Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
- on care for our common home

42. Greater investment needs to be made in research aimed at understanding more fully the functioning of ecosystems and adequately analyzing the different variables associated with any significant modification of the environment.

Because all creatures are connected, each must be cherished with love and respect, for all of us as living creatures are dependent on one another.

Each area is responsible for the care of this family. This will require undertaking a careful inventory of the species which it hosts, with a view to developing programmes and strategies of protection with particular care for safeguarding species heading towards extinction.

Yesterday I had the joy of helping with bail for two inmates, one from Nigeria, one from Brazil - both asylum seekers - in detention for very minor offences.

It's a particularly special feeling to be carrying release orders from a court house to a detention centre, knowing that in a couple of hours the orders will free the inmates.

Today will see the same joy, because when I broke the good news to the two inmates, they immediately asked me to help a third man, an asylum seeker from India (God bless the kind HK friends who make these acts of compassion possible!)

Exodus 31

God said to Moses:

"The Israelites must make the sabbath a holy day each week,
because the sabbath is a sign between you and me.

Do not do any ordinary work on the sabbath.

Work for six days, then rest on the sabbath.

Consecrate the sabbath to me."

God's words were inscribed on two stone tablets.

Dear God, please help us to make Sunday a holy day

Psalm 81

Ring out your joy to God our strength, shout in triumph to the God of Jacob.

Listen to the voice of the Lord:

"I am the Lord your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt.

Let there be no foreign god among you, no worship of a false god.

O that my people would heed me,
that Israel would walk in my ways.

At once I would subdue their foes. But Israel I would feed with finest wheat and honey".

Lord, please help us to walk in your ways

Revelation 2.8-10

He gave me this message for the church in Smyrna:

"I know the trials you have been through, and how poor you are, and the slanderous attacks that have been made on you.

Do not be afraid of suffering, afraid of prison. Even if you have to die, keep faithful, and I will give you the prize of eternal life"

Jesus, help me stay faithful when I experience trials and suffering

Recommended: check these readings early morning, think about them during the day, check them again at night. This habit gives us extra energy, courage, motivation, peace and compassion for each day

Matthew 20.1-16

Jesus said to his disciples: The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire workers for his vineyard. He agreed to pay them the normal daily wage.

Then about 9am he went again to the market place. He saw more men without a job.  He got them also to go to his vineyard. He promised to pay them a fair wage.

About noon and again about 3pm he once more went to the market place and employed two more groups of men.

About 5pm he went one final time and employed one last group of men.

At sunset when the men came to be paid, the owner paid everyone a normal day's wage.  This made the dawn group unhappy.

They grumbled and said "We have done a full day's work in the heat. Yet we got the same as those who did only one hour's work. This is not fair!"

The owner replied "I am paying you what we agreed to. Why do you begrudge my generosity?"

Jesus, please help me not to be jealous of your gifts to others

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel             Full text

75. We cannot ignore the fact that in cities human trafficking, the narcotics trade, the abuse and exploitation of minors, the abandonment of the elderly and infirm, and various forms of corruption and criminal activity take place.

(Also), what could be significant places of encounter and solidarity often become places of isolation and mutual distrust. Houses and neighbourhoods are more often built to isolate and protect than to connect and integrate.

The proclamation of the Gospel will be a basis for restoring the dignity of human life in these contexts, for Jesus desires to pour out an abundance of life upon our cities.

The unified and complete sense of human life that the Gospel proposes is the best remedy for the ills of our cities, even though we have to realize that a uniform and rigid program of evangelization is not suited to this complex reality.

But to live our human life to the fullest and to meet every challenge as a leaven of Gospel witness in every culture and in every city will make us better Christians and bear fruit in our cities.

Sent by a reader (a lady, not a man) in Australia:

A man on his new motorcycle was riding along a California beach when suddenly the sky clouded above his head and, in a booming voice, God said, 'Because you have tried to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish.'

The biker pulled over and said, 'Build a bridge to Hawaii so I can ride over anytime I want.'

God replied, 'Your request is materialistic, think of the enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking, the supports required reaching the bottom of the Pacific and the concrete and steel it would take!  I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things.  Take a little more time and think of something that could possibly help mankind.'

The biker thought about it for a long time.

Finally, he said, 'God, I wish that I, and all men, could understand a woman.  I want to know how she feels inside, what she's thinking when she gives me the silent treatment, why she cries, what she means when she says nothing's wrong, why she snaps and complains when I try to help, and how I can make a woman truly happy.'

God replied:  "You want two lanes or four lanes on that bridge?"

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
- on care for our common home

41. In tropical and subtropical seas, we find coral reefs comparable to the great forests on dry land, for they shelter approximately a million species, including fish, crabs, molluscs, sponges and algae.

Many of the world’s coral reefs are already barren or in a state of constant decline. “Who turned the wonderworld of the seas into underwater cemeteries bereft of colour and life?”[25]

This phenomenon is due largely to pollution which reaches the sea as the result of deforestation, agricultural monocultures, industrial waste and destructive fishing methods, especially those using cyanide and dynamite. It is aggravated by the rise in temperature of the oceans.

All of this helps us to see that every intervention in nature can have consequences which are not immediately evident, and that certain ways of exploiting resources prove costly in terms of degradation which ultimately reaches the ocean bed itself.

As I walked down Temple Street yesterday  morning on my way to St Paul's Yau Ma Tei for 8.30 Mass I came across a man, aged about 50, lying in great pain on the footpath.

I asked him if he wanted an ambulance and he said yes. As I asked Dr J for help I got another passer by to speak to 999 which I had dialed with my phone. Two other passers by, both ex-inmates who I know well, joined the scene. I got them to continue supporting the man, and I left.

As I rounded the corner of Shanghai Street, an ambulance appeared. It had taken less than five minutes to arrive. And I thought to myself, HK is still one of the best places in the world!

Psalms 79-80

O God, the nations have invaded your sacred land, they have profaned your holy temple. They have made Jerusalem a heap of ruins.

We have become the taunt of our neighbours, the mockery and scorn of those who surround us.

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel             Full text

74. What is called for is an evangelization capable of shedding light on these new ways of relating to God, to others and to the world around us, and inspiring essential values. It must reach the places where new narratives and paradigms are being formed, bringing the word of Jesus to the inmost soul of our cities.

Cities are multicultural; in the larger cities, a connective network is found in which groups of people share a common imagination and dreams about life, and new human interactions arise, new cultures, invisible cities. (But) Various subcultures exist side by side, and often practise segregation and violence.

The Church is called to be at the service of a difficult dialogue. On the one hand, there are people who have the means needed to develop their personal and family lives, but there are also many “non-citizens”, “half citizens” and “urban remnants”.

Cities create a sort of permanent ambivalence because, while they offer their residents countless possibilities, they also present many people with any number of obstacles to the full development of their lives. This contrast causes painful suffering.

In many parts of the world, cities are the scene of mass protests where thousands of people call for freedom, a voice in public life, justice and a variety of other demands which, if not properly understood, will not be silenced by force.

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
- on care for our common home

40. Oceans not only contain the bulk of our planet’s water supply, but also most of the immense variety of living creatures, many of them still unknown to us and threatened for various reasons.

What is more, marine life in rivers, lakes, seas and oceans, which feeds a great part of the world’s population, is affected by uncontrolled fishing, leading to a drastic depletion of certain species.

Selective forms of fishing which discard much of what they collect, continue unabated. Particularly threatened are marine organisms which we tend to overlook, like some forms of plankton; they represent a significant element in the ocean food chain, and species used for our food ultimately depend on them.

Exodus 16

As the Israelites traveled through the desert, they began to complain about not having enough food.

So God rained down bread, manna, from heaven, in the form of a coating of dew which appeared on the ground each morning, as well as flocks of quails which came every evening.

For forty years the Israelites ate manna and quails, bread and birds.

Dear God, thank you for the food we have each day

Psalm 78

The things we have heard and understood, the things our fathers have told us, these we will not hide from our children, but will tell them to the next generation:

the glories of the Lord and his might, and the marvellous deeds he has done; he commanded the clouds above, and opened the gates of heaven.

He rained down manna for their food, and gave them bread from heaven. Mere humans ate the bread of angels. He sent them abundance of food

So he brought them to his holy land, to the mountain which his right hand had won.

Lord, you gave them bread from heaven

73. New cultures are constantly being born in these vast new expanses ((modern cities)) where Christians are no longer the customary interpreters or generators of meaning.

Instead, they themselves take from these cultures new languages, symbols, messages and paradigms which propose new approaches to life, approaches often in contrast with the Gospel of Jesus.

A completely new culture has come to life and continues to grow in the cities. The Synod noted that today the changes taking place in these great spaces and the culture which they create are a privileged locus of the new evangelization.

This challenges us to imagine innovative spaces and possibilities for prayer and communion which are more attractive and meaningful for city dwellers

Through the influence of the media, rural areas are being affected by the same cultural changes, which are significantly altering their way of life as well.

Yet this can seriously compromise a biodiversity which the new species being introduced does not accommodate.

Similarly, wetlands converted into cultivated land lose the enormous biodiversity which they formerly hosted.

Jesus replied "Keep the commandments: do not kill;  do not commit adultery; honor your father and mother; care for others as much as you care about yourself".

The young man said "I have kept all these commandments. What else do I need to do?"

Jesus said "If you want to do something really special with your life, go and sell all your possessions, give the money to the poor, then come and follow me as one of my disciples".

When the young man heard these words he went away sad,

72. In cities, as opposed to the countryside, the religious dimension of life is expressed by different lifestyles (and) daily rhythms linked to places and people.

In their daily lives people must often struggle for survival and this struggle contains within it a profound understanding of life which often includes a deep religious sense.

We must examine this more closely in order to enter into a dialogue like that of our Lord and the Samaritan woman at the well where she sought to quench her thirst (cf. Jn 4:1-15).

38 (b): There are “proposals to internationalize the Amazon, which only serve the economic interests of transnational corporations”.[24]

We cannot fail to praise the commitment of international agencies and civil society organizations which draw public attention to these issues and offer critical cooperation, employing legitimate means of pressure, to ensure that each government carries out its proper and inalienable responsibility to preserve its country’s environment and natural resources, without capitulating to spurious local or international interests.

On yesterday's menu, below, I mentioned how all recent drug mule sentences have been 9 or more years. But yesterday as I accompanied an African inmate in the High Court for sentencing, something different happened:

The sentence handed down for drug trafficking was 20 years and 6 months ...but that was reduced by 50% for pleading guilty and for a number of special reasons ...so the 20.6 became 10.3  and the 10.3 will be reduced by one third for good behaviour.  That means 123 months will become 82 months. And the inmate has already served 15 months in detention, so the 82 becomes 67 = 5 years and 7 months!  DG! Inmate very happy!

Sometimes when I see our world  and religion in ruins, I wonder why has God abandoned us?

Then I remember that God has promised to break the power of the wicked. He has promised to give strength to good people.

So may all people honor the Lord our God and judge. May the Lord give us his loving help.

Lord, you are goodness itself. Please help us to be good and to trust you always

Today's Gospel

Matthew 19.13-15

Some people brought their little children to Jesus. They hoped Jesus would  put his hands on the children and bless them.

Jesus' disciples told the people to go away and not bother Jesus.
But Jesus said "Don't prevent the little children from coming to me".

Then he put his hands on them and blessed them.

Jesus, please help all children to know you from their earliest days. Please don't let parents prevent children from coming to you.

Migrant workers are natural targets for drug barons with an eye out for mules. The desperation of the circumstances in which many find themselves often leaves them easy prey and, as many are not experienced travellers or aware of the possible pitfalls of carrying parcels for unknown, or even known, people, they can land themselves in serious trouble if they are not careful. - in this report:

71. The new Jerusalem, the holy city, is the goal towards which all of humanity is moving. It is (interesting) that God’s revelation tells us that the fullness of humanity and of history is realized in a city.

We need to look at our cities with a contemplative gaze, a gaze of faith which sees God dwelling in their homes, in their streets and squares

God’s presence accompanies the sincere efforts of individuals and groups to find encouragement and meaning in their lives. He dwells among them, fostering solidarity, fraternity, and the desire for goodness, truth and justice.

This presence must not be contrived but found, uncovered. God does not hide himself from those who seek him with a sincere heart, even though they do so tentatively, in a vague and haphazard manner.

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
- on care for our common home

38 (a): Let us mention, for example, those richly biodiverse lungs of our planet which are the Amazon and the Congo basins, and the great aquifers and glaciers. We know how important these are for the entire earth and for the future of humanity.

The ecosystems of tropical forests possess an enormously complex biodiversity which is almost impossible to appreciate fully, yet when these forests are burned down or levelled for purposes of cultivation, within the space of a few years countless species are lost and the areas frequently become arid wastelands.

A delicate balance has to be maintained when speaking about these places, for we cannot overlook the huge global economic interests which, under the guise of protecting them, can undermine the sovereignty of individual nations.

Like the previous day, yesterday was spent at Stanley Prison where I visited dozens of inmates, mainly from Africa. Many of the Africans were sentenced since the start of this year, and, like their comrades from South America (especially Colombia) received prison terms of nine or more years ("after cut") for drug trafficking.

Yet despite their sadness at the prospect of being away from their families for such a long time, they are still keenly interested in news from their own country - especially the Tanzanians who are captivated (so to speak) by the extraordinary political happenings of this week - see story below

Exodus 25

God said to Moses:

"Build me a sacred tent so that I may live among the people.

Let everyone follow the promptings of their heart in making contributions for the building of the temple.

Make a sacred chest (ark) to hold
the stone tablets on which are the Ten Commandments, Aaron's rod and some manna.

Also make a table for the bread of offering, and a golden lamp-stand."

Dear God, thank you for churches and other special places for prayer

Psalm 72

O Lord, please bless the king, that he might serve your people with justice.

May the mountains bring forth peace for the people, and the hills, justice.

The kings of Sheba and Seba bring him gifts. All nations will serve him.

He will save the poor when they cry for help, and the needy who are helpless.

He will have pity on the weak, and save the lives of the poor.

May every tribe be blessed in him.
May every nation bless his name.

Today's Gospel:

Matthew 19.1-9

One day some religious leaders put Jesus to the test by asking him
"Is it against the Law of Moses for a man to divorce his wife?"

Jesus replied "God created male and female, for the two to become united as one body.  What God has united, no one should separate."

The leaders then asked "But why did Moses allow divorce?"

Jesus replied "Moses allowed divorce because people were so hard of heart.  But divorce was not God's plan.

So I say to you, anyone who walks out on their partner and marries someone else, is guilty of adultery"

Jesus, please help married people stay together

70. It is also true that at times greater emphasis is placed on the outward expressions and traditions of some groups, or on alleged private revelations which would replace all else, than on the impulse of Christian piety

There is a kind of Christianity made up of devotions reflecting an individual and sentimental faith life which does not in fact correspond to authentic “popular piety”. Some people promote these expressions while not being in the least concerned with the advancement of society or the formation of the laity, and in certain cases they do so in order to obtain economic benefits or some power over others.

Nor can we overlook the fact that in recent decades there has been a breakdown in the way Catholics pass down the Christian faith to the young. It is undeniable that many people feel disillusioned and no longer identify with the Catholic tradition.

Growing numbers of parents do not bring their children for baptism or teach them how to pray. There is also a certain exodus towards other faith communities. The causes of this breakdown include: a lack of opportunity for dialogue in families, the influence of the communications media, a relativistic subjectivism, unbridled consumerism which feeds the market, lack of pastoral care among the poor, the failure of our institutions to be welcoming, and our difficulty in restoring a mystical adherence to the faith in a pluralistic religious landscape.

Yesterday at Stanley Prison I was able to use the main lift, which has two sets of control buttons, one on each side, with a sign above one set saying "only for use of firemen when firemen-use switch is on". On my previous visit I didn't see that sign, and when the door shut and wouldn't open and lift wouldn't move I rang the emergency bell ....which is not a really great idea in a prison!

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
- on care for our common home

 37. Some countries have made significant progress in establishing sanctuaries on land and in the oceans where any human intervention is prohibited which might modify their features or alter their original structures.

In the protection of biodiversity, specialists insist on the need for particular attention to be shown to areas richer both in the number of species and in endemic, rare or less protected species.

Certain places need greater protection because of their immense importance for the global ecosystem, or because they represent important water reserves and thus safeguard other forms of life.

Many Stanley inmates now have access to copies of Laudato Si!

Yesterday was spent visiting African and other inmates at three prisons which are next to each other:  Stanley, Pak Sha Wan and Tung Tau.

Today I'm hoping to visit more inmates at Stanley Prison.

There are too many inmates in these prisons for me to visit in one day ....and travelling to and from Stanley is very time consuming ...so l spent last night at the Maryknoll Centre in Stanley.

Exodus 24

God invited Moses, Aaron, Nadab and 70 other men to see him face to face.

They saw God face to face and ate and drank in his presence.

Under God's feet the ground was like a pure blue jewel.

God then invited Moses to go up the mountain.

A cloud covered the mountain and for 6 days the glory of the Lord settled on the mountain.

On the seventh day God spoke with Moses inside the cloud.

Moses stayed on the mountain for about 40 days.

It is you, O Lord, who are my hope. In you I have trusted since I was young.

From my mother's womb you have been my help. My hope has always been in you.

Now that I am old, please do not forget me. Now that my strength fails, do not abandon me.

Now that I am old and grey-headed, may I continue to trust in you and proclaim your help.

(Today: Feast of Saint Martha)

Luke 10.38-42
Jesus came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord’s feet and listened to him speaking.

Now Martha, who was distracted with all the serving said, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself? Please tell her to help me.’

But the Lord answered: ‘Martha, Martha,’ he said ‘you worry and fret about so many things, and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part; it is not to be taken from her.’

Jesus, please help me stop "worrying and fretting"

69. It is imperative to evangelize cultures in order to inculturate the Gospel.

In countries of Catholic tradition, this means encouraging, fostering and reinforcing a richness which already exists.

In countries of other religious traditions, or profoundly secularized countries, it will mean sparking new processes for evangelizing culture, even though these will demand long-term planning.

We must keep in mind, however, that we are constantly being called to grow. Each culture and social group needs purification and growth.

In the case of the popular cultures of Catholic peoples, we can see deficiencies which need to be healed by the Gospel: machismo, alcoholism, domestic violence, low Mass attendance, fatalistic or superstitious notions which lead to sorcery, and the like. Popular piety itself can be the starting point for healing and liberation from these deficiencies.

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
- on care for our common home

36. Caring for ecosystems demands far-sightedness, since no one looking for quick and easy profit is truly interested in their preservation.

But the cost of the damage caused by such selfish lack of concern is much greater than the economic benefits to be obtained.

Where certain species are destroyed or seriously harmed, the values involved are incalculable.

We can be silent witnesses to terrible injustices if we think that we can obtain significant benefits by making the rest of humanity, present and future, pay the extremely high costs of environmental deterioration.

See "Pope's climate change letter .... and HK" - below - "Ming Pao"

Large part of yesterday was spent with a journalist and cameraman doing documentary on overseas inmates in HK prisons. Hope the program has the same effect as the Tanzania campaign: a drastic slowdown in the number of inmates being imprisoned in HK.

Save me, O God, for the waters have risen to my neck. I am sinking fast and can't keep afloat much longer.

So many people hate me without cause. I have no more strength to resist them.

May my situation not cause anyone to lose faith in you. May people realize that it is for your sake that I am taunted.

Taunts have broken my heart. No one shows me any compassion.

 Matthew 18. 21-35

Peter asked Jesus "How many times must I forgive someone? 7 times?"  Jesus answered "Not 7, but 77 times.

For the kingdom of heaven is like a king who cancelled the huge debt of one of his servants.

But that same servant refused to cancel the tiny debt of one of his fellow servants.

So the king said to the servant:
'When you appealed to me, I had pity on you and cancelled your big debt.  But you refused to have pity on your fellow servant who asked you for mercy. Therefore you must now go to prison until your big debt is paid.'

If you refuse to forgive other people, you are making yourself ineligible for God's forgiveness."

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel             Full text

 68. The Christian substratum of certain peoples – most of all in the West – is a living reality. Here we find, especially among the most needy, a moral resource which preserves the values of an authentic Christian humanism.

Seeing reality with the eyes of faith, we cannot fail to acknowledge what the Holy Spirit is sowing. It would show a lack of trust in his free and unstinting activity to think that authentic Christian values are absent where great numbers of people have received baptism and express their faith and solidarity with others in a variety of ways.

This means more than acknowledging occasional “seeds of the word”, since it has to do with an authentic Christian faith which has its own expressions and means of showing its relationship to the Church.

The immense importance of a culture marked by faith cannot be overlooked; before the onslaught of contemporary secularism, an evangelized culture, for all its limits, has many more resources than the mere sum total of believers.

An evangelized popular culture contains values of faith and solidarity capable of encouraging the development of a more just and believing society, and possesses a particular wisdom which ought to be gratefully acknowledged.
