Imitating Pope Francis

  Tuesday September 29

Well, Pope Francis is now safely back in Rome. Thank you, God, for giving him a safe trip to Cuba and the US! He's certainly the number one sign of hope in our troubled world

May the Lord continue to bless him with good health, courage and wisdom .... and as many years as possible before retirement

For me his speech to the US Congress was the most moving of all his addresses. As The Guardian put it: Pope electrifies Congress with speech laying out bold vision for US

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
     我主應受讚美

90. This is not to put all living beings on the same level nor to deprive human beings of their unique worth and the tremendous responsibility it entails. Nor does it imply a divinization of the earth which would prevent us from working on it and protecting it in its fragility. Such notions would end up creating new imbalances which would deflect us from the reality which challenges us.[68]

At times we see an obsession with denying any pre-eminence to the human person; more zeal is shown in protecting other species than in defending the dignity which all human beings share in equal measure.

Certainly, we should be concerned lest other living beings be treated irresponsibly. But we should be particularly indignant at the enormous inequalities in our midst, whereby we continue to tolerate some considering themselves more worthy than others.

We fail to see that some are mired in desperate and degrading poverty, with no way out, while others have not the faintest idea of what to do with their possessions, vainly showing off their supposed superiority and leaving behind them so much waste which, if it were the case everywhere, would destroy the planet. In practice, we continue to tolerate that some consider themselves more human than others, as if they had been born with greater rights.

Readings for Feast of the angels
Michael, Gabriel, Raphael

Tobit 12 (Raphael):

When Tobit's banquet was finished, Tobit wanted to thank Raphael for all his help.

Only then did Raphael tell Tobit and Tobias that he was an angel sent by God to help them.

"I am Raphael, one of the 7 angels who stand ever ready to enter the presence of the glory of the Lord.

Never tire of giving God thanks.
And never tire of helping the poor."

Raphael farewelled them, rose in the air, and left them. They praised and thanked God for all he had done for them.

My recording of this reading

Psalm 138:

I thank you, Lord, with all my heart. You have heard the words of my mouth.

With the angels I will bless you.
I will adore you in your holy temple.

I thank you for your faithfulness and love which are far above what we can understand.

On the day I called you answered.
You increased the strength of my soul.

All earth's kings shall thank you
when they hear the words of your mouth.

They shall sing of the Lord's ways: "How great is the glory of the Lord!"

Michael

Revelation 12  (Michael):

Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought the dragon and his angels

Michael won. Satan and his followers were driven out of heaven

The great dragon, the serpent, known as the Devil or Satan,
was hurled down to earth. His angels were hurled down with him

The dragon began to make war on the children of the Woman - those who obey God and bear witness to Jesus

Gabriel

Luke 1 (Gabriel):

In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel
Gabriel to the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named Joseph

The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed by God. You are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of God"

Mary said to the angel, "How can this happen since I am a virgin?"

The angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her old age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth  month"

"I am the handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have said, be done for me".  And the angel left her

128 (b): At times the message can be presented directly, at times by way of a personal witness or gesture, or in a way which the Holy Spirit may suggest in that particular situation.

If it seems prudent and if the circumstances are right, this fraternal and missionary encounter could end with a brief prayer related to the concerns which the person may have expressed.

In this way they will have an experience of being listened to and understood; they will know that their particular situation has been placed before God, and that God’s word really speaks to their lives.

Hong Kong media have noted that Xi’s speech at the UN was not as popular as it was depicted in the Chinese media. Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
     我主應受讚美

89. The created things of this world are not free of ownership: “For they are yours, O Lord, who love the living” (Wis 11:26).

This is the basis of our conviction that, as part of the universe, called into being by one Father, all of us are linked by unseen bonds and together form a kind of universal family, a sublime communion which fills us with a sacred, affectionate and humble respect.

Here I would reiterate that “God has joined us so closely to the world around us that we can feel the desertification of the soil almost as a physical ailment, and the extinction of a species as a painful disfigurement”.[67]

Numbers 26-27 (b)

As Moses neared the end of his life, he asked God for someone to succeed him as leader.

Today's Gospel

Acts 4.13-22

The religious leaders were astonished that two uneducated men like Peter and John could speak so confidently. The leaders also realized that a miracle had taken place: the crippled man was standing next to  Peter and John

The leaders gave Peter and John a formal legal warning not to speak in future about Jesus

Peter and John replied "Which is right? To obey you, or obey God? We cannot stop proclaiming what we have seen and heard"

The leaders released the two apostles. They were afraid to punish them since all the people were giving glory to God for the miracle that had happened

Jesus, please help me obey you always

Mark 4.35-41

Jesus and his disciples got into a boat to cross the lake.

Jesus was so tired that he went to sleep in the boat. A sudden storm caused big waves to lash the boat.

Jesus' friends woke him up and said "Save us, Lord, we are sinking".

Jesus stood up, and ordered the wind and sea to be calm. Straight away the wind and sea were calm.

Jesus' friends said to each other
"Who is this? Even the wind and sea obey him."

Jesus, please calm the storms in my life, my family, our world

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel             Full text

128 (a): In this preaching, which is always respectful and gentle, the first step is personal dialogue, when the other person speaks and shares his or her joys, hopes and concerns for loved ones, or so many other heartfelt needs.

Only afterwards is it possible to bring up God’s word, perhaps by reading a Bible verse or relating a story, but always keeping in mind the fundamental message: the personal love of God who became man, who gave himself up for us, who is living and who offers us his salvation and his friendship

This message has to be shared humbly as a testimony on the part of one who is always willing to learn, in the awareness that the message is so rich and so deep that it always exceeds our grasp

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
- on care for our common home

88. The bishops of Brazil have pointed out that nature as a whole not only manifests God but is also a locus of his presence.

The Spirit of life dwells in every living creature and calls us to enter into relationship with him.[65]

Discovering this presence leads us to cultivate the “ecological virtues”.[66]

This is not to forget that there is an infinite distance between God and the things of this world, which do not possess his fullness.

Otherwise, we would not be doing the creatures themselves any good either, for we would be failing to acknowledge their right and proper place. We would end up unduly demanding of them something which they, in their smallness, cannot give us.

Pope warns the UN - We won’t always have Paris

Pope demands UN respect rights of environment over 'thirst for power'

For Ban Ki-Moon, the UN secretary-general, the pope has proved a formidable ally in the faltering efforts to reach a deal to fight climate change. After his address, the swell of optimism was almost palpable among those who hope he can inject fresh momentum to the Paris talks.

“Pope Francis has once again reminded world leaders that alleviating poverty and preserving the environment are part of the same struggle,” Greenpeace said in a statement.

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel             Full text

127. Today, as the Church seeks to experience a profound missionary renewal, there is a kind of preaching which falls to each of us as a daily responsibility. It has to do with bringing the Gospel to the people we meet, whether they be our neighbours or complete strangers.

This is the informal preaching which takes place in the middle of a conversation, something along the lines of what a missionary does when visiting a home.

Being a disciple means being constantly ready to bring the love of Jesus to others, and this can happen unexpectedly and in any place: on the street, in a city square, during work, on a journey.

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
     我主應受讚美

87. When we can see God reflected in all that exists, our hearts are moved to praise the Lord for all his creatures and to worship him in union with them. This sentiment finds magnificent expression in the hymn of Saint Francis of Assisi:

Praised be you, my Lord, with all your creatures, especially Sir Brother Sun, who is the day and through whom you give us light. And he is beautiful and radiant with great splendour; and bears a likeness of you, Most High.

Praised be you, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars, in heaven you formed them clear and precious and beautiful.

Praised be you, my Lord, through Brother Wind, and through the air, cloudy and serene, and every kind of weather through whom you give sustenance to your creatures.

Praised be you, my Lord, through Sister Water, who is very useful and humble and precious and chaste.

Praised be you, my Lord, through Brother Fire, through whom you light the night, and he is beautiful and playful and robust and strong”.[64]

Numbers 26-27 (a)

Moses made a census of all the men in the community. The total number was 624,730.

Moses also gave a ruling concerning inheritance:
"If a man dies without sons, his inheritance is to pass to his daughters.

If he has no daughter, the inheritance is to go to his brothers. If he has no brother,
it is to go to his father's brothers.
If his father has no brothers, it is to go to the member of his clan who is his closest relative".

One day Jesus told the people this story:

A farmer was planting seeds in his field. Some seeds fell on the path. Birds ate them.

Some seeds fell among thorns. When they became plants, they were choked by the thorns.

Some seeds fell on good soil and produced a rich harvest.

Mark 4.1-20 (b)

Jesus explained the story:
People who hear God's word without good will
are like the seeds on the path.
They are easy prey for Satan.

People who hear God's word only superficially
are like the seeds on rocky ground.
As soon as difficulties come, such people easily give up.

People who hear God's word with one ear
but with the other are listening to the call of greed and pleasure
are like the seeds among thorns. Greed kills the word.

People who hear God's word with good will and put it into practice
are like the good seeds which produced a rich harvest.

Jesus, please help me be good seed!

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel             Full text

126. Underlying popular piety, as a fruit of the inculturated Gospel, is an active evangelizing power which we must not underestimate: to do so would be to fail to recognize the work of the Holy Spirit.

Instead, we are called to promote and strengthen it, in order to deepen the never-ending process of inculturation. Expressions of popular piety have much to teach us; for those who are capable of reading them, they are a locus theologicus which demands our attention, especially at a time when we are looking to the new evangelization.

At the entrance to East 72nd Street, the pope’s temporary address, a secret service man wearing the obligatory shades, ear piece and ill-fitting suit, turned away everyone apart from residents, who were given a once-over with a detector wand. He agreed the pope was having a busy day, but reckoned he’d be more tired than the pontiff by the end of his shift. “The pope doesn’t need sleep, he runs on prayers,” he said.  (- from this report)

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
     我主應受讚美

86. The universe as a whole, in all its manifold relationships, shows forth the inexhaustible riches of God.

Saint Thomas Aquinas wisely noted that multiplicity and variety “come from the intention of the first agent” who willed that “what was wanting to one in the representation of the divine goodness might be supplied by another”,[60] inasmuch as God’s goodness “could not be represented fittingly by any one creature”.[61]

Hence we need to grasp the variety of things in their multiple relationships.[62] We understand better the importance and meaning of each creature if we contemplate it within the entirety of God’s plan.

As the Catechism teaches: “God wills the interdependence of creatures. The sun and the moon, the cedar and the little flower, the eagle and the sparrow: the spectacle of their countless diversities and inequalities tells us that no creature is self-sufficient. Creatures exist only in dependence on each other, to complete each other, in the service of each other”.[63]

For a while the Israelites settled  in the area of Shittim.

In that place the Israelite men
gave themselves over to debauchery with the women of Midian.

The Israelites joined these women in sacrifices to local idols.

God therefore sent a plague to punish the Israelites, and thousands of people died.

God commanded Moses to execute Israelites who had taken part in sacrifices to local idols.

Phinehas the priest, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron showed his loyalty and zeal by personally executing one of the main offenders, at a time when most people didn't care what was happening.

Lord, when I'm worried or  in trouble, your word revives me and gives me strength.

Lord, keep my eyes from what is false. Bend my heart to your word and not to love of gain.

The word from your mouth means more to me than silver and gold.

The unfolding of your word gives light and teaches simple people.

Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, replied "The cripple is able to stand up perfectly healthy because he was healed by Jesus the Nazarene, the one you crucified, whom God raised from the dead

Salvation comes no other way. Only by the name of Jesus can we be saved"

Jesus, your name means "God saves", you are indeed the Saviour of the world

Mark 3.20-21; 31-35

Jesus went back to Capernaum. Such a crowd gathered that he could not even have a meal

When his family heard about such things, they set out to take care of  him, thinking that he was crazy.

His mother and brothers arrived at the house. Standing outside, they sent in a message asking for him.

Jesus was told "Your mother and brothers and sisters are outside asking for you".  Jesus replied "Who are my mother and brothers?".

Then looking round at the people sitting in a circle about him, he said "Here are my mother and my brothers. Anyone who does the will of God, that person is my brother and sister and mother".

Jesus, please help me to do your will, even if people sometimes think I'm crazy

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel      Full text

125. To understand this reality (popular piety) we need to approach it with the gaze of the Good Shepherd, who seeks not to judge but to love. Only from the affective connaturality born of love can we appreciate the theological life present in the piety of Christian peoples, especially among their poor.

I think of the steadfast faith of those mothers tending their sick children who, though perhaps barely familiar with the articles of the creed, cling to a rosary; or of all the hope poured into a candle lit in a humble home with a prayer for help from Mary, or in the gaze of tender love directed to Christ crucified.

No one who loves God’s holy people will view these actions as the expression of a purely human search for the divine. They are the manifestation of a theological life nourished by the working of the Holy Spirit who has been poured into our hearts.

A visibly nervous House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) greeted Pope Francis just before 9:30 a.m. Francis complimented Boehner’s green tie, calling it “the color of hope.” Boehner replied, “We’ll need a lot of hope today.” The speaker, who is Catholic, has been trying to get a pope to speak to Congress for the past 20 years. Francis is the first to accept his invitation.

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
     我主應受讚美

85 (b): This contemplation of creation allows us to discover in each thing a teaching which God wishes to hand on to us, since “for the believer, to contemplate creation is to hear a message, to listen to a paradoxical and silent voice”.[57]

We can say that “alongside revelation properly so-called, contained in sacred Scripture, there is a divine manifestation in the blaze of the sun and the fall of night”.[58]

Paying attention to this manifestation, we learn to see ourselves in relation to all other creatures: “I express myself in expressing the world; in my effort to decipher the sacredness of the world, I explore my own”.[59]

When Balaam came to the king of Moab, the king again tried to get Balaam to curse the Israelites.

But Balaam followed God's words and said: "How can I curse people that God does not curse?

These people are specially  blessed by God. How beautiful are your tents, O Jacob. How lovely are your dwellings, O Israel.

From you will come a mighty one
who will reign over countless peoples. A star from Jacob will be leader".

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel             Full text

124. The Aparecida Document describes the riches which the Holy Spirit pours forth in popular piety by his gratuitous initiative. On that beloved continent, where many Christians express their faith through popular piety, the bishops also refer to it as “popular spirituality” or “the people’s mysticism”.

It is truly “a spirituality incarnated in the culture of the lowly”. Nor is it devoid of content; rather it discovers and expresses that content more by way of symbols than by discursive reasoning, and in the act of faith greater accent is placed on credere in Deum than on credere Deum.

It is “a legitimate way of living the faith, a way of feeling part of the Church and a manner of being missionaries”; it brings with itself the grace of being a missionary, of coming out of oneself and setting out on pilgrimage:

“Journeying together to shrines and taking part in other manifestations of popular piety, also by taking one’s children or inviting others, is in itself an evangelizing gesture”. Let us not stifle or presume to control this missionary power!

85 (a): God has written a precious book, “whose letters are the multitude of created things present in the universe”.[54]

The Canadian bishops rightly pointed out that no creature is excluded from this manifestation of God: “From panoramic vistas to the tiniest living form, nature is a constant source of wonder and awe. It is also a continuing revelation of the divine”.[55]

The bishops of Japan, for their part, made a thought-provoking observation: “To sense each creature singing the hymn of its existence is to live joyfully in God’s love and hope”.[56]

Numbers 21-22 (b)

The king of Moab wanted to attack the Israelites, but before attacking, he consulted Balaam son of Beor who was a type of prophet and could see the future.

Several times the king asked Balaam to curse the Israelites, but each time he blessed them,  because this is what God told him to do: "You are not to curse this people, for they are blessed".

The king then summoned Balaam to his presence. Balaam began his journey to the king, travelling on a donkey.

God sent an angel with a sword to block Balaam's way. The donkey could see the angel, so she left the road to make a detour.

Numbers 21-22 (c)

Balaam hit her and made her return to the road. On the road the donkey again saw the angel and just lay down on the road.

Balaam was very angry and hit her with a stick. Then God made the donkey speak: "Why did you hit me?  Haven't I always been faithful to you?"

God now opened Balaam's eyes
and he saw the angel with a sword. Balaam realized that the donkey had saved his life.

The angel then told Balaam to continue his journey, but to say to the king only what God said to say.

Dear God, please stop people from being cruel to animals

Acts 3.1-10

One afternoon about 3pm, Peter and John went to the Temple for prayer. A beggar asked them for money. He was crippled from birth

Peter said to him "I don't have any silver or gold. But I do have something to give you: in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!"

Peter then took him by the hand and helped him to stand up. Immediately, his feet and ankles became firm and he could walk.
He was so happy he started jumping around. He went into the Temple, praising God

123. Popular piety enables us to see how the faith, once received, becomes embodied in a culture and is constantly passed on. Once looked down upon, popular piety came to be appreciated once more in the decades following the Council.

In the Exhortation Evangelii Nuntiandi, Pope Paul VI gave a decisive impulse in this area. There he stated that popular piety “manifests a thirst for God which only the poor and the simple can know” and that “it makes people capable of generosity and sacrifice even to the point of heroism, when it is a question of bearing witness to belief”.

Closer to our own time, Benedict XVI, speaking about Latin America, pointed out that popular piety is “a precious treasure of the Catholic Church”, in which “we see the soul of the Latin American peoples”.

During a phone call on Monday, President Obama told Chinese President Xi Jinping that he wants U.S.-Chinese relations defined by more cooperation and communication. A message that may have been better received if Obama hadn’t called Xi collect.

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
     我主應受讚美

84.  Our insistence that each human being is an image of God should not make us overlook the fact that each creature has its own purpose. None is superfluous.

The entire material universe speaks of God’s love, his boundless affection for us. Soil, water, mountains: everything is, as it were, a caress of God.

The history of our friendship with God is always linked to particular places which take on an intensely personal meaning; we all remember places, and revisiting those memories does us much good.

Anyone who has grown up in the hills or used to sit by a spring to drink, or played outdoors in a neighbourhood square; going back to these places is a chance to recover something of their true selves.

Francis went “Pope Unplugged” for the afternoon, discarding his prepared speeches (to the chagrin of journalists and editors everywhere). He instead spoke from the heart on poverty, disability, and faith to clergy and young people.

“Richness impoverishes you; it takes away from us the best we have. It makes us poor in the only richness which is worthy: trust in God.”

As the Israelites continued their journey, a number of kings did battle with them.

Today's Gospel

Acts 2.37-47

The crowd was deeply moved by Peter's words, and asked "What should we do?"  Peter replied "You must repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then you too will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit". That day about 3,000 people were baptized

These remained faithful to the teaching of the apostles, to a life of sharing and caring, to the Breaking of Bread, and to prayer

Many miracles were worked by the apostles, and this made a deep impression on everyone. Each day the Lord added new members to their group

Jesus, please help me remain faithful to the Christian way of life

Mark 3.1-6

Jesus again went to a prayer hall on the Sabbath. In the hall was a man with a withered hand.

The religious leaders were watching Jesus to see if he would heal on the Sabbath, hoping for something to use against him.

Jesus said to the man with the withered hand "Stand in the middle of the hall".  Then he said to the religious leaders "Is it against the law on the Sabbath to do good?"

They remained silent. Grieved that they were so obstinate, Jesus looked angrily round at them, and said to the man "Stretch out your hand".

He stretched it out and it was healed. The leaders left and began to plot how to get rid of Jesus.

Jesus, don't let my heart become obstinate

One can say that a people continuously evangelizes itself”.  Herein lies the importance of popular piety, a true expression of the spontaneous missionary activity of the people of God. This is an ongoing and developing process, of which the Holy Spirit is the principal agent.
