Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
     我主應受讚美

231. Love, overflowing with small gestures of mutual care, is also civic and political, and it makes itself felt in every action that seeks to build a better world.

Love for society and commitment to the common good are outstanding expressions of a charity which affects not only relationships between individuals but also “macro-relationships, social, economic and political ones”.[156] That is why the Church set before the world the ideal of a “civilization of love”.[157]

Social love is the key to authentic development: “In order to make society more human, more worthy of the human person, love in social life – political, economic and cultural – must be given renewed value, becoming the constant and highest norm for all activity”.[158]

In this framework, along with the importance of little everyday gestures, social love moves us to devise larger strategies to halt environmental degradation and to encourage a “culture of care” which permeates all of society. When we feel that God is calling us to intervene with others in these social dynamics, we should realize that this too is part of our spirituality, which is an exercise of charity and, as such, matures and sanctifies us.

Nehemiah 7-13

The wall of Jerusalem was finally rebuilt and doors were set in place in the wall.

In the seventh month of the lunar calendar Nehemiah assembled all the people and read to them the Book of the Law of Moses.

This was the first time that most of the people had heard the words of Moses' Book.

The people were grateful to God
and praised him with great happiness.

The people also promised God
that they would serve him more faithfully in the future.

But while Nehemiah was away on a visit  to the king the people and leaders became careless about the Law.

When  Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem he brought the people back to proper observance of the Law

Dear God, may we find joy and strength in reading the Bible, and may the world have more good leaders like Nehemiah

Psalm 124

"If the Lord had not been on our side", this is Israel's song.

If the Lord had not been on our side when people rose against us, then would they have swallowed us alive when they were angry with us.

Blessed be the Lord who did not let us become a prey for their teeth.

Our life, like a bird, has escaped
from the snare of the hunter.

Indeed the snare has been broken
and we have escaped.

Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth.

Thank you, Lord, for all the times you have rescued me from trouble

2 Corinthians 11.24 - 12.14

Remember how much I have suffered for the sake of the Good News:

- 5 times I had the 39 lashes from the Jews
- 3 times I was beaten with sticks
- once I was stoned
- 3 times I was shipwrecked
- I have often been starving

This should prove to you that I am a genuine apostle, not after money or fame or power. It is you I want, not your possessions

Jesus, help church workers want souls, not money/fame/power

 Luke 23.13-25

Pilate said to the religious leaders and to the people "You brought this man before me as a political agitator. Neither Herod nor I have found a case against the man. He has done nothing deserving death. I shall have him flogged and then let him go"

But the leaders and people screamed out "Away with him. Crucify him!".

Pilate asked "Why? What harm has he done?"

They kept shouting "Crucify him! Crucify him!"

Pilate then gave in to them and handed Jesus over for crucifixion

Jesus, how great your mental suffering must have been as the crowd shouted for your death

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel             Full text

249.  God continues to work among the people of the Old Covenant and to bring forth treasures of wisdom which flow from their encounter with his word.

For this reason, the Church also is enriched when she receives the values of Judaism

While it is true that certain Christian beliefs are unacceptable to Judaism, and that the Church cannot refrain from proclaiming Jesus as Lord and Messiah, there exists as well a rich complementarity which allows us to read the texts of the Hebrew Scriptures together and to help one another to mine the riches of God’s word.

We can also share many ethical convictions and a common concern for justice and the development of peoples.

230. Saint Therese of Lisieux invites us to practise the little way of love, not to miss out on a kind word, a smile or any small gesture which sows peace and friendship.

An integral ecology is also made up of simple daily gestures which break with the logic of violence, exploitation and selfishness.

In the end, a world of exacerbated consumption is at the same time a world which mistreats life in all its forms.

Psalm 123

To you have I lifted up my eyes,
you who dwell in the heavens.

My eyes, like the eyes of slaves
on the hand of their lords.

Like the eyes of a servant on the hand of her mistress, so our eyes are on the Lord our God till he show us mercy.

Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy. We are filled with contempt.

2 Corinthians 8.9 - 9.7

Remember how generous the Lord Jesus was. He was rich, but he became poor for our sake, to make us rich

So we also should help people who are poor. If we have extra
we should help people who don't have enough

Maybe some day, the same poor people will be rich, and we will be poor, and they will help us

And don't forget, God loves a cheerful giver

Jesus, help me do more to help poor people

Luke 22.66 - 23.12

At daybreak there was a meeting of the religious leaders. Jesus was brought before them

They asked him "Are you the Son of God?". He replied "Yes". They said "We have heard his blasphemy from his own lips"

They took him to the Roman governor, Pilate, and made many false accusations against him

Pilate said "I find no case against him". Jesus was then taken to King Herod who made fun of him and sent him back to Pilate

Jesus, on trial before the leaders, before Herod and before Pilate, please help all prisoners who are on trial today

The National Catholic Reporter tells readers that 2 essays  appear in the semi-official newspaper of the Vatican,  known as L'Osservatore Romano, and these essays suggest women ought to be preaching at mass. The essays are written by two religious sisters of the Dominican  Order, an order whose charism is preaching.

The fact that these essays were printed in a "semi-official" newspaper of the Vatican, has some reviewers thinking that perhaps, Pope Francis, is testing the ecclesial waters with what would be a very liberal idea to Catholic Conservatives and Traditionalists.  Although, it is thought by many an educated Catholic and Catholic Theologian that women did preach from the pulpit in the first thousand years of the Church. If you are so inclined, you can find an article by Maureen Fiedler in the National Catholic Reporter who gives her reaction to the printing of these essays in L'Osservatore Romano.

The idea that women ought to be preaching at mass is clearly around and as I have said, it is certainly, one of the promising ways, that the RC Church can do justice for women, but, also, support the longevity and relevancy of the RC Church. Perhaps, the RC Church as an old wineskin might be recreated as a new wineskin with women preaching.  I have said on numerous occasions, that this is THE direction the RC Church must take and I am convinced that this is what the Lord is asking the Church to do.

229. We must regain the conviction that we need one another, that we have a shared responsibility for others and the world, and that being good and decent are worth it.

We have had enough of immorality and the mockery of ethics, goodness, faith and honesty.

It is time to acknowledge that light-hearted superficiality has done us no good.

When the foundations of social life are corroded, what ensues are battles over conflicting interests, new forms of violence and brutality, and obstacles to the growth of a genuine culture of care for the environment.

heard that the Lord had dried up the Jordan's waters to let the Israelites cross over. The kings became very afraid of the Israelites.

At Gilgal near the Jordan the Lord instructed Joshua that all un-circumcised men should be circumcised.

Today's gospel:

Luke 15.11-24

Jesus told this story: a man had two sons. The younger said
to his father "Father, give me the share of the estate that would
come to me"

So the father divided his property between them. A few days later, the younger son left for a distant land where he wasted his money in wild living

When he had used all his money, that country had a severe famine, and he began to feel the pinch, so he got a job on a farm  feeding  pigs. He would willingly have eaten the pigs' food, but no one offered him anything

Then he came to his senses and said "How many of my father's paid servants have more food than they want, and I am dying of hunger. I will leave this place and go to my father and say: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son. Treat me as one of your paid servants." So he left the place and went back to his father

While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with pity. He ran to the boy, clasped him in his arms and kissed him tenderly. Then the son said "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son"

But the father said to his servants "Quick! Bring out the best robe
and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.
Bring the calf we have been fattening, and kill it. We are going to have a feast, a celebration, because this son of mine was dead and has come back to life. He was lost and is found."

Jesus, please help me understand how much you love me, no matter what  mistakes I make

247Relations with Judaism

We hold the Jewish people in special regard because their covenant with God has never been revoked, for “the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable”.

The Church, which shares with Jews an important part of the sacred Scriptures, looks upon the people of the covenant and their faith as one of the sacred roots of her own Christian identity

As Christians, we cannot consider Judaism as a foreign religion; nor do we include the Jews among those called to turn from idols and to serve the true God. With them, we believe in the one God who acts in history, and with them we accept his revealed word.

228. Care for nature is part of a lifestyle which includes the capacity for living together and communion.

Jesus reminded us that we have God as our common Father and that this makes us brothers and sisters.

Fraternal love can only be gratuitous; it can never be a means of repaying others for what they have done or will do for us. That is why it is possible to love our enemies.

This same gratuitousness inspires us to love and accept the wind, the sun and the clouds, even though we cannot control them. In this sense, we can speak of a “universal fraternity”.

246. Signs of division between Christians in countries ravaged by violence add further causes of conflict on the part of those who should instead be a leaven of peace

How many important things unite us! If we really believe in the abundantly free working of the Holy Spirit, we can learn so much from one another

It is not just about being better informed about others, but rather about reaping what the Spirit has sown in them, which is also meant to be a gift for us.

To give but one example, in the dialogue with our Orthodox brothers and sisters, we Catholics have the opportunity to learn more about the meaning of episcopal collegiality and their experience of synodality. Through an exchange of gifts, the Spirit can lead us ever more fully into truth and goodness.

227. One expression of this attitude is when we stop and give thanks to God before and after meals

I ask all believers to return to this beautiful and meaningful custom.

That moment of blessing, however brief, reminds us of our dependence on God for life; it strengthens our feeling of gratitude for the gifts of creation; it acknowledges those who by their labours provide us with these goods; and it reaffirms our solidarity with those in greatest need.

Yesterday at midday I went to a Yau Ma Tei nursing home where Christine (for whom I've been asking prayers) is now living (with excellent care from a dedicated staff). Nehemiah 1-4

Nehemiah was cupbearer for the king of Persia. He heard how the Jews who had returned to Jerusalem were facing many difficulties.

Nehemiah received permission from the king to go to Jerusalem and help rebuild the city.

Nehemiah then supervised the re-building of Jerusalem's wall,
even though some foreigners in Jerusalem made fun of him.

When the workers were ridiculed by foreigners, Nehemiah said to the workers: "Do not be afraid of them. Just keep your mind on the Lord."

I lift up my eyes to the mountains.
From where shall come my help?

My help shall come from the Lord

The men who arrested Jesus took him to the home of the main religious leader. Peter followed at a distance

As Peter sat by a fire in the courtyard, a servant-girl said "This man was with Jesus".  Peter replied "Woman I do not know him"

A little while later, another person said "You are one of them". Peter replied "I am not"

About an hour later, a man said "He was certainly with them. He is from Galilee". Peter replied "I do not know what you are talking about"

While he was still speaking, a rooster crowed, and the Lord looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered what the Lord had said, "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times"

Peter went outside and cried bitterly

Jesus, don't let me ever deny that I know you

Today is the first anniversary of Australian blogger Dr Brian Lewis. Brian was one of Australia’s most eminent moral theologians. Like Pope Francis, Brian always applied Gospel  teaching to particular situations with the compassion that Jesus showed  to those in difficulty.
This explains why Brian's scholarly articles are still frequently accessed

Thursday March 3                  How good and true is no. 226 below! How rarely are we "fully present" to others!

Yesterday in Central on my way to get the ferry to Hei Ling Chau drug treatment centre, I bought some bread for a woman, aged about 50, not a drug addict, who sleeps at McDonald's or in a park .... and I again felt the hope that Hong Kong might have a place where such homeless people could be housed.
Jesus, please bless this hope!

Laudato Si
     我主應受讚美

226.
We are speaking of an attitude of the heart, one which approaches life with serene attentiveness, which is capable of being fully present to someone without thinking of what comes next, which accepts each moment as a gift from God to be lived to the full.

Jesus taught us this attitude when he invited us to contemplate the lilies of the field and the birds of the air, or when seeing the rich young man and knowing his restlessness, “he looked at him with love” (Mk 10:21).

He was completely present to everyone and to everything, and in this way he showed us the way to overcome that unhealthy anxiety which makes us superficial, aggressive and compulsive consumers.

Ezra 8-10

Before the Jews  left Babylon,
Ezra had organized them to pray and fast for a safe journey.

When the Jews reached Jerusalem, Ezra dissolved any marriages that had been arranged with foreign women  while the Jews were in Babylon.

Dear God, please help us to remember to pray for safety each time we set out on a journey
My recording of this reading

Psalm 119

They are happy who follow God's word, those who seek God with all their hearts.

How can young people avoid evil? By seeking you and obeying you, Lord.

Open my eyes, Lord, that I may understand the beauty of your word.

Lord, when I'm worried or in trouble, your word revives me and gives me strength.

Lord, keep my eyes from what is false. Bend my heart to your word and not to love of gain.

The word from your mouth means more to me than silver and gold.

The unfolding of your word gives light and teaches simple people.

Lord, thank you for your word which gives peace to our hearts

2 Corinthians 1.1-10

From Paul, appointed by God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and from Timothy, one of the brothers, to the church of God at Corinth

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, a gentle Father and the God of all consolation. He comforts us in all our sorrows so that we can comfort others in their sorrows

The recent persecutions I experienced made me think I would not survive. This has taught me to rely not on myself but only on God for help

God saved me from being killed. My hope is he will continue to save me

Jesus, please help people who are in danger of being killed today

Luke 22.47-53

While Jesus was  speaking, a group of men arrived, led by Judas.

One of Jesus' apostles used his sword to cut off the right ear of one of the men sent to arrest Jesus

Jesus told his apostles not to use their swords. Then touching the man's ear, he healed him

Jesus said to the men arresting him "This is your hour. This is the reign of darkness"

Jesus, you gave up your freedom for our salvation.

244.  Commitment to ecumenism responds to the prayer of the Lord Jesus that “they may all be one”. The credibility of the Christian message would be much greater if Christians could overcome their divisions and the Church could realize “the fullness of catholicity proper to her in those of her children who, though joined to her by baptism, are yet separated from full communion with her”.

We must never forget that we are pilgrims journeying alongside one another. This means that we must have sincere trust in our fellow pilgrims, putting aside all suspicion or mistrust, and turn our gaze to what we are all seeking: the radiant peace of God’s face.

Trusting others is an art, and peace is an art. Jesus told us: “Blessed are the peacemakers”. In taking up this task, also among ourselves, we fulfil the ancient prophecy: “They shall beat their swords into ploughshares”.

2006-03-03 Ricci Centre for school-less children:  Noel, CAS cakes, walk, volunteer teachers

The Pope just finished a tour of the East Coast and was taking a limousine to the airport. Since he'd never driven a limo, he asked the chauffeur if he could drive for a while. The reluctant chauffeur pulled over along the roadside, climbed into the back of the limo, and the Pope took the wheel. The Pope then merged onto the highway and accelerated to over 90 mph to see what the limo could do.

Suddenly, the Pope noticed the blue light of the State Patrol in his side mirror, so he pulled over. The trooper approached the limo, peered in through the windows, then said, "Just a moment please, I need to call in."

The trooper called in and explained to the chief that he had a very important person pulled over for speeding. "How do I handle this, chief?" asked the trooper. "Is it the Governor?" questioned the chief. "No! This guy is even more important!"

"Is it the President?" asked the chief.    "No! Even more important!"
"Well, who the heck is it?" screamed the chief.  "I don't know, sir," replied the trooper, "but he's got the Pope as his chauffeur."

  Wednesday March 2

Yesterday after spending several hours at Tuen Mun Immigration Centre - visiting mainly asylum seekers - I went to North District Hospital where Christine (for whom I've been asking prayers) was in the observation ward, shortly after being released from detention.

Hospital was asking HK$4,000 per day for Christine to be admitted to a ward, so, after consultation with the Filipino Consulate, I helped Christine gain admission to a nursing home in Yau Ma Tei (for HK7,500 per month, all-inclusive). Already one kind reader has offered to visit her

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si

225. On the other hand, no one can cultivate a simple and satisfying life without being at peace with him or herself. An adequate understanding of spirituality consists in filling out what we mean by peace, which is much more than the absence of war.

Inner peace is closely related to care for ecology and for the common good because, lived out authentically, it is reflected in a balanced lifestyle together with a capacity for wonder which takes us to a deeper understanding of life.

Nature is filled with words of love, but how can we listen to them amid constant noise, interminable and nerve-wracking distractions, or the cult of appearances?

Many people today sense a profound imbalance which drives them to frenetic activity and makes them feel busy, in a constant hurry which in turn leads them to ride rough-shod over everything around them. This too affects how they treat the environment.

An integral ecology includes taking time to recover a serene harmony with creation, reflecting on our lifestyle and our ideals, and contemplating the Creator who lives among us and surrounds us, whose presence “must not be contrived but found, uncovered”.[155]

That remarkable core of late 20th Century folk singing, built on so many simple songs and singers of earlier years, is no longer dominant in a commercially driven music world. Sad though it is, but their sounds echo now in a different world.

Ezra 7

Ezra was a scholar who loved to study the Law of the Lord. He was a descendant of Aaron.

The Lord moved the heart of the king of Persia to grant any request that Ezra made to help the Jews.

Ezra prayed: "Blessed be the Lord our God, for moving the king's heart to look favorably on the rebuilding of our temple."

Dear God, please move the hearts of all government leaders
to look favorably on citizens who want to do good things

Psalm 118

Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love has no end. Let the sons of Israel say: "His love has no end." Let those who honor the Lord say: "His love has no end."

It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.

I was falling, falling, falling,
but the Lord was my helper. The Lord is my strength and my song.
He is my saviour.

The Lord's right hand has triumphed. His right hand has raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live and recount all his deeds.

The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes.

This day was made by the Lord.
We rejoice and are glad.

Lord, we give thanks to you, for you are good.  Your love has no end

Luke 22.39-46

After the Passover meal, Jesus and his disciples went to the Mount of Olives. Jesus said to them "Pray for protection in time of trial"

Then he went apart by himself, about 40 meters away,  knelt down and prayed "Father, save me from this time of trial. But let your will, not mine, be done"

An angel from heaven appeared to him to give him strength. His agony was so great that his sweat became drops of blood falling to the ground

When he got up and went to the disciples, he found them sleeping - so overcome were they with sorrow

Jesus, please help me to pray "not my will, but yours be done"

243. The Church has no wish to hold back the marvellous progress of science.
On the contrary, she rejoices and even delights in acknowledging the enormous potential that God has given to the human mind.

Whenever the sciences – rigorously focused on their specific field of inquiry – arrive at a conclusion which reason cannot refute, faith does not contradict it.

Neither can believers claim that a scientific opinion which is attractive but not sufficiently verified has the same weight as a dogma of faith.

At times some scientists have exceeded the limits of their scientific competence by making certain statements or claims. But here the problem is not with reason itself, but with the promotion of a particular ideology which blocks the path to authentic, serene and productive dialogue.
