Jeremiah
36 Some good officials took the scroll to the king to read. The officials hoped the king would obey the words of the scroll. The king had the scroll read aloud for him. As each section was read, the king used a knife to cut off the section, and then threw the section into a fire. Eventually the whole scroll was burnt. The king then issued an order for Jeremiah to be arrested. God protected Jeremiah and did not allow him to be arrested for the time being. God also told Jeremiah to have another scroll made. Lord, please move world leaders' hearts to be open to your message of justice and peace and love |
Psalm
87 Of you are told glorious things, O city of God. All nations are called to serve and love the Lord. And Jerusalem shall be called their spiritual mother, for all shall be her children. In Jerusalem everyone will be welcome and find a home. Lord, may Jerusalem be a place of peace and prayer for all peoples

In Burma, a "higher class person" is not supposed to hold an umbrella to protect a "lower class person" from sun/rain. Which is why in this video report, a man and woman have an umbrella's shadow at their feet, but the umbrella has been deleted from the photo. Report is in Chinese, but missing umbrella is easy to spot (?) |

Pope yesterday had meal with 120 inmates in a Naples prison, with 12 apostles at his table “At times you may feel disappointed, discouraged, abandoned by all, but God is always at our side, especially in times of trial" The Holy Father went on to encourage the prisoners, saying that no matter what mistakes they committed in life, the Lord never tires of showing them the path that leads to Him and that “not even jail bars” can separate them from God’s love. Acknowledging the many letters he receives from prisoners around the world, the Pope sympathized with them and the undignified conditions many find themselves in. However, he also praised the work of the directors, chaplains, educators and pastoral workers who remain close to them. He also called for the development of a positive experience in prison life so that, once freed, detainees can contribute to both society and the Church |

Jeremiah
32 As a sign that Jerusalem would be free again, God told Jeremiah to buy a field. People thought Jeremiah was crazy. But through this action Jeremiah delivered God's message: This city and this land are now a waste, but soon people will again buy land and build homes in freedom and safety. Lord, when things get really
bad, please increase our trust in you |
Psalm
86 All the nations shall come to adore you and glorify your name, O Lord, you who alone are God. Show me, Lord, your way, and guide my heart, so that I may walk in your truth. Luke 22.1-6 Big crowds were in Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover which was only a few days away. The religious leaders were afraid that the crowds would prevent them from killing Jesus But then Satan entered into Judas Iscariot who was one of the 12 apostles. Judas went to the leaders to plan how to capture Jesus. The leaders agreed to give Judas some money for his help Judas then began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus at a time when there were no crowds around Jesus, please protect me from Satan's influence, and from any sort of pride that might make me want to abandon your friendship

c.f. Readings for "Sunday 22" Jeremiah
30-31
(same as yesterday!) "I will restore you to health. I will bring back the exiles and save them. I will change their sorrow into joy. The days are coming when I will make a new agreement with my people. Deep within their hearts I will plant love of my Law. I will be their God and they will be my people. I will forgive all their sins." Lord, please plant love of you deep within my heart |
Psalm
51 My offences truly I know them. But in my defence please don't forget that sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA. A pure heart create for me, O God. Give me again the joy of your help. With a spirit of fervor sustain me. Lord, you will not spurn
a humbled, contrite heart
|
During his life on earth, Christ offered up prayer and entreaty, aloud and in silent tears, to the one who had the power to save him out of death, and he submitted so humbly that his prayer was heard. Although he was Son, he learnt to obey through suffering; but having been made perfect, he became for all who obey him the source of eternal salvation. Jesus, please help us to put up with difficulties for the sake of your kingdom
|
John 12.23-33 Jesus said to his apostles Andrew and Philip "Now the time has come for me to be glorified. Unless a wheat grain goes into the ground and dies, it remains only a single grain. But if it dies, it yields a rich harvest Now sentence is being passed on this world. Now Satan is to be defeated. And when I am lifted up from the earth, I shall draw all people to myself" By these words, Jesus indicated the kind of death he would die Jesus, lifted up on the Cross, you are the Saviour of the world

Luke 21.3-38 Jesus said to his disciples that Jerusalem would be destroyed and its people scattered throughout the world He also spoke of how his followers would be persecuted, and of the end of the world: "The planets will be shaken, nations will be in agony, bewildered by the force of the oceans. Then they will see me coming in a cloud with great power and glory To prepare for your own end of earthly life, stay faithful to prayer and goodness. Don't let your heart be coarsened by debauchery, drunkenness and material cares" In this his final week on earth, Jesus spent the daytime in the Temple, teaching. From early morning the people would gather round him to listen to him. Then he would spend the night on the Mount of Olives Jesus, help me be faithful to prayer and goodness |

Jeremiah 24-29 For 23 years Jeremiah spoke the message of the Lord, calling on people to do good and turn away from evil. But the people, especially the leaders, refused to listen to Jeremiah. Yesterday afternoon I went to a bookstore for a while, then to a church, then to Chung King Mansion to get things for the prisons (see story at top of this menu) ....and just at the very minute I was buying IDD cards at a certain shop, one of the three just-released Africans "happened" to walk past and, despite the crowd, recognised me. And yesterday's trip is something I do only every couple of months. What are the chances of all this happening just "by chance"?! At the very least when things like this happen (and they happen not infrequently) we have to say in our hearts "thank you Lord for such timing"!) |

Update re dangerous situation in Pakistan: Jesus, please protect the Christians in Pakistan! Dear
Brother Oblates Yohanabad
is the biggest Christian settlement in Pakistan where over 40 Christian
denominations are living making the total Christian population about one
hundred and fifty thousand, of which about 35% are Catholics. There are
several churches and worshiping centers for each denomination. The
Catholic church and the church of Pakistan are two major churches that
house 2000 and 1000 people on
Sunday morning service respectively. It was estimated that on
last Sunday (15) there were about 1700 people assembled for the Sunday
Mass in the Catholic church, while several hundreds were also gathered
to the Christ church of the Church of Pakistan for the Sunday
service. Both churches were provided Police security, but the few police
personnel who were there at the Catholic church were watching a cricket
match that Pakistan was playing against Ireland in the world cup
tournament when the attacker detonated his devices. However, if not for
the 18 year old Catholic boy (Akash) who wrestled with the human bomber
and sacrificed his own life, several hundred men, women and children
would have been massacred in the blood bath in side the church. Just
after a minute the second attacker managed to shoot three policemen down
who were providing security to Christ church and blast himself with the
bomb and kill several worshipers. The
angry and emotional Christians who turned violent have caught two
suspected terrorists and lynched them and set their bodies on fire. Some
others have destroyed both private and public properties. Yesterday
(17) the bodies of the Christian victims were buried amidst tense
situation. All entries to Yohanabad were sealed and no movements were
possible. I too had to stay in a near by parish house from morning to
evening to get into house. Last night was a sleepless night for all of
us and no doubt for all the Christians living here for fear of Muslim
mobs who had warned of setting fire to the whole area. We sent our
philosophy students out of house to a close by convent and now (18
morning) we decided to send the boys home for the situation is
deteriorating. I also talked to the archbishop and the rector of the
seminary that we are taking this action for the safety of the boys and
the Bishop to agreed our idea and perhaps the whole seminary will be
closed till Easter. Derrick omi From Yohanabad, Lahore. Pakistan.

Jeremiah
33-35 But one group listened to Jeremiah and obeyed God's message: that group was the nomad clan of Rechabites. At God's command Jeremiah invited them to a meal near the Temple, and invited them to drink wine. But they replied that they had been told by God never to own property or build houses or be farmers or drink wine. Jeremiah then spoke to the people watching the Rechabites: "See how this clan is obedient to the message of the Lord, unlike most of the people and its leaders who ignore God. Because this clan has been faithful and obedient, therefore it will always be blessed by the Lord". Lord, please help me be faithful to you, like the Rechabites |
