Imitating Pope Francis

Tuesday February 2    40th day after Christmas:    Candlemas    Feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple

You might remember a story some months ago about a bed-ridden young man suffering from a stroke .... who started to show remarkable signs of recovery when he and his mother began patching up their relationship.
Email from man's sister yesterday with the good news that her brother is now able to walk by himself, albeit slowly.
There's a lot of truth in the Chinese saying "Most sicknesses start in the heart"

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
     我主應受讚美

197. What is needed is a politics which is far-sighted and capable of a new, integral and interdisciplinary approach to handling the different aspects of the crisis.

Often, politics itself is responsible for the disrepute in which it is held, on account of corruption and the failure to enact sound public policies

If in a given region the state does not carry out its responsibilities, some business groups can come forward in the guise of benefactors, wield real power, and consider themselves exempt from certain rules, to the point of tolerating different forms of organized crime, human trafficking, the drug trade and violence, all of which become very difficult to eradicate.

If politics shows itself incapable of breaking such a perverse logic, and remains caught up in inconsequential discussions, we will continue to avoid facing the major problems of humanity. A strategy for real change calls for rethinking processes in their entirety, for it is not enough to include a few superficial ecological considerations while failing to question the logic which underlies present-day culture. A healthy politics needs to be able to take up this challenge.

Luke 2.22-32

When Jesus was 40 days old, his parents took him to the Temple in Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, as the Law required

In Jerusalem there was an old man named Simeon. The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that before he died,  he would see the Christ of the Lord

Prompted by the Spirit, he came to the Temple, took Jesus in his arms and praised God, saying

"Now, Master, you can let your servant go in peace, for my eyes have seen the Savior. He is a light to enlighten the pagans, and he is the glory of your people Israel"

Jesus, true Light of the world, we praise you Lord

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel             Full text

218: Peace in society cannot be understood as pacification or the mere absence of violence resulting from the domination of one part of society over others.

Nor does true peace act as a pretext for justifying a social structure which silences or appeases the poor, so that the more affluent can placidly support their lifestyle while others have to make do as they can.

Demands involving the distribution of wealth, concern for the poor and human rights cannot be suppressed under the guise of creating a consensus on paper or a transient peace for a contented minority.

The dignity of the human person and the common good rank higher than the comfort of those who refuse to renounce their privileges. When these values are threatened, a prophetic voice must be raised

  Monday February 1

The ripple effect of generosity:
After yesterday mornings Mass at YMT I invited a man recently out of detention for breakfast at a local canteen ... and I gave him a couple of cake coupons given me by kind  people at the Mass. Unbeknown to us, a husband and wife who had been at the same Mass were also in the canteen ... and kindly paid our bill as they left. To keep the kindness going I then paid (without her knowing) for a Thai domestic worker whom I'd never met who had come and sat at our table. I'm not sure what the domestic worker did, but I do know the former inmate shared his cakes with other needy people.

Pope's letter on climate change:

196. What happens with politics? Let us keep in mind the principle of subsidiarity, which grants freedom to develop the capabilities present at every level of society, while also demanding a greater sense of responsibility for the common good from those who wield greater power.

Today it is the case that some economic sectors exercise more power than states themselves.

But economics without politics cannot be justified, since this would make it impossible to favour other ways of handling the various aspects of the present crisis.

The mindset which leaves no room for sincere concern for the environment is the same mindset which lacks concern for the inclusion of the most vulnerable members of society.

For “the current model, with its emphasis on success and self-reliance, does not appear to favour an investment in efforts to help the slow, the weak or the less talented to find opportunities in life”.[139]

1 Kings 8-9

When the temple was finished,
Solomon shifted the Sacred Chest to the temple.

After the Chest was placed in the temple, the glorious cloud of the Lord filled the temple.

Solomon then praised God and blessed the people. Solomon prayed that the temple would be a place of blessings.

Solomon also prayed that all the peoples of the world would come to know the Lord from whom all life comes.

The Lord again appeared to Solomon and said: "I will be near to all who enter the temple you have built."

Dear God, may all temples and churches in the world be places where people praise and love you

Psalm  93

The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed, he has girded himself with power.

The world you made firm, not to be moved. From all eternity, O Lord, you are.

The oceans and coastlines of the world are majestic and powerful.

But greater than the roar of mighty waters, more glorious than the surging of the sea is the Lord on high.

Such a Lord, such a Creator, such a God. Truly your decrees are to be trusted.

Holiness is fitting to your house
O Lord, always and everywhere.

We praise you, Lord, our Creator

Power Over the Demons:  In today's Gospel, Jesus drives the demons out of a man and sends them into a herd of swine, who are forced off a cliff.  The man who had been tormented by the demons was not only grateful for his liberating healing, but he wanted to stay with Jesus.  Jesus however, instructs the man to remain living where he is and to give testimony to what Jesus had done for him. The local people were terrified of what Jesus had done and asked him to leave.  Clearly, Jesus had power over the demons and the people were anxious to have him gone, as only God would have the power to do such a thing, or perhaps, they thought, that another evil power could do this work.
Perhaps, the people who witnessed this healing of a demoniac were afraid, but, we, ought to take solace in the understanding that God or Christ has the power over demons, darkness and evil.  No matter how wicked things get in this world, the Lords leads us, his children, in triumphant procession, as Saint Paul says in 2 Corinthians, Chapter two, verses, 14-17.

Sunday January 24 was the coldest day in HK for 59 years. That morning at Mass, not a few men wore caps of various sorts. Quite understandable. At the Oblate parish of St Alfred's in the New Territories, when Communion time came, parish priest Fr Slawek made a gentle announcement to the men: "When you come for Communion, please don't wear your hats" ("m-ho daai mo"). But this caused many people to smile because it sounds like "don't bring your mother"!

Pope's letter on climate change:

195. The principle of the maximization of profits, frequently isolated from other considerations, reflects a misunderstanding of the very concept of the economy.

As long as production is increased, little concern is given to whether it is at the cost of future resources or the health of the environment; as long as the clearing of a forest increases production, no one calculates the losses entailed in the desertification of the land, the harm done to biodiversity or the increased pollution.

In a word, businesses profit by calculating and paying only a fraction of the costs involved.

Yet only when “the economic and social costs of using up shared environmental resources are recognized with transparency and fully borne by those who incur them, not by other peoples or future generations”,[138] can those actions be considered ethical.

An instrumental way of reasoning, which provides a purely static analysis of realities in the service of present needs, is at work whether resources are allocated by the market or by state central planning.

Jeremiah 1

Jeremiah lived in a village not far from Jerusalem. Jeremiah's father was a priest.

God said to Jeremiah: "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. I have appointed you as prophet to the nations."

Jeremiah said to God: "Lord, I do not know how to speak. I am so young."

God then touched Jeremiah's mouth and said: "I now put my words into your mouth. Go and tell the people everything I ask you to speak.

Do not be dismayed by anyone.
I am making you strong.

You must confront Judah's kings, priests and people. They will oppose you, but will not overcome you, for I am with you."

Lord, please give special courage
to people who speak your message for the world

Psalm 71

In you, O Lord, I take refuge.
Please hear me and help me.

Be a rock where I can take refuge.
Rescue me from people who want to hurt me.

It is you, O Lord, who are my hope. In you I have trusted since I was young.

From my mother's womb you have been my help. My hope has always been in you.

Now that I am old, please do not forget me. Now that my strength fails, do not abandon me.

Now that I am old and grey-headed, may I continue to trust in you and proclaim your help.

To you I will sing with the harp.
All day long my tongue will tell of your goodness to me.

Lord, may all elderly people put their trust and hope in you

Love is always patient and kind. It is never jealous, never boastful, never conceited, never rude or selfish

Love does not take offence. It's not resentful. Love delights in the truth

Love is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope and to endure whatever comes

Love is virtue Number One, greater than faith or hope

Yesterday at a detention centre, I visited two inmates whose spouses and families I met in Uganda three weeks ago. Both inmates broke into tears at first, but then cheered up and even laughed by the end of the conversation. I will post them photos and other items I was given for them by their families.

Separation from their families is a cross they, and they families, must bear for long years. Ten to twelve years if they serve the whole of their sentence in HK. Maybe a little bit less if, please God, Uganda and HK sign a prisoner transfer agreement

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
     我主應受讚美

194. For new models of progress to arise, there is a need to change “models of global development”;[136] this will entail a responsible reflection on “the meaning of the economy and its goals with an eye to correcting its malfunctions and misapplications”.[137]

It is not enough to balance, in the medium term, the protection of nature with financial gain, or the preservation of the environment with progress. Halfway measures simply delay the inevitable disaster.

Put simply, it is a matter of redefining our notion of progress. A technological and economic development which does not leave in its wake a better world and an integrally higher quality of life cannot be considered progress.

Frequently, in fact, people’s quality of life actually diminishes – by the deterioration of the environment, the low quality of food or the depletion of resources – in the midst of economic growth.

In this context, talk of sustainable growth usually becomes a way of distracting attention and offering excuses. It absorbs the language and values of ecology into the categories of finance and technocracy, and the social and environmental responsibility of businesses often gets reduced to a series of marketing and image-enhancing measures.

Here I would make my own the touching and prophetic lament voiced some years ago by the bishops of the Philippines : “An incredible variety of insects lived in the forest and were busy with all kinds of tasks… Birds flew through the air, their bright plumes and varying calls adding color and song to the green of the forests… God intended this land for us, his special creatures, but not so that we might destroy it and turn it into a wasteland… After a single night’s rain, look at the chocolate brown rivers in your locality and remember that they are carrying the life blood of the land into the sea… How can fish swim in sewers like the Pasig and so many more rivers which we have polluted? Who has turned the wonderworld of the seas into underwater cemeteries bereft of color and life?”

193. In any event, if in some cases sustainable development were to involve new forms of growth, then in other cases, given the insatiable and irresponsible growth produced over many decades, we need also to think of containing growth by setting some reasonable limits and even retracing our steps before it is too late.

We know how unsustainable is the behaviour of those who constantly consume and destroy, while others are not yet able to live in a way worthy of their human dignity.

That is why the time has come to accept decreased growth in some parts of the world, in order to provide resources for other places to experience healthy growth. Benedict XVI has said that “technologically advanced societies must be prepared to encourage more sober lifestyles, while reducing their energy consumption and improving its efficiency”.[135]

Solomon enjoyed peace with all his neighbouring countries. He was blessed by God with great wisdom and understanding.

He composed 3,000 proverbs and 1,000 songs. People from all nations went to hear Solomon's wisdom.

Luke 12.15-21

Jesus told the people this story: There was a rich man who, having had a good harvest from his land, thought to himself "What am I to do? I don't have enough room to store my crops".

Then he said to himself "This is what I will do: I will pull down my barns and build bigger ones, and store all my grain in them, and I will say to my soul: My soul, you have plenty of good things laid by for many years to come; take things easy, eat, drink, and have a good time"

But God said to him "Fool! This very night your earthly life will come to an end. And all your possessions, who will get them?"

So it is when people store up treasure for themselves, instead of making themselves rich in the sight of God

215 (a): There are other weak and defenceless beings who are frequently at the mercy of economic interests or indiscriminate exploitation.

I am speaking of creation as a whole. We human beings are not only the beneficiaries but also the stewards of other creatures.

Thanks to our bodies, God has joined us so closely to the world around us that we can feel the desertification of the soil almost as a physical ailment, and the extinction of a species as a painful disfigurement.

In Kenya and Uganda one daily frustration is a troublesome phone connection. When last week at the office of the Chief Justice's assistant, I had to smile when even he had phone troubles .... at one stage getting up from his desk and going to a window to try to improve reception

Thursday January 28             More thoughts from Pope on abortion  - 214, below

No matter how busy I am, no matter how tired I am, no matter if I'm in Africa or HK, preparing this little website forces me to give special time each night to the Bible (for the 4 readings, below) and to  the teaching of Pope Francis (Laudato Si and The Joy of the Gospel)

While in Africa I reflected on this, and realised I needed the energy that comes from the Bible and from Francis' words.

I hope many readers have the same experience .... by committing ourselves each day to the Bible readings and to the Pope's teaching, we get energy for our daily lives in this challenging world

192. For example, a path of productive development, which is more creative and better directed, could correct the present disparity between excessive technological investment in consumption and insufficient investment in resolving urgent problems facing the human family.

It could generate intelligent and profitable ways of reusing, revamping and recycling, and it could also improve the energy efficiency of cities.

Productive diversification offers the fullest possibilities to human ingenuity to create and innovate, while at the same time protecting the environment and creating more sources of employment.

Such creativity would be a worthy expression of our most noble human qualities, for we would be striving intelligently, boldly and responsibly to promote a sustainable and equitable development within the context of a broader concept of quality of life.

On the other hand, to find ever new ways of despoiling nature, purely for the sake of new consumer items and quick profit, would be, in human terms, less worthy and creative, and more superficial.

1 Kings 3

The Lord appeared to King Solomon in a dream and said "Ask me for anything you'd like."

Solomon asked for wisdom: "Give your servant a heart to understand how to discern between good and evil."

God replied: "I now give you a heart full of wisdom, wisdom greater than anyone else has ever had.

And I also give you what you did not ask for: riches and glory and long life."

Not long after this, two prostitutes came for judgement: they lived in the same house and both had given birth to a son, but one of the babies died during the night.

The mother of the dead baby changed babies during the same night and claimed that the living baby was hers.

Solomon asked for a sword to cut the living baby in two and give half to each mother.

The lying woman agreed, but the real mother said "No. Don't kill the baby. Give it to the other woman."

Solomon then knew the real mother was telling the truth and gave the baby to her.

For wisdom such as this, Solomon's reputation spread far.

Dear Lord, please give me more wisdom for my life

My recording of this reading

Psalm 90

O Lord you have been our refuge
from one generation to the next.

Before the earth or the world existed, you are God, without beginning or end.

For you, a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone so quickly.

We humans have a short life, our life is over like a sigh.

Our span is 70 years, or 80 for those who are strong.

Make us know the shortness of our life, that we may gain wisdom of heart.

In the morning, fill us with your love. Give success to the work of our hands.

Lord, help us realize the shortness of our life,
that we may live our lives more wisely

Romans 12.14-21

Pray for people who are unkind to you. Be kind to them.

Rejoice with those who are happy.

Console people who are sad

Treat everyone with kindness.

Never be condescending. Make real friends with the poor

Do all you can to live at peace with everyone.

Resist evil and conquer it with good

Luke 11.37-54

Jesus said to the religious leaders "You worry so much about cleaning dirty dishes,  but don't care about having a dirty heart full of extortion and wickedness

At meetings and in the market, you like being treated as people of importance. But in fact you are like unmarked tombs that people walk on without knowing it

You expect ordinary people to observe unreasonable laws, while you excuse yourselves from  such laws

You don't care about obtaining real wisdom, and you prevent others from obtaining wisdom"

The leaders were stung by Jesus' words, and they intensified their efforts to trap him in his speech

Jesus, help religious leaders be sincere people

214. Precisely because this involves the internal consistency of our message about the value of the human person, the Church cannot be expected to change her position on this question (( of abortion ...c.f. 213)).

I want to be completely honest in this regard. This is not something subject to alleged reforms or “modernizations”. It is not “progressive” to try to resolve problems by eliminating a human life.

On the other hand, it is also true that we have done little to adequately accompany women in very difficult situations, where abortion appears as a quick solution to their profound anguish, especially when the life developing within them is the result of rape or a situation of extreme poverty. Who can remain unmoved before such painful situations?

Wednesday January 27                         Pope Francis and abortion - 213, below

I spent yesterday starting to process more than a hundred messages, photos and other items from families in Kenya and Uganda for inmates in HK prisons. Each tiny item needs to have the inmate's prison number, not to mention a correctly addressed envelope. Also my own photos - around 200 - which I've printed and need to post to the inmates with items from their families. But I can't complain about being "stuck in the office" - it's not a bad place to be in this freezing weather!

191. Whenever these questions are raised, some react by accusing others of irrationally attempting to stand in the way of progress and human development.

But we need to grow in the conviction that a decrease in the pace of production and consumption can at times give rise to another form of progress and development.

Efforts to promote a sustainable use of natural resources are not a waste of money, but rather an investment capable of providing other economic benefits in the medium term.

If we look at the larger picture, we can see that more diversified and innovative forms of production which impact less on the environment can prove very profitable.

It is a matter of openness to different possibilities which do not involve stifling human creativity and its ideals of progress, but rather directing that energy along new channels.

1 Kings 2

Before King David died, he encouraged his son Solomon
to love the Lord with all his heart and soul.

Solomon executed his main enemies and rivals, including Adonijah who had again plotted to become king.

Solomon then was secure and safe as king.

Dear God, thank you for the life of David who, despite his faults, loved you with all his heart

Psalm 89

I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord. Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever.

Jesus replied "Even more blessed are those who hear the word of God and put it into practice!"

Jesus also said "On Judgement day, the Queen of the South will rise up with the people of this generation and condemn them, because she came from a distant country to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here"

Jesus, greater than Solomon, please help me put your teaching into practice

213. Among the vulnerable for whom the Church wishes to care with particular love and concern are unborn children, the most defenceless and innocent among us.

Nowadays efforts are made to deny them their human dignity and to do with them whatever one pleases, taking their lives and passing laws preventing anyone from standing in the way of this.

Frequently, as a way of ridiculing the Church’s effort to defend their lives, attempts are made to present her position as ideological, obscurantist and conservative.

Yet this defence of unborn life is closely linked to the defence of each and every other human right. It involves the conviction that a human being is always sacred and inviolable, in any situation and at every stage of development.

Human beings are ends in themselves and never a means of resolving other problems. Once this conviction disappears, so do solid and lasting foundations for the defence of human rights, which would always be subject to the passing whims of the powers that be.

Reason alone is sufficient to recognize the inviolable value of each single human life, but if we also look at the issue from the standpoint of faith, “every violation of the personal dignity of the human being cries out in vengeance to God and is an offence against the creator of the individual”.

190. Here too, it should always be kept in mind that “environmental protection cannot be assured solely on the basis of financial calculations of costs and benefits. The environment is one of those goods that cannot be adequately safeguarded or promoted by market forces”.[134]

Once more, we need to reject a magical conception of the market, which would suggest that problems can be solved simply by an increase in the profits of companies or individuals. Is it realistic to hope that those who are obsessed with maximizing profits will stop to reflect on the environmental damage which they will leave behind for future generations?

Where profits alone count, there can be no thinking about the rhythms of nature, its phases of decay and regeneration, or the complexity of ecosystems which may be gravely upset by human intervention. Moreover, biodiversity is considered at most a deposit of economic resources available for exploitation, with no serious thought for the real value of things, their significance for persons and cultures, or the concerns and needs of the poor.

Feast of St Timothy and St Titus

2 Timothy 1.1-5

From Paul, appointed by God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, to Timothy, dear child of mine in the faith, wishing you grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Lord

I always remember your sincere faith. It came first to live in your grandmother Lois, then in your mother Eunice, and now in yourself

Jesus, thank you for parents who pass on the faith to their children

Psalm  117

O Praise the Lord, all you nations. Acclaim him, all you peoples!

Titus 1.1-9

From Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to Titus, true child of mine in the faith we share, wishing you grace and peace from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Saviour

The reason I left you behind in Crete was for you to appoint elders in every town: each of them a man of irreproachable character, married only once, not arrogant or hot-tempered, not a heavy drinker, not out to make money

A man who is hospitable and a friend of all that is good; sensible, devout, with a firm grasp of the Good News, a good teacher, able to refute people who argue against sound doctrine

Jesus, please help all pastors be good "elders"

Recording

 Luke 10.1-9

Jesus appointed 72 disciples to go ahead of him in pairs, to all the towns and places he himself was to visit

He said to them "The harvest is rich, but the laborers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send laborers to his harvest

When you go into a town, cure those in it who are sick, and say:  'The kingdom of God is very near to you' "

Jesus, please inspire more people to make the spreading of the Good News their life's work
