Today I am in Tanzania's 2nd largest city, Mwanza - at bottom of Lake Victoria on map at left ...and due to meet  families of inmates in HK prisons.

Last night one of the Jesuit fathers whose hospitality I am enjoying in Mwanza told me he heard my BBC interview a few days ago. Only link I can find is this one (in Swahili). If anyone can find the audio interview in English, please let me know (jdwomi@gmail.com ). Aim of interview was to alert people to danger of drug trafficking to HK/China/Macau

Sirach 38-39

All healing is a gift of God. To obtain healing:  pray to the Lord, ask forgiveness for sin,
then follow the doctor's advice.

Mourn for the dead  and honor their graves, but do not let your heart be controlled by grief.

Ordinary working people have little time for study. But the Lord blesses everyone who studies wisdom.

Lord, please heal my friend (..name..) who is sick

Psalm 147

Praise the Lord for he is good. Sing to our God for he is loving. To him our praise is due.

The Lord builds up Jerusalem and brings back Israel's exiles.

He heals the broken-hearted and binds up all their wounds. The Lord raises the lowly, and humbles the wicked.

He fixes the number of the stars. He calls each one by name.

Our Lord is great and almighty. His wisdom can never be measured.

He covers the heavens with clouds. He prepares rain for the earth, making mountains sprout with grass and with plants to serve our needs.

His delight is not in horses nor his pleasure in warriors' strength.

The Lord delights in those who love and honor him, in those who wait for his love.

It is right and fitting to praise and love you, Lord our Creator

Galatians 2.11-14

Not long after this, when Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, since he was in the wrong

He had been accustomed to eating with non-Jews, but when some friends of James arrived - people who insisted that all believers should be circumcised - he kept away from the non-Jews

When I saw that Peter was not respecting the true meaning of the Good News, I said to him in front of everyone "You have no right to make non-Jews adopt Jewish customs"

Jesus, help me understand that it's sometimes ok to criticize top Christian leaders

Recommended: check these readings early morning, think about them during the day, check them again at night. This habit gives us extra energy, courage, motivation, peace and compassion for each day

 Luke 6.20-26

Jesus said to his disciples : "Blessed are you who are poor: yours is the kingdom of God.
Blessed are you who are hungry: you shall be satisfied.
Blessed are you who weep now: you shall be happy

Blessed are you when people hate you because of me:
your reward will be great in heaven

But alas for you who are rich: your consolation is only in this world.
Alas for you who have plenty to eat: you shall go hungry.
Alas for you who laugh now: you shall mourn and weep"

Jesus, please help me to give more time and importance to the things that really matter

Sirach 35-37

Be generous as the Lord has been generous to you.
Be cheerful when you make a gift to the Lord.

The humble person's prayer pierces the clouds, so love the Lord with a humble heart.

If a property has no fence, it will be plundered. If a man has no wife, he is like a boat without an anchor.

Be careful when you consult other people.
After all consultation, follow the advice of your own heart.

Lord, please give me a cheerful and humble heart

My recording of this reading

Psalm 146

My soul, give praise to the Lord. I will praise the Lord all my days.

Put no trust in princes, in mortal men in whom there is no help.

Take their breath, they return to clay
and their plans that day come to nothing.

They are happy who are helped by Jacob's God, whose hope is in the Lord our God, who alone made heaven and earth, the seas and all they contain.

It is he who gives bread to the hungry,
the Lord, who sets prisoners free.

It is the Lord who gives sight to the blind, who raises up those who are bowed down.

It is the Lord who protects the stranger
and upholds the widow and orphan.

It is the Lord who loves the just, but thwarts the path of the wicked.

The Lord will reign for ever, Zion's God, from age to age.

Lord, please increase my trust and faith in you

Galatians 2.1-9

14 years after that first visit, I again went to Jerusalem, with Barnabas and Titus

I explained to the Christian leaders how I had been proclaiming the Good News to non-Jews

James, Peter and John shook hands with us as a sign of partnership. We were to preach to the non-Jews, and they to the Jews

Jesus, please help all Christians to avoid disunity

Luke 6.12-16

Jesus went to the hills to pray. He spent a whole night praying. In the morning he called all his disciples together. He chose 12 of them and called them "apostles":

Peter and his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon, Judas son of James - and Judas Iscariot who became a traitor

Jesus and the 12 came down from the hill to a place of level ground.
Gathered there were his many disciples and a large crowd of people from all over the country who had come to hear him and to be healed of diseases

People in the crowd tried to touch Jesus because power came out of him that cured everyone

Jesus, please bless modern day apostles who pray for the sick to be healed

c.f. Readings for "Sunday 2"

1 Samuel 3

One day when the boy Samuel was serving in the temple, the Lord called to him "Samuel, Samuel."

The boy thought it was the old priest Eli calling to him, so he ran to Eli and said "Here I am."

Eli replied "I did not call you."

Two more times the Lord called. Both times the boy went to Eli.

Eli now realized it was the Lord calling Samuel. Eli told Samuel to say "Speak Lord, your servant is listening"
the next time he heard the voice.

Dear Lord, please help me to listen to your voice: your voice in the Bible, in my conscience and in other people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 40

I waited, I waited for the Lord and he stooped down to me. He heard my cry.

He saved me from distress. He put fresh hope into my heart.

How many, O Lord my God, are the times you have helped me. They are too many for me to describe.

My God, in the depth of my heart I delight in your law.
You do not want external offerings.
You want my heart.

Lord, I offer you my heart, my love. You deserve all my love

John 1.35-51

Andrew took his brother Simon to Jesus. Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter, and Peter followed Jesus

Jesus met  Philip and said to him "Follow me".  Philip called one more man, Nathanael (Bartholomew) and said to him "we have found the one Moses and the prophets wrote about. He is Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth"

Jesus, please help me introduce more people to know and love you

Sirach 32-34

If you are chosen for an important job,
don't let it go to your head.

When you speak,

The Lord supports all who fall, and raises all who are bowed down.

The eyes of all creatures look to you, and you give them their food each day.

Galatians 1.11-24

The Good News I preach is not a human message. It is something I received from Jesus Christ

I used to persecute the church, but then God called me to follow Jesus

I am  a one-time persecutor who is now preaching the faith I had previously tried to destroy

When I visited Jerusalem three years after my conversion,
the believers gave glory to God for what he had done for me

Jesus, please turn more persecutors into preachers!

Luke 6.6-11

On another Sabbath Jesus  visited a prayer hall. A man with a withered hand was in the prayer hall

Some religious leaders were watching to see if Jesus would heal the man (since no work was allowed on the Sabbath, and they regarded healing as work)

Jesus knew what they were thinking,  so he said to the man with the withered hand "Stand up! Come out into the middle of the hall". He came out and stood there

Jesus then asked the leaders "Is it against the law on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil; to save life or to destroy it?"

Then he said to the man with the withered hand
"Stretch out your hand". He stretched it out. It was healed.

The leaders were very angry. They left the prayer hall
and began plotting how to get rid of Jesus

Jesus, please stop bad religious leaders from misleading people

Sirach 29-31

Help others in their time of need. When people ask you for help, do not turn them away.

Do not let your children grow up wild. Teach them self control and self-discipline from their earliest years.

Good health is better than silver and gold.
Better to be poor and healthy than rich and sick.

Do not give in to brooding and fretting when things go wrong. Even in the saddest situation, look for light at the end of the tunnel.

Avoid jealously and anger. Jealously and anger will shorten your life.

A moderate diet will help you sleep well.
Gluttony produces sleeplessness, biliousness and grumpiness.

Wine was made to cheer our hearts.
But drinking to excess will reduce your strength.

Lord, please help me be moderate with food and drink

My recording of this reading

Psalm 145(b)

How good is the Lord to all,
compassionate to all his creatures.

All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord, and tell all the world of your love.

The Lord is faithful in all his words and loving in all his deeds.

One Sabbath day Jesus and his disciples were walking through a cornfield.  The disciples were hungry. They picked some ears of corn and ate them

Picking corn on the Sabbath was regarded as unlawful by the Pharisees. So the Pharisees said to Jesus "Your disciples are breaking the Sabbath law"

Jesus replied "Don't you remember what King David and his followers once did when they were hungry? They ate the Temple bread which only the priests were allowed to eat

I am Master of the Sabbath"

Sirach 25-28

Happy the husband of a really good wife. A good wife is the joy of her husband.

Do not praise a person before they have spoken. A person's speech reveals what sort of person is speaking.

Among stupid people look for an opportunity to leave,
but among thoughtful people take your time.

Sarcasm and abuse are the mark of an arrogant person.
Resentment and anger are bad for everyone.

Forgive others if they have offended you. Then when you pray, your own sins will be forgiven.

Avoid quarrelling and losing your temper. Do not let your mouth speak scandal.

Lord, please give me the wisdom to control my speech

My recording of this reading

Psalm 145(a)

I will give you glory, O God my king. I will bless your name day after day.

The Lord is great, worthy of all praise.
His greatness cannot be measured.

Age to age shall proclaim your works, shall speak of your splendor and glory.

The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love.

Lord, may I bless your name every day of my life

So, grow in your Christian life. Help one another. Be united. Live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the friendship of the Holy Spirit be with you all

Father, Son and Holy Spirit, help me live the way you want me to live

Luke 5.27-32

As Jesus walked along, he noticed a tax collector sitting by the customs house. The collector's name was Levi (Matthew)

Jesus said to him "Follow me".  Leaving everything, he got up and went with Jesus. In Jesus' honor, Levi held a banquet in his house. Many  tax collectors and social outcasts were present

The religious leaders complained "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and outcasts?"

Jesus replied "It is not those who are well who need the doctor, but the sick. I have come to call sinners, not the virtuous, to repentance"

Jesus, thank you for befriending people who were looked down on. Please help me do likewise

One special aim of my Tanzania trip is to support the idea of repatriation for Tz inmates in HK prisons.
So the report about China wanting Chinese inmates in Tz to be repatriated (see below) is perfect timing for lobbying for a two-way agreement!

Sirach 24

Wisdom speaks:
"From eternity, in the beginning, God created me. God sent  me to be everywhere on earth.

Approach me, you who desire me.
Whoever listens to me will stay on the road of goodness."

Lord, please help me seek wisdom and listen to wisdom's voice

Psalm 144

Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who gives me strength for every situation.

He is my love, my fortress. He is my stronghold, my savior.

To you, O God, will I sing a new song,
you who so often rescued David your servant.

Happy the people whose God is the Lord. Please continue to bless your people, Lord.

Let our sons flourish like saplings, grown tall and strong from their youth; our daughters graceful as columns, adorned as though for a palace.

Let our crops and stock be blessed.
May there be no sound of weeping on our streets.

Lord, please help us love and honor you every day. Don't let us ever forget your love

2 Cor 11.24 - 12.14

Remember how much I have suffered for the sake of the Good News:

- 5 times I had the 39 lashes from the Jews
- 3 times I was beaten with sticks
- once I was stoned
- 3 times I was shipwrecked
- I have often been starving

This should prove to you that I am a genuine apostle, not after money or fame or power. It is you I want, not your possessions

Jesus,  help church workers want souls - not money, fame, power

Luke 5.17-26

God's power was on display when Jesus healed people. People came from far and near to hear him teach, and to ask for healing

One day some people carried  a paralyzed man through a crowd to Jesus. The man was on a stretcher

Jesus knew that these people believed he could help them, so he said to the paralyzed man "My friend, your sins are forgiven"

Some religious leaders in the crowd were thinking to themselves that Jesus was wrong to say he could forgive sins

So Jesus said to the leaders "Which is easier: to say 'Your sins are forgiven', or to say 'Get up and walk'?"

Then to prove that he had authority to forgive sins, he said to the paralyzed man "Get up, pick up your bed and go home"

The man got up, picked up his stretcher and went home. The crowd praised God for what they had seen

Jesus, please give me more faith in your power to forgive, your power to heal

Four readings

Comments welcome here! Readers are most welcome to post comments and reflections on these readings

Sirach 20-23

People who foolishly talk too much become unpopular. Wise people know when to speak and how much to speak.

The talk of a foolish person is like a load on a journey. The talk of a wise person is a pleasure to hear.

Lord, do not give me proud eyes. Do not let  lust take control of my life.

Do not let my mouth use coarse and foul language.

Help me avoid sins of impurity, alone or with others.

Lord, please give me the wisdom to avoid bad talk and bad actions

Psalms 140-143

Lord, save me from people who do evil, you who do justice for the needy.

I have no way out of this situation. And no one wants to help me.

Lord, I beg you tonight to make haste and give me an answer, for my spirit fails within me.

In the morning let me know your love, for I put my trust in you.

Lord, please help people who are in big trouble

2 Cor 8.9 - 9.7

Remember how generous the Lord Jesus was. He was rich, but he became poor for our sake, to make us rich

So we also should help people who are poor. If we have extra, we should help people who don't have enough

Maybe some day, the same poor people will be rich, and we will be poor, and they will help us

And don't forget, God loves a cheerful giver

Jesus, help me do more to help poor people

Recording

Recommended: check these readings early morning, think about them during the day, check them again at night. This habit gives us extra energy, courage, motivation, peace and compassion for each day

 Luke 5.12-16

In one town that Jesus went to, a leper fell on his face and pleaded "Sir, if you want to, you can heal me"

Jesus stretched out  his hand, touched him, and said "Of course I want to!  Be healed!"   And the leprosy left him at once

Jesus' reputation continued to grow.  Large crowds gathered to hear him speak and to have their sicknesses cured. But afterwards Jesus would always go to a quiet  place where he could be alone and pray

Jesus, please help me understand that you want sick people to be healed

Lift at hotel where I am staying in Dar Es Salaam is very clever ...it has all sorts of messages I've never before heard in a lift. e.g. two days ago some people on the 3rd floor were a little slow getting out of the lift (with luggage), so when the lift arrived on my floor it said, just like a HK Metro announcement: "Sorry to keep you waiting"!
