It can
be said that many problems of today’s world stem from the
tendency, at times unconscious, to make the method and aims of
science and technology an epistemological paradigm which shapes
the lives of individuals and the workings of society.
The
effects of imposing this model on reality as a whole, human and
social, are seen in the deterioration of the environment, but
this is just one sign of a reductionism which affects every
aspect of human and social life.
We
have to accept that technological products are not neutral, for
they create a framework which ends up conditioning lifestyles
and shaping social possibilities along the lines dictated by the
interests of certain powerful groups.
Decisions
which may seem purely instrumental are in reality decisions
about the kind of society we want to build.

Yesterday
I made the long trip to Shek Pik Prison on Lantau Island to
visit Tanzanian inmates ...about a dozen of them .... all keenly
following events leading up Tanzania's general election on
October 25.....some events more worrying than others ... like
this one:
Frustration grows
over missing names on voters’ list (one of many
tactics used by govt party to keep power)

Deuteronomy
16-18
Moses' teaching:
"Remember the special feasts and days that you must observe.
Appoint judges for the people. Do not pervert the law.
You must be fair, you must not take bribes.
No bribes, no corruption.
Do not practise divination, soothsaying.
No one may be an augur or sorcerer.
Do not use charms, do not consult ghosts or spirits.
Instead, be entirely faithful to the Lord your God."
Dear
Lord, please help people avoid
astrology and fortune tellers

Psalm
145
I will give you glory, O God my king.
I will bless your name day after day.
The Lord is great, worthy of all praise.
His greatness cannot be measured.
Age to age shall proclaim your works,
shall speak of your splendor and glory.
The Lord is kind and full of compassion,
slow to anger, abounding in love.
How good is the Lord to all,
compassionate to all his creatures.
All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord,
and tell all the world of your love.
The Lord is faithful in all his words
and loving in all his deeds.
The Lord supports all who fall
and raises all who are bowed down.
The eyes of all creatures look to you
and you give them their food each day.
The Lord is close to all who call him,
who call on him from their hearts.
Let the whole world bless the Lord's holy
name,
for ever, for ages unending.

Acts 10.1-48
Cornelius was a Roman centurion stationed in
the town of Caesarea.
He and his household prayed, loved God, and helped the local people
One morning Cornelius had a vision that Peter
would visit him.
In another town, Peter was instructed by the Lord to visit Cornelius
Peter preached God's message to Cornelius and
his household.
While Peter was speaking, the Holy Spirit came down on all the listeners
Jewish believers who had accompanied
Peter were astonished
that the Holy Spirit would come down on non-Jewish people
Holy Spirit, please come down on all peoples
everywhere!

Mark
9.38-41
Jesus' apostle John, said "Master,
we saw a man who is not one of our group casting out devils in your name.
Because he was not one of us, we tried to stop him"
Jesus said "You must not stop him. No one
who works a miracle in my name is going to speak evil of me. Anyone who is
not against us
is for us
In fact, even someone who gives you a cup of
water to drink because you belong to me, will be rewarded"
Jesus, please help me stop
dividing people into "us and them"

Preparation
for preaching is so important a task that a prolonged time of
study, prayer, reflection and pastoral creativity should be
devoted to it.
With
great affection I wish to stop for a moment and offer a
method of preparing homilies. Some may find these
suggestions self-evident, but I consider it helpful to offer
them as a way of emphasizing the need to
devote quality time to this precious ministry.
Some
pastors argue that such preparation is not possible given the
vast number of tasks which they must perform; nonetheless, I
presume to ask that each week a sufficient portion of personal
and community time be dedicated to this task, even if less time
has to be given to other important activities.
Trust
in the Holy Spirit who is at work during the homily is not
merely passive but active and creative. It demands that
we offer ourselves and all our abilities as instruments which
God can use. A preacher who does not
prepare is not “spiritual”; he is dishonest and
irresponsible with the gifts he has received.
