Pope Francis hailed as saviour by Syrian refugees taken in by Vatican

Over the next few weeks let's say a prayer each day that Filipinos will choose the best leader.

Let's do whatever we can to stop this monster from becoming president ...and also stop the son of Marcos from gaining power. HK Filipino inmates say Grace Poe is "clean".

Background: Who elects the president?

First Maccabees 1

Some Jews abandoned their religion and made a pact with King Antiochus Epiphanes, a Seleucid king of the Greeks.

Antiochus conquered many lands, including Israel. He plundered the Temple and forced the Jews to renounce their religion.

But many Jews courageously stood firm and were punished with death.

This was a sad and terrible time for Israel.

Dear God, please help us stay faithful to you

Psalms 14-15

So many people live and act as if God doesn't exist. Some foolish people even say there is no God.

So many people have left the way of justice and truth. So many people follow the way of falsehood.

Lord, help us to live as we should. Help us not to slander, help us not to wrong others.

Lord, help us to stand firm in the way of goodness

Recommended: check these readings early morning, think about them during the day, check them again at night. This habit gives us extra energy, courage, motivation, peace and compassion for each day

Ephesians 5.1-4

Follow Christ by loving as he loved us

Among you there must be not even a mention of promiscuity or impurity in any of its forms

There must be no coarseness, or salacious talk and jokes  - all this is wrong for you

Jesus, help me control my mind and my tongue

Recording

 John 5.17-30

Jesus said to the religious leaders "My Father goes on working, and so do I.  Whoever refuses honor to the Son, refuses honor to the Father who sent him

The Father judges no one. He has entrusted all judgement to the Son

A time will come  when the dead will leave their graves at the sound of the Son's voice. Those who did good, will rise again to life. Those who did evil, will face condemnation".

Jesus, some day you are going to be my judge. On that day may I hear you say "I was hungry, and you gave me food etc"  (Matthew 25. 31 - 46)

Recording

Yesterday afternoon Christine (ex-inmate, cancer 4 patient for whom I've been asking prayers) was transferred to another hospital ...where the social worker said that hopefully she will be discharged in the near future ....then back to nursing home? (background).
We keep praying: Jesus, please tsunami Christine with your healing love!  .
HK's hospitals certainly are among the best in the world. The care and dedication shown Christine has been really wonderful.

10:   (Recording of 10:

The majestic early chapters of Genesis present the human couple in its deepest reality. Those first pages of the Bible make a number of very clear statements. The first, which Jesus paraphrases, says that “God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (1:27). It is striking that the “image of God” here refers to the couple, “male and female”. Does this mean that sex is a property of God himself, or that God has a divine female companion, as some ancient religions held? Naturally, the answer is no. We know how clearly the Bible rejects as idolatrous such beliefs, found among the Canaanites of the Holy Land. God’s transcendence is preserved, yet inasmuch as he is also the Creator, the fruitfulness of the human couple is a living and effective “image”, a visible sign of his creative act.

22:   (Recording of 22:

These problems are closely linked to a throwaway culture which affects the excluded just as it quickly reduces things to rubbish.

To cite one example, most of the paper we produce is thrown away and not recycled. It is hard for us to accept that the way natural ecosystems work is exemplary: plants synthesize nutrients which feed herbivores; these in turn become food for carnivores, which produce significant quantities of organic waste which give rise to new generations of plants.

But our industrial system, at the end of its cycle of production and consumption, has not developed the capacity to absorb and reuse waste and by-products. We have not yet managed to adopt a circular model of production capable of preserving resources for present and future generations, while limiting as much as possible the use of non-renewable resources, moderating their consumption, maximizing their efficient use, reusing and recycling them.

A serious consideration of this issue would be one way of counteracting the throwaway culture which affects the entire planet, but it must be said that only limited progress has been made in this regard.

With the Holy Spirit, Mary is always present in the midst of the people.

She joined the disciples in praying for the coming of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:14 ) and thus made possible the missionary outburst which took place at Pentecost.

She is the Mother of the Church which evangelizes, and without her we could never truly understand the spirit of the new evangelization.

Pope’s poignant visit to refugees in Lesbos
‘Before they are numbers, these people are human beings’

It lasted barely five hours, began on the asphalt of an island airport, moved to a prison-like camp, stopped at a harbour and ended on the runway again. But when Pope Francis’s lightning tour of Lesbos was over on Saturday, almost nothing was as it had been before.

Pope's flight conference on way back to Rome after visit to Lesbos

The children there, he said, had given him drawings (which he showed those present) in which they asked for peace and expressed their pain and fear after having seen terrible things like other children drowning.

Esther 6-8

On the night between the two banquets, the king could not sleep. To induce sleep he started reading the history of his kingdom.

He read how some years ago two of his eunuchs planned to assassinate him, but the plot was foiled by Mordecai.

The king asked Haman how to honor a man whom the king wished to honor.

Haman thought the king was talking about himself, Haman, so
he suggested royal clothes, a royal horse and a royal parade.

The king agreed and told Haman to honor Mordecai in this way.
This was a great humiliation for Haman.

And it got even worse for Haman. At the second banquet, Esther told the king that she was Jewish and that Haman planned to kill all Jews.

The result: Haman was hanged on the gallows which he had prepared for Mordecai, and the Jews were not only spared annihilation - they were given places of honor in the kingdom.

The Jews praised God for all his help through Mordecai.

Dear God, please stop people like Haman  from committing injustice

Ephesians 4.22-32

You must give up your old way of life. You must put aside your old self and its delusions

Your mind must be renewed by a spiritual revolution, so that you can follow a way of life based on goodness and truth

From now on, no more lies. Delete anger from your mind at the end of each day

Anyone who was a thief must stop stealing. Try to find a decent job

Guard against foul talk. Let your conversation encourage people, not drag them down

Avoid grudges. Don't lose your temper. Don't raise your voice to anyone. Don't call people names

Be friends with one another, and kind, forgiving one another as readily as God forgives us in Christ

Jesus, help me put these words into practice

John 5.1-14

Jesus again went up to Jerusalem for a Jewish festival. In a building near the Sheep Gate, he saw many sick people

One paralyzed man had been ill for 38 years
Jesus said to him  "Do you want to be well again?
Get up, pick up your bed and walk".

The man was healed at once. He picked up his bed and walked away.

After a while Jesus met him in the Temple and said to him "Now that you are well, do not sin any more"

Jesus, if my sickness is due to some sin, please forgive me and heal me

    Hurray for Limerick!

Limerick is a county in the south of Ireland.  In the Catholic Diocese of Limerick is Bishop Leahy.  Bishop Leahy  demonstrated a courageous and visionary leadership, by orchestrating a three day diocesan synod, that constituted not only clergy and theologians, but...the laity, and in particular, the lay women of the Church.

The marvel that I see in this three day synod, is that Bishop Leahy and the clergy present. made sure that the women of the Church, and the laity in general, were sincerely consulted and included in the decisions of the day.

Hurray for Limerick!  May this "huge" event, not be un-noticed but, inspire a creation of further like synods in Ireland and in many, many dioceses around the globe. Bishop Leahy and all the synod participants have shown the entire RC Church that inclusive synods are possible and indeed necessary to move the Church forward with Christ and the Holy Spirit at the helm.  This event was certainly the sign of hope that I was longing for at this time, especially, as Pentecost approaches.

9:  (Recording of 9:)

Let us cross the threshold of this tranquil home, with its family sitting around the festive table. At the centre we see the father and mother, a couple with their personal story of love. They embody the primordial divine plan clearly spoken of by Christ himself: “Have you not read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female?” (Mt 19:4). We hear an echo of the command found in the Book of Genesis: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, and they shall become one flesh (Gen 2:24)”.

Account must also be taken of the pollution produced by residue, including dangerous waste present in different areas. Each year hundreds of millions of tons of waste are generated, much of it non-biodegradable, highly toxic and radioactive, from homes and businesses, from construction and demolition sites, from clinical, electronic and industrial sources.

The earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth. In many parts of the planet, the elderly lament that once beautiful landscapes are now covered with rubbish.

Industrial waste and chemical products utilized in cities and agricultural areas can lead to bioaccumulation in the organisms of the local population, even when levels of toxins in those places are low. Frequently no measures are taken until after people’s health has been irreversibly affected.

283:   (Recording of 283:)

The great men and women of God were great intercessors.

Intercession is like a “leaven” in the heart of the Trinity. It is a way of penetrating the Father’s heart and discovering new dimensions which can shed light on concrete situations and change them.

We can say that God’s heart is touched by our intercession, yet in reality he is always there first. What our intercession achieves is that his power, his love and his faithfulness are shown ever more clearly in the midst of the people.

Vatican II, Gaudium et Spes, Francis and Mercy

Pope Francis has served the Church well in reclaiming the collective memory of Vatican II, in validating its authority and affirming its vision. The Council led the People of God out of a tired old near static ecclesiastical world into a stunning new human environment with all the challenges of modernity. A major accomplishment of Vatican II was to shift the Church’s centre of gravity away from itself into the very centre of human society, to embrace the world and evangelise it from the inside as its citizens and not from the outside as strangers

The Joy of Love - Pope Francis' letter - on love in the family      Full English text

8:   (Recording of 8:)

The Bible is full of families, births, love stories and family crises. This is true from its very first page, with the appearance of Adam and Eve’s family with all its burden of violence but also its enduring strength (cf. Gen 4) to its very last page, where we behold the wedding feast of the Bride and the Lamb (Rev 21:2, 9). Jesus’ description of the two houses, one built on rock and the other on sand (cf. Mt 7:24-27), symbolizes any number of family situations shaped by the exercise of their members’ freedom, for, as the poet says, “every home is a lampstand”.5 Let us now enter one of those houses, led by the Psalmist with a song that even today resounds in both Jewish and Christian wedding liturgies:

“Blessed is every one who fears the Lord, who walks in his ways!
You shall eat the fruit of the labour of your hands; you shall be happy, and it shall go well with you.
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots round your table.
Thus shall the man be blessed who fears the Lord.
The Lord bless you from Zion!
May you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life!
May you see your children’s children! Peace be upon Israel!” (Ps 128:1-6).

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
     我主應受讚美

20:   (Recording of 20:)

Some forms of pollution are part of people’s daily experience. Exposure to atmospheric pollutants produces a broad spectrum of health hazards, especially for the poor, and causes millions of premature deaths.

People get sick, for example, from breathing high levels of smoke from fuels used in cooking or heating. There is also pollution that affects everyone, caused by transport, industrial fumes, substances which contribute to the acidification of soil and water, fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides and agrotoxins in general.

Technology, which, linked to business interests, is presented as the only way of solving these problems, in fact proves incapable of seeing the mysterious network of relations between things, and so sometimes solves one problem only to create others.

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel             Full English text     Full Chinese text

282:   (Recording of 282:

This attitude becomes a prayer of gratitude to God for others. “First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you” (Rom 1:8). It is constant thankfulness: “I give thanks to God always for you because of the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus” (1 Cor 1:4); “I thank my God in all my remembrance of you” (Phil 1:3).

Far from being suspicious, negative and despairing, it is a spiritual gaze born of deep faith which acknowledges what God is doing in the lives of others

At the same time, it is the gratitude which flows from a heart attentive to others. When evangelizers rise from prayer, their hearts are more open; freed of self-absorption, they are desirous of doing good and sharing their lives with others.

Esther 5

After Esther prayed to God for a long time, she went to the palace and presented herself to the king.

At first the king was angry that Esther came without being invited, but then his heart softened and he welcomed her.

When King Ahasuerus saw that Esther was distressed, he asked her what was wrong. He promised to do anything for her.

Esther asked that there be two special banquets for herself, the king and Haman.  The king agreed and the banquets were arranged.

Haman meanwhile was making his own arrangements: a high gallows on which to hang Mordecai.

The official believed Jesus and started his journey home. While on the journey,  he was met by his servants who told him the boy was alive and well.  "The fever left him yesterday, they said, "at 1pm"

7:   (Recording of 7:)
Given the rich fruits of the two-year Synod process, this Exhortation will treat, in different ways, a wide variety of questions. This explains its inevitable length.  Consequently, I do not recommend a rushed reading of the text.

The greatest benefit, for families themselves and for those engaged in the family apostolate, will come if each part is read patiently and carefully, or if attention is paid to the parts dealing with their specific needs.

It is likely, for example, that married couples will be more concerned with Chapters Four and Five, and pastoral ministers with Chapter Six, while everyone should feel challenged by Chapter Eight. It is my hope that, in reading this text, all will feel called to love and cherish family life, for “families are not a problem; they are first and foremost an opportunity”.4

19:   (Recording of 19:)
Following a period of irrational confidence in progress and human abilities, some sectors of society are now adopting a more critical approach.

We see increasing sensitivity to the environment and the need to protect nature, along with a growing concern, both genuine and distressing, for what is happening to our planet.

Let us review, however cursorily, those questions which are troubling us today and which we can no longer sweep under the carpet.

Our goal is not to amass information or to satisfy curiosity, but rather to become painfully aware, to dare to turn what is happening to the world into our own personal suffering and thus to discover what each of us can do about it.

One form of prayer moves us particularly to take up the task of evangelization and to seek the good of others: it is the prayer of intercession.

Let us peer for a moment into the heart of Saint Paul , to see what his prayer was like. It was full of people: “Every time I pray for all of you I pray with joy......You have a permanent place in my heart” (Phil 1:4, 7).

Here we see that intercessory prayer does not divert us from true contemplation, since authentic contemplation always has a place for others.

Esther 4

When Mordecai heard about Haman's plan, Mordecai asked Esther to appeal to Ahasuerus for help.

Mordecai and Esther both knew that to approach the king
without an invitation was a crime punishable by death, unless the king saw fit to welcome an uninvited person.

So they prayed to God to move the heart of Ahasuerus to welcome Esther.

Dear God, please move the hearts of rulers to care for their people

Psalm 7

The Joy of Love - Pope Francis' letter - on love in the family      Full English text

06:   (Recording of 06:)
I will begin with an opening chapter inspired by the Scriptures, to set a proper tone. I will then examine the actual situation of families, in order to keep firmly grounded in reality. I will go on to recall some essential aspects of the Church’s teaching on marriage and the family, thus paving the way for two central chapters dedicated to love.

I will then highlight some pastoral approaches that can guide us in building sound and fruitful homes in accordance with God’s plan, with a full chapter devoted to the raising of children. Finally, I will offer an invitation to mercy and the pastoral discernment of those situations that fall short of what the Lord demands of us, and conclude with a brief discussion of family spirituality.

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
     我主應受讚美

18:   (Recording of 18:

The continued acceleration of changes affecting humanity and the planet is coupled today with a more intensified pace of life and work which might be called “rapidification”.

Although change is part of the working of complex systems, the speed with which human activity has developed contrasts with the naturally slow pace of biological evolution.

Moreover, the goals of this rapid and constant change are not necessarily geared to the common good or to integral and sustainable human development.

Change is something desirable, yet it becomes a source of anxiety when it causes harm to the world and to the quality of life of much of humanity.

280:   (Recording of 280:

Keeping our missionary fervour alive calls for firm trust in the Holy Spirit, for it is he who “helps us in our weakness” (Rom 8:26 ). But this generous trust has to be nourished, and so we need to invoke the Spirit constantly.  He can heal whatever causes us to flag in the missionary endeavour.

It is true that this trust in the unseen can cause us to feel disoriented: it is like being plunged into the deep and not knowing what we will find. I myself have frequently experienced this. Yet there is no greater freedom than that of allowing oneself to be guided by the Holy Spirit, renouncing the attempt to plan and control everything to the last detail, and instead letting him enlighten, guide and direct us, leading us wherever he wills.

The Holy Spirit knows well what is needed in every time and place. This is what it means to be mysteriously fruitful!

Esther 3

About this time Haman from the land of Agag was promoted by King Ahasuerus to a top position. All other officials were to bow and prostrate themselves before Haman.

Mordecai refused to bow to Haman. This made Haman very angry.

Haman found out that Mordecai was a Jew. Haman decided to kill Mordecai and all Jews in the kingdom.

Ahasuerus agreed to Haman's plan
and a decree to this effect was announced: all Jews were to be killed on the 14th day of the 12th month.

Dear God, please protect poor people from people like Haman

Lead me, Lord, in the way you want me to go.

This is what I pray, kneeling before the Father from whom
every family, whether spiritual or natural, takes it name:

May he give you  power through his Spirit for your hidden self to grow strong

May Christ live in your hearts through faith

Planted in love and built on love, may you continually focus on the love of Christ, until your life is filled with that love

Glory be to him whose power  working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine

Glory be to him from generation to generation in the Church  and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen

John 4.1-14

Jesus visited a Samaritan town. Near a well there, Jesus said to a Samaritan woman "Give me a drink"

He also said to her  "If you drink water from this well, you will get thirsty again. But if you drink the water that I shall give, you will never be thirsty again.

The water that I shall give will turn into a spring of eternal life inside you"

Jesus, please give me a drink of your eternal life water  - which is your Holy Spirit

The Joy of Love - Pope Francis' letter - on love in the family      Full English text

5:   (Recording of 5:
This Exhortation is especially timely in this Jubilee Year of Mercy. First, because it represents an invitation to Christian families to value the gifts of marriage and the family, and to persevere in a love strengthened by the virtues of generosity, commitment, fidelity and patience. Second, be-cause it seeks to encourage everyone to be a sign of mercy and closeness wherever family life re-mains imperfect or lacks peace and joy.

Robert Mickens

Who will bring forth Pope Francis' vision?
The vast majority of the world's bishops, younger clergy (under the age of 45 or so) and seminarians are squarely on the road that St. John Paul II and his German successor built. Too many find themselves greatly conflicted by Francis and all that he is doing to shake up and renew the church

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
     我主應受讚美

17:   (Recording of 17:
Theological and philosophical reflections on the situation of humanity and the world can sound tiresome and abstract, unless they are grounded in a fresh analysis of our present situation, which is in many ways unprecedented in the history of humanity.

So, before considering how faith brings new incentives and requirements with regard to the world of which we are a part, I will briefly turn to what is happening to our common home.

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel             Full English text     Full Chinese text

279:   (Recording of 279:

Because we do not always see these seeds growing, we need an interior certainty, a conviction that God is able to act in every situation, even amid apparent setbacks: “We have this treasure in earthen vessels” (2 Cor 4:7).

This certainty is often called “a sense of mystery”. It involves knowing with certitude that all those who entrust themselves to God in love will bear good fruit (cf. Jn 15:5).

This fruitfulness is often invisible, elusive and unquantifiable.

We can know quite well that our lives will be fruitful, without claiming to know how, or where, or when

We may be sure that none of our acts of love will be lost, nor any of our acts of sincere concern for others. No single act of love for God will be lost, no generous effort is meaningless, no painful endurance is wasted. All of these encircle our world like a vital force.

Psalm 4

At the end of this day I praise you, Lord, for all your love and help.

O people of the world, how long will you close your hearts to God?
How long you will keep on chasing false goals?

Lord, you have put into my heart a joy that cannot be obtained by big meals and plenty of wine.

I will lie down in peace and sleep comes at once, for you, Lord, make me dwell in safety and peace

Thank you, Lord, for your love and help right through today

John replied "I am not the Christ. I am the one who was sent to prepare his way. The bride is only for the bridegroom. But the bridegroom's friend is happy when he hears the bridegroom's voice. This is the happiness  I now feel

He must become more and more important. I must become less and less important

Anyone who believes in the Son has eternal life. But anyone who refuses to believe in the Son will not have eternal life"

I must also say that the Synod process proved both impressive and illuminating. I am grateful for the many contributions that helped me to appreciate more fully the problems faced by families throughout the world. The various interventions of the Synod Fathers, to which I paid close heed, made up, as it were, a multifaceted gem reflecting many legitimate concerns and honest questions. For this reason, I thought it appropriate to prepare a post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation to gather the contributions of the two recent Synods on the family, while adding other considerations as an aid to reflection, dialogue and pastoral practice, and as a help and encouragement to families in their daily commitments and challenges.

278:   (Recording of 278:

Faith also means believing in God, believing that he truly loves us, that he is alive, that he is mysteriously capable of intervening, that he does not abandon us, and that he brings good out of evil by his power and his infinite creativity.

It means believing that he marches triumphantly in history with those who “are called and chosen and faithful” ( Rev 17:14 ).

Let us believe the Gospel when it tells us that the kingdom of God is already present in this world and is growing, here and there, and in different ways: like the small seed which grows into a great tree (cf. Mt 13:31-32), like the measure of leaven that makes the dough rise (cf. Mt 13:33) and like the good seed that grows amid the weeds (cf. Mt 13, 24-30) and can always pleasantly surprise us.

The kingdom is here, it returns, it struggles to flourish anew. Christ’s resurrection everywhere calls forth seeds of that new world; even if they are cut back, they grow again, for the resurrection is already secretly woven into the fabric of this history, for Jesus did not rise in vain. May we never remain on the sidelines of this march of living hope!

The Joy of Love - Pope Francis' letter - on love in the family

3:   (Recording of 3:

Since “time is greater than space”, I would make it clear that not all discussions of doctrinal, moral or pastoral issues need to be settled by interventions of the magisterium. Unity of teaching and practice is certainly necessary in the Church, but this does not preclude various ways of interpreting some aspects of that teaching or drawing certain consequences from it. This will always be the case as the Spirit guides us towards the entire truth (cf. Jn 16:13), until he leads us fully into the mystery of Christ and enables us to see all things as he does. Each country or region, moreover, can seek solutions better suited to its culture and sensitive to its traditions and local needs. For “cultures are in fact quite diverse and every general principle… needs to be inculturated, if it is to be respected and applied”.3

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
     我主應受讚美

15:   (Recording of 15:

It is my hope that this Encyclical Letter, which is now added to the body of the Church’s social teaching, can help us to acknowledge the appeal, immensity and urgency of the challenge we face

I will begin by briefly reviewing several aspects of the present ecological crisis, with the aim of drawing on the results of the best scientific research available today, letting them touch us deeply and provide a concrete foundation for the ethical and spiritual itinerary that follows.

I will then consider some principles drawn from the Judaeo-Christian tradition which can render our commitment to the environment more coherent. I will then attempt to get to the roots of the present situation, so as to consider not only its symptoms but also its deepest causes. This will help to provide an approach to ecology which respects our unique place as human beings in this world and our relationship to our surroundings.

In light of this reflection, I will advance some broader proposals for dialogue and action which would involve each of us as individuals, and also affect international policy. Finally, convinced as I am that change is impossible without motivation and a process of education, I will offer some inspired guidelines for human development to be found in the treasure of Christian spiritual experience.

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel             Full English text     Full Chinese text

277:   (Recording of 277:

New difficulties are constantly surfacing: experiences of failure and the human weaknesses which bring so much pain.

We all know from experience that sometimes a task does not bring the satisfaction we seek, results are few and changes are slow, and we are tempted to grow weary.

Yet lowering our arms momentarily out of weariness is not the same as lowering them for good, overcome by chronic discontent and by a listlessness that parches the soul.

It also happens that our hearts can tire of the struggle because in the end we are caught up in ourselves, in a careerism which thirsts for recognition, applause, rewards and status.

In this case we do not lower our arms, but we no longer grasp what we seek, the resurrection is not there. In cases like these, the Gospel, the most beautiful message that this world can offer, is buried under a pile of excuses
