Tues Nov 4      My HK Democracy File, with photos

Yesterday I went to a poor residential area of Hung Hom to collect and store the items of an asylum seeker who was living there but has now been jailed for six months. While there I met an asylum seeker from the Central African Republic. He has been in HK for a year. On the way home in a taxi (with the first asylum seeker's clothes etc in large travel bags) I experienced the harm that is being done to ordinary people by the Mong Kok protest: major roads in the vicinity of Mong Kok are terribly congested. The aim of the protesters is good, but their method is causing great suffering to many HK people.             Time for protestors to move

Job 18-19:

Bildad then said that Job's suffering was caused by his sins.

Job repeated that he was innocent of any wrong-doing. He added:
"I am sure of three things:
my God lives,
my God will rescue me,
and I will see my God's face."

Dear God, I believe you live
and that someday I will see your face

Lyrics: I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth. And though worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God. (Job 19:25-26).
For now is Christ risen from the dead, the first fruits of them that

Psalm 87:

On the holy mountain is Jerusalem, the Lord's cherished city.

Of you are told glorious things, O city of God.

All nations are called to serve and love the Lord. And Jerusalem shall be called their spiritual mother,
for all shall be her children.

In Jerusalem everyone will be welcome and find a home.

Lord, may Jerusalem be a place of peace and prayer for all peoples

Romans 1:

Refusing to honor the Creator is why people's behaviour went bad:

why women turned from natural intercourse to unnatural practices, and why men gave up natural intercourse to be consumed with passion for each other, men doing shameless things with men, and getting an appropriate reward for their perversion

Since people refused to honor God, they have dishonored themselves

Job 15-17:

Eliphaz then said that Job's own words condemned him since he was in fact challenging God.

Job replied that he was sick and tired of listening to his friends' speeches.  He also said he felt death was not far away:

"My breath grows weak, I am ridiculed by everyone, every fiber of my heart is broken.  I have no hope."

All the nations shall come to adore you and glorify your name, O Lord, you who alone are God.

Show me, Lord, your way, and guide my heart so that I may walk in your truth.

I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart for your love to me has been great.

Today's Gospel

Romans 1:

Everyone needs the Good News, especially people who put truth in prison

Ever since the world began, people could know God by seeing the wonders of creation. But even though they saw the beauty of creation, they refused to honor the Creator

They replaced honor for God with honor for images of men and beasts. They worshipped a god they made instead of God who made them

Jesus, may the beauty of creation help people know you and your Father and the Holy Spirit

Mark 9:

A man brought his son to Jesus and pleaded:

"Master, there is a spirit of dumbness in my son. When it takes hold of him, it throws him to the ground, and he foams at the mouth and goes rigid"

They brought the boy. As soon as the spirit saw Jesus, it threw the boy into convulsions

Jesus asked the father "How long has this been happening?" He replied "From childhood....please help us!"

Jesus said "Everything is possible if you have faith". The father cried out "Please increase my faith!"

Jesus rebuked the evil spirit: "Deaf and dumb spirit, I command you: come out of him and never enter him again"

The spirit came out, but the boy seemed to have died. Jesus took him by the hand and helped him up

Jesus' disciples asked "Why were we unable to expel that spirit?"
Jesus replied "Only prayer can drive out that kind of spirit"

Jesus, please help me pray better,
so that I can help other people more

Melbourne: Healthy Open Discussion on Church Law

The Pumphouse Hotel function room in Fitzroy was filled to capacity on 29 October at a Discussion jointly sponsored by Catholics For Renewal Inc. and Catalyst For renewal on "The Role of Church Law in the Child Abuse Issue: Help or Hindrance". Speaker was Kieran Tapsell, author of Potiphar's Wife (presentation here), and the Responder, speaking in a private capacity, was Canon Lawyer Rev. Professor Ian Waters. Echoing the spirit of the recent Extraordinary Synod in Rome the presentations were open, honest and respectful, but lively. The presentations were similarly followed by lively audience interaction with both speakers. Time ran out before Questions and Discussion were exhausted. The Discussion was recorded in 3 parts and 2 of these may be viewed here now (Part 3 will be available later after shortening): 1.Kieran Tapsell , 2.Ian Waters , 3. Audience & Speakers

All Souls Day for all faiths is a day to remember
It is not only Christians who celebrate All Souls Day. A time to remember those who have gone before us is celebrated by various faiths.

The Muslims have it when they celebrate Shab-e-Barat, the Hindus during Pithru Paksha, and the Buddhists as well as the Parsis also observe it. The dates and origins may differ from religion to religion but commemorating the dead remains unvarying.

Today's Gospel

Matthew 25: 31-40

Jesus said to his disciples: When I come in glory at the end of the world, all peoples of all times will be gathered in front of me.

I will separate them, like a shepherd separates sheep from goats. I will place the sheep on my right, the goats on my left.

I will say to those on my right "Come and enter my kingdom. For I was hungry, and you gave me food. I was thirsty, and you gave me drink. I was a stranger, and you made me welcome. I was naked, and you clothed me. I was sick, and you visited me. I was in prison, and you came to see me".

Then those good people on my right will say "Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you? When did we see you thirsty and give you a drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you,
naked and clothe you, sick or in prison, and visit you?"

I will answer "Each time you helped and cared for a poor person, you helped and cared for me".

Recording

Matthew 25: 41-46

Then I will say to those on my left "Go away from me and join Satan and his angels in hell.

For I was hungry, and you never gave me food. I was thirsty, and you never gave me anything to drink. I was a stranger, and you never made me welcome, naked, and you never clothed me, sick and in prison, and you never visited me".

Those on my left will then ask
"Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty, a stranger or naked, sick or in prison, and did not come to your help?"

I will answer "Each time you refused to help and care for a poor person, you refused to help and care for me".

Those on the left will then go to eternal punishment. Those on the right will go to eternal life.

Jesus, please help me do more for poor people. Make me understand that when I help a poor person, I help you

Once again on the ground, he called to Heaven, “All right, just half of you this time!”

So, she asked the boy's grandfather to accompany him. Realizing that older gent always nodded off during services, the lady offered her son fifty cents to keep him awake. Half way through the sermon the lady glanced from the choir loft and saw/heard her snoring relative. Upon questioning the boy after Church as to why he didn't do his "paid" job of keeping grandfather awake, the boy said that grandfather offered him a dollar to let him sleep

how he must go to Jerusalem to suffer, die and rise from the dead.

He also said "If you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself,
take up your own cross, and follow me.

Selfishness will ruin your life.
Self-sacrificing will bless your life.

What use is it to have everything in this world yet miss out on Heaven?"

Jesus, please help me find my life by losing it in service of others

The preacher said: "There's no such thing as a perfect man. Anybody present who has ever known a perfect man, stand up." Nobody stood up. "Those who have ever known a perfect woman, stand up." One demure little woman stood up. "Did you ever know an absolutely perfect woman?" he asked, somewhat amazed. "I didn't know her personally," replied the little old woman, "but I have heard a great deal about her. She was my husband's first wife."

Four readings
with recordings

Comments welcome here! Readers are most welcome to post comments and reflections on these readings

Job 3-7:

Job broke the 7 day silence by wishing that he had never been
born. He added "For me, there is no peace, no sleep. My suffering doesn't let me rest."

Eliphaz then spoke and reminded Job that God corrects those whom he loves.

Job replied that he was innocent of any wrongdoing, so why was he being punished?  He added: "Lying in bed I wonder 'When will it be day?'  During the day I think 'How slowly night comes.' Neither day or night offers me any relief from my suffering."

Dear Lord, please give courage and peace to people who are suffering great pain or distress

Psalms 82-83:

God says to corrupt officials:

"How long will you judge unjustly and mistreat the poor? You should do justice for the weak and the orphan.

You should defend the afflicted and the needy. You should rescue the weak and the poor. You should set them free from the hand of the wicked".

O God, please protect your people from corruption and injustice.
Save us also from attack by other nations.

Let everyone know that you are the Lord of all the earth.

Lord, please stop corrupt officials from hurting people

Acts 28:

Not long after his arrival in Rome, Paul had a meeting with a large number of Jews. The meeting went from early morning until evening

Paul talked to them about the kingdom of God. He tried to help them believe in Jesus. Some accepted Jesus

Paul was in detention for two years, in his own rented house. He welcomed everyone who came to visit him.  With boldness and without hindrance, he taught people about the Lord Jesus Christ

Jesus, thank you for the Acts of the Apostles. May I help more people know and love you, like Paul

Mark 8:

In the village of Bethsaida, a blind man was brought to Jesus. His friends begged Jesus to touch him.

Jesus took the man by the hand and led him outside the town. Jesus put spittle on the man's eyes and placed his hands on the man's eyes.

"Can you see anything?" asked Jesus. The man was starting to see and replied "I can see people. They look like trees, but they are walking about".

Jesus then placed his hands on the man's eyes again, and he saw clearly. He was healed and could see everything clearly.

Jesus, heal my friend (..name..) who is blind

An empty seat

So many cities have homeless rough sleepers whom we pass by and do not notice. What questions must be asked of a society that accepts homelessness and destitution alongside the glamour and extravagance of an affluent society? No small wonder that this piece of street art has become an embarrassment to so many

My wife and I were in a church service. There was an older gentleman in the audience near the front who would periodically interject a "Praise God" or "Amen, brother". During the sermon, when the pastor began speaking about Solomon with his 700 wives and 300 concubines, the old man said "Lord have mercy"
