8. Patriarch Bartholomew has spoken in particular of the need for each of us to repent of the ways we have harmed the planet, for “inasmuch as we all generate small ecological damage”, we are called to acknowledge “our contribution, smaller or greater, to the disfigurement and destruction of creation”.[14]

He has repeatedly stated this firmly and persuasively, challenging us to acknowledge our sins against creation: “For human beings… to destroy the biological diversity of God’s creation; for human beings to degrade the integrity of the earth by causing changes in its climate, by stripping the earth of its natural forests or destroying its wetlands; for human beings to contaminate the earth’s waters, its land, its air, and its life – these are sins”.[15] 

For “to commit a crime against the natural world is a sin against ourselves and a sin against God”.[16]

271. Clearly Jesus does not want us to be an upper class who look down upon others, but men and women of the people

This is not an idea of the Pope, or one pastoral option among others; it is an  injunction contained in the word of God which is so clear, direct and convincing that it needs no interpretations which might diminish its power to challenge us.

 Let us live it sine glossa, without commentaries. By so doing we will know the missionary joy of sharing life with God’s faithful people as we strive to light a fire in the heart of the world.

Photo of the worms!

Last Saturday morning I joined a group of very special people at McDonald's Next in Admiralty on HK Island, to discuss the formation of a new group to help poor people. Since the group hopes to support other groups and help people make contact with other groups, one man suggested the group is sort of working underground .... supporting those above the ground....so...a good name would be "Earth Worms". Just as he said this, the McDonald's computer projected a new image to its screen in this newest McDs in HK:  a cartoon with dozens of .... worms!  God's way of saying the formation of this group is a good idea!

33 year old Kenyan woman arrested Macau March 30 for drug trafficking. Can't find a report in English - only this Chinese report so far. Photo of the 92 (!) swallowed cocaine pellets in this 2nd Chinese report. Both reports say the women swallowed the drugs in the Philippines.

Today, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Annunciation of the Lord.  Normally, that it is March 25th, but, with Good Friday being on that day this year, the Feast above is moved to April 4th.

The Gospel reading is the story of the Angel Gabriel appearing to Mary and telling her that she has found favour with God, and that she is destined to be the mother of Jesus.  While Mary finds this news absolutely incredulous, she responds with the words:  "I am the handmaid of the Lord; Let it be done to me according to his word."

It is imperative to understand that while these words came from Mary, we, as the Church of Christ, are also the handmaid of the Lord, and we are bound to let the Lord do to us, what he wills, according to his Word.

7. These statements of the Popes echo the reflections of numerous scientists, philosophers, theologians and civic groups, all of which have enriched the Church’s thinking on these questions. 

Outside the Catholic Church, other Churches and Christian communities – and other religions as well – have expressed deep concern and offered valuable reflections on issues which all of us find disturbing.

To give just one striking example, I would mention the statements made by the beloved Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, with whom we share the hope of full ecclesial communion.

271 (a): It is true that in our dealings with the world, we are told to give reasons for our hope, but not as an enemy who critiques and condemns.

 We are told quite clearly: “do so with gentleness and reverence” (1 Pet 3:15 ) and “if possible, so far as it depends upon you, live peaceably with all” (Rom 12:18 ). 

We are also told to overcome “evil with good” (Rom 12:21 ) and to “work for the good of all” (Gal 6:10 ).

 Far from trying to appear better than others, we should “in humility count others better” than ourselves (Phil 2:3). The Lord’s apostles themselves enjoyed “favour with all the people” (Acts 2:47 ; 4:21 , 33; 5:13 ).

Ching Ming Festival in HK today. Reminds me of my first month in HK ....having learnt a little bit of Cantonese I was able to say to people on bus/train "Happy Lunar New Year". But then a month of so later at Ching Ming ...not knowing what Ching Ming was ...on bus/train I said in Cantonese to people "Happy Ching Ming".  Bit like saying "Happy Funeral Day"!

Sometimes we are tempted to be that kind of Christian who keeps the Lord’s wounds at arm’s length

Yet Jesus wants us to touch human misery, to touch the suffering flesh of others

He hopes that we will stop looking for those personal or communal niches which shelter us from the maelstrom of human misfortune and instead enter into the reality of other people’s lives and know the power of tenderness.

 Whenever we do so, our lives become wonderfully (interconnected) and we experience intensely what it is to be a people, to be part of a people

Spring brings its message of Hope

Not only does it proclaim the Truth that Nature arises from her time of decay and darkness to a new life. But it surely speaks to the individual, to nations, to My world, that the time of decay and darkness for them too can pass, and that from conflict and storm, disaster and sin they can spring to a new and gladdening Resurrection-Life.

6. My predecessor Benedict XVI likewise proposed “eliminating the structural causes of the dysfunctions of the world economy and correcting models of growth which have proved incapable of ensuring respect for the environment”.[10] He observed that the world cannot be analyzed by isolating only one of its aspects, since “the book of nature is one and indivisible”, and includes the environment, life, sexuality, the family, social relations, and so forth. It follows that “the deterioration of nature is closely connected to the culture which shapes human coexistence”.[11]

Pope Benedict asked us to recognize that the natural environment has been gravely damaged by our irresponsible behaviour. The social environment has also suffered damage. Both are ultimately due to the same evil: the notion that there are no indisputable truths to guide our lives, and hence human freedom is limitless.

Mark 16.9-20

After he rose from the dead, Jesus appeared first to Mary of Magdala, from whom he had cast out 7 devils. Next  he appeared to two of his disciples while they were on a journey

Then he appeared to the 11 apostles. He said to them "Go everywhere in the world. Proclaim the Good News to all creation. Anyone who believes and is baptized, will be saved.
Anyone who refuses to believe, will be condemned

These are the signs that will be associated with believers:
- in my name they will cast out devils
- they will have the gift of tongues
- they will pick up snakes in their hands
- they will be unharmed if they drink poison
- they will lay their hands on the sick, who will be healed"

And so, the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up to heaven, while they, going out, preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming their message by the miracles that accompanied the message

Lord Jesus, may more and more people all over the world believe in you

Two pieces of good news
- Thank you Lord!

1. Two days ago (Thursday) in Kampala, prison chaplain Sr Margaret had a meeting with Uganda families I met in January ... a lovely support network now blooming.

2. Christine (ex-inmate, fighting cancer) yesterday had noodles at a Maxim's restaurant near the Yau Ma Tei aged home where she is living. Her appetite came back two days ago ....with no more vomiting after eating .....and ....the hair on her head is starting to grow again!      (Background photos)

5. Saint John Paul II became increasingly concerned about this issue. In his first Encyclical he warned that human beings frequently seem “to see no other meaning in their natural environment than what serves for immediate use and consumption”.[4] Subsequently, he would call for a global ecological conversion.[5]

At the same time, he noted that little effort had been made to “safeguard the moral conditions for an authentic human ecology”.[6] The destruction of the human environment is extremely serious, not only because God has entrusted the world to us men and women, but because human life is itself a gift which must be defended from various forms of debasement. 

 


USA the land of the free? Not any more! Genderless Marriage has put a stop to that - what happened when Georgia tried to pass a bill that would:
-Protect a pastor from being forced to perform a gay wedding against his will.
-Protect religious organizations from being forced to host gay weddings against their will.
-Protect religious organizations from being forced to hire someone who opposes their fundamental tenets, beliefs, and goals.

269 (b):   Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross is nothing else than the culmination of the way he lived his entire life.

 Moved by his example, we want to enter fully into the fabric of society, sharing the lives of all, listening to their concerns, helping them materially and spiritually in their needs, rejoicing with those who rejoice, weeping with those who weep; arm in arm with others, we are committed to building a new world.

 But we do so not from a sense of obligation, not as a burdensome duty, but as the result of a personal decision which brings us joy and gives meaning to our lives.

2006-04-02,03,04,05 West River Hospital - birth of baby Liu whose family live near Assisi Center

Yesterday at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre it was with some trepidation that I went to the entrance of Day Room 7B to meet someone who had asked to see me. Trepidation because my last visit to TB, one week ago, "cost" me HK$4,000 after a group of asylum seekers begged me to pay their bail money so they could be free (until their court cases are heard in a several week's time). ....which I did ....heart winning over head.  Well, since then the "cost" has already been covered by two kind HK friends - who know nothing about the 7B group - who have put some oil in the lamp since last week. The Good Lord seems to be saying "you look after your job of responding to people's needs and I'll take care of supply"

For the menu of Good Friday, I was going to note that this year Good Friday was on March 25, which in Christian tradition is the day when Jesus was conceived in Mary's womb ("The Annunciation").  

I remembered that the same thing happened a few years ago. And it set me thinking - that's the sort of perfect timing one would expect from Heaven .... and what extra suffering it would have caused both Jesus and Mary. 

But then I remembered how volumes have been written about December 25 not being Jesus' real birthday ... "December 25 was a pagan festival taken over by Christians" etc.  Which means March 25 would not have been his conception day.

And then last night I read this: The date of the first Good Friday which describes how Saint Augustine and other early Church writers regarded March 25 as the real date of Jesus conception and death!  

"This is also an indication that the date of the celebration of the birth of Jesus on 25 December was not taken from the Roman celebration of “Sol Invictus” but from the earlier Christian tradition of the date of the death of Jesus"

Judith 7

Holofernes laid siege against the Israelite mountain town of Bethulia.

Holofernes seized control of Bethulia's  water supply springs,
thinking that thirst would force the Israelites to surrender.

For 34 days the siege continued, until the people of Bethulia were weak from thirst.

The people of Bethulia prayed hard to God for help. The leaders of Bethulia planned to hold out for 5 more days before surrendering. A feeling of hopelessness hung over the town.

God, help of the helpless, please help people who are in big trouble

Jesus also appeared to the disciples at the Sea of Galilee, when Peter, John and 5 other disciples were fishing. They had spent all night in their boat, but had caught nothing

In the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, though the disciples did not recognize him. He called out "Lower your net on the right side of the boat"

Immediately the net filled with fish. John realized that the man on the shore was Jesus. John said to Peter "It is the Lord", and they returned to the shore, which was only about 100 meters away. The net had 153 big fish, but did not break

Jesus had prepared some bread. He also had some fish cooking on a charcoal fire. He said "Come and have breakfast"

Jesus, Risen Lord, without you, no fish. With you, 153 fish. Please help me be more aware of your presence in my life

4. In 1971, eight years after Pacem in Terris, Blessed Pope Paul VI referred to the ecological concern as “a tragic consequence” of unchecked human activity: “Due to an ill-considered exploitation of nature, humanity runs the risk of destroying it and becoming in turn a victim of this degradation”.[2] 

He spoke in similar terms to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations about the potential for an “ecological catastrophe under the effective explosion of industrial civilization”, and stressed “the urgent need for a radical change in the conduct of humanity”, inasmuch as “the most extraordinary scientific advances, the most amazing technical abilities, the most astonishing economic growth, unless they are accompanied by authentic social and moral progress, will definitively turn against man”.[3]

269 (a): Jesus himself is the model of this method of evangelization which brings us to the very heart of his people.

 How good it is for us to contemplate the closeness which he shows to everyone

If he speaks to someone, he looks into their eyes with deep love and concern: “Jesus, looking upon him, loved him” (Mk 10:21 ).

 We see how accessible he is, as he draws near the blind man (cf. Mk 10:46 -52) and eats and drinks with sinners (cf. Mk 2:16 ) without worrying about being thought a glutton and a drunkard himself (cf. Mt 11:19 ).

We see his sensitivity in allowing a sinful woman to anoint his feet (cf. Lk 7:36 -50) and in receiving Nicodemus by night (cf. Jn 3:1-15).

Yesterday at Hei Ling Chau Correctional Institution I showed this photo of Pope Francis at a drug treatment centre to many inmates - and I also showed them some Chinese characters written on the back of the photo saying "Pope at Rome drug treatment centre". Said one inmate, in all seriousness, not joking "Is the Pope on drugs?"

What does it mean that
 Jesus is risen?



 It means that the love of God is stronger than evil and death

It means that the love of God can transform our lives and let desert places in our hearts bloom

3. More than fifty years ago, with the world teetering on the brink of nuclear crisis, Pope Saint John XXIII wrote an Encyclical which not only rejected war but offered a proposal for peace. He addressed his message Pacem in Terris to the entire “Catholic world” and indeed “to all men and women of good will”.

Now, faced as we are with global environmental deterioration, I wish to address every person living on this planet. In my Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, I wrote to all the members of the Church with the aim of encouraging ongoing missionary renewal.

In this Encyclical, I would like to enter into dialogue with all people about our common home.

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel             Full text

268.  The word of God also invites us to recognise that we are a people: “Once you were no people but now you are God’s people” (1 Pet 2:10 ).

 To be evangelizers of souls, we need to develop a spiritual taste for being close to people’s lives and to discover that this is itself a source of great joy.

 Mission is at once a passion for Jesus and a passion for his people. 

When we stand before Jesus crucified, we see the depth of his love which exalts and sustains us, but at the same time, unless we are blind, we begin to realize that Jesus’ gaze, burning with love, expands to embrace all his people.

 We realize once more that he wants to make use of us to draw closer to his beloved people. He takes us from the midst of his people and he sends us to his people; without this sense of belonging we cannot understand our deepest identity.

 


Also at Hei Ling Chau yesterday (see top of today's menu) another inmate asked me - in all seriousness, not joking - "Is the Pope a Catholic?" !

When Holofernes heard that the Israelites were resisting him he was very angry.

He asked Achior, leader of the neighboring Ammonites, for information about the Israelites.

Achior told Holofernes of the Israelites' history: how God had freed them from Egypt, how they had conquered the land of Canaan, and how God protected them.

Holofernes ignored Achior's advice and decided to attack the Israelites.

Dear God, please protect our country from war and strife

That same day, two of Jesus' disciples were on their way from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus, about seven km from Jerusalem

As they talked about all that had happened, Jesus himself joined them as they walked along. But they did not recognize him

When Jesus asked them what they were talking about, they said "About Jesus of Nazareth,  and how our leaders had him crucified. And how some women in our group went to Jesus' tomb and were told by angels that he was alive"

2. This sister (the earth) now cries out to us because of the harm we have inflicted on her by our irresponsible use and abuse of the goods with which God has endowed her.

We have come to see ourselves as her lords and masters, entitled to plunder her at will. The violence present in our hearts, wounded by sin, is also reflected in the symptoms of sickness evident in the soil, in the water, in the air and in all forms of life. 

This is why the earth herself, burdened and laid waste, is among the most abandoned and maltreated of our poor; she “groans in travail” (Rom 8:22).

We have forgotten that we ourselves are dust of the earth (cf. Gen 2:7); our very bodies are made up of her elements, we breathe her air and we receive life and refreshment from her waters

267.  In union with Jesus, we seek what he seeks and we love what he loves.

 In the end, what we are seeking is the glory of the Father; we live and act “for the praise of his glorious grace” (Eph 1:6).

 If we wish to commit ourselves fully and perseveringly, we need to leave behind every other motivation.

 This is our definitive, deepest and greatest motivation, the ultimate reason and meaning behind all we do: the glory of the Father which Jesus sought at every moment of his life.

 As the Son, he rejoices eternally to be “close to the Father’s heart” (Jn 1:18 ). If we are missionaries, it is primarily because Jesus told us that “by this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit” (Jn 15:8). Beyond all our own preferences and interests, our knowledge and motivations, we evangelize for the greater glory of the Father who loves us.

Two centuries ago, poor people in England were sent to prison in Australia for stealing a loaf of bread.
Well, not much has changed: recently I met an asylum seeker who was imprisoned in HK for 4 weeks for stealing 5 oranges from a supermarket. I cheered him up slightly by pointing out that if his offence had been in Saudi Arabia he might have had an arm cut off ...to which he replied..."I guess that makes one month look ok"

Nebuchadnezzar summoned his top general Holofernes and gave him a huge army to punish the nations that had not joined him for the war against Arphaxad.

Nation after nation, people after people, fell to the sword of Holofernes.

Some places  made peace with Holofernes by giving him all their possessions and then becoming slaves of Nebuchadnezzar, worshipping Nebuchadnezzar as a god.

As the army of Holofernes approached Israel, the Israelites fasted and  prayed to God for help.
They also blocked the mountain passes to delay Holofernes' advance.

Dear God, please help nations
which have been invaded by other nations

Psalm 137

By the rivers of Babylon we sat and cried, remembering Zion. On the poplars that grew there we hung up our harps.

1. “LAUDATO SI’, mi’ Signore” – “Praise be to you, my Lord”. In the words of this beautiful canticle, Saint Francis of Assisi reminds us that our common home, the earth, is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us. “Praise be to you, my Lord, through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us, and who produces various fruit with coloured flowers and herbs”.


Last Saturday morning I joined a group of very special people at McDonald's Next in Admiralty on HK Island, to discuss the formation of a new group to help poor people. Since the group hopes to support other groups and help people make contact with other groups, one man suggested the group is sort of working underground .... supporting those above the ground....so...a good name would be "Earth Worms". Just as he said this, the McDonald's computer projected a new image to its screen in this newest McDs in HK:  a cartoon with dozens of .... worms!  God's way of saying the formation of this group is a good idea!

(246) God of love, show us our place in this world as channels of your love for all the creatures of this earth, for not one of them is forgotten in your sight.


Enlighten those who possess power and money that they may avoid the sin of indifference, that they may love the common good, advance the weak, and care for this world in which we live.

 The poor and the earth are crying out. O Lord, seize us with your power and light, help us to protect all life, to prepare for a better future, for the coming of your Kingdom of justice, peace, love and beauty.
Praise be to you! Amen.
     

This is the final article from Laudato Si. Now what? I think it's just like the Bible: I need to keep on reading it! So, tomorrow, let's go back to the very first article ... hoping to understand it better, and trying harder to put its ideas into practice

Judith 1

When Nebuchadnezzar was king of the Assyrians, he fought a war with King Arphaxad and his supporting nations.

Nebuchadnezzar sent a message to the nations near Assyria to help him fight Arphaxad.

But the peoples of those places ignored Nebuchadnezzar. They thought victory was beyond him.

But Nebuchadnezzar was in fact victorious and after his victory he set out to punish the nations which had refused his call for help.

Dear God, please help all nations to live in peace with each other

Psalm 136

O give thanks to the Lord for he is good, for his great love is without end.

It was his wisdom which made the skies, for his great love is without end.

It was he who made the sun, moon and stars, for his great love is without end.

It was he who rescued and protected his people Israel, for his great love is without end.

He gives food to all living things,
for his great love is without end.

To the God of heaven give thanks, for his great love is without end.

Galatians 5.1-6

When Christ freed us, he meant us to remain free. Stand firm then and do not return to a life of slavery to Jewish Law

As a Christian, it doesn't matter if you are circumcised or not.
What matters is faith that is put into loving action

Jesus, help people whose lives are being damaged  by unreasonable religious laws

Matthew 28.1-15

Jesus died on Friday afternoon.
Early on Sunday morning, two women went to Jesus' tomb.

Suddenly there was a violent earthquake, and an angel from heaven came and rolled away the big stone at the tomb's entrance. The guards at the tomb were terrified of the angel.

The angel said to the women "Do not be afraid. I know you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here. He has risen from the dead. Go and tell his disciples he has risen from the dead and will see them in Galilee".

The women were filled with joy and ran to tell this news to the disciples.

As they left the tomb area, Jesus himself appeared to them and said  "Do not be afraid. Go and tell the disciples they must go to Galilee. They will see me there".

Lord Jesus, by your Cross and Resurrection you have set us free.
You are the Savior of the world

  Easter Monday

Easter Monday reminds me of the rolling away of the rock from the tomb, Jesus's body gone, and the women encountering Jesus "risen" and seemingly very much alive.  Once the women report this incredible event to the disciples, they must have been left with a huge question, that being, "Now What?"

Peter responds quickly by "preaching" to the crowds and religious leaders what exactly happened to the man named Jesus, recounting his life among the people and how he was crucified. I believe that every Easter Monday, after having journeyed through lent, and holy week, I too, am confronted with the question:  "Now What?"  Perhaps, it's just not me, but the entire Church!

266. It is not the same thing to try to build the world with Jesus' Gospel as to try to do so by our own lights.

 We know well that with Jesus life becomes richer and that with him it is easier to find meaning in everythingThis is why we evangelize

A true missionary, who never ceases to be a disciple, knows that Jesus walks with him, speaks to him, breathes with him, works with him.

 He senses Jesus alive with him in the midst of the missionary enterprise
