I am now in Dar Es Salaam, the capital of Tanzania. This YouTube of Dar Es Salaam shows St Joseph's Cathedral where I usually go each day.

As I was walking to the cathedral yesterday I saw a rare sight: a man smoking. It's a pleasure being in a city where almost no one smokes!

Jesus, please give Pope Francis a safe trip to Sri Lanka (Jan 13-14) and to the Philippines (Jan 15-19)

Sirach 20-23

People who foolishly talk too much become unpopular. Wise people know when to speak and how much to speak.

The talk of a foolish person is like a load on a journey. The talk of a wise person is a pleasure to hear.

Lord, do not give me proud eyes. Do not let  lust take control of my life.

Do not let my mouth use coarse and foul language.

Help me avoid sins of impurity, alone or with others.

Lord, please give me the wisdom to avoid bad talk and bad actions

Psalms 140-143

Lord, save me from people who do evil, you who do justice for the needy.

I have no way out of this situation. And no one wants to help me.

Lord, I beg you tonight to make haste and give me an answer, for my spirit fails within me.

In the morning let me know your love, for I put my trust in you.

Lord, please help people who are in big trouble

2 Cor 8.9 - 9.7

Remember how generous the Lord Jesus was. He was rich, but he became poor for our sake, to make us rich

So we also should help people who are poor. If we have extra, we should help people who don't have enough

Maybe some day, the same poor people will be rich, and we will be poor, and they will help us

And don't forget, God loves a cheerful giver

Jesus, help me do more to help poor people

Recommended: check these readings early morning, think about them during the day, check them again at night. This habit gives us extra energy, courage, motivation, peace and compassion for each day

 Luke 5.12-16

In one town that Jesus went to, a leper fell on his face and pleaded "Sir, if you want to, you can heal me"

Jesus stretched out  his hand, touched him, and said "Of course I want to!  Be healed!"   And the leprosy left him at once

Jesus' reputation continued to grow.  Large crowds gathered to hear him speak and to have their sicknesses cured. But afterwards Jesus would always go to a quiet  place where he could be alone and pray

Jesus, please help me understand that you want sick people to be healed

Lift at hotel where I am staying in Dar Es Salaam is very clever ...it has all sorts of messages I've never before heard in a lift. e.g. two days ago some people on the 3rd floor were a little slow getting out of the lift (with luggage), so when the lift arrived on my floor it said, just like a HK Metro announcement: "Sorry to keep you waiting"!

Father, you, your ministry and your sick list have always been in my prayers. I have also learnt from you to pray for prisoners in different parts of China, for people in the poorest parts of the world and for those living in troubled areas. I get to pick up rubbish for blessing Pope Francis too. You've made me feel so much connected with the rest of the world.

Sirach 15-19:

Wisdom makes us happy. Foolishness makes us sad. Humility is the pathway to wisdom.

We are free to choose good or evil, wisdom or foolishness.
To live a good life is something everyone can try to do.

If we have done something wrong, we must ask pardon of the Lord. We must turn our back on  wrongdoing and face towards the Lord.

Do not indulge in luxurious living.
Too much wine and luxury corrupts the heart.

Avoid gossip and slander. Be someone who can keep a secret.

The way people dress tells you what work they do. The way people walk also tells a lot about them.

Lord, please help me turn my back on wrongdoing. Help me face towards you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 139:

O Lord, you search me and you know me. You know my resting and my rising.

You know exactly what's going on in my life, all my ways are an open book to you.

Before ever a word is on my tongue, You know, O Lord, what I'm going to say.

Your knowledge is beyond my understanding,
too high, beyond my reach.

It was you who created my being,
knit me together in my mother's womb.

I thank you for the wonder of my life,
for the wonders of all your creation.

Lord, thank you for the gift of life.  Please help me follow the path to eternal life

2 Cor 5.14-19:

The love of Christ is like a tsunami. It overwhelms us and sweeps us away
when we remember how Jesus died for everyone

God, through Christ, has repaired his friendship with humanity. We must spread the news of this reconciliation

"And when I think, that God his Son not sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in"
- from the song "How Great Thou Art"

Luke 5.1-11

One day when Jesus was standing near the Lake of Gennesaret, with people pressing round him listening to the word of God, he saw two fishing boats near the bank

He got into one boat, it belonged to Simon Peter, and taught people from the boat, away from the shore a little distance

When he'd finished speaking he said to Simon "Go out further to deep water and use your nets for a catch of fish"

Simon replied "Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but if you say so I'll lower the nets"

They soon caught so many fish that the nets began to tear. They called to their friends in the second boat to come and help. Both boats were soon filled with fish

Peter fell at Jesus' knees and said "Leave me, Lord, I am a sinful man", for he was overcome by the catch they had made, as were James and John who were his partners

But Jesus said to Simon "Don't be afraid. From now on, you will be fishers of people".  Simon and his friends then left everything to follow Jesus

Jesus,  bless and protect  all "fishers of people"

c.f. Readings for Baptism of Jesus

Isaiah 42.1-7

Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom my soul delights.

I have endowed him with my spirit that he may bring true justice to the nations.

He does not cry out or shout aloud. He does not extinguish the wavering flame.

I have called him to serve the cause of right, to open the eyes of the blind,
to free captives from prison".

Jesus, please help me understand how these words are about you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 29

O give the Lord, you sons of God,  give the Lord glory and power; give the Lord the glory of his name. Adore the Lord in his holy court.

The Lord’s voice resounding on the waters, the Lord on the immensity of waters; the voice of the Lord, full of power, the voice of the Lord, full of splendour.

Heavenly Father whose voice was heard at the baptism of Jesus, may we hear your voice in the sounds of creation

Recording

Acts 10.34-38

Peter addressed Cornelius and his household:

You must have heard about the recent happenings in Judea; about Jesus of Nazareth and how he began in Galilee, after John had been preaching baptism.

God had anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and because God was with him, Jesus went about doing good and curing all who had fallen into the power of the devil.’

Jesus, please help us to do good in our world

Recording

Luke 3.15-22

John the Baptist said to the people "I baptize you with water, but someone more powerful than I will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.
I am not fit to undo the strap of the powerful one's sandals"

Jesus then came and was baptized by John. While Jesus was praying after his baptism, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit came down on him in the shape of a dove.

And a voice came from heaven "You are my Son, the Beloved. My favor rests on you"

Jesus, Beloved Son, please baptize me with your Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, please increase your influence in my life

My email: jdwomi@gmail.com

Before leaving HK for Tanzania, several times I emailed and once I phoned a conference centre run by the church....to try to book a room for my stay in Dar Es Salaam. The phone call asked "please check your email!"  On arrival I got a taxi to the centre ...only to find it was very run down and for the time being not taking guests. The kind taxi driver then recommended a hotel in the city ....and what a blessing that was. The church centre is in a far away location. The hotel is central, just near the cathedral where I can attend daily Mass. Hotel is also convenient for families of prisoners in HK to meet me. Church centre not so. Hotel is also one minute walk to Vodacom (where my USB modem frequenty needs to see doctor), Western Union and Tigo.

What's Tigo? Tigo is one of the main telephone companies which people use to deposit their money. Another blessing: a few days before leaving HK I saw on the website of a Tz paper that credit card theft is rife in Tz and people are turning away from banks and using telephone companies ....so I knew what to do when I arrived.

And a third blessing I'd like to acknowledge: originally I'd planned to travel by bus either to or from Malawi ...to see more of the countries. But once I realised I needed as much time as possible to see prisoners' families in Tanzania, I decided to fly to and from Malawi. I wasn't sure how long I would stay in Malawi, so I planned to get a return ticket after arrival there ....only to find there were no direct flights for nearly a week after the day I needed (Jan 8). No direct flights were listed on the air companies and travel agency sites ...but then...on Google I found a flight on Jan 8 itself, by Malawian Airlines. Flight was added to schedule only a month or two ago, and MA's website had not been updated.
As Cardinal Newman once said ....many co-incidences can be regarded as a sign of God's providence. Thank you Lord!

Sirach 12-14:

No good will come to a person who persists in evil. No good will come to a person who refuses to help the poor.

In prosperity, you cannot always be sure who is a true friend, but in adversity, you can be sure who is not a friend.

Greed causes a personality to wither.
The pursuit of wisdom causes a personality to blossom.

Lord, please give me the wisdom to be kind and to avoid greed

My recording of this reading

Psalm 138:

I thank you, Lord, with all my heart.
You have heard the words of my mouth.

With the angels I will bless you. I will adore you in your holy temple.

I thank you for your faithfulness and love
which are far above what we can understand.

On the day I called you answered. You increased the strength of my soul.

All earth's kings shall thank you when they hear the words of your mouth.

They shall sing of the Lord's ways:
"How great is the glory of the Lord!"

Though I walk in the midst of affliction, you give me life and frustrate my foes.

Your love, O Lord, is eternal. Do not abandon us whom you have made.

Lord, when we remember how much you love us and help us, every day of the year is a Thanksgiving Day

Recording

2 Cor 4.8 - 5.1:

We are in difficulties on all sides, but never cornered.
We see no answer to our problems, but never despair

Even though our bodies are aging and decaying, our hearts are renewed day by day

Our troubles seem great now, but they don't stand comparison with the eternal glory coming soon

When the temporary tent that we live in here on earth is folded up, we will move to an everlasting house built by God for us in heaven

Jesus, help me remember Heaven - especially when life gets tough

Recording

Luke 4.38-44:

Jesus went to the home of Simon Peter. Simon's mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever. Jesus was asked to help her. He bent over her, rebuked the fever and it left her. She immediately got up and served her guests

After the Sabbath finished at sunset, everyone who had sick friends brought them to Jesus. Laying his hands on each of them, he healed them

The next morning Jesus got up early and went to a lonely place to pray.  People found him and asked him not to leave the area. But he replied "I must proclaim the Good News of the kingdom of God to other towns too, because that is what I was sent to do"

Jesus,  heal my friend ... (name)... who is sick

Sirach 10-11:

As the magistrate is, so will his officials be. As the governor is, so will be the inhabitants of his city.

What has dust and ashes to pride itself on? A king today is a corpse tomorrow.

Do not praise a person for good looks, nor dislike anyone for appearance.

Psalm 137:

By the rivers of Babylon we sat and cried, remembering Zion. On the poplars that grew there we hung up our harps.

For it was there that they asked us, our captors, for songs.
"Sing to us", they said, "one of Zion's songs".

O how could we sing the song of the Lord on alien soil?

To the God of heaven give thanks,
for his great love is without end.

We praise you, Lord, for your great love is without end

2 Cor 1.1-10

From Paul, appointed by God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and from Timothy, one of the brothers, to the church of God at Corinth

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
a gentle Father and the God of all consolation. He comforts us in all our sorrows so that we can comfort others in their sorrows

The recent persecutions I experienced made me think I would not survive. This has taught me to rely not on myself but only on God for help

God saved me from being killed. My hope is he will continue to save me

Jesus, please help people who are in danger of being killed today

Luke 4.23-30

People in the prayer hall rejected Jesus. "Who does he think he is?" they asked. "He's just the son of Joseph"

Jesus replied "No prophet is ever accepted in his own country"

The angry people then took Jesus by force to the edge of the hill on which  Nazareth  was built. They planned to throw him down the cliff.

But Jesus escaped from them and went away

Jesus, please forgive people who reject you.
Please help them accept you

At school yesterday where I did "The Wheels on the Bus" in one classroom, just after I said "Goodbye" to the children, and they were starting to say "Goodbye", one of the local cows outside the window let out a bellowing "Moo" as her "Goodbye"

Sirach 6-7

Let your acquaintances be many, but your advisers one in a thousand.

A faithful friend is a sure shelter. People who love and honor the Lord, will find a faithful friend.

From your youngest days, seek wisdom.
If you love listening, you will find wisdom.

Stretch out your hand to help poor people. Console people who are sad. Visit the sick.

In everything you do, remember the purpose of life, and you will avoid evil.

Dear Lord, please help young people to seek wisdom

Psalm 135:

Praise the name of the Lord, praise him, servants of the Lord.

Praise the Lord for he is good. Sing a psalm to his name for he is loving.

I know the Lord is great. He does whatever he wills in heaven, on earth, in the seas.

Pagan idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands.

They have mouths but they cannot speak. They have eyes but they cannot see.

Sons of Israel, do not trust in useless idols. Sons of Aaron, trust only in our Creator and Lord.

Dear Lord, please help people who worship idols to know and love you

1 Cor 16.5-24

I hope to visit you after I have been to Macedonia.

I will stay at Ephesus until Pentecost, because an important door has opened for my work, despite opposition

Be brave and strong. Let everything be done in love

The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you

Jesus, help me be brave and strong, like Paul

Luke 4.14-22

Jesus, with the power of the Spirit in him, returned to Galilee. He taught in local prayer halls. His reputation spread

He came to his home town of Nazareth and went to the prayer hall on the Sabbath day as he usually did

He stood up and read these words from the prophet Isaiah:
"The spirit of the Lord has been given to me. He has sent me to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to prisoners, to give sight to the blind, to set the downtrodden free"

Jesus then sat down and said to the people in the prayer hall "These words from Isaiah are being fulfilled today even as you listen"

Jesus, please help me be more open to the power of your Spirit. O Holy Spirit, please increase your influence in my life

Epiphany, a time of realization
From the time of that first Epiphany to our present era so much has changed. Our individual responsibility is enormous as we continue our journey.  Let us care for each other on the way

2005-01-07 Visit to Ricci Centre for school-less children by 2003 CAS teacher Aron, from Australia

A common problem in Malawi, as in Australia: flies.
Which is why food served to hotel guests is covered with plastic.
But yesterday morning at breakfast the place where I am staying went a step further: they had covered the top of my glass of cordial (in lieu of orange juice....to which I've been adding water). But I didn't notice the plastic, so .... (please use imagination to finish the story)
