Hosea 4

People of Israel, listen to the word of the Lord:

there is no fidelity, no tenderness, no knowledge of God in the country,

only perjury and lies, slaughter, theft,
adultery, violence and murder.

This is why the country is in mourning. This is why you have experienced so much disaster.

My people, says the Lord, perish for want of knowledge.

Lord, please help us lead good lives, and so help our country experience blessing

Psalms 109-110

O God whom I praise, do not be silent, for people are bombarding me with  words of hate.

They speak to me with lying tongues and attack me without cause.

They repay me evil for good. While I pray for them,  they show me hatred.

I have become an object of scorn. Help me, Lord my God.

Lord, when people are unkind to me,
please give me the grace to pray for them

We have put our trust in the living God. He is the savior of the whole human race, especially of believers

Jesus, may I keep fit, physically and spiritually

 John 5.36-46

Jesus said to the religious leaders "The healing and teaching my Father has given me to do, testify that the Father sent me

You study the Scriptures, realizing that in them there is the message of life. Now these same Scriptures focus on me, and yet you refuse to come to me for life

If you really believe what Moses wrote, you would believe in me, since it was I that he was writing about"

Jesus, please help me understand how everything in the Bible is related to you. Help me understand that "ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of you"

Nepal was made vulnerable by more than its violent geology
The country is crippled by poverty and poor infrastructure – when the long-feared earthquake hit, devastation was inevitable.

A fascinating documentary about one of the greatest movies ever made:
The Real Chariots of Fire
  (and see the comments)

After winning a gold medal at the 1924 Paris Olympics, Eric Liddell went back to China where he had been born, to continue his father's work as a missionary ... bravely staying even after China was invaded by Japan ... eventually dying in a Japanese P.O.W. camp.

In 2008, just before the Beijing Olympics, Chinese authorities revealed that Liddell had refused an opportunity to leave the camp, and instead gave his place to a pregnant woman. Apparently the Japanese and British had agreed upon a prisoner exchange for him

Hosea 1-3

God said to Hosea "Marry a prostitute and have children by her, for my people have abandoned me and become unfaithful".

The Lord's people are like his wife, but they have abandoned him.

Hosea's wife was unfaithful to him and left him. But the Lord told Hosea to take her back.

This was to show how God welcomes people back, even though they have been unfaithful to him.

Lord, please help us to be faithful to you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 108

My heart is ready, O God. I will sing, sing your praise. Awake, lyre and harp. I will awake the dawn.

I will thank you, Lord, among the peoples, praise you among the nations, for your love reaches to the heavens, and your truth to the skies.

O Lord, come and deliver us today. Help us with your right hand.

Give us help in difficult situations.
With your help we shall be brave.

Lord, we need your help every day

1 Timothy 4.1-7

Don't be surprised if some people come up with strange ideas about how to live life. Satan and his friends are always trying to sow lies and deception in the Lord's field of truth

Have nothing to do with strange ideas like "marriage is forbidden" or "you are not allowed to eat certain foods"

Everything God made is good, and no food is to be rejected, provided grace is said for it. The word of God and prayer make food holy

Jesus, please help me remember to say a little prayer before I eat

John 5.17-30

Jesus said to the religious leaders "My Father goes on working, and so do I. Whoever refuses honor to the Son, refuses honor to the Father who sent him

The Father judges no one. He has entrusted all judgement to the Son

A time will come when the dead will leave their graves at the sound of the Son's voice. Those who did good, will rise again to life. Those who did evil, will face condemnation".

Jesus, some day you are going to be my judge. On that day may I hear you say "I was hungry, and you gave me food etc"  (Matthew 25. 31 - 46)

c.f. Readings for "Easter 4"

Acts 4.1-12

While Peter was talking to the crowd, some religious leaders and soldiers came and arrested Peter and John

The next day the leaders held a meeting and asked the prisoners: "By what power and by whose name did you heal the crippled beggar?"

Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, replied "The cripple is able to stand up perfectly healthy because he was healed by Jesus the Nazarene, the one you crucified, whom God raised from the dead

Salvation comes no other way. Only by the name of Jesus can we be saved"

Jesus, your name means "God saves", you are indeed the Saviour of the world

My recording of this reading

Psalm 118

Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love has no end.

Let the sons of Israel say:
"His love has no end."

The Lord's right hand has triumphed. His right hand has raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live and recount all his deeds.

The stone which the builders rejected, has become the corner stone.

This is the work of the Lord,

2005-04-26 Miss Marcia Yiang, born at dawn yesterday morning, Anzac Day,  feast of St Mark

For Good Shepherd Sunday:

Pastor in talk to Sunday School told the children about sheep, that they weren't smart and needed lots of guidance, and that a shepherd's job was to stay close to the sheep, protect them from wild animals and keep them from wandering off and doing dumb things that would get them hurt or killed.

He pointed to the little children in the room and said that they were the sheep and needed lots of guidance.

Then the minister put his hands out to the side, palms up in a dramatic gesture, and with raised eyebrows said to the children, "If you are the sheep then who is the shepherd?" He was pretty obviously indicating himself.

A silence of a few seconds followed. Then a young visitor said, " Jesus, Jesus is the shepherd."

The young priest, obviously caught by surprise, said to the boy, "Well, then, who am I?"

The little boy frowned thoughtfully and then said with a shrug, "I guess you must be a sheep dog."

Psalm 107 (a)  (Desert ..)

O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His great love is without end.

Let them say this, those the Lord has helped, people from east and west, north and south.

Some people wandered in the desert, lost and unable to find their way to safety.

In their hunger and thirst they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and showed them the way to safety.

Let them thank the Lord for his love, for he fills the hungry with good things.

My recording of this reading

Psalm 107 (b)  (Prison ..)

Some people were prisoners in misery and chains, living in darkness and gloom.

In their distress they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and restored their freedom.

Let them thank the Lord for his goodness, for he shatters the iron bars of prisons.

Recording

All our problems, difficulties and trials can be summed up by the four images of this psalm: desert, prison, sickness, storm ...from all of which the Lord rescues us!

Psalm 107 (c) (Sickness ..)

Some people were sick on account of their sins, unable to eat,  and close to death.

They cried to the Lord in their need. He healed them and saved them from the grave.

Let them thank the Lord for his love, for the wonders he does for us.

Recording

Psalm 107 (d) (Storms ..)

Some people sailed to the sea in ships and were caught in terrifying storms.

They cried to the Lord in their need, and he calmed the sea and wind.

Let them thank the Lord for his love, for the wonders he does for us.

Whoever is wise should meditate on these things and reflect on the love of the Lord.

Thank you Lord, for your rescuing love

Daniel 13

A beautiful woman named Susanna was condemned to death on a false charge of immorality.

God stirred Daniel's heart to help Susanna. Daniel confronted Susanna's two accusers, two elderly Jewish men.

Daniel had the two men separated.
He then asked them individually where the alleged crime took place.

One of them said "under a mastic tree." The other said "under an oak tree."

The people then realized the men were lying. The people praised God for giving such wisdom to Daniel.

Susanna was freed. The two men were executed, as required by the Law.

Lord, please help people who have been falsely accused of crimes

Psalm 105

1 Timothy 1.18 - 2.8

Timothy, my son, as I give you advice for practical issues, remember how the church elders prayed over you that you would be a good leader

My first bit of advice is that there should be prayers offered for everyone, especially for kings and others in authority, so that we can live our life of faith in peace and quiet

God wants everyone to be saved and reach full knowledge of the truth

There is only one God, and there is only one mediator between God and humanity, himself a man, Christ Jesus, who sacrificed himself as a ransom for everyone

In every place, I want believers to lift up their hands in reverent prayer

God our Father, through Jesus your Son, I ask a blessing on the leaders of our world, especially the leaders of my own country

John 4.46-53

Jesus went again to Cana in Galilee, where he had changed water into wine. In Cana there was a royal official whose son was dying in his home in the town of Capernaum

The official asked Jesus to go to his home and cure his son. "Sir", he said to Jesus, "come to my house before my child dies". Jesus replied "Go home. Your son will live"

The official believed Jesus and started his journey home. While on the journey,  he was met by his servants who told him the boy was alive and well.  "The fever left him yesterday, they said, "at 1pm"

The father realized that this was the exact time when Jesus had said "Your son will live". The official and all his household then believed in Jesus
