   Pope's surprise visit
 to shanty town

Yesterday I again went to Stanley Prison, this time to visit "Cat B" Tanzanian inmates whose families I had met last month in Tanzania. There are around 60 Tanzanians at the prison, nearly all of them serving time for drug trafficking. They are the "little fish". The "big fish" are still swimming around in Dar Es Salaam and Guangzhou

Isaiah 28-30

God says: "I will punish priests and prophets who mislead the people. Their mouths utter lies.

They honor me only with lip-service, while their hearts are far from me.

Religion has become just a mental exercise, just a series of human laws."

The Lord appeals to everyone:
trust in him and cease to do evil.

Salvation is found in conversion and tranquility. Strength is found in complete trust in the Lord.

Lord, please help us honor you with our hearts as well as our heads

My recording of this reading

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose. Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my drooping spirit.

He guides me along the right path. He is true to his name. If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear. You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort.

You have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes. My head you have anointed with oil. My cup is overflowing.

Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord's own house shall I dwell for ever and ever.

Thank you, Lord, for being my good shepherd

Ephesians 3.14-21

This is what I pray, kneeling before the Father from whom
every family, whether spiritual or natural, takes it name:

May he give you  power through his Spirit for your hidden self to grow strong

May Christ live in your hearts through faith

Planted in love and built on love, may you continually focus on the love of Christ, until your life is filled with that love

Glory be to him whose power  working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine

Glory be to him from generation to generation in the Church  and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen

 Luke 9.28-36

One day Jesus took his disciples Peter, James and John up a high mountain to pray

On the mountain, while Jesus was praying, his whole appearance changed. His clothes became brilliant as lightning

The prophets Moses and Elijah appeared and spoke with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus "Lord, how good it is for us to be here!"

Then a bright cloud covered them with its shadow. From the cloud came a voice: "This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him"

When the voice had finished speaking, the disciples saw only Jesus in his normal appearance

Jesus, Beloved Son of God, how good it is to spend time with you in prayer.

Providence has a sense of humour:
Yesterday morning, after a number of delays, I just happened to hit the street (on way to Stanley Prison) at same time as a deaf and dumb rubbish collector who has become a good friend. As we were communicating, a young lady approached and asked if I needed help (she could tell that the man was deaf and dumb). And she immediately started using sign language!  The two of them were at the G/F entrance of my home at the very second I was there. Lady turned out to be co-founder of this lovely organisation

And for a follow-up:  At Stanely Prison I visited 5 or 6 different day-rooms. And in one day-room, who else was there, counselling a Filipina inmate? My confrere Fr Jun O.M.I. !

Yesterday I watched this video about Islam. After the opening song, the speaker employs strident language, and his use of the Bible is extremely fundamentalist, but the video contains two short yet alarming videos about the spread of Islam. ISIS is a wake-up call indeed!

Last Sunday at Mass I mentioned how I'd been able to give US$400 for a solar panel to a no-electricity school in Malawi when I was there last month ....and how 4 other schools in the area (each with 1,000 students) also need solar panels. Well, yesterday after my regular 8.30am Mass at St Paul's YMT, a kind parishioner put an envelope in my hand ....with HK$3,500 for one more solar panel. God bless you Nicholas!

Isaiah 26-27

Trust in the Lord for ever, for the Lord is an everlasting Rock.

Lord, we trust in you, we hope in you. At night our hearts long for you.

Lord, when we shelter under your protection you give us peace.

Lord, please help us trust you more

My recording of this reading

Psalm 22  (1)
(Many things in this psalm happened to Jesus when he was put to death.  This psalm prophesizes Jesus' death)

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? I call to you for help, but day and night you give no reply.

I am a worm and not a man.
Everyone who sees me makes fun of me.

They taunt  me: "He trusted in the Lord, why doesn't the Lord help him?"

Like water I am poured out, my bones no longer connected. My throat is parched, my tongue sticks to my jaws.

Many evil people attack me. They make holes in my hands and my feet. They await my death.

They divide my clothing among them, they throw a dice for my robe.

Recording

Psalm 22 (2)

Yet I know Lord, that  you are good and holy. I know how you heard the cries of our ancestors and you helped them.

It was you who took me from the womb and entrusted me to my mother's breast.

To you I was committed from my birth, from my mother's womb you have been my God.

Lord, I trust in you even now.
I trust you will not scorn my prayer.

Even now I praise you as my Creator. May all the nations know and worship you.

Lord, please help people who are in big trouble right now, especially people whose lives are in danger

Recording

Luke 9.22-26

Jesus now began explaining to his disciples how he would suffer, die and rise from the dead.

He also said "If you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself,
take up your own cross, and follow me.

Selfishness will ruin your life.
Self-sacrificing will bless your life.

What use is it to have everything in this world yet miss out on Heaven?"

Jesus, please help me find my life by losing it in service of others

c.f. Readings for "Sunday 5"

Job 3-7

Job broke the 7 day silence by wishing that he had never been
born. He added "For me, there is no peace, no sleep. My
suffering doesn't let me rest."

Eliphaz then spoke and reminded Job that God corrects those whom he loves.

Job replied that he was innocent of any wrongdoing, so why was he being punished?  He added: "Lying in bed I wonder 'When will it be day?'  During the day I think 'How slowly night comes.' Neither day nor night offers me any relief from my suffering."

Dear Lord, please give courage and peace to people who are suffering great pain or distress

My recording of this reading

Psalm 147

Praise the Lord for he is good.
Sing to our God for he is loving. To him our praise is due.

The Lord builds up Jerusalem
and brings back Israel's exiles.

He heals the broken-hearted
and binds up all their wounds.

The Lord raises the lowly
and humbles the wicked.

He fixes the number of the stars.
He calls each one by name.

Our Lord is great and almighty.
His wisdom can never be measured.

He covers the heavens with clouds. He prepares rain for the earth, making mountains sprout with grass and with plants to serve our needs.

His delight is not in horses nor his pleasure in warriors' strength.

The Lord delights in those who love and honor him, in those who wait for his love.

It is right and fitting to praise and love you, Lord our Creator

Photos & reports of my trip to Tanzania & Malawi Dec-Jan

                        1

Yesterday at a Hong Kong detention centre I had the sadness of meeting two new Tanzanian men. Media reports said that both  were arrested at HK airport on January 13 for drug trafficking. One had 78 capsules (800gm) of heroin in his stomach, the other 35 capsules (560gm) of cocaine in his stomach.  One of them left from  Dar Es Salaam airport (...security??...), the other from Burundi, arriving in HK about an hour apart.

2

Both of them were in Tanzania when I was there last month. Both of them had seen newspaper articles about my campaign to warn people not to take drugs to HK. One of them had even seen my TV interview in Tanzania! Yet they still brought drugs to HK.

Both in fact had previously been to HK on business. Or maybe that should be "on business".  Both of them were probably sent by the same Drug Lord who has consigned around 30 Tanzanians to incarceration in HK ...a guy called Kiboko, who is still at large in Dar Es Salaam.

3

One piece of good news about this: one of Tanzania's biggest media groups - Clouds Media - is now conducting an all-out war on the drug trade, and will use this audio update which I sent to Tz media last night re the two new Tanzanians arrested in HK.

If governments, media, community leaders and ordinary citizens don't unite to fight the drug trade, then the trade will be like the lion fish in this documentary on yesterday's menu. The trade will ruthlessly conquer more and more territory, doing terrible damage to more and more people

Isaiah 20-24

Trust in the Lord, not in military might. Israel is going the wrong way in forgetting God's protection.

It has no thought for its Maker,
no eyes for him who shaped everything long ago.

The reason why the earth is without rain and crops, is that people have forgotten their Creator.

My recording of this reading

Psalm 19

(sun + law = the "sun-in-law" psalm)

The heavens proclaim the glory of God, the starry skies are the work of his hands.

The stars can't speak, but they are  God's handwriting. The sun is God's love shining on the whole world.

The universe is a masterpiece, and so is God's law which shines in our hearts.

The precepts of the Lord enlighten our lives each day. The law of the Lord gives joy and wisdom to our hearts.

The decrees of the Lord are to be desired more than gold, they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb.

But  often we are unaware of  our errors. Lord, please protect us from making mistakes.

Lord, may the words of my mouth

Jesus got the people to sit on the grass. There were about 20,000 of them. Then he blessed the loaves and fish.

Shek Pik Prison on Lantau Island

Yesterday I spent 6 hours at Shek Pik Prison, visiting its complement of 19 Tanzanians (in 5 different workshops), some of whose families I met recently in Tanzania. Men were over the moon to see up to date photos of their families + messages from their families + articles from Tz newspapers about this website's anti-drug campaign (these articles will be linked on the website in coming days DV). One man was so happy to receive so much news about Tanzania that he said "I won't sleep tonight. I'm so excited!"

Four readings

Comments welcome here! Readers are most welcome to post comments and reflections on these readings

Isaiah 10-12

Woe to legislators who issue unjust laws, laws which exploit poor people.

A day of reckoning is coming
when unjust legislators will answer to the Lord.

The Lord will send a good and just king to rescue the poor.

A shoot will spring from the stock of Jesse, on him the spirit of the Lord will rest,

a spirit of wisdom and insight,
a spirit of counsel and power,

a spirit of knowledge, a spirit of love and respect for the Lord.

He will judge justly, and the land will know peace.

The country will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord. Exiles will return to their homeland.

Then we will draw water joyfully from the springs of salvation,
for great in our midst will be the Holy One of Israel.

Lord, please help governments to do more for poor people

Psalm 16

Please protect me, Lord, I take refuge in you. You are the only source of all true happiness.

I bless you, Lord, who guide and lead me. Even at night you direct my heart.

And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad. My body shall rest in safety now and always.

You will show me the path of life,
the fullness of joy in your presence, at your right hand, happiness for ever.

Thank you, Lord, for the little joys you give us each day .... and the big joy you've prepared for us in Heaven

Ephesians 1.19-23

God the Father raised Christ from death, and put him on the divine throne

Christ is the C.E.O. of  the universe, in charge of everything, from galaxies to governments. No one and nothing is exempt from his rule

At the center of everything is the church. It is Christ's body, in which he speaks and acts

Jesus, help me understand how the church is the heart of the world, pumping your life and love to all parts of the world

Luke 8.40-56

A prayer hall official came to Jesus and urgently asked him to go to his house, where his 12 year old daughter was dying

As Jesus and his friends were following the official to his home,
a woman who had a hemorrhage for 12 years came up behind Jesus and touched his clothing.  Her bleeding stopped at that moment

Jesus knew what  had happened  and said to her "My daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace"

Before  Jesus arrived at the official's house, a messenger arrived and said to the official " Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Master any more"

Jesus heard these words and said to the official "Do not be afraid. Have faith, and she will be ok"

At the house Jesus allowed only Peter, James, John and the girl's parents to go with him inside

To the mourners Jesus said "Stop crying. She is not dead, but asleep".  They laughed at him, since they knew she was dead

Jesus took the little girl by the hand and called to her "Child, get up".  Her spirit returned and she got up at once

Jesus, please increase my faith in your power to heal sick people
and raise the dead

Yesterday on the way home on the MTR (metro) I saw a blind man with a seeing eye dog (a lovely old Labrador). I thought to myself "that's the first time in my 30 years in HK that I've ever seen a seeing eye dog on the MTR".
First dog took 30 years. Second dog took 30 seconds ....when I looked towards another part of the train and saw another blind man with a seeing eye dog. Men and dogs part of a group that had been to Disneyland
