Song of Songs 8:

Set me like a seal on your heart,
like a seal on your arm.

For love is strong as death.
Love is like a fire, a mighty flame.

No flood can quench love.
No torrents can drown it.

Money cannot buy love.

Lord, please fill my heart with your love

Psalm 124:

"If the Lord had not been on our side", this is Israel's song.

If the Lord had not been on our side when people rose against us, then would they have swallowed us alive when they were angry with us.

Blessed be the Lord who did not let us become a prey for their teeth.

Our life, like a bird, has escaped
from the snare of the hunter.

Indeed the snare has been broken
and we have escaped.

Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth.

Thank you, Lord, for all the times you have rescued me from trouble

1 Corinthians 12:

The Holy Spirit gives us many different gifts

Some people have the gift of wise preaching. Some people have the gift of an extra strong faith.

Some people have the gift of healing sick people.

Some people have other gifts like the power of miracles, prophecy, recognizing spirits, and the ability to speak in tongues

Holy Spirit, please increase your influence in my life. Please give me the gift of (..name..)

Recommended: check these readings early morning, think about them during the day, check them again at night. This habit gives us extra energy, courage, motivation, peace and compassion for each day

Matthew 1:

An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and said

"Joseph, descendant of David,
do not be afraid to live with Mary as your wife.

Her baby has been conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit.
She will give birth to a son.

You must name him 'Jesus' ('God saves') because he will
save his people from their sins."

Joseph took Mary to his home as his wife. She gave birth to a son, Jesus.

Jesus, you are the Saviour of the world

About 3 weeks ago, an African drug trafficker was arrested in Hong Kong. His family in Africa was told (by drug  dealers?) that he had died. Yesterday I had the happy responsibility, through phone and email, of breaking the good news to the family that the man was alive and well, although in detention

Pope's Monday sermon at Mass: (very poor English ... hope Vatican can improve this!)

Pope Francis recalled how “Pius XII freed us from the very heavy cross that was the Eucharistic fast”: “Some of you might remember. You couldn’t even drink a drop of water. And to brush your teeth, it had to be done in such a way that you didn’t swallow the water. But I myself as a young boy went to confession for having made the Communion, because I thought a drop of water had gone in. Is it true or no? It’s true. When Pius XII changed the discipline: ‘Ah, heresy! No! He touched the discipline of the Church.’ So many Pharisees were scandalized. So many. Because Pius XII had acted like Jesus: he saw the need of the people.  Priests said three Masses, the last at one o’clock, after noon, fasting. The discipline of the Church. And these Pharisees [spoke about] ‘our discipline’ – rigid on the outside, but, as Jesus said of them, ‘rotting in the heart,’ weak, weak to the point of rottenness. Gloomy in the heart.”

Song of Songs 5-7:

The bride:
His conversation is sweetness itself, my beloved is totally  lovable. I am my beloved's, and my beloved is mine.

The groom:
You are beautiful, my love,
as beautiful as Jerusalem.

How beautiful are your feet and thighs. The curve of your thighs is like the curve of a necklace.

Your navel is like an exquisite wine glass. Your belly is like a heap of wheat.

Your two breasts are like two baby deer. Your neck is like an ivory tower.

Your eyes are like beautiful water pools. Your nose is like a majestic tower.

How beautiful you are, how charming, my love, my delight.

Lord, please help me understand how much you love me

Psalm 123:

To you have I lifted up my eyes,
you who dwell in the heavens.

My eyes, like the eyes of slaves
on the hand of their lords.

Like the eyes of a servant on the hand of her mistress, so our eyes are on the Lord our God till he show us mercy.

Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy. We are filled with contempt.

Indeed all too full is our soul with the scorn of the rich, with the proud man's disdain.

Lord, please protect poor people
from being exploited by rich people

 Corinthians 11.20:

Concerning the Lord's Supper, this is what I received from the Lord and then taught you:

On the night he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread, broke it and said "This is my body which will be broken for you"

After supper he took a cup and said "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Each time you drink this cup, drink it in memory of me"

Until the Lord comes, therefore, each time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you re-enact the death of the Lord

Jesus, help me understand how bread and wine become your body and blood when Christians celebrate the Eucharist

This is how Jesus came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph.

please help me better understand how you are the Saviour of the world

c.f. Readings for "Advent 3"

Isaiah 61:

The spirit of the Lord has been given to me, for the Lord has anointed me.

He has sent me to bring good news to the poor, to bind up broken hearts, to proclaim liberty to captives, freedom to those in prison, to comfort people who mourn, to replace their sadness with praise.

I exult for joy in the Lord,
my soul rejoices in my God.

For as the earth makes plants to grow, and as a garden makes seeds spring up, so the Lord will make integrity and praise spring up in the sight of the nations.

Lord, please give comfort and courage to people who are sad

Luke 1:

My soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour.

He looks on his servant in her nothingness; henceforth all ages will call me blessed.

The Almighty works marvels for me. Holy his name!

His mercy is from age to age, on those who fear him.

He fills the starving with good things, sends the rich away empty.

He protects Israel, his servant, remembering his mercy.

Lord, may I often use these words of Mary to praise you

1 Thessalonians 5:

Be happy at all times; pray constantly; and for all things give thanks to God, because this is what God expects you to do in Christ Jesus.

Never try to suppress the Spirit or treat the gift of prophecy with contempt; think before you do anything – hold on to what is good and avoid every form of evil.

May the God of peace make you perfect and holy; and may you all be kept safe and blameless, spirit, soul and body, for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. God has called you and he will not fail you.

Jesus, please help me praise you all the time, even at difficult times

John 1:

John the Baptist was sent by God as a witness to the people about the presence of the Word among them

When religious leaders asked John "Who are you?", he replied "I am, as the prophet Isaiah prophesied, a voice crying out: make a straight way for the Lord"

When Jesus came to the river Jordan where John was baptizing, John said "Look, there is the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. He is far more important than I am, because he existed (as the Word) before I was born

I saw the Holy Spirit come down on him like a dove. He will baptize people with the Holy Spirit.  He is the Chosen One of God"

From Everything Is Connected

by George Monbiot

Before humans reached Australia, the continent teemed with great beasts. There was a spiny anteater the size of a pig; a giant herbivore a bit like a wombat, which weighed two tonnes; a marsupial tapir as big as a horse; a ten-foot kangaroo; a marsupial lion with opposable thumbs and a stronger bite than any other known mammal, which I believe was a specialist carnivore of giant kangaroos; a horned tortoise eight feet long; a monitor lizard bigger than the Nile crocodile. Most of them, and many other marvellous creatures, disappeared between 40,000 and 50,000 years ago. At roughly the same time, the dense rainforests which covered much of that continent began to be replaced by the grass and scrubby trees which populate much of the outback today.

A minister told his congregation, "Next week I plan to preach about the sin of lying. To help you understand my sermon, I want you all to read Mark 17." The following Sunday, as he prepared to deliver his sermon, the minister asked for a show of hands. He wanted to know how many had read Mark 17. Every hand went up. The minister smiled and said, "Mark has only 16 chapters. I will now proceed with my sermon on the sin of lying."

2004-12-12 CAS promotion in Luoding. Christmas Card Game in afternoon

A church burned down and the people had no place to hold their day morning service. There was a bar right across the street, so the minister arranged to hold the service there since the bar was normally closed on Sunday morning. The minister's only concern was that the parrot who lived on a perch in the bar would use foul language. The owner of the bar assured the minister that the parrot never used bad language since it was a Baptist parrot. So, Sunday rolls around. The minister walks in and the parrot looks up and says, "Hey, look at that. A new bartender!" A few minutes later, the deacons walk in and the parrot says, "Hey, look at that. New waiters!" Several minutes later, all the parishoners walk in. The parrot looks up and says, "Oh, well, same old customers..."  (Baptists are not supposed to drink alcohol!)

Ecclesiastes 10-11:

Foolish people are lazy,  and careless in speech. Wise people are diligent, and careful in speech.

Young people, rejoice in your youth. Young people, remember your Creator in the days of your youth.

Let everyone remember: our life is short. Don't waste your life. Live life well.

Our days pass quickly and old age is soon at the doorstep.

Old age: when to go uphill is difficult and even walking is not easy.

In all we do, let us love and honor the Lord our God. At the end of our lives on earth, it is to God we will have to give an account of the way we have lived.

Lord, make us know the shortness of our life so that we may have more wisdom in living our lives

Lord, when I'm worried or in trouble, your word revives me and gives me strength.

Lord, keep my eyes from what is false. Bend my heart to your word and not to love of gain.

Yesterday, as part of my preparation for January trip to Tanzania, I visited a large number of Tanzanian inmates in Shek Pik Prison on Lantau Island. I hope to make contact with some of their families in Tanzania. The inmates told me that travelling in Tanzania is very safe ....except if you want to use your mobile phone while in a mini-bus when it is going through an area crowded with pedestrians, many of whom are trying to sell things through the windows to passengers. Make sure to shut the window before using your mobile ..... or your mobile might disappear!

Four readings
with recordings

Comments welcome here! Readers are most welcome to post comments and reflections on these readings

Ecclesiastes 8-9:

I see injustice in the world: good people are treated badly; bad people are treated well.

I do know, however, that good people are in the special care of God.

We must try to be happy as much as we can. We must try to make the most of our lives.

Spend your life with the woman you love. Whatever work you have to do, do it well.

Lord, please help me to be optimistic and cheerful

Psalm 118:

Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love has no end.

Let the sons of Israel say: "His love has no end."

Let those who honor the Lord say:
"His love has no end."

It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.

I was falling, falling, falling, but the Lord was my helper.

The Lord is my strength and my song. He is my saviour.

The Lord's right hand has triumphed. His right hand has raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live and recount all his deeds.

The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes.

This day was made by the Lord.
We rejoice and are glad.

Lord, we give thanks to you, for you are good. Your love has no end

1 Corinthians 3:

Apollos and I are servants who brought the faith to you. I did the planting, Apollos did the watering, but God made things grow

You are God's building. By God's grace, I  laid the foundation, the only foundation there can be: Jesus Christ

On that foundation you can build a house with good or poor materials. At the end of your life, your building will be judged by God

Jesus, you are the foundation of my life. Help me build a house with good material (= good deeds)

Luke 1:

As soon as she could and as quickly as she could, Mary went to Elizabeth's home in the hills near Jerusalem

As soon as Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby in Elizabeth's womb jumped, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit

Elizabeth said to Mary "Of all women, you are the most blessed,
and blessed is the baby in your womb.  Why should I be honored with a visit from the mother of my Lord?  Blessed are you for believing God's promise"

Mary, blessed are you among women,  and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus
