Isaiah 53

And yet ours were the sufferings he bore, ours the sorrows he carried.

He was pierced through for our faults, crushed for our sins.

On him lies a punishment that brings us peace, and through his wounds we are healed.

We had all gone astray like sheep,
and the Lord burdened him with our sins.

Harshly dealt with, he bore it humbly, never opening his mouth.

He let himself be taken for a sinner, and all the time he was suffering and praying for sinners.

Jesus, these words refer to you.
Thank you for all you suffered to redeem the world.

Psalm 40

I waited, I waited for the Lord and he stooped down to me. He heard my cry.

He saved me from distress. He put fresh hope into my heart.

How many, O Lord my God, are the times you have helped me. They are too many for me to describe.

My God, in the depth of my heart I delight in your law. You do not want external offerings. You want my heart.

Lord, I offer you my heart, my love. You deserve all my love

Philippians 1.13-25

My chains have become famous and have given courage to many other believers. Many others are now becoming more daring in announcing the Message without fear

I hope and trust that I will always have courage for Christ to be glorified in my body, whether by my life or by my death

My heart wants to go two ways. One part wants to depart this world  and live for ever with Christ in heaven. The other part wants to stay in this world to help more people to know the Lord

Jesus, give me courage in spreading the Good News

Recommended: check these readings early morning, think about them during the day, check them again at night. This habit gives us extra energy, courage, motivation, peace and compassion for each day

 Luke 12.15-21

Jesus told the people this story: There was a rich man who, having had a good harvest from his land, thought to himself "What am I to do? I don't have enough room to store my crops".

Then he said to himself "This is what I will do: I will pull down my barns and build bigger ones, and store all my grain in them, and I will say to my soul: My soul, you have plenty of good things laid by for many years to come; take things easy, eat, drink, and have a good time"

But God said to him "Fool! This very night your earthly life will come to an end. And all your possessions, who will get them?"

So it is when people store up treasure for themselves, instead of making themselves rich in the sight of God

Jesus, please help me to be satisfied with what I have, and not to be greedy

c.f. Matteo Ricci one step closer to sainthood - Vatican Insider

Pages 424 to 479  show how the Russian declaration of war on Japan, and immediate invasion of Manchuria, had more effect on the decision making of the Japanese leaders, especially the military leaders, than the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Also described:
- the crucial role of the Emperor in forcing the military leaders to agree to unconditional surrender.
- when the Emperor recorded a radio broadcast announcing the surrender, it was the first time the people had ever heard his voice.   People weren't supposed to hear "the voice of god".
- US denial about deaths caused by radiation

Isaiah 52-53

See, my servant will prosper,
he shall be lifted up and exalted.

As the crowds were appalled on seeing him - so disfigured did he look - so will the crowds be astonished at him, for they will see something that has never happened before.

Without beauty, without majesty,  we saw him. He was despised and rejected, a man of sorrows and familiar with suffering. He was despised and we took no account of him

Thank you Jesus for suffering so much for the world's salvation

Psalms 38-39

O Lord, please forgive my sins and heal me. Heal my body which is sick because of my sins.

Protect me, Lord, from those who gloat over me now that I am brought low and unable to help myself.

Pilippians 1.1-9

From Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all the believers in the Church at Philippi

We wish you the grace and peace of  God our Father and of the Lord Jesus Christ

I thank God whenever I think of you. Every time I pray for you, I pray with joy, remembering how you helped to spread the Good News

You have a permanent place in my heart. God knows how much I miss you. I love you as Christ Jesus loves you

My prayer is that your love for each other will increase more and more, helping you always to know what is good and to avoid what is bad

Jesus, thank you for all the people
who have a permanent place in my heart

Luke 11.37-54

Jesus said to the religious leaders "You worry so much about cleaning dirty dishes, but don't care about having a dirty heart full of extortion and wickedness

At meetings and in the market, you like being treated as people of importance. But in fact you are like unmarked tombs that people walk on without knowing it

You expect ordinary people to observe unreasonable laws, while you excuse yourselves from such laws

You don't care about obtaining real wisdom, and you prevent others from obtaining wisdom"

The leaders were stung by Jesus' words, and they intensified their efforts to trap him in his speech

Jesus, help religious leaders be sincere people

c.f. Readings for "Lent 1"

Genesis 7-8

Noah's family and many animals went into the big boat, the "ark".

Then for about 40 days there was heavy rain which caused a great  flood.  The ark floated on the water.

The people and animals inside the ark were safe, but people and animals outside the ark died.

When the rain and flood stopped,
Noah and his family and the animals went out of the ark.

God made a special agreement (covenant) with Noah to bless Noah and his family.

God told Noah that the rainbow would be a sign of their agreement.

Dear God, thank you for making the rainbow so beautiful

Psalm 24

Lord, make me know your ways. Lord, teach me your paths. Make me walk in your truth, and teach me, for you are God my saviour.

1 Peter 3.18-22

In the body Jesus was put to death, in the spirit he was raised to life, and in the spirit he went to preach to the spirits in prison.

Now it was long ago, when Noah was still building that ark which saved only a small group of eight people ‘by water’, that these spirits refused to believe.

That water is a type of the baptism which saves you now, and which is not the washing off of physical dirt, but a pledge made to God from a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ

Jesus, please help me remember my baptism anniversary each year

Isaiah 50

The Lord has opened my ear to hear his message. The Lord has given me words to proclaim his message.

For my part, I made no resistance,
neither did I turn away.

I offered my back to those who struck me, my cheeks to those who tore at my beard.

I did not protect my face from insult and spittle.

I set my face like flint. The Lord will help me.

Lord, please help me understand how these words refer to Jesus

Psalm 34

I will bless the Lord at all times,
his praise always on my lips.

In the Lord my soul shall make its boast, the humble shall hear and be glad.

Glorify the Lord with me, together let us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me. From all my terrors he set me free.

The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere the Lord, to rescue them.

c.f. readings for Lunar New Year's Day

Genesis 1-2

God made the world.  God made  the sun, the moon  and the stars ....the whole universe.  God said "Let there be light" and there was light.

God made the earth with all its plants and trees and animals and fish and birds.

God made the first people .....the first man and first woman.  God made them in his own image, and said to them "Be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth."

God saw all that he had made, and all of it was good, very good

Dear God, thank you for making such a beautiful world!

My recording of this reading

Psalm 100

Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing for joy.

Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we belong to him. We are his people, the sheep of his flock.

Go within his gates, giving thanks.
Enter his temple with songs of praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name.

Indeed, how good is the Lord,
eternal his merciful love. He is faithful from age to age.

Dear Lord, please help us to serve you with gladness

Blessed be God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Before the world was made, he chose us in Christ, to live through love in his presence

He chose us, in Christ, to be his adopted children, to make us praise the glory of his grace

Double-layered veils and despair … women describe life under Isis

“I went once with my wife to one of the old souqs to do some shopping, and after a short while I lost her among the crowd. The problem was that all the women were wearing veils and it was hard to know who was my wife. I was utterly scared to make a mistake and go for the wrong woman"

Yesterday morning I attended the 40th anniversary celebration of the opening of the Oblate Primary School in Tokwawan. Then to the Open University of HK for registration of another inmate, then to Shueng Shui to visit elderly Oblates (one in hospital, one in a nursing home), then to Lai Chi Kok detention centre to collect one more OUHK application form (deadline for OUHK applications was last night), then back to OUHK ....the whole day in the company of St Eugene de Mazenod who on Feb 17, 1826 received "international approbation" for the Oblates of Mary Immaculate from Pope Leo XII

Joel 1-4

My country has been invaded.
Joy has disappeared from the land.

Priests, put on sackcloth and lament. Proclaim a fast to pray for our nation.

Turn to the Lord your God again,
for he is all tenderness and compassion.

Call out to the Lord for help.
"Spare your people, Lord!"

The Lord replies: " I will save and rescue you.

I will pour out my spirit on all peoples. Every one will prophesy and see visions.

You will learn that I am the Lord your God. Jerusalem will be a holy place."

Lord, let our land be filled with knowledge of you and love for you

Psalm 51

Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, and cleanse me of my sin.

My offences truly I know them.
What is evil in your sight I have done.

But in my defence please don't forget that sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA.

A pure heart create for me, O God.
Put a steadfast spirit within me.

Give me again the joy of your help. With a spirit of fervor sustain me.

Lord,  you will not spurn a humbled, contrite heart

2 Cor 5.14-19

The love of Christ is like a tsunami.
It overwhelms us and sweeps us away when we remember how Jesus died for everyone

God, through Christ, has repaired his friendship with humanity. We must spread the news of this reconciliation

"And when I think, that God his Son not sparing,   sent him to die, I scarce can take it in"
- from the song "How Great Thou Art"

Matthew 6.1-15

Jesus said to the crowds:

When you do a good deed,
do it for its own sake, not just to get people to praise you.

When you pray, love to pray in private in your heart. Don't be looking for people to notice and praise you.

When you pray, there's no need to rave on and on. God is not deaf. Prayer is not a lawyer arguing a case. Prayer is a child speaking with simple trust like this:

Our Father in heaven, may everyone love and honor you. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as in heaven. Thank you for enough food for today.
Forgive us as we forgive others. Save us in time of trial. Protect us from evil

Jesus,  help me remember that each time I pray "The Our Father",
you are praying with me. "Your Father = my Father = our Father"

Lord, I am not worthy but speak the word only
With Ash Wednesday and the start of the Season we call Lent there is a call to spiritual awareness, an opportunity to strip down to the bare essentials and see what really matters. Who we are, where we are and where we might be heading

I used my holiday time last month to go to Africa instead of Australia - a moving experience.
A Brisbane couple did the same thing - they spent two weeks of their holidays, including Christmas, with the Good Samaritan Sisters in the Philippines:
