Shame,

I am writing as a mother in Nauru house of detention. After 10 months of being detained on Christmas Island, my three-member family was brought here: myself and my husband and my son who is not yet three. As I knew we were going to be forcefully taken to Nauru, I felt sadness and spent all the night crying in misery |

Doing the
recordings for this site and for Ming Pao has made me aware of how I,
like many Australians, add a "g" sound to many words. For
"finger" (in today's 3rd reading) I usually say "fing-ger"
but it should be "fin-ger". For "monkey" I usually
say "mong-key". For "anger" I say "ang-ger". But just now I just checked this expert ....and he also says "fing-ger", "mong-key" and "ang-ger"! |

Vatican micro-managers of the Mass need to be shown the door
What has raised my blood pressure is the directive from the Congregation of Divine Worship in Rome - the geniuses that brought us the New Missal – that from now on, at the sign of peace, priests are not permitted to leave their place at the altar to exchange a sign of peace with the people, not even with those who are mourning a loved one or celebrating a marriage - Brendan Hoban |

Job
1: ("Joe-b") On one day, all Job's animals were captured by raiders, and all his children died in a storm. Job tore his clothes, shaved his head, bowed
to the ground and prayed:
"Naked I came from my mother's womb, naked I shall return to the womb of the earth. Dear God, please give us courage and faith when life is difficult Recording of this reading |
Psalms
79-80: We have become the taunt of our neighbours, the mockery and scorn of those who surround us. How long, O Lord, will all this last? How long will this sorrow keep going? Do not hold the guilt of our ancestors against us. If their guilt is somehow influencing our situation now, please give peace and healing to everyone and everything in our history. Let the groans of the prisoners come before you. Let your strong arm reprieve those condemned to die. O Lord, our God, help us and save us. Let your face shine on us and we shall be saved. Lord, please heal any problems in my family tree

Acts 28: We were on the island of Malta. The local people were really kind to us. They made us welcome. They lit a huge fire because the weather was cold and rain was falling. Paul collected a bundle of sticks and was putting them on the fire, when a snake bit his hand and held on. The locals expected him to die. But he just shook the snake into the fire. He was ok The local Roman governor kindly gave us hospitality for three days. The governor's father was very sick in bed with fever and dysentery. He was healed when Paul prayed for him with the laying on of hands. Word of the healing got around fast, and soon everyone on the island who was sick, came and got healed Jesus, please bless the people of Malta

It's not right to give the children's food to the house dogs (= foreigners)" She replied "Ah yes, Sir, but the house dogs under the table can eat the children's scraps" Jesus said to her "For expressing such great faith, you can go home happy. The devil has gone out of your daughter". She went home and found the child lying on a bed, and the devil gone Jesus, please give sick people a strong faith in you

On yesterday's menu, I posted a smile about a badly dressed guy who upset the pastor and his people by attending a service. At yesterday's 3-5pm prayer meeting for the sick at St Paul's Yau Ma Tei, I told this story ....and almost as soon as I finished, a badly dressed and smelly street guy came in and joined our meeting. Who says God doesn't have a sense of humour. Come to think of it, when we are kind to special strangers, we are kind to Jesus. So it was Jesus who joined the meeting! |

22: Dear God, please help us be kind to poor people, as you are kind to us Recording of this reading |
Psalms
17-18: For you are my strength, my rock, my fortress, my savior. I love you, Lord who save me because you love me. Lord, you are my lamp who lightens my life. I will praise you among the nations. Lord, thank you for loving and helping us
|
1 Thess 1: It was with the joy of the Holy Spirit that you took to the gospel, in spite of the great opposition all round you. This has made you the great example to all believers in Macedonia and Achaia since it was from you that the word of the Lord started to spread. The news of your faith in God has spread everywhere. We do not need to tell other people about it: other people tell us how we started the work among you, how you broke with idolatry when you were converted to God and became servants of the real, living God Jesus,
please help us do our part to spread your Good News |
Matthew
22: Jesus replied
"You must love the Lord your God with all your heart. These are the two most important commandments. All other commandments depend on these two." Jesus, please help me love you with all my heart, and care for others as much as I care about myself |

Recovering
ancient Israel’s spirituality of sex
Ronald Rolheiser, O.M.I., a widely respected lecturer and spiritual writer, contends that churches never attained a very healthy spirituality of sexuality. Father Rolheiser suggests that we moderns have reduced sexuality to genitality, detaching it from the heart, family, fertility, community and church. The Scriptures, however, make it clear that these passionate longings come directly from God, who commands humankind to “be fruitful and multiply” (Gn 1:28). In the theology of Genesis, sexual energy is a part of God’s garden of delight. The Song of Songs, which employs abundant garden imagery, reaffirms that reality and celebrates sex. A major task of churches in the 21st century will be to rediscover and reintegrate sexual energies as part of our spirituality, to reimagine a context that understands sex as a sacrament and to mentor people of all life stages in the art of soulful romance. Fortunately, we need not reinvent the wheel in this work; the Song of Songs provides a theological, biblical starting point accessible across generations. |

To go
with today's Gospel: A biker decided to reform his life, and so he attended a church on Sunday. It was his first time ever in church, and he had been drinking the night before. He didn't smell very good, and he was in ripped jeans, a leather motorcycle jacket, and an untrimmed beard. People in the church were careful to scoot away from him in the pew. A couple ladies even held their nose and waved handkerchiefs to clear the air. The biker sat through the whole service, though, including a sermon on loving your neighbor. That encouraged the biker, so on the way out he was careful to shake the preacher's hand. As he did, the preacher leaned forward and whispered, “The next time you come to my church, make sure you ask God how you should be dressed when you come.” The next week the biker was back in the same pew, dressed exactly the same way, though he did at least smell a little better because he hadn't been drinking. He enjoyed the sermon once again, and on the way out it seemed as though the preacher was looking for him. When he got to the door, the preacher pulled him aside, clearly irritated. “I thought I told you to ask God how you should be dressed when you come here!“ he huffed. “I did,” the biker protested. “He said he didn't know because he'd never been here.” |
