the sign post of our journey comes before everything. If that means being realistic in our time for the sake of the people, then that we must be.

Moments of Magnanimity
In Australia during the last 50 years, we have been invited on at least three occasions to respond to “moments of magnanimity”, says Garry Everett. As a nation, we will soon be offered a fourth moment.

However dramatic, the Synod of Bishops 2014 was just the beginning

Some say Francis loosed forces he can't control. But others believe he now knows where bishops stand -- and what he has to do to implement his vision for the future of the Church
