Sirach 4-5:

Water puts out a fire. Almsgiving makes up for sins. Do not refuse to help a poor person.

Some people are all talk and no action. Some people are lions at home but sheep in society.

Do not give your heart to money. Do not let  passion rule your life.

Be quick to listen, but slow to speak. Keep your temper under control.

Lord, please help me to be kind and sincere

Psalm 134:

O come, bless the Lord, all you who serve the Lord,

who stand in the house of the Lord,
in the courts of the house of our God.

Lift up your hands to heaven and bless the Lord through the night.

May the Lord bless you from Zion, he who made both heaven and earth.

Lord, please  protect my family tonight and every night

1 Cor 15.54-58:

When this mortal nature has put on immortality, then the words of Scripture will come true: "Death has been defeated. Death, where is your victory? Death, where is your sting?"

Never give up, dear friends, never admit defeat. Keep on working at the Lord's work always. Know that, in the Lord, no work is in vain

Jesus, please give me more faith  to "keep going"

 Luke 4.1-13:

Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. For 40 days he ate nothing, and was tempted by the Devil

The Devil said "If you are the Son of God, turn a stone into bread". Jesus replied "Scripture says we do not live on bread alone"

The Devil took him to a high place and showed him all the kingdoms of the world. "Worship me and they will all be yours" he said.
Jesus replied "Scripture says we must worship only God"

Then the Devil took him to the top of the Temple in Jerusalem and said "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down and let the angels protect you"

Jesus replied "Scripture says we must not put the Lord our God to the test". The Devil then left him

Jesus,  protect  us from the Devil and all evil

Sirach 1-3

All wisdom comes from God. Love for God is the source of wisdom.

If you desire wisdom, keep the Lord's commandments, in private as well as in public.

Keep the commandment to honor your parents.
Respect for your father will atone for your sins. Honor for your mother will gain you blessings.

Support your father in his old age. Even if his mind should fail, show him kindness. Do not despise him in your health and strength.

Be gentle in the way you live your life. The greater you are, the more humbly you should behave.

Dear God, please help me always respect and honor my parents

My recording of this reading

Psalm 133

How good and how pleasant it is when people live in unity.

It is like precious oil upon the head,
running down upon the beard.

It is like the dew of Hermon which falls on the heights of Zion.

For there the Lord gives his blessing,
life for ever.

Dear Lord, please help all the peoples of the world  to live as one family, in unity.

Isaiah 60:
Arise, shine out, for your light has come.
The glory of the Lord is rising on you, though the rest of the world is still in darkness.

The nations come to your light and kings to your dawning brightness.

People from other lands are coming to you, bringing gold and incense and singing the praise of the Lord.

No more will the sun give you daylight, nor moonlight shine on you, for the Lord himself will be your everlasting light.
Then your days of mourning will be ended.

Lord Jesus, you are the light of the world. Please give more light to my life.

The kings of Sheba and Seba bring him gifts. All nations will serve him.

He will save the poor when they cry for help, and the needy who are helpless.

He will have pity on the weak
and save the lives of the poor.

May every tribe be blessed in him. May every nation bless his name.

Ephesians 3.2-6:

You have probably heard how I have been entrusted by God with the grace he meant for you, and that it was by a revelation that I was given the knowledge of the mystery.

This mystery that has now been revealed through the Spirit to his holy apostles and prophets was unknown to any men in past generations.

It means that pagans now share the same inheritance, that they are parts of the same body, and that the same promise has been made to them, in Jesus Christ, through the gospel.

Matthew 2.1-12

Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem,
during the reign of King Herod.

Some months after Jesus' birth,
several  wise men from the East came to Jerusalem.

They said  "Where is the infant king of the Jews?
We saw his star as it rose and we have come to offer him honor."

King Herod felt threatened by this news.
He knew from the Scriptures  that the promised Saviour would be born in Bethlehem.

So Herod sent the wise men to Bethlehem,
pretending that he too would like to offer honor to the child.

The wise men headed for Bethlehem, guided by the star.
The star filled them with joy.
The star stopped over the place where the child was.

The wise men fell to their knees and honored the child.
They offered him gifts of gold, incense and myrrh.

Then they returned to their own country by a different way,
having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod.

Jesus,  help me to honor you like the wise men

 The God of All Nations
What Matthew invites his community to do with this story is to explore what the Magi’s quest was focused on. It was illumination, an epiphany of divine intervention. They were searchers for wisdom and so it is not surprising that their presence supports the key Wisdom (Sophia in Greek) theme of the first Gospel. They were symbols of an outside world desperately in need of enlightenment and guidance

Unlike HK, Australia and most parts of the world, Tanzania and many other African countries have virtually no government social services: zero help for kindergarten, primary and secondary fees, zero help for handicapped people, zero help for medical care etc. This is especially severe for families whose main bread winner is in prison in HK.

I am trying to help such families. Today I even asked a local priest if Catholic schools could offer a discount. Short answer was "no".

So I'm trying to use funds given me by kind HK donors ....but to be honest ....after only 5 out of some 30 families those funds are almost all used up. I have 25 families to go.

If any kind readers anywhere would like to help, I'd love to hear from you.

Wisdom 10-19:

Wisdom has been present in the world since the beginning of time. Wisdom has always been a close friend of good people.

Wise people see God in the beauty of creation. Foolish people are blind to God's presence in creation.

Wise people ponder God's goodness and kindness. Wise people  try to be good and kind to other people.

Lord, please help me see and imitate your goodness and kindness

Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord.
Lord, hear my voice.

But with you is found forgiveness.
For this we revere you.

My soul is waiting for the Lord. I count on his word.

My soul is longing for the Lord, more than watchman for the daybreak.

Wisdom 8-9:

From my youth I sought and loved Wisdom.

Wisdom teaches us temperance, prudence, justice and fortitude.

I prayed for Wisdom like this:

"God of our ancestors and Lord of mercy, in Wisdom you made all things.

Grant me Wisdom who was with you when you made the world. May she teach me what is right, so that I may be a good ruler.

Lord, please give wisdom to all government leaders, as you gave wisdom to King Solomon

O blessed are those who love the Lord and walk in his ways.

By the labor of your hands you shall eat.
You will be happy and prosper:

your wife like a fruitful vine in the heart of your house;
your children like shoots of the olive, around your table.

Indeed thus shall be blessed the people who love and honor the Lord.

May the Lord bless you from Zion all the days of your life.
May you see your children's children in a happy Jerusalem!

But by God's grace I am what I am, and the grace that he gave me has not been fruitless

On the contrary, I, or rather the grace of God in my heart, have worked harder than any of the others, preaching the same message that they preach

John went through the whole Jordan River area proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins

Wisdom 6-7:

Listen, rulers of the nations, govern with justice, for you will be judged by the Lord.

Rulers, if you want to govern successfully, seek Wisdom and she will guide your decisions.

A wise ruler is a blessing for his people. The more wise people there are, the better our world will be.

When I, Solomon, became a ruler,
I prayed for Wisdom.

I prayed, and the spirit of Wisdom came to me.

Lord, please give me the gift of Wisdom

Psalm 127:

If the Lord does not build the house, in vain do its builders labor.

If the Lord does not watch over the city, in vain does the watchman keep vigil.

Success comes not from earlier rising or from going later to rest,
but from the Lord's blessing.

Success is from the Lord who blesses the womb of  his beloved while she sleeps.

Truly, children are a gift from the Lord, a blessing, the fruit of the womb.

Lord, many people these days don't want children. Please help such people understand that children are a blessing

1 Corinthians 15.1-8:

Let me remind you of the basic facts of the Good News:

Christ died for our sins. He was buried. He was raised to life on the third day

He appeared to Peter, then to the other apostles, then to more than 500 of the believers - most of whom are still alive. Then he appeared to James and the other disciples

Last of all he appeared to me. I was like an un-expected child

Jesus, I have not yet seen you, but I believe in you and I love you

John 1. 1-14:

From all eternity the Word existed.
The Word was with God the Father. The Word was God the Son

The Word was the source of life for all creatures

The Word became a man, and lived among us. We saw his glory, full of grace and truth

Many people did not recognize and did not accept the Word.

But to everyone who did accept him,
he gave power to become children of God

Jesus, please help me understand how you are the Word-made-flesh

At the turn of the year
Outside on the pavement a man sat, crossed-legged, his back against the wall. Tattered clothes hung loose about his frame, a sallow, unshaven face under ragged hair, a middle aged man begging on the streets of
London in the days before Christmas.

December 2014:  A 57 year old Vietnamese inmate at a HK women's prison, not a Christian, has never prayed in her life, after reading Indonesian edition of Dr Jesus said to herself "this Jesus guy, he gets things done!" So she prayed for her 30 year old paralysed son who had been bed-ridden for the past ten years. A couple of months later she received a letter from Vietnam: "your son is ....back at work!"
