Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
     我主應受讚美

123 (b):  In the absence of objective truths or sound principles other than the satisfaction of our own desires and immediate needs, what limits can be placed on human trafficking, organized crime, the drug trade, commerce in blood diamonds, and the fur of endangered species?

Is it not the same relativistic logic which justifies buying the organs of the poor for resale or use in experimentation, or eliminating children because they are not what their parents wanted?

This same “use and throw away” logic generates so much waste, because of the disordered desire to consume more than what is really necessary.

We should not think that political efforts or the force of law will be sufficient to prevent actions which affect the environment because, when the culture itself is corrupt and objective truth and universally valid principles are no longer upheld, then laws can only be seen as arbitrary impositions or obstacles to be avoided.

Joshua 8

Once again the Israelites attacked the town of Ai, this time with a special strategy:

5,000 men went by night to the back of the town and hid themselves in the nearby hills.

In the morning Joshua and the rest of the people marched towards the front of Ai.

When the king of Ai saw them coming, he led his people out for battle.

In chasing the Israelites, the king of Ai left his town undefended.

Then the 5,000 Israelites attacked
Ai from the rear and set it on fire.

When the men of Ai looked back and saw their town on fire, they realized they were caught in a trap.

The Israelites easily won the battle
and captured Ai.

Dear Lord, please give leaders the courage of Joshua

Psalm 6

Have mercy on me, Lord, I have no strength. My body is racked with pain. Please heal me, Lord.

I am exhausted with my groaning.
Every night my pillow is covered  with tears.

Lord, please hear my prayer.

Dear Lord, please help people

Acts 16.16-24

One day we met a slave girl who made a lot of money for her owners by telling fortunes. The girl followed us each day shouting "These are the servants of God"

Paul said to the spirit possessing her "I order you, in the name of Jesus Christ, to leave her". The spirit immediately left her, but her owners were angry that she could no longer tell fortunes.

The owners seized Paul and Silas and dragged them to court, saying to the magistrate "These people are causing a disturbance in our city". A crowd supported the owners in calling for their punishment.

They were given many lashes and put into prison with their feet in irons

Jesus, please help Christians who are suffering in prison
because they announced your message

 Mark 14.53-65

The men who arrested Jesus took him to a meeting of the religious leaders. The leaders wanted to condemn Jesus to death, even if they had to use false evidence

Jesus remained silent before their accusations.

Then the main leader challenged Jesus: "Are you the Saviour, the Son of God?"

Jesus replied "I am". The leader then called out "We have heard him claim to be of Divine origin. This is blasphemy"

The rest of the leaders shouted "He should die". Then they spat in Jesus' face and hit him with their fists

Jesus, thank you for submitting yourself to insult and spittle
for the salvation of the world

 159. Another feature of a good homily is that it is positive. It is not so much concerned with pointing out what shouldn’t be done, but with suggesting what we can do better.

In any case, if it does draw attention to something negative, it will also attempt to point to a positive and attractive value, lest it remain mired in complaints, laments, criticisms and reproaches.

Positive preaching always offers hope, points to the future, does not leave us trapped in negativity. How good it is when priests, deacons and the laity gather periodically to discover resources which can make preaching more attractive!

Laudato Si
     我主應受讚美

123 (a):  The culture of relativism is the same disorder which drives one person to take advantage of another, to treat others as mere objects, imposing forced labour on them or enslaving them to pay their debts.

The same kind of thinking leads to the sexual exploitation of children, and abandonment of the elderly who no longer serve our interests.

It is also the mindset of those who say: Let us allow the invisible forces of the market to regulate the economy, and consider their impact on society and nature as collateral damage.

Joshua 7

The Lord had told the Israelites
not to keep anything for themselves when they captured Jericho.

But one man disobeyed the Lord
and secretly kept some of the spoils.

As a result of that man's disobedience, the Israelites were defeated in battle when they attacked the town of Ai.

The disobedient man's identity was found by drawing of the lot:
- of the 12 tribes, one was chosen, the tribe of Judah.
- of the tribe of Judah, one clan was chosen, that of Zerah.
- of the families of Zerah, one was chosen, that of Zabdi.
- of the men of Zabdi, one was chosen, Achan.

Achan admitted his guilt. He and his whole family were then stoned to death and a great cairn built over them. All of Achan's possessions were burnt.

Dear Lord, please don't let me disobey you

My recording of this reading

Psalm  5

At the start of this day I pray to you, O Lord, my King and my God.

I offer you my prayer and ask for your help.

Through the greatness of your love, I have access to your friendship.

I bow down in reverence and worship.

Lead me, Lord, in the way you want me to go.

It is you, Lord, who bless good people.

You surround them with favors, as with a shield.

Lord, I adore you as my Creator

Acts 16.11-15

We went to a number of towns in Macedonia.

In Philippi, the Jews had no prayer hall. They met on the river bank.

We went there one Sabbath and preached to the women who were meeting there

One of these women was Lydia. The Lord opened her heart to what Paul was saying.

She and her whole household were baptized

Jesus, open the hearts of more people to accept your word

Mark 14.43-52

While Jesus was still speaking, Judas arrived. Judas had with him a large crowd of men with swords and clubs, sent by the religious leaders

Judas had told these men "The one I kiss is the man. Take him".
So Judas went to Jesus and said  "Teacher" and kissed him. The men  then seized Jesus

Jesus said to them "Am I a robber that you needed to capture me with swords and clubs?  Day after day I was openly teaching in the Temple"

All the apostles then deserted him and ran away

Jesus, when  I am being treated unfairly by other people, please give me strength

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel             Full text

158 (b): The greatest risk for a preacher is that he becomes so accustomed to his own language that he thinks that everyone else naturally understands and uses it. If we wish to adapt to people’s language and to reach them with God’s word, we need to share in their lives and pay loving attention to them.

Simplicity and clarity are two different things. Our language may be simple but our preaching not very clear. It can end up being incomprehensible because it is disorganized, lacks logical progression or tries to deal with too many things at one time. We need to ensure, then, that the homily has thematic unity, clear order and correlation between sentences, so that people can follow the preacher easily and grasp his line of argument.

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
- on care for our common home

122.  A misguided anthropocentrism leads to a misguided lifestyle.

In the Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, I noted that the practical relativism typical of our age is “even more dangerous than doctrinal relativism”.[99]

When human beings place themselves at the centre, they give absolute priority to immediate convenience and all else becomes relative.

Hence we should not be surprised to find, in conjunction with the omnipresent technocratic paradigm and the cult of unlimited human power, the rise of a relativism which sees everything as irrelevant unless it serves one’s own immediate interests.

There is a logic in all this whereby different attitudes can feed on one another, leading to environmental degradation and social decay.

c.f. Readings for "Sunday 32"

1 Kings 17

When Ahab was king of Israel, in the 9th century B.C., Elijah was a prophet of the Lord.

Elijah told Ahab there would be no rain for a long time because the people were following the cult of Baal.

Elijah did miracles in the name of the Lord: he blessed a poor widow's food to make it increase,
and he brought back to life a young boy who had died.

Dear God, please bless our prayers as you blessed the prayers of Elijah

My recording of this reading

Psalm 146

It is the Lord who gives sight to the blind, who raises up those who are bowed down.

It is the Lord who protects the stranger and upholds the widow and orphan.

It is the Lord who loves the just
but thwarts the path of the wicked.

The Lord will reign for ever,
Zion's God, from age to age.

David is a member of Catholics for Renewal, which first published this article

The Jesus Movement Part IV  - Paul, His Gospel and Mission

David recounts the basis of Paul’s conviction that the Jesus Movement would only achieve credibility, attract and hold outsiders if its members validated the Gospel message by the quality and congruence of their community life.  For Paul, this meant that Christians needed to establish a revolutionary alternative community in which people would be welcomed, given a place of belonging, treated as human beings and embraced as sisters and brothers

158 (a): Paul VI said that “the faithful… expect much from preaching, and will greatly benefit from it, provided that it is simple, clear, direct, well-adapted”.

Simplicity has to do with the language we use. It must be one that people understand, lest we risk speaking to a void. Preachers often use words learned during their studies and in specialized settings which are not part of the ordinary language of their hearers. These are words that are suitable in theology or catechesis, but whose meaning is incomprehensible to the majority of Christians

To go with theme of "widow" in today's first reading and Gospel:

An old man and woman hate each other, but remain married for years. During their shouting fights, the old man constantly warns his wife, "If I die first, I will dig my way up and out of the grave to come back and haunt you for the rest of your life!"

One day, the man abruptly dies. After the burial, the wife goes straight to the local bar and begins to party. Her friends ask if she isn't worried about her husband digging himself out of the grave.

The wife smiles, "Let the old b***** dig. I had him buried upside down!"

Joshua 6

The Lord said to Joshua: "I am delivering Jericho and its king into your hands.

Get your soldiers to march around Jericho. Do this for 6 days,
marching with the Sacred Chest
with 7 trumpets in front of it.

On the 7th day, march around the city 7 times, and then let the whole people give a mighty war cry."

The soldiers and people did this,
and when the war cry was made,
the walls of Jericho fell down.

The Israelites then entered the town and captured it. They spared the lives of Rahab the prostitute and her family

Dear Lord, long ago you caused the walls of Jericho to fall. Please in our day cause walls of prejudice and corruption to fall

At the end of this day I praise you, Lord, for all your love and help.

O people of the world, how long will you close your hearts to God?
How long you will keep on chasing false goals?

Mark 14.26-42

After the meal, Jesus said to his apostles "Tonight all of you will desert me". Peter said "I will never desert you". Jesus replied "Tonight before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times"

They came to a place with olive trees called Gethsemane. Jesus asked Peter, James and John to pray with him

Jesus was overcome with sadness and fear. He said to them "Sadness is filling my heart, as if my heart is dying. Please support me as I pray"

Then he fell on his face and prayed for about an hour: "Father, don't let this suffering continue. But your will be done"

He stood up and found that the apostles were asleep. He said to them "Couldn't you stay awake one hour to support me?"

Three times he prayed the same way. Three times the apostles went to sleep. Then he said "Get ready.  The one who is betraying me is coming"

Jesus, please help me give more time to prayer

.
Simply using a few examples, let us recall some practical resources which can enrich our preaching and make it more attractive

One of the most important things is to learn how to use images in preaching, how to appeal to imagery. Sometimes examples are used to clarify a certain point, but these examples usually appeal only to the mind; images, on the other hand, help people better to appreciate and accept the message we wish to communicate.

An attractive image makes the message seem familiar, close to home, practical and related to everyday life. A successful image can make people savour the message, awaken a desire and move the will towards the Gospel. A good homily, an old teacher once told me, should have “an idea, a sentiment, an image.”

120. Since everything is interrelated, concern for the protection of nature is also incompatible with the justification of abortion.

How can we genuinely teach the importance of concern for other vulnerable beings, however troublesome or inconvenient they may be, if we fail to protect a human embryo, even when its presence is uncomfortable and creates difficulties?

“If personal and social sensitivity towards the acceptance of the new life is lost, then other forms of acceptance that are valuable for society also wither away”.[97]

156. Some people think they can be good preachers because they know what ought to be said, but they pay no attention to how it should be said, that is, the concrete way of constructing a sermon.

They complain when people do not listen to or appreciate them, but perhaps they have never taken the trouble to find the proper way of presenting their message.

Let us remember that “the obvious importance of the content of evangelization must not overshadow the importance of its ways and means”. Concern for the way we preach is likewise a profoundly spiritual concern. It entails responding to the love of God by putting all our talents and creativity at the service of the mission which he has given us; at the same time, it shows a fine, active love of neighbour by refusing to offer others a product of poor quality

In the Bible, for example, we can find advice on how to prepare a homily so as to best reach people: “Speak concisely, say much in few words” (Sir 32:8).

Yesterday afternoon, after registering an inmate for a university course, I attended two meetings concerning ministry to prisoners

HK inmates are fortunate to be in the care of one of the best correctional services in the world - and to be helped by a large range of non-government bodies which care for their welfare and that of their families.

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
     我主應受讚美

119. Nor must the critique of a misguided anthropocentrism underestimate the importance of interpersonal relations.

If the present ecological crisis is one small sign of the ethical, cultural and spiritual crisis of modernity, we cannot presume to heal our relationship with nature and the environment without healing all fundamental human relationships.

Christian thought sees human beings as possessing a particular dignity above other creatures; it thus inculcates esteem for each person and respect for others.

Our openness to others, each of whom is a “thou” capable of knowing, loving and entering into dialogue, remains the source of our nobility as human persons.

A correct relationship with the created world demands that we not weaken this social dimension of openness to others, much less the transcendent dimension of our openness to the “Thou” of God.

Our relationship with the environment can never be isolated from our relationship with others and with God. Otherwise, it would be nothing more than romantic individualism dressed up in ecological garb, locking us into a stifling immanence.

Joshua 4

After the Israelites crossed the Jordan River, Joshua selected 12 men, one from each tribe, and told them to get 12 stones from the middle of the Jordan.

The 12 stones were set up at Gilgal, east of Jericho, as a reminder of how God had helped the Israelites cross the river.

When children in the future asked "What do these stones mean?" parents were to answer:

"The waters of the Jordan separated and stopped flowing when the Lord's Sacred Chest entered the river. These 12 stones are a permanent reminder of this."

As soon as the Israelites had finished crossing the Jordan,
its waters immediately started flowing again.

Dear Lord, please don't let me ever forget the many times you have helped me cross "Jordan" rivers

Why are the nations revolting against God? Why won't the nations accept God?

Acts 15.1-29

Some Jewish Christians came to Syrian Antioch from Judea and said that non-Jewish Christians should be circumcised. Paul and Barnabas argued against such an idea, and decided to go to Jerusalem to discuss this issue with the apostles there

During a long meeting, Peter reminded everyone how the Holy Spirit had been poured out on non-circumcised people.

James  spoke of how all peoples are meant to be consecrated to the Lord

James then issued a teaching for non-Jewish believers: "All we ask you to do is to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood from the meat of strangled animals, from fornication. Avoid these, and you will do what is right"

Jesus, please don't let me make unreasonable demands on other people

Mark 14.1-11

Two days before the Passover festival, the religious leaders kept looking for a way to arrest Jesus and have him put to death

During these days Jesus had a meal at the home of Simon the leper.

At the meal, a woman put expensive burial oil on Jesus' head. The woman understood  that Jesus was soon to die

One of Jesus' 12 apostles, Judas Iscariot, went to the religious leaders and offered to help them arrest Jesus at a convenient time

The leaders promised to give Judas money. Judas looked for an opportunity to arrange the arrest

Jesus,  forgive me for the times
when I have not been faithful  to you and your teaching

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel             Full text

155.
In this effort we may (need to think of) some ordinary human experience such as a joyful reunion, a moment of disappointment, the fear of being alone, compassion at the sufferings of others, uncertainty about the future, concern for a loved one, and so forth.

But we need to develop a broad and profound sensitivity to what really affects other people’s lives. Let us also keep in mind that we should never respond to questions that nobody asks.

Nor is it fitting to talk about the latest news in order to awaken people’s interest; we have television programmes for that. It is possible, however, to start with some fact or story so that God’s word can forcefully resound in its call to conversion, worship, commitment to fraternity and service, and so forth

Yet there will always be some who readily listen to a preacher’s commentaries on current affairs, while not letting themselves be challenged.

  Wednesday November 4

Yesterday after a long day at an immigration centre and then at two nearby prisons, I found myself spending a couple of night hours assisting with a police case involving a drug-affected asylum seeker ....and I thought to myself: how much longer will the HK government keep its present failed refugee policy which sees asylum seekers sinking deeper into crime, and sees police officers etc having to spend more and more time on such crime

118. This situation has led to a constant schizophrenia, wherein a technocracy which sees no intrinsic value in lesser beings, coexists with the other extreme, which sees no special value in human beings.

But one cannot prescind from humanity. There can be no renewal of our relationship with nature without a renewal of humanity itself. There can be no ecology without an adequate anthropology.

When the human person is considered as simply one being among others, the product of chance or physical determinism, then “our overall sense of responsibility wanes”.[96]

A misguided anthropocentrism need not necessarily yield to “biocentrism”, for that would entail adding yet another imbalance, failing to solve present problems and adding new ones.

Human beings cannot be expected to feel responsibility for the world unless, at the same time, their unique capacities of knowledge, will, freedom and responsibility are recognized and valued.

Joshua 3

Instructed by the Lord, Joshua told the people to go to the bank of the Jordan River.

He told the priests carrying the Sacred Chest to stand in the river on the edge of the water.

As soon as the feet of the priests touched the water, the river stopped flowing.

The people then went across the dry river bed towards Jericho.

Dear God, please help me to cross rivers of difficulty, doubt, conflict etc

Psalm 1

Acts 14.19-27

Some Jewish leaders arrived from Pisidian Antioch and Iconium.
They turned the people of Lycaonia against Paul and Barnabas

The people stoned Paul and, thinking he was dead, dragged him outside the town

The disciples gathered around Paul's body. As they did so, he stood up. The next day he and Barnabas went to the town of Derbe

After Derbe, they went back to Pisidian Antioch via Lystra and Iconium.  In each place they encouraged the believers to persevere in the faith, especially during difficult times in their lives

In each place they also appointed elders to be church leaders

Eventually Paul and Barnabas arrived back in Syrian Antioch, where they gave an account of how God had opened the door of faith to non-Jewish people

Jesus, please help me persevere in the faith, like Paul and Barnabas

Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky and all peoples will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds with power and glory

He will send his angels with a loud trumpet to gather good people from all parts of the earth

Therefore you  should live a good life, and you will have nothing to fear on your last day"

154 (b): The preacher needs to be able to link the message of a biblical text to a human situation, to an experience which cries out for the light of God’s word. This interest has nothing to do with shrewdness or calculation; it is profoundly religious and pastoral. Fundamentally it is a “spiritual sensitivity for reading God’s message in events”, and this is much more than simply finding something interesting to say.

What we are looking for is “what the Lord has to say in this or that particular circumstance”. Preparation for preaching thus becomes an exercise in evangelical discernment, wherein we strive to recognize – in the light of the Spirit – “a call which God causes to resound in the historical situation itself. In this situation, and also through it, God calls the believer”

117. Neglecting to monitor the harm done to nature, and the environmental impact of our decisions, is only the most striking sign of a disregard for the message contained in the structures of nature itself.

When we fail to acknowledge as part of reality the worth of a poor person, a human embryo, a person with disabilities – to offer just a few examples – it becomes difficult to hear the cry of nature itself; everything is connected.

Once the human being declares independence from reality and behaves with absolute dominion, the very foundations of our life begin to crumble, for “instead of carrying out his role as a cooperator with God in the work of creation, man sets himself up in place of God and thus ends up provoking a rebellion on the part of nature”.[95]

Joshua 2 (a)

Joshua sent two men as spies to explore the Jericho area. In Jericho they went to the house of Rahab the prostitute.

The king of Jericho was told about this and he sent men to capture the two Israelites.

But Rahab hid the men and told the king that they had already gone.

Rahab said to the men in their hiding place on her roof:

"I know that the Lord has given you this land. My people are afraid of you. We have heard how the Lord dried up the sea for your crossing out of Egypt. We have heard how you defeated the two kings Sihon and Og.

Since I have shown you kindness,
I now ask you to show kindness to my family, and spare their lives when you attack this city."

Joshua 2 (b)

The men agreed and told Rahab
to tie a scarlet cord to her window
so the Israelites would know her family were inside.

Rahab helped the men go down from the window by a rope.

The men stayed in the nearby hills for three days until it was safe to leave.

The men returned to Joshua and told how the people of Jericho
were already trembling at the thought of an Israelite attack.

Lord, please bless all women and girls caught up in prostitution

Acts 14.8-18

In Lycaonia, there was a man who had never walked in his life, because his feet were crippled from birth

As he listened to Paul preaching, Paul noticed him and saw that he had the faith to be cured

Paul said in a loud voice "Get to your feet! Stand up!" The crippled man jumped up and began to walk

The local people thought that Paul and Barnabas must be gods, so Paul said to them "We are only human beings like you. We have come with Good News to help you turn from empty idols to the living God who made heaven and earth. It is he who sends you rain and who makes your crops grow"

Jesus,  help people turn away from idol worship

Mark 12.41-44

Jesus sat down in the Temple area and noticed people putting money into a donation box to help the poor

Many rich people put in a lot of money.

A poor widow put in two small coins

Jesus said to his disciples  "That poor widow has donated more than all the other people, for they put in money they had left over, but she  put in the only money she had"

Jesus, please make me more generous in helping poor people

154 (a):
The preacher also needs to keep his ear to the people and to discover what it is that the faithful need to hear. A preacher has to contemplate the word, but he also has to contemplate his people.

In this way he learns “of the aspirations, of riches and limitations, of ways of praying, of loving, of looking at life and the world, which distinguish this or that human gathering,” while paying attention “to actual people, to using their language, their signs and symbols, to answering the questions they ask”.
