Proverbs 9:

Wisdom has built herself a house,
she has erected 7 pillars.

She has sent out her maidservants
to proclaim from the city's heights:

"Come and eat my bread, drink the wine I have prepared.

Leave your foolishness and you will live. Come and walk in the way of wisdom."

Lord, please help us accept your invitation to grow in wisdom

Psalm 99:

The Lord is king. He is great in Sion. His power is seen throughout the world.

 Mark 12:

Jesus sat down in the Temple area and noticed people putting money into a donation box to help the poor

Many rich people put in a lot of money. A poor widow put in two small coins

Jesus said to his disciples  "That poor widow has donated more than all the other people, for they put in money they had left over, but she  put in the only money she had"

Jesus, please make me more generous in helping poor people

Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation.

Happy the man who finds a good wife. She is far beyond the price of pearls.

She looks after her household with care. She works diligently for her family.

Indeed thus shall be blessed
the people who love and honor the Lord.

May the Lord bless you from Zion all the days of your life. May you see your children's children in a happy Jerusalem!

Reflection by Daniel Daring:
Do not bury this talent

Our world is in such a mess, because we have buried our talent, the powerful and transforming message of the Gospel. We have slacked off. We are comfortable in our churches and we do not dare to go to the high streets

Chinese text    Previous reflections

Matthew 25:

Jesus spoke this parable to his disciples: ‘The kingdom of Heaven is like a man on his way abroad who summoned his servants and entrusted his property to them.

To one he gave five talents, to another two, to a third one; each in proportion to his ability. Then he set out.

‘Now a long time after, the master of those servants came back and went through his accounts with them.

The man who had received the five talents came forward bringing five more. “Sir,” he said “you entrusted me with five talents; here are five more that I have made.”’

Jesus, please help me use my gifts and resources to help others

Violence feared as authorities say there is no room for further dialogue with student-led protesters

..surely not a clearance operation during APEC or while Obama is in China....

Today I'm due to be at the High Court - supporting an African inmate's appeal for bail. HC is right above the democracy camp. I'll take my camera, and hopefully have some new photos of DC for this website tomorrow

Four readings
with recordings

Comments welcome here! Readers are most welcome to post comments and reflections on these readings

Proverbs 2:

If you turn your ear to wisdom,
you will discover the knowledge of God.

For God himself is the giver of wisdom. From his mouth come knowledge and discernment.

When wisdom comes into your heart, then prudence and discernment will protect you from evil.

Dear God, source of wisdom, please give us more wisdom

Psalm 94:

O Lord,  Judge of the earth,
how long will the wicked crush the poor?

The wicked say "God does not hear". But can he who made the ear, not hear?

Blessed are those whom the Lord teaches. The Lord gives them peace in troubled times.

When cares increase in my heart,
God's
consolation calms my soul.

Lord, when cares and troubles increase, please  help us to trust in you.

Jesus the Consoler

Romans 6:

Do not let sin control your life. Always remember which team you play for: God's Grace Guys, not Satan's Sin Side

Playing for SSS is a recipe for death. Playing for GGG leads to eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord

Jesus, please help me remember I'm on your team

Today's Gospel

Mark 10:

As  Jesus was leaving Jericho on his way to Jerusalem, many people followed him along the road

Sitting by the road was a man  who had become blind. His name was Bartimaeus ("son of Timaeus").

When he heard that Jesus was going past, he called out "Son of David, have pity on me"

Some people tried to stop him from calling out, but he shouted even more loudly " Son of David, have pity on me"

Jesus stopped and said to him "What do you want me to do for you?"  He replied "Lord, let me see again"

Jesus said to him "Go, your faith has saved you". Immediately his sight returned, and he followed Jesus along the road

Jesus, please heal my blind friend (.. name ..)

What price a piece of stone?
Francis has challenged us to reflect on our own life styles, asking those tasked with the responsibility of care to share their faith by the example they give. There are many instances of people who put people first, whose lives are spent caring for the lives of others. They do not value everything by a monetary price, for their value system is different. It is a living experience of the Sermon on the Mount

US archbishop orders priest to bar pro-reform Irish Redemptorist
“I pointed out that the very issues Flannery raises are those discussed by the bishops and cardinals at the Synod on the Family last week: if these issues can be raised in the Vatican, they can be talked about in a small, little parish in south Minneapolis”

Gladys attended church services one particular Sunday. The sermon seemed to go on forever and many in the congregation fell asleep. After the service, to be social, she walked up to a very sleepy looking gentleman, in an attempt to revive him from his stupor, extended her hand in greeting, and said, "Hello, I'm Gladys Dunn." To this the gentleman replied, "You're not the only one!"   ("I'm glad he's done ...glad he's finished the long sermon at last"
