Jeremiah 36

God told Jeremiah to write down
all the messages he had spoken for God. So Jeremiah got Baruch to make a written record of all his messages. Baruch wrote the messages on a scroll.

Some good officials took the scroll to the king to read. The officials hoped the king would obey the words of the scroll.

The king had the scroll read aloud for him. As each section was read, the king used a knife to cut off the section, and then threw the section into a fire.

Eventually the whole scroll was burnt. The king then issued an order for  Jeremiah to be arrested.

God protected Jeremiah and did not allow him to be arrested for the time being. God also told Jeremiah to have another scroll made.

Lord, please move world leaders' hearts to be open to your message of justice and peace and love

Psalm 87

On the holy mountain is Jerusalem, the Lord's cherished city.

Of you are told glorious things, O city of God.

All nations are called to serve and love the Lord. And Jerusalem shall be called their spiritual mother, for all shall be her children.

In Jerusalem everyone will be welcome and find a home.

Lord, may Jerusalem be a place of peace and prayer for all peoples

Luke 22.12-20

On the evening of the Passover feast, Jesus and his apostles ate the Passover Lamb in a large upper room furnished with couches

While they were having the meal, Jesus took some bread, and when he had given thanks, broke it and gave it to his apostles saying "This is my body"

Then he took a cup of wine and said "This cup is the new covenant
in my blood which will be poured out for you"

Jesus, please help me understand how your Body and Blood

Nine photos here of baptism yesterday for A-Wing, a very special person, at end of monthly prayer meeting for the sick at St Paul's, Yau Ma Tei, HK

Pope yesterday had meal with 120 inmates in a Naples prison, with 12 apostles at his table

“At times you may feel disappointed, discouraged, abandoned by all, but God is always at our side, especially in times of trial"

The Holy Father went on to encourage the prisoners, saying that no matter what mistakes they committed in life, the Lord never tires of showing them the path that leads to Him and that “not even jail bars” can separate them from God’s love.

Acknowledging the many letters he receives from prisoners around the world, the Pope sympathized with them and the undignified conditions many find themselves in.

However, he also praised the work of the directors, chaplains, educators and pastoral workers who remain close to them. He also called for the development of a positive experience in prison life so that, once freed, detainees can contribute to both society and the Church

Jeremiah 32

Jerusalem was about to be captured by the Chaldaeans. But God  promised that Jerusalem would recover its freedom.

As a sign that Jerusalem would be free again, God told Jeremiah to buy a field.

People thought Jeremiah was crazy. But through this action Jeremiah delivered God's message:

This city and this land are now a waste, but soon people will again buy land and build homes in freedom and safety.

Lord, when things get really bad, please increase our trust in you
that you will turn things around in our lives

My recording of this reading

Psalm 86

Turn your ear, O Lord, and give answer for I am poor and needy.

O Lord, you are good and forgiving, full of love to all who call to you.

All the nations shall come to adore you and glorify your name, O Lord, you who alone are God.

Show me, Lord, your way, and guide my heart, so that I may walk in your truth.

I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart, for your love to me has been great.

O give your strength to your servant and save your handmaid's son.

Luke 22.1-6

Big crowds were in Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover which was only a few days away. The religious  leaders were afraid that the crowds would prevent them from killing Jesus

But then Satan entered into Judas Iscariot who was one of the 12 apostles. Judas went to the leaders to plan how to capture Jesus. The leaders agreed to give Judas some money for his help

Judas then began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus at a time when there were no crowds around

Jesus, please protect me from Satan's influence, and from any sort of pride that might make me want to abandon your friendship

Jeremiah 30-31 (same as yesterday!)

God told Jeremiah to tell the people these words:

"I will restore you to health.
I will heal your wounds.

I have loved you with an everlasting love. Strong and constant is my love for you.

I will bring back the exiles and save them. I will change their sorrow into joy.

The days are coming when I will make a new agreement with my people. Deep within their hearts I will plant love of my Law.

I will be their God and they will be my people. I will forgive all their sins."

Lord, please plant love of you deep within my heart

My recording of this reading

Psalm 51

Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, and cleanse me of my sin.

My offences truly I know them.
What is evil in your sight I have done.

But in my defence please don't forget that sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA.

A pure heart create for me, O God.
Put a steadfast spirit within me.

Give me again the joy of your help. With a spirit of fervor sustain me.

Lord,  you will not spurn a humbled, contrite heart

Hebrews 5.7-9

During his life on earth, Christ offered up prayer and entreaty, aloud and in silent tears, to the one who had the power to save him out of death, and he submitted so humbly that his prayer was heard.

Although he was Son, he learnt to obey through suffering; but having been made perfect, he became for all who obey him the source of eternal salvation.

Two Samuel 7

After David settled into his palace and the land enjoyed peace, David thought about building a temple for the Lord.

Then through the prophet Nathan the Lord told David:

" I will establish your dynasty for ever. But it will be your son, not yourself, who will build a temple for me."

David praised God: "Who am I, Lord, and what is my House, that you have helped me so much and promised me so much?

May my House continue in your presence for ever. May you bless my House forever."

Matthew 1.18-24

This is how Jesus Christ came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph; but before they came to live together she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a man of honour and wanting to spare her publicity, decided to divorce her informally.

He had made up his mind to do this when the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because she has conceived what is in her by the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son and you must name him Jesus, because he is the one who is to save his people from their sins.’
When Joseph woke up he did what the angel of the Lord had told him to do.

Jesus, Son of David, save your people from war and strife

Update re dangerous situation in Pakistan: Jesus, please protect the Christians in Pakistan!

Dear Brother Oblates
I thank you for your solidarity and prayers expressed through emails. As I shared with some of you earlier on, two churches in Yohanabad, Lahore came under suicide attack on Sunday (15) killing at least 17 people and injuring over 80, some critically.

Yohanabad is the biggest Christian settlement in Pakistan where over 40 Christian denominations are living making the total Christian population about one hundred and fifty thousand, of which about 35% are Catholics. There are several churches and worshiping centers for each denomination. The Catholic church and the church of Pakistan are two major churches that house  2000 and 1000 people on Sunday morning service respectively. It was estimated that on last Sunday (15) there were about 1700 people assembled for the Sunday Mass in the Catholic church, while several hundreds were also gathered to the Christ church of the Church of Pakistan for the Sunday service. Both churches were provided Police security, but the few police personnel who were there at the Catholic church were watching a cricket match that Pakistan was playing against Ireland in the world cup tournament when the attacker detonated his devices. However, if not for the 18 year old Catholic boy (Akash) who wrestled with the human bomber and sacrificed his own life, several hundred men, women and children would have been massacred in the blood bath in side the church. Just after a minute the second attacker managed to shoot three policemen down who were providing security to Christ church and blast himself with the bomb and kill several worshipers.

The angry and emotional Christians who turned violent have caught two suspected terrorists and lynched them and set their bodies on fire. Some others have destroyed both private and public properties.

Yesterday (17) the bodies of the Christian victims were buried amidst tense situation. All entries to Yohanabad were sealed and no movements were possible. I too had to stay in a near by parish house from morning to evening to get into house. Last night was a sleepless night for all of us and no doubt for all the Christians living here for fear of Muslim mobs who had warned of setting fire to the whole area. We sent our philosophy students out of house to a close by convent and now (18 morning) we decided to send the boys home for the situation is deteriorating. I also talked to the archbishop and the rector of the seminary that we are taking this action for the safety of the boys and the Bishop to agreed our idea and perhaps the whole seminary will be closed till Easter.
Our situation is quite uncertain, and I have advised the other community members to be ready to leave the place at least for a few days, because there had been very unpleasant announcements over the public address systems of some of the mosques as reported. Keep us in your prayer. God bless you all.

The Great Jubilee of 2000 was really not all that great. Pope Francis has a chance to make that right.

Jeremiah 33-35

Most of the people and their leaders ignored God's message
delivered by Jeremiah.

But one group listened to Jeremiah and obeyed God's message: that group was the nomad clan of Rechabites.

At God's command Jeremiah invited them to a meal  near the Temple, and invited them to drink wine.

But they replied that they had been told by God never to own property or build houses or be farmers or drink wine.

Jeremiah then spoke to the people watching the Rechabites: "See how this clan is obedient to the message of the Lord, unlike most of the people and its leaders who ignore God.

Because this clan has been faithful and obedient, therefore it will  always be blessed by the Lord".

Lord, please help me be faithful to you,  like the Rechabites

Psalms 82, 83

God says to corrupt officials:

"How long will you judge unjustly and mistreat the poor? You should do justice for the weak and the orphan.

You should defend the afflicted and the needy. You should rescue the weak and the poor. You should set them free from the hand of the wicked".

O God, please protect your people from corruption and injustice.
Save us also from attack by other nations.

Let everyone know that you are the Lord of all the earth.

Lord, please stop corrupt officials from hurting people

Colossians 3.12-14

You are God's special friends. He loves you. You should be clothed in sincere compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience

Allow for other's weaknesses. Forgive each other as soon as a quarrel begins. The Lord has forgiven you. You must forgive others

Over all these clothes, to keep them together and to complete them, put on love

Jesus,  help me be a better and kinder person

Luke 19.41-48

As Jesus caught sight of Jerusalem, he shed tears over it and said "How I wish you had accepted my message of peace. You will be totally destroyed, because you rejected God's offer of grace"

Jesus then went into the Temple and drove out the sellers. According to the Scripture", he said, "my house will be a house of prayer. But you have turned it into a robbers' den"

Each day Jesus taught in the Temple. The leaders wanted to do away with him, but they didn't know how to, since most of the ordinary  people had great respect for Jesus

Jesus, please don't let me ever reject your friendship

Newly-arrested drug traffickers usually spend a few days in a prison hospital section (to double check no drugs left in their bodies) before they move to ordinary day rooms of the prison. Yesterday as I visited two recently-arrived Nigerian inmates in the hospital section of a detention centre, I noticed something I hadn't noticed before: the hospital's uniform consists of green and white squares ....and Nigeria's flag is  .... (but inmates were not really in the mood for smiling ..)
