"Same-sex marriage" On
the menu of May 30 and May 31 (below) I lamented the fact that so many
Catholic websites are supporting "same-sex marriage". To the
list of sites can be added Eureka Street
(Australia). Note the cartoon at this
pro "same-sex marriage" article. Also note some of the
comments ...I'm not the only lamenter. "In Massachusetts, California and Ontario, education policy now mandates teaching the homosexual agenda to kids. The Australian Education Union too is ready, having adopted a ‘gender identity’ education policy back in 2006. .....The goal is to eliminate real Christian values" e.g. comment by Marg (May 29): "Did it cross your mind, John Warhurst, that what scripture says on this issue should play some part of what a purportedly Christian person decides? Or do we just go with the flow because the flow must be right?" |
On this day in 2001 Dr Kenneth McAll went home to Heaven. What
he had learnt in China about healing, he
took back to the UK - and helped thousands
of people for whom ordinary medicine ...and ordinary prayers ...could
not help. Whereas normally 15-30 per cent of anorexics die, 84 per cent
of those he treated were cured. Amazon (see comments) |

Psalm
146 Put no trust in princes, in mortal men in whom there is no help. Take their breath, they return to clay, and their plans that day come to nothing. They are happy who are helped by Jacob's God, whose hope is in the Lord our God, who alone made heaven and earth, the seas and all they contain. It is he who gives bread to the hungry, the Lord, who sets prisoners free. It is the Lord who gives sight to the blind, who raises up those who are bowed down. It is the Lord who protects the stranger, and upholds the widow and orphan. It is the Lord who loves the just, but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for ever, Zion's God, from age to age. Lord, please increase my trust and faith in you |
Hebrews 7.1-28 Melchizedek was king of Salem and a priest of God. He blessed Abraham. Abraham gave Melchizedek 10% of all he had Melchizedek's priesthood continued down the ages in people dedicated to the service of God. It reached its perfection in the Son of God, the Eternal High Priest The Son of God, our Lord, did not come from the priestly tribe of Levi. Everyone knows he came from the tribe of Judah This is because he established a new priesthood, coming not from Levi, but from Melchizedek. This is why the prophecy was made of him "You are a priest of the order of Melchizedek, for ever" Jesus' priestly power to save us is utterly certain, since he is living for ever to intercede for all who come to God through him Jesus, Eternal High Priest, please help all pastors and priests be more like you every day

Matthew 3.1-17 About 30 years after Jesus was born, a man began preaching repentance, and baptizing people in the river Jordan. This man was John the
Baptist. John fulfilled the prophecy: "A voice cries in the wilderness: prepare a way for the Lord". John said "I
baptize you with water,
but one is coming who will baptize you with the Holy Spirit". And a voice from heaven
said Jesus, please help me to prepare your way, like John the Baptist |

Here we find the source and inspiration of all our efforts at evangelization. For if we have received the love which restores meaning to our lives, how can we fail to share that love with others?

Jesus' promises in 1675 "Over the top" - the love in Jesus' heart The more we remember Jesus' love, the more we become aware that every one of us has benefited from his over the top love: by protecting us, by rescuing us, by healing us ....from scum situations |
"Same-sex marriage" Many articles about the recent referendum in Ireland point out how voters were influenced by two prominent Catholic women (one a former president, the other a media personality) who spoke in favor of "same-sex marriage". Which suggests that in other countries where the "SSM" debate is going on, the Church might be better served by encouraging prominent lay Christians to speak up for family life ...rather than letting the bishops do the speaking (...especially in places where the Church is in shame mode because of child abuse) |
Today is the anniversary of someone most Catholics have never heard of: Watchman Nee, who died on this day in 1972 in a Shanghai prison. This article I wrote tries to show that Nee's life and teachings hold many valuable lessons for Christianity in all parts of the world

145 The Lord is great, worthy of all praise. His greatness cannot be measured. Age to age shall proclaim your works, shall speak of your splendor and glory. The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all, All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord, and tell all the world of your love. The Lord is faithful in all his words, and loving in all his deeds. The
Lord supports all who fall, The eyes of all creatures look to you, and you give them their food each day. The Lord is close to all who call him, who call on him from their hearts. Let the whole world bless the Lord's holy name, for ever, for ages unending. Thank you, Lord, for your love. Thank you for your love |
May every one of you persevere in your Christian life. Never give up Remember how Abraham persevered in following

text 7. Sometimes we are tempted to find excuses and complain, acting as if we could only be happy if a thousand conditions were met. To some extent this is because our “technological society has succeeded in multiplying occasions of pleasure, yet has found it very difficult to engender joy”. I can say that the most beautiful and natural expressions of joy which I have seen in my life were in poor people who had little to hold on to. I also think of the real joy shown by others who, even amid pressing professional obligations, were able to preserve, in detachment and simplicity, a heart full of faith. In their own way, all these instances of joy flow from the infinite love of God, who has revealed himself to us in Jesus Christ.

I
have mixed feelings about the article below re the Irish referendum on
"
same-sex marriage". Overall, the article is favorable to " same-sex
marriage" .... and this is the worry. The article is in one of the
world's most respected Catholic magazines, The
Tablet. But the implications of "
same-sex marriage" are mind-boggling ...see especially page 13 of this
letter by the Australian bishops. Same-sex marriage is an attack on
the foundation stone of society: the family. Yet so many Catholic
magazines and websites are now supporting such an attack (see
menu of May 30, below). Lord,
have mercy! |
As a prison chaplain I find there's a lot of food for thought in this challenging article: |

text 6. There are Christians whose lives seem like Lent without Easter. I realize of course that joy is not expressed the same way at all times in life, especially at moments of great difficulty. I understand the grief of people who have to endure great suffering, yet slowly but surely we all have to let the joy of faith slowly revive as a quiet yet firm trust, even amid the greatest distress: “My soul is bereft of peace; I have forgotten what happiness is… But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness… It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord” (Lam 3:17, 21-23, 26).

This article in America Magazine Same-Sex Marriage Goes to a Popular Vote in Ireland has published my comment. But other Catholic sites UCANews ("Asia's most trusted independent Catholic news source"???), the Association of Catholic Priests (Ireland) and Crux (USA) would not publish the same comment. Notice how America
does not, like National Catholic Reporter,

text 5. The Gospel constantly invites us to rejoice. A few examples will suffice. “Rejoice!” is the angel’s greeting to Mary (Lk 1:28). Mary’s visit to Elizabeth makes John leap for joy in his mother’s womb (cf. Lk 1:41). In her song of praise, Mary proclaims: “My spirit rejoices in God my Saviour” (Lk 1:47). When Jesus begins his ministry, John cries out: “For this reason, my joy has been fulfilled” (Jn 3:29). Jesus himself “rejoiced in the Holy Spirit” (Lk 10:21). His message brings us joy: “I have said these things to you, so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete” (Jn 15:11). Our
Christian joy drinks of the wellspring of
his brimming heart. He promises his disciples: “You will be sorrowful,
but your sorrow will turn into joy” (Jn
16:20). He then goes on to say: “But I will see you again and your
hearts will rejoice, and no one will take
your joy from you” (Jn 16:22). The
disciples “rejoiced” (Jn 20:20)
at the sight of the risen Christ. In the Acts of the Apostles we read
that the first Christians “ate their food with glad
and generous hearts” (2:46). Wherever the disciples went, “there was
great joy” (8:8); even amid persecution
they continued to be “filled with joy”
(13:52). The newly baptized eunuch “went on his way rejoicing”
(8:39), while Paul’s jailer “and his entire household rejoiced
that he had become a believer in God” (16:34).

text 4: Zechariah, looking to the day of the Lord, invites the people to acclaim the king who comes “humble and riding on a donkey”: “Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he” (9:9). Perhaps the most exciting invitation is that of the prophet Zephaniah, who presents God with his people in the midst of a celebration overflowing with the joy of salvation. I find it thrilling to reread this text: “The Lord, your God is in your midst, a warrior who gives you the victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing, as on a day of festival” (3:17). This is the joy which we experience daily, amid the little things of life, as a response to the loving invitation of God our Father: “My child, treat yourself well, according to your means… Do not deprive yourself of the day’s enjoyment” (Sir 14:11, 14). What tender paternal love echoes in these words! |

text 4. The books of the Old Testament predicted that the joy of salvation would abound in messianic times. The prophet Isaiah exultantly salutes the awaited Messiah: exhorts those who dwell on Zion to go forth to meet him with song: “Shout aloud and sing for joy!” (12:6). The prophet tells those who have already seen him from afar to bring the message to others: “Get you up to a high mountain, O herald of good tidings to Zion; lift up your voice with strength, O herald of good tidings to Jerusalem” (40:9). All creation shares in the joy of salvation: “Sing for joy, O heavens, and exult, O earth! Break forth, O mountains, into singing! For the Lord has comforted his people, and will have compassion on his suffering ones” (49:13). |
