Pope to cardinals: seek contact with marginalized

The credibility of the Christian message rests entirely on how Christians serve those marginalized by society

On this website's past two menus (below) there have been articles about the Islamization of the world, and the spread of Sharia Law.

What can we do? Here's what one US surgeon did ...he used love ...with amazing results:
  The story of Kamal Saleem
(8 min video)

On the menu of Feb 13 (below) I mentioned how I helped two Tanzanian inmates in HK prisons to re-enroll at the Open University of HK (for which I borrowed 2 x HK$5,000). Well, this morning I borrowed another 2 x HK$5,000 to enroll two more inmates, one from Burkina Faso, the other from South Africa. If any kind readers could please help with these bills I'd sure be grateful. jdwomi@gmail.com

Isaiah 46-49

The Lord called me before I was born. From my mother's womb he knew my name.

While I was thinking that I had toiled in vain, all the while my cause was with the Lord.

The Lord who formed me in the womb and assigned me to rescue his people, that same Lord  said to me:

'I will make you the light of the nations, so that my salvation will reach to the ends of the earth'.

The Lord also says to his people:

"Does a woman forget her baby,
or a mother the child within her womb? Yet even if these forget, I will never forget you".

Lord, please help me understand
how you loved me even before I was born.

Psalm 33

Ring out your joy to the Lord, all good people, for praise is fitting for loyal hearts.

For the Lord loves justice and right; he fills the earth with his love.

By his word the heavens were made, he spoke and the universe came into being.

They are happy, whose God is the Lord, he is the source of all true  joy.

May your love be upon us, O Lord, since we place all our trust in you.

Lord, we trust in your precious love

 Luke 11.1-4

Once when Jesus had finished praying in private, one of his disciples asked him "Lord, teach us to pray". Jesus replied "Pray like this:

Father, may everyone love and honor you. Your kingdom come.
Thank you for enough food for today. Forgive us as we forgive others. Save us in time of trial"

Jesus, please teach me how to pray

Goodbye, Dear Friend
When Sister Dorothy and I returned home, I contacted the people in Washington, DC who arrange for the National Prayer Breakfast every year, to invite my two Chinese friends, which they did. Lin Chuan could not make it but Xinan did.   She learned much at the Prayer Breakfast and met Hillary Clinton and President Clinton

Sharia Law UK
Muslim imams in the UK now outnumber the UK's Christian pastors, and converting empty church buildings into mosques has become a cottage industry

Europe will soon be Muslim (see yesterday's menu, below). How can other places avoid the same fate?  By stopping Muslim immigration? By encouraging non-Muslim immigration (from Africa, India, China, South America)? By encouraging non-Muslim citizens to have more babies?  By standing up to Islamic pressure groups?

Isaiah 43-45

The Lord says: Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name, you are mine.

If you travel over the seas, I will be with you. If you travel on great rivers, I will protect you.

For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your savior.

They are ignorant, those who carry around an idol made of wood,
those who pray to a lump of wood that cannot hear.

Turn to me and be saved, all peoples of the world.

Lord, please help me be more aware of your protection
each day and night

My recording of this reading

Psalm 31

Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in distress. My eyes are full of tears, my heart full of sorrow.

Everyone makes fun of me. My friends don't want to know me.
Save me, Lord, from this mess.

I praise you Lord, for you protect those who trust you. You keep them safe from slander and lies.

Be strong, let your heart take courage, all you who  trust in the Lord

I trust in you, Lord. My life is in your hands

Ephesians 5.21-33

In your families, treat each other as Christ wants you to

Wives, in your husbands see Christ the head of the Church. Husbands, love your wives as Christ loves the Church

When men and women get married, they become one body. This sacred action helps us understand the relationship between Christ and the Church

Jesus, please help husbands and wives to love each other
the way you love the Church

Luke 10.29-37

The religious leader then asked another question: "Who is my neighbor?"

Jesus replied "A man on a journey was attacked by robbers. They beat him, took all he had, and left him seriously injured

A priest came by and saw the man, but did not help him. A temple worker also saw him, but did not help.  But a lowly foreigner who saw him was moved with pity

The foreigner bandaged his wounds, and used his own donkey to take the man to an inn. He paid the innkeeper to look after the man

Which of the three was a neighbor to the injured man?"

The leader replied "The one who helped him". Jesus then said "Go, and do the same"

Jesus, please don't let me ignore people who need help

c.f. Readings for "Sunday 6"

Leviticus 13.(1-46)

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, ‘If a swelling or scab or shiny spot appears on a man’s skin, a case of leprosy of the skin is to be suspected.

A man infected with leprosy must wear his clothing torn and his hair disordered; he must shield his upper lip and cry, “Unclean, unclean.”

As long as the disease lasts, he must be unclean; and therefore he must live apart: he must live outside the camp.’

Lord, please heal all lepers

My recording of this reading

Psalm 32

Happy is the person whose sin is forgiven.

For a while I refused to ask for forgiveness, and my body paid the penalty.

But then I said "Lord, forgive me"
and my spirit and body revived.

Lord, when I do wrong, please give me the grace to say sorry and ask forgiveness

Recording

Daniel Daring:
Jesus and the leper
The Law of Moses stated: “Anything that an unclean person touches becomes unclean, and anyone who touches it becomes unclean till evening”. And yet, moved with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the unclean leper

1 Cor 10.31 - 11.1

Whatever you eat, whatever you drink, whatever you do at all, do it for the glory of God.

Never do anything offensive to anyone – to Jews or Greeks or to the Church of God; just as I try to be helpful to everyone at all times, not anxious for my own advantage but for the advantage of everybody else, so that they may be saved.

Take me for your model, as I take Christ.

Jesus, please help me do things to give you, not myself, honor

Recording

Mark 1.40-45

A leper came to Jesus and on his knees pleaded "If you want to, you can heal me".

Feeling sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him and said "Of course I want to heal you. Be healed!"

The leprosy left him at that moment and he was healed.

Jesus told the man not to tell people what had happened (in case people misunderstood Jesus' spiritual mission and tried to use him politically).  But the man told everyone.

Soon Jesus could not go openly into any town (for fear the crowds would become unruly) so he stayed in remote places.

Even so, people from all around the district would come to him.

Jesus, please heal people who are lepers

Why mass incarceration policies must change

As Curia Reform Talks Begin, Francis Wields "The Supreme Law"

Reaching the Peripheries
Pope Francis intends to give such juridical status to episcopal conferences. He is convinced that “excessive centralization, rather than proving helpful, complicates the church’s life and her missionary outreach” (No. 32). This decision could cause a seismic shift in the governance of the Catholic Church and bring dividends in the ecumenical field.

Isaiah 41-42

The Lord says to his people Israel:

"I have chosen you. I have not rejected you. Do not be afraid, for I am with you.

Stop being anxious and worried.
I am your God. I give you strength and help.

Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom my soul delights.

I have endowed him with my spirit
that he may bring true justice to the nations.

He does not cry out or shout aloud. He does not extinguish the wavering flame.

I have called him to serve the cause of right, to open the eyes of the blind, to free captives from prison".

Lord, please help me understand how "my servant" is Jesus

An atheist was spending a quiet day fishing in Scotland when suddenly his boat was attacked by the Loch Ness monster. In a second the monster tossed him and his boat high into the air. Then it opened its mouth to swallow him.

As the man fell head over heels, he cried out, "Oh, dear God! Help me please!" At once, the ferocious attack scene froze in place, and as the atheist hung in mid-air, a booming voice from above said: "I thought you didn't believe in Me!"

"Come on Lord, give me a break!!" the man pleaded." Two minutes ago I didn't believe in the Loch Ness monster either!"

Isaiah 33-35

Strengthen all weary hands, steady all trembling knees, and say to all faint hearts "Courage! Do not be afraid. The Lord is coming to save you."

Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, the ears of the deaf unsealed.

Then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongues of the dumb sing for joy.

Exiles will return to Zion shouting for joy, everlasting joy on their faces.

Joy and gladness will go with them. Sorrow and lament will be ended.

Lord, please heal the friends I know who are blind, deaf, dumb....

My recording of this reading

Psalm 27

The Lord is my light and my help, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, before whom shall I shrink? Though an army encamp against me, even then would I trust.

There is one thing I ask of the Lord, for this I long: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.

It is your face, O Lord, that I seek. Hide not your face. I am sure I will see your goodness in the land of the living.

Hope in the Lord, hold firm and take heart. Hope in the Lord!

Lord, you are my light and my help. I will always praise you.

When you go into a town, cure those in it who are sick, and say:  'The kingdom of God is very near to you' "

Jesus, please inspire more people to make the spreading of the Good News their life's work

Home-schooling in HK?
Home schooling in many countries is very popular. I used to think it was illegal in HK. And maybe it still is?  But recently I met a family whose children have been home- schooled in HK ...one of many. For lots of info, Google "home schooling Hong Kong"

World Day of the Sick
- Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes

World Day of the Sick:
the Church runs 115,352 health care & social service centres in the world

Yesterday was spent at Tong Fuk Prison where I visited more than a dozen Tanzanian inmates, some of whose families I met last month in Tanzania. In the past I encouraged African inmates to learn Cantonese, since they were in HK. But having been to Africa and become aware of the huge number of Mainland companies and personnel in Africa, I'm now encouraging inmates to learn Mandarin as a way of finding employment on their return to Africa.

When I mentioned this plan to the friendly Superintendent of the prison, he immediately asked "Do you know any volunteers who could please come and help the African inmates to learn Mandarin?"!

Comments/Reflections welcome here

Isaiah 31-32

How foolish are people who trust in armaments but never bother to consult the Lord.
Help and salvation come from the Lord who says:

"Once more I will send the good rain. Then shall the wilderness be fertile land, and fertile land will become a forest.

In the wilderness, justice will come to live, and integrity in the fertile land. Integrity will bring peace,
and justice will bring security.

My people will live in a peaceful home, in safe houses, in quiet dwellings."

Lord, please give our world a bit more peace

Psalms 24-26

The Lord's is the earth and all its peoples. It is the Lord who is Creator of the universe.

May all hearts open their doors to the Lord. Let him enter, the king of glory.

Lord I hope in you all the day long. Forgive my sins and help me walk in your truth.

God my savior, teach me your way of truth

Ephesians 4.17-19

Do not go back to living the aimless kind of life that many non-believers live

Intellectually they are in the dark, because they have shut the door on God's grace

They have a poor sense of right and wrong, and have abandoned themselves to reckless living

Jesus, help people who are confused about the meaning of life

Luke 9.51-58

When the time came for Jesus to finish his life on earth, he resolutely took the road to Jerusalem

As Jesus and his disciples traveled along, they met a man who said to him "I will follow you wherever you go".

Jesus replied "Foxes have holes, and birds have nests, but I have nowhere to lay my head"

Jesus, give me  courage to do what I should do

It was on this date, two years ago, that Benedict XVI showed enormous courage in his resignation of the papacy, a decision that was to give Francis to the Church. It is also the date when we celebrate the feast of
Lourdes , the appearance of Mary to a small uneducated child whose faith we recognise in naming her saint

To go with today's feast of Our Lady of Lourdes:
A wheel-chair bound chap decided to visit the healing waters of Lourdes. It was very crowded but he spotted a gap and went for it at such a pace that he ended up in the pool, wheel-chair and all. When they fished him out he was quite disappointed to find that he was still unable to walk, but found consolation in the fact that his wheel chair had a brand new set of tyres
