Jeremiah 8-11

Jeremiah said sorrowfully:

My people have forgotten God.
My people ignore God.
My people follow false gods.
My people have no time for the real God.

Lord, you know how weak we are.
Correct us gently, Lord.

Correct us gently, Lord, correct us gently

Psalm 71 (let's pray this on behalf of people being attacked by IS)

In you, O Lord, I take refuge.
Please hear me and help me.

Be a rock where I can take refuge.
Rescue me from people who want to hurt me.

It is you, O Lord, who are my hope. In you I have trusted since I was young.

From my mother's womb you have been my help. My hope has always been in you.

Now that I am old, please do not forget me. Now that my strength fails, do not abandon me.

Now that I am old and grey-headed, may I continue to trust in you and proclaim your help.

To you I will sing with the harp.
All day long my tongue will tell of your goodness to me.

Lord, may all elderly people put their trust and hope in you

Colossians 1.9-14

I pray that you will continue to grow in your Christian life, a life full of good deeds

Never give in when trials come, but bravely, even joyfully, carry your cross each day

Keep on thanking the Father who has rescued us from the power of darkness, and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we gain our freedom, the forgiveness of our sins

Father, thank you for letting me be a Christian. Help me be a good Christian

Luke 18.9-14

Some people prided themselves on being virtuous, and despised others. Jesus told them this story:

Two men went to the Temple to pray, one a religious leader, the other a social outcast

The leader stood there and said "I thank you, God, that I am not greedy, unjust and adulterous like other people such as this outcast here"

The outcast did not even raise his eyes, but beat his breast and said "God, be merciful to me, a sinner"

The outcast, I tell you, went home a friend of God. The leader did not. People who exalt themselves will be humbled. People who humble themselves will be exalted

Jesus, be merciful to me, a sinner

Jeremiah 7

At the gate of the Temple in Jerusalem, Jeremiah proclaimed the word of the Lord:

"You people of Judah who come here to worship, amend your behavior and actions, and then I, the Lord, will meet you here in this Temple.

Do not exploit the stranger, the orphan and the widow. Do not follow alien gods, do not break the Commandments.

If you don't care about bad behavior and yet keep on coming to my Temple for worship,
your worship is useless and you are turning this Temple into a robbers' den.

This nation refuses to listen to the Lord. Sincerity has vanished since worship and behavior are not related."

Lord, please help me "practise what I preach"

My recording of this reading

Psalms 69-70

Save me, O God, for the waters have risen to my neck. I am sinking fast and can't keep afloat much longer.

So many people hate me without cause. I have no more strength to resist them.

May my situation not cause anyone to lose faith in you. May people realize that it is for your sake that I am taunted.

Taunts have broken my heart. No one shows me any compassion.

For food they give me poison. In my thirst they give me vinegar to drink.

Lord, do not hide your face from your servant. Answer quickly for I am in distress.

You are my rescuer, my help, O God. O Lord, do not delay to help me.

O God come to our  assistance. Lord make haste to help us

I always pray for you and give thanks for your faith in Christ Jesus, and the love you show to others because of the hope which is stored up for you in heaven

Luke 18.1-7

Jesus told his disciples a story about the need to pray continually and never lose heart:

There was a judge who had neither fear of God nor respect for people. In the same town there was a widow who kept asking the judge for justice against someone who had wronged her

For a long time the judge refused to help her, but at last he said to himself "I must give this widow her rights or she will pester me to death"

Even more so God will  see that justice is done for those who cry out to him for help day and night, even if he delays to help them

Jesus, please give me the perseverance to pray each day

Exodus 20

The Ten Commandments given by God to Moses:

1: I am the Lord your God. Do not worship anyone or anything else.

2: Use my name with respect. Do not insult my name.

3: Make the Sabbath Day a holy day each week.

4: Honor your father and your mother.

 5: Do not kill.

 6: Do not commit adultery.

 7: Do not steal.

 8: Do not tell lies.

9: Do not lust after someone else's wife.

10: Do not desire what belongs to someone else.

Dear God, please help us
to put these commandments into practice

My recording of this reading

Psalm 19

The heavens proclaim the glory of God, the starry skies are the work of his hands.

The stars can't speak, but they are  God's handwriting. The sun is God's love shining on  the whole world.

The universe is a masterpiece, and so is God's law which shines in our hearts.

The precepts of the Lord enlighten our lives each day. The law of the Lord gives joy and wisdom to our hearts.

The decrees of the Lord are to be desired more than gold, they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb.

But  often we are unaware of  our errors. Lord, please protect us from making mistakes.

Lord, may the words of my mouth
and the thoughts of my heart  be pleasing to you

1 Corinthians 1.18 - 2.9

The language of the Cross doesn't make sense for some people. But for us it is God's power to save

While the Jews demand miracles and the Greeks require philosophy, here we are preaching a crucified Christ: to the Jews an obstacle they cannot get over, to the pagans madness

During my stay with you, I relied not on philosophy or my own efforts, but only on the power of the Spirit

The wisdom we teach is about things no eye has seen, and no ear has heard, things beyond human understanding - all that God has prepared for those who love him

Jesus, crucified Lord, please increase my faith in you

Daniel Daring:
God's Dwelling Place

We are God's temple, God's dwelling place on earth. The crucified and risen Christ is our power and wisdom. Even if the world threatens us and tries to destroy us, we do not waver, because we believe that the cross leads to resurrection.

John 2.13-22

Just before the Passover Feast, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the Temple he saw people selling cattle and sheep and pigeons, with money changers sitting at their counting tables

Jesus made a whip out of some cord, then drove the sellers out of the Temple, cattle and sheep as well. He scattered the money changers' coins, knocked their tables over, and said to the pigeon sellers "Take all of this out of here and stop turning my Father's house into a market"

Some religious leaders asked him "What sign can you show us to justify what you have done?"

Jesus answered "Destroy this sanctuary, and in three days I will raise it up".  The leaders replied "It has taken 46 years to build this sanctuary"

But Jesus was speaking of the sanctuary that was his body, and when he rose from the dead, his disciples remembered his words

Jeremiah 3-6

The country has no rain because its people have forgotten the Lord.

The people refuse to repent, and so the land has many sorrows.

Lord,  please bless our land - by helping us be better people.

As they went away, their leprosy disappeared.

Seeing that he was healed, one of them turned back praising God at the top of his voice. He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him.

This made Jesus say "Were not all 10 healed? Where are the 9 others?"

Jesus, please don't let me forget to say "thank you" when someone helps me

Jeremiah 2

This is what God told Jeremiah to shout out loud in Jerusalem:

"The Lord says: I remember the love you used to have for me.
But now you have forgotten me.

Priests and prophets have no knowledge of me. King and princes have rebelled against me.

Not only have you abandoned me,
you now follow false gods.

You have abandoned the fountain of living water in exchange for muddy pools."

Lord, please don't let anyone else  or anything else ever replace you as number one in my life

My recording of this reading

Psalms 61-65

O God, hear my cry,
you who are my refuge and help.

In you alone is my soul at rest.
My help comes from you.

Take refuge in God, everyone in trouble. Trust him at all times.

O God, you are my God, for you I long. My body and soul thirst for you like a dry, weary land without water.

Your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise.

On my bed I remember you. On you I muse through the night.

You are the Creator of the world.
You care for the earth, you give it water.

To you our praise is due, wherever we are on earth.

Lord, my soul clings to you. Your right hand holds me fast

Jesus told this story to the people: There was a rich man who used to

At his gate there was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to eat scraps that fell from the rich man's table. Dogs even came and licked his sores

The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. In his torment in Hell, the rich man looked up and saw Abraham a long way off with Lazarus at his side

A new man is brought into the Prison Cell. Already there is a long-time resident who looks 100 years old. The new man looks at the old-timer inquiringly.
The old-timer says: "Look at me. I'm old and worn out. You'd never believe that I used to live the life of Bill Gates. I wintered on the Riviera, had a boat, four fine cars, the most beautiful women, and I ate in all the best restaurants of France."
The new man asked: "And... what happened?"
"One day Bill Gates reported his credit cards missing!"

Luke 15.11-24 (a)

Jesus told this story: a man had two sons. The younger said to his father "Father, give me the share of the estate that would come to me"

So the father divided his property between them. A few days later, the younger son left for a distant land where he wasted his money in wild living

When he had used all his money, that country had a severe famine, and he began to feel the pinch, so he got a job on a farm  feeding  pigs. He would willingly have eaten the pigs' food, but no one offered him anything

Recording

Luke 15.11-24 (b)

Then he came to his senses and said "How many of my father's paid servants have more food than they want, and I am dying of hunger

I will leave this place and go to my father and say: Father, I have
sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be
called your son. Treat me as one of your paid servants."

So he left the place and went back to his father

But the father said to his servants "Quick! Bring out the best robe

Bring the calf we have been fattening, and kill it. We are going to have a feast, a celebration, because this son of mine was dead and has come back to life. He was lost and is found."

Putting an end to prelates' purposeless pontificating

But, like most messages by most of the world’s bishops’ conferences, this one will provoke little interest or discussion, let alone action. In fact, like most such messages, it is likely to remain largely unread

China’s Cadres Face the Future

The NPC and CPPCC are not off Wang’s radar and as a result, the hundreds of cadres traveling to Beijing for this year’s conclave are keeping an extremely low profile.  Expensive cars are out, along with flashy jewelry

My job as a prison chaplain is now beginning to involve more time communicating with inmates' families - especially in Africa.

The shock experienced by a family when a family member goes to prison is one of the hardest blows we can receive in this life. In some ways, the pain of the family is greater than the pain of the inmate

Jeremiah 1

Jeremiah lived in a village not far from Jerusalem. Jeremiah's father was a priest.

God said to Jeremiah: "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. I have appointed you as prophet to the nations."

Jeremiah said to God: "Lord, I do not know how to speak. I am so young."

God then touched Jeremiah's mouth and said: "I now put my words into your mouth. Go and tell the people everything I ask you to speak.

Do not be dismayed by anyone. I am making you strong.

You must confront Judah's kings, priests and people. They will oppose you, but will not overcome you, for I am with you."

Lord, please give special courage
to people who speak your message for the world

Psalms 52-60

Lord, I will tell everyone about how good you are. You are our Creator. Everyone should love you.

Thank you for so often rescuing me from trouble. You uphold my life.

Sometimes I have so many troubles and cares that I can't get to sleep.

Sometimes I wish I was a bird
and could fly away to a safe place.

When I fear, I will trust in you,
in you whose word I praise.

My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready. I will sing, I will sing your praise.

Each morning I will sing of your strength, and each morning acclaim your love.

O God, please help me to praise and love you every day

Philippians 4.4-9

I want you to be happy, always happy in the Lord. Let your tolerance be evident to everyone

If there is anything you need, with prayer and thanksgiving ask God for it

Fill your minds with everything that is true, everything that is noble, everything that is good and pure, everything that is worthwhile. Then the God of peace will be with you

Jesus, please fill my mind with good things

Luke 14.12-14

Jesus said to the meal guests "When you give a lunch or a dinner, do not ask your friends, family, or rich neighbors

Rather, when you have a party, invite the poor, the crippled,
the lame, the blind

That they cannot repay you means you are fortunate, because repayment will be made to you when the virtuous rise again"

Jesus, help me do more to help poor people

Iconoclasts
The murderous treatment that we have seen in recent weeks in an attempt to subjugate people and enforce control through fear has filled our screens and newspapers, evil acts that belie the Moslem faith.  To destroy the historical and sacred links with their past only adds to their indignity
