Sirach
4-5: Some people are all talk and no action. Some people are lions at home but sheep in society. Do not give your heart to money. Do not let passion rule your life. Be quick to listen, but slow to speak. Keep your temper under control. Lord, please help me to be kind and sincere |
Psalm
134: who stand in the house of the Lord, Lift up your hands to heaven and bless the Lord through the night. May the Lord bless you from Zion, he who made both heaven and earth. Lord, please protect my
family tonight and every night

When this mortal nature has put on immortality, then the words of Scripture will come true: "Death has been defeated. Death, where is your victory? Death, where is your sting?" Never give up, dear friends, never admit defeat. Keep on working at the Lord's work always. Know that, in the Lord, no work is in vain Jesus, please give me more faith to "keep going"

Luke 4.1-13: Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. For 40 days he ate nothing, and was tempted by the Devil The Devil said "If you are the Son of God, turn a stone into bread". Jesus replied "Scripture says we do not live on bread alone" The Devil took him to a high place and showed
him all the kingdoms of the world. "Worship me and they will all be
yours" he said. Then the Devil took him to the top of the Temple in Jerusalem and said "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down and let the angels protect you" Jesus replied "Scripture says we must not
put the Lord our God to the test". The Devil then left
him |

Sirach 1-3: All wisdom comes from God. Love for God is the source of wisdom. If you desire wisdom, keep the Lord's commandments, in private as well as in public. Keep the
commandment to honor your parents. Support your father in his old age. Even if his mind should fail, show him kindness. Do not despise him in your health and strength. Be gentle in the way you live your life. The greater you are, the more humbly you should behave. Dear
God, please help me always respect and honor my parents |
Psalm
133 It is like precious oil upon the head, It is like the dew of Hermon which falls on the heights of Zion. For there the Lord gives his blessing, Dear Lord, please help all the peoples of the world to live as one family, in unity.

Christ has been raised from the dead, the first to rise of all who have died Death came through one man, Adam, and rising from the dead has come through one man, Jesus Just as all people die because of Adam, so all people can live because of Christ Jesus, may all people have eternal life

Luke 3.15-22:
John the Baptist said to the people "I
baptize you with water, but someone more powerful than I will baptize you
with the Holy Spirit. Jesus then came and was baptized by John. While Jesus was praying after his baptism, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit came down on him in the shape of a dove. And a voice came from heaven "You are my Son, the Beloved. My favor rests on you" Jesus, Beloved Son, please baptize me with your Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, please increase your influence in my life

c.f. Readings for Feast of Epiphany Isaiah
60: The nations come to your light and kings to your dawning brightness. People from other lands are coming to you, bringing gold and incense and singing the praise of the Lord. No more will the sun give you
daylight,
nor moonlight shine on you, for the Lord himself will be your
everlasting light. Lord Jesus, you are the light of the world. Please give more light to my life.
|
Psalm 72: O Lord, please bless the king, May the mountains bring forth peace for the people, and the hills, justice. The kings of Sheba and Seba bring him gifts. All nations will serve him. He will save the poor when they cry for help, and the needy who are helpless. He will have pity on the weak May every tribe be blessed in him.
May every nation bless his name.

You have probably heard how I have been entrusted by God with the grace he meant for you, and that it was by a revelation that I was given the knowledge of the mystery. This mystery that has now been revealed through the Spirit to his holy apostles and prophets was unknown to any men in past generations. It means that pagans now share the same inheritance, that they are parts of the same body, and that the same promise has been made to them, in Jesus Christ, through the gospel.

Matthew 2.1-12 Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem, Some months after Jesus' birth, They said "Where is the infant king
of the Jews? King Herod felt threatened by this news. So Herod sent the wise men to Bethlehem, The wise men headed for Bethlehem, guided by
the star. The wise men fell to their knees and honored
the child. Then they returned to their own country by a
different way, Jesus, help me to honor you like the wise men |

I am now in
Tanzania, (Due to go to Malawi midday today until about January 7. No mobile in Malawi but will try to check email each day) |
Daily photo reports |
Unlike HK, Australia and most parts of the world, Tanzania and many other African countries have virtually no government social services: zero help for kindergarten, primary and secondary fees, zero help for handicapped people, zero help for medical care etc. This is especially severe for families whose main bread winner is in prison in HK. I am trying to help such families. Today I even asked a local priest if Catholic schools could offer a discount. Short answer was "no". So I'm trying to use funds given me by kind HK donors ....but to be honest ....after only 5 out of some 30 families those funds are almost all used up. I have 25 families to go. If any kind readers anywhere would like to help, I'd love to hear from you. |

Wisdom
10-19: Wise people see God in the beauty of creation. Foolish people are blind to God's presence in creation. Wise people ponder God's goodness and kindness. Wise people try to be good and kind to other people. Lord, please help me see and imitate your goodness and kindness |
Psalm
130: If you, O Lord, should record our guilt, Lord, who would survive? But with you is found
forgiveness. My soul is waiting for the Lord. I count on his word. My soul is longing for the Lord, more than watchman for the daybreak. With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption. Israel indeed he will redeem from all its iniquity. Lord, please forgive me for all the bad things I have done

Wisdom 8-9: From my youth I sought and loved Wisdom. I prayed for Wisdom like this: Grant me Wisdom who was with you when you made the world. May she teach me what is right, so that I may be a good ruler. Lord, please give wisdom to all government leaders, as you gave wisdom to King Solomon |
Psalm
128: By the labor of your hands you shall eat. your wife like a fruitful vine in the heart of
your house; Indeed thus shall be blessed the people who love and honor the Lord. May the Lord bless you from Zion all the days
of your life. Dear Lord, may all married people live to see their children's children

I am the least of the apostles. In fact, since I persecuted the Church of God, I hardly deserve the name apostle But by God's grace I am what I am, and the grace that he gave me has not been fruitless On the contrary, I, or rather the grace of God in my heart, have worked harder than any of the others, preaching the same message that they preach Jesus, may your grace in me be more fruitful

Luke 3.1-6: In the 15th year of the Roman Emperor Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Herod was ruler of Galilee and during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, God's message entered the heart of John son of Zechariah in the wilderness John went through the whole Jordan River area proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins This had been foretold by the prophet Isaiah
when he said
"A voice cries in the wilderness:
Prepare a way for the Lord"

When the appointed time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born a subject of the Law, to redeem the subjects of the Law, and to enable us to be adopted as children of God, brothers and sisters of his Son The proof that we are children is that God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts: the Spirit that cries "Abba, Father" Jesus, help me understand how I have been

Wisdom
6-7: Rulers, if you want to govern successfully, seek Wisdom and she will guide your decisions. A wise ruler is a blessing for his people. The more wise people there are, the better our world will be. When I, Solomon, became a ruler, I prayed, and the spirit of Wisdom came to me. Lord, please give me the gift of Wisdom |
Psalm
127: If the Lord does not watch over the city, in vain does the watchman keep vigil. Success comes not from earlier rising or from
going later to rest, Success is from the Lord who blesses the womb of his beloved while she sleeps. Truly, children are a gift from the Lord, a blessing, the fruit of the womb. Lord, many people these days
don't want children. Please help such people understand that children are
a blessing

Let me remind you of the basic facts of the
Good News: He appeared to Peter, then to the other apostles, then to more than 500 of the believers - most of whom are still alive. Then he appeared to James and the other disciples Last of all he appeared to me. I was like an un-expected child Jesus, I have not yet seen you, but I believe in you and I love you
|
John
1. 1-14: The Word was the source of life for all creatures The Word became a man, and lived among us. We saw his glory, full of grace and truth Many people did not recognize and did not accept the Word.
But to everyone who did accept him, Jesus, please help me understand how you are the Word-made-flesh |

Two recent stories November
2014: An Indonesian domestic worker in HK, after reading
the Indonesian edition of Dr Jesus, found that her hearing problem went
away. Her testimony here in email she sent: December 2014: A 57 year old Vietnamese inmate at a HK women's prison, not a Christian, has never prayed in her life, after reading Indonesian edition of Dr Jesus said to herself "this Jesus guy, he gets things done!" So she prayed for her 30 year old paralysed son who had been bed-ridden for the past ten years. A couple of months later she received a letter from Vietnam: "your son is ....back at work!" |
