Proverbs 1:

If you listen to these sayings, you will acquire wisdom. These sayings will help you develop virtue, justice and fairness.

Be careful of bad people who try to mislead you. A net is spread in vain if the bird is watching.

Wisdom calls aloud in the streets.
She delivers her message at the city gates:

"How much longer will you prefer ignorance to knowledge? The complacency of fools works their own ruin.

But whoever listens to me will live in safety. Whoever listens to me will choose good and avoid evil."

Dear God, please give us more wisdom

Psalm 93:

The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed, he has girded himself with power.

The world you made firm, not to be moved. From all eternity, O Lord, you are.

The oceans and coastlines of the world are majestic and powerful.

But greater than the roar of mighty waters, more glorious than the surging of the sea is the Lord on high.

Such a Lord, such a Creator, such a God. Truly your decrees are to be trusted.

Holiness is fitting to your house
O Lord, always and everywhere.

We praise you, Lord, our Creator

Romans 6:

When we were baptized, two things happened:
1: We went into Jesus' tomb and joined him in death. We died.
2: We rose from the dead with Jesus. We came back to life

This dying and rising means we have died to sin, and risen to a new life.

We died to an old life, and  we came back to a new life. We have been re-born, born again

Jesus, please help me leave my old life behind. Help me live a new life with you

 Mark 10:

The brothers James and John were two of Jesus' disciples. One day their mother said to Jesus "When you become king, allow my sons to sit at your right and left".

Jesus said to his cousins James and John "Only my Father in heaven can allocate seats on my right and left".

The 10 other disciples were angry at James and John for seeking honor.  So Jesus said to them all  "In most places, people in power like to dominate and control others. But this is not to be your way of exercising authority.

You must exercise authority by serving others, not dominating them, just as I came not to be served, but to serve, and to give my life as a ransom for the world"

Jesus, please help me want to help and serve other people, not dominate and control them

Job 40-42:

Job said to God " My words have been frivolous. I will not say anything else."

God then reminded Job how God was creator of everything, including amazing animals like the hippo and crocodile.

Job then said to God "I know you are all-powerful. I have been speaking about things I don't fully understand. I retract all I have said and in dust and ashes I repent."

God then praised Job for his fidelity. God restored Job to good health.

God restored Job's possessions, more than he had before, with 10 more children and thousands of animals. Job lived to be 140 years old and died full of peace.

Dear God, you never really answered Job's questions about the mystery of evil and suffering ....but I know your Son Jesus gave us the answers

c.f. Feast of St John Lateran

Ezekiel 47:

The angel brought me to the entrance of the Temple, where a stream came out from under the Temple threshold and flowed eastwards

He said, ‘Wherever the river flows, all living creatures teeming in it will live. Fish will be very plentiful, for wherever the water goes it brings health, and life teems wherever the river flows.

Along the river, on either bank, will grow every kind of fruit tree with leaves that never wither and fruit that never fails; they will bear new fruit every month, because this water comes from the sanctuary. And their fruit will be good to eat, and the leaves medicinal.’

God is within, it cannot be shaken; God will help it at the dawning of the day. The Lord of hosts is with us: the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

John 2:

Just before the Passover Feast, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the Temple he saw people selling cattle and sheep and pigeons, with money changers sitting at their counting tables

Jesus made a whip out of some cord, then drove the sellers out of the Temple, cattle and sheep as well. He scattered the money changers' coins, knocked their tables over, and said to the pigeon sellers "Take all of this out of here and stop turning my Father's house into a market"

Some religious leaders asked him "What sign can you show us to justify what you have done?"

Jesus answered "Destroy this sanctuary, and in three days I will raise it up".  The leaders replied "It has taken 46 years to build this sanctuary"

But Jesus was speaking of the sanctuary that was his body, and when he rose from the dead, his disciples remembered his words

Job 32-39:

Job's three friends had no more to say. But a young  man named Elihu, decided to join the conversation.

He said to Job "How can you claim to be innocent and yet say that God is persecuting you without cause?"

As Elihu continued his speech, suddenly  the voice of God himself was heard.

God asked Job "Have you ever given orders to the morning for day to begin? Have you ever arranged the stars in the sky?

Was it you who gave all the animals their various powers?
Who do you think you are?"

The young man said "I have kept all these commandments. What else do I need to do?"

Jesus said "If you want to do something really special with your life, go and sell all your possessions, give the money to the poor, then come and follow me as one of my disciples".

When the young man heard these words he went away sad, because he was very rich.

Jesus then said to his disciples

Job 25-31:

I remember how I have always lived as a friend of God: how I helped the poor, the orphan, the dying, the widow, the blind, the lame.

I remember how I made a pact with my eyes, not to linger on any other woman but my wife.

I remember how I have never put my trust in riches or fame. I have always trusted only in the Lord.

My HK Democracy File
(updated)

Student leaders of HK's democracy movement are discussing a possible trip to Beijing next week while APEC is on.  No doubt China will not let them enter the Mainland. And probably, as a result of Beijing pressure, the HK government will not let them leave HK (by blacklisting their ID cards for travel). This whole affair will be an embarrassment to Beijing during APEC

"The Occupy Central movement in Hong Kong is not only proving more durable than anyone imagined. It is uncovering all kinds of aspects of both mainland and local politics and attitudes that have long lain buried under platitudes and wishful thinking"

There's been a noticeable increase in the prison population of several detention centres in HK ....the new arrivals having come from Stanley Prison .....which is being readied for democracy protesters if the situation requires.
But no more than 2,000 protestors can be arrested, because there's no room for more. So, if protestors act in big numbers, HK government has a big problem

Jesus replied "Moses allowed divorce because people were so hard of heart.  But divorce was not God's plan.

So I say to you, anyone who walks out on their partner and marries someone else, is guilty of adultery."

Jesus, please help married people stay together

Yesterday with a visitor from Australia I visited the Admiralty & Mong Kok protest sites. Both sites show signs of becoming more, not less, permanent - despite the great inconvenience they are causing to the wider community. Both sites are now popular tourist attractions for Mainland and overseas visitors

Comments welcome here! Readers are most welcome to post comments and reflections on these readings

Job 20-21:

Zophar then said it was unreasonable for Job to think that his situation was an exception as regards God's justice.

Job replied: " I can't help asking why do wicked people prosper while good people suffer?"

Dear God, please help me understand a little bit more about the mystery of good and evil

Psalm 88:

Lord my God, day and night I call to you for help. Please turn your ear to my cry.

For my soul is filled with evils.
My life is on the brink of the grave.

I am reckoned as one in the tomb.
I have reached the end of my strength.

Will your love be told in the grave? Will your wonders be known in the dark?

Fear surrounds  me like a flood.

All my friends have deserted me.
My only companion is darkness.

Lord, please help people who are in despair

Romans 2:

People become holy in God's sight by doing what is right. Listening to God's Law is not enough. We have to put it into practice in our lives

Non-Jewish people who follow a good conscience and do what is right, have God's Law engraved on their hearts

What matters is not circumcision of the body, but circumcision of the heart. The real Jew is one who is a Jew in his heart

Jesus, help me to love you with all my heart. May my love for you not be just something external, but something real, in my heart

Mark 9:

Jesus' apostle  John, said "Master, we saw a man who is not one of our group casting out devils in your name. Because he was not one of us, we tried to stop him"

Jesus said "You must not stop him. No one who works a miracle in my name is going to speak evil of me. Anyone who is not against us is for us

In fact, even someone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to me, will be rewarded"

Jesus, please help me stop dividing people into "us and them"

Chris McDonnell (Wed UK blogger)

At the start of November
Pope Francis began his address to the Pentecostal bishops visiting him in
Rome by thanking participants for their courage, adding: “Yesterday I was at the door of the synod hall with a Lutheran bishop. I said, ‘You’re a brave man! In a previous age they burned Lutherans here!’”
