- a spouse lacking love in a troubled relationship is more at risk to seek love elsewhere.
- Christians lacking love in their own local church are more at risk to be influenced by fringe/radical  groups/sects etc.

Proverbs 30-31:

Every word of God is true and of great value. Do not change or misinterpret God's words.

Do not give way to sexual excess.
Do not give way to drunkenness.

Be the voice of the poor, the unwanted. Uphold the rights of the needy.

Happy the man who finds a good wife. She is far beyond the price of pearls.

She looks after her household with care. She works diligently for her family.

She holds out her hand to the poor. She opens her arms to the needy.

Charm is deceitful, and beauty empty. The woman who is wise is the one to praise.

Lord, thank you for all the wisdom in the Book of Proverbs!

Psalm 112

Happy are people who love and honor the Lord, who take delight in his commands. The children of such people will be blessed.

Such people are a light in the darkness for others. Such people are generous, merciful and just.

They take pity and help those in need. They conduct their affairs with  integrity.

Open-handed they give to the poor. Their justice and goodness will never be forgotten.

Lord, please help me do more for the poor

Romans 15:

Learn hope from the Scriptures, from the example of people who did not give up, and were helped by God

May the God of hope bring you such joy and peace in your faith,
that the power of the Holy Spirit will remove all bounds to hope

Holy Spirit of God, help me understand that no situation in this life is ever hopeless, that you can enlighten even the darkest place

 Mark 15:

Joseph from Arimathaea was a rich man who had become a disciple of Jesus. After Jesus died on Friday, he asked Governor Pilate for Jesus' body.

Joseph wrapped the body in a clean burial cloth and put it in a tomb in a rock cave. He then put a large stone at the cave's entrance.

Mary of Magdala and another woman watched Joseph as he put Jesus' body in the tomb

Jesus in the tomb, please give eternal life to everyone who dies today

Proverbs 29:

Do not boast about tomorrow,
since you do not know what will happen today.

Let others praise you, but do not praise yourself.

Better open reproof than voiceless love.

From one who loves, wounds are well-intentioned. From one who hates, kisses are ominous.

He who admits his faults will prosper. He who confesses and renounces his faults will find mercy.

Mark 15:

Jesus was put on the cross sometime after  9am. From about noon until 3pm there was darkness over all the land

About 3pm Jesus cried out the words of Psalm 22 "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

A little while later he again cried out in a loud voice. Then he died. At that moment the holy curtain in the Temple was torn in two from top to bottom

The leader of the Roman soldiers who crucified Jesus, when he saw how Jesus died, said "Truly this man was a son of God"

Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for the salvation of the world

Isaiah 63:

You, Lord, yourself are our Father, ‘Our Redeemer’ is your ancient name.

Why, Lord, leave us to stray from your ways, and harden our hearts against honoring you?

Psalms 79-80:

O God, the nations have invaded your sacred land, they have profaned your holy temple.
They have made Jerusalem a heap of ruins.

We have become the taunt of our neighbours, the mockery and scorn of those who surround us.

How long, O Lord, will all this last? How long will this sorrow keep going?

Do not hold the guilt of our ancestors against us. If their guilt is somehow influencing our situation now, please give peace and healing to everyone and everything in our  history.

Let the groans of the prisoners come before you. Let your strong arm reprieve those condemned to die.

O Lord, our God, help us and save us. Let your face shine on us and we shall be saved.

Lord, please heal any problems in my family tree

Mark 13:

Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Be on your guard, stay awake, because you never know when the time will come.

It is like a man travelling abroad: he has gone from home, and left his servants in charge, each with his own task; and he has told the doorkeeper to stay awake.

So stay awake, because you do not know when the master of the house is coming:  evening, midnight, cockcrow, dawn. If he comes unexpectedly, he must not find you asleep.

And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake!’

Recording

"Stay awake" here doesn't mean we should not sleep! It means we should stay awake spiritually by trying to live a good life

Proverbs 25-26:

Cloud and wind, but no rain. Such is the person who makes a lot of promises, but doesn't keep them.

Don't over-tax your neighbor's hospitality.

If people who don't like you are hungry or thirsty, give them something to eat or drink. In this way you will shame them into being better people.

Rain comes by the north wind. A ravaged face comes from a backbiting tongue.

An open town, without defences.
Such is a person lacking self-control.

As a dog returns to its vomit, so foolish people return to their folly.

Interfering in the quarrels of other people is like catching a stray dog by the tail.

Uneasy calm prevails in Mong Kok

 Thurs Nov 27

USA: Thanksgiving

Yesterday at Hei Ling Chau Island Correctional Centre, I heard a staff officer say that for the past two months, he has had to leave home one hour earlier than usual in order to get to work on time .... because of the occupy protests disrupting traffic in HK.  Same officer said that for the past two months he has arrived home an hour later than usual, for the same reason. Officer is one of hundreds of thousands who have been suffering hardship because of the occupy movement.

Like most people in HK, the officer is supportive of the protesters' aim: democracy in HK, but very upset at the means the protesters are using: protests that cause hardship to so many people. I too have no more sympathy for the protesters. They have lost me. I feel great admiration for the police who have been put in an impossible situation and have acted 99.% of the time with great restraint.  If the police in recent days have used force to clear the streets it's because of the protesters' unreasonableness in refusing to re-locate to non-hardship-causing venues.

Psalm 107 (a):

O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His great love is without end.

Let them say this, those the Lord has helped, people from east and west, north and south.

Some people wandered in the desert, lost and unable to find their way to safety.

In their hunger and thirst they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and showed them the way to safety.

Let them thank the Lord for his love, for he fills the hungry with good things.

Some people were prisoners in misery and chains, living in darkness and gloom.

In their distress they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and restored their freedom.

Let them thank the Lord for his goodness, for he shatters the iron bars of prisons.

Psalm 107 (b):

Some people sailed to the sea in ships and were caught in terrifying storms.

They cried to the Lord in their need and he calmed the sea and wind.

Let them thank the Lord for his love, for the wonders he does for us.

Whoever is wise should meditate on these things and reflect on the love of the Lord.

Thank you Lord, for your rescuing love

Pilate asked "Why? What has he done wrong?" The crowd shouted all the louder "Crucify him. Crucify him".

Giving in to the crowd, Pilate then ordered Jesus to be scourged and crucified

Peter went to the place where the religious leaders had Jesus on trial.
A young woman in the courtyard of the place said to him "You were with Jesus, the man from Nazareth"

Peter replied "I don't know what you're talking about"

Peter went to the gateway of the place, where the woman saw him again and said to people around her "This man is one of them".
Peter denied it

Not long after this a group of people said to Peter "You are his friend. We can tell by your Galilean accent". Then Peter even more strongly replied "I do not know the man"

At that very moment, a rooster crowed. Peter remembered Jesus' words "Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times".   Peter then wept loudly

Jesus, please help me not to deny you.  Give me courage to say "I am a Christian"

The experience of change

It would seem that when Francis acts in a Christ-like manner, offering compassion and forgiveness, looking at the spirit of the law rather than ruthless adherence to it, seeking to build loving relationships rather than antagonistic positions, he is criticized. But then so was the Nazarene in whose place he offers guidance

True and false reform of the Roman Curia

One Sunday afternoon, the Pastor's wife dropped into an easy chair saying, "Boy! Am I ever tried." Her husband looked over at her & said, "I had to conduct two special services last night, three today, & give a total of five sermons. Why are you so tired ?" "Dearest," she replied, "I had to listen to all of them."
