Wisdom 10-19

Wisdom has been present in the world since the beginning of time.
Wisdom has always been a close friend of good people.

Wise people see God in the beauty of creation.

Foolish people are blind to God's presence in creation.

Wise people ponder God's goodness and kindness. Wise people  try to be good and kind to other people.

Lord, please help me see and imitate your goodness and kindness

Psalms 109-110

O God whom I praise, do not be silent, for people are bombarding me with  words of hate.

They speak to me with lying tongues and attack me without cause.

They repay me evil for good.
While I pray for them,  they show me hatred.

I have become an object of scorn.
Help me, Lord my God.

Lord, when people are unkind to me, please give me the grace to pray for them

2 Timothy 2.14-25

Remind everyone to avoid useless debates and discussions. These cause scandal and loss of faith

Be available for the Master to use you for any good work

Focus on goodness, faith, love and peace. Avoid futile speculations which only lead to quarrels

A servant of the Lord is not to engage in quarrels, but should be kind to everyone, a good teacher, and patient

Be gentle with anyone you have to correct

Jesus, please help me avoid useless discussions and arguments

Matthew 4.12-25

After his time in the desert, Jesus began preaching the same message as John the Baptist: "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand".

Jesus called four fishermen to become "fishers of men": Peter and his brother Andrew, James and his brother John. They left their boats and went with Jesus.

Jesus went all round the area of Galilee, preaching in local prayer halls and healing all kinds of sick people

News spread about the sick being healed, and soon even people from distant places came to Jesus to be healed.

Jesus, please heal the people I know who are sick: (...names...)

The Church is a family of families, constantly enriched by the lives of all those domestic churches.

“In virtue of the sacrament of matrimony, every family becomes, in effect, a good for the Church.

From this standpoint, reflecting on the interplay between the family and the Church will prove a precious gift for the Church in our time.

The Church is good for the family, and the family is good for the Church.

The safeguarding of the Lord’s gift in the sacrament of matrimony is a concern not only of individual families but of the entire Christian community”.102

90: Recording

This is not to put all living beings on the same level nor to deprive human beings of their unique worth and the tremendous responsibility it entails. Nor does it imply a divinization of the earth which would prevent us from working on it and protecting it in its fragility. Such notions would end up creating new imbalances which would deflect us from the reality which challenges us.[68]

At times we see an obsession with denying any pre-eminence to the human person; more zeal is shown in protecting other species than in defending the dignity which all human beings share in equal measure.

Certainly, we should be concerned lest other living beings be treated irresponsibly. But we should be particularly indignant at the enormous inequalities in our midst, whereby we continue to tolerate some considering themselves more worthy than others.

We fail to see that some are mired in desperate and degrading poverty, with no way out, while others have not the faintest idea of what to do with their possessions, vainly showing off their supposed superiority and leaving behind them so much waste which, if it were the case everywhere, would destroy the planet. In practice, we continue to tolerate that some consider themselves more human than others, as if they had been born with greater rights.

In the prevailing culture, priority is given to the outward, the immediate, the visible, the quick, the superficial and the provisional. What is real gives way to appearances.

In many countries globalization has meant a hastened deterioration of their own cultural roots and the invasion of ways of thinking and acting proper to other cultures which are economically advanced but ethically debilitated

This fact has been brought up by bishops from various continents in different Synods. The African bishops, for example, taking up the Encyclical Sollicitudo Rei Socialis, pointed out years ago that there have been frequent attempts to make the African countries “parts of a machine, cogs on a gigantic wheel. This is often true also in the field of social communications which, being run by centres mostly in the northern hemisphere, do not always give due consideration to the priorities and problems of such countries or respect their cultural make-up”.

By the same token, the bishops of Asia “underlined the external influences being brought to bear on Asian cultures. New patterns of behaviour are emerging as a result of over-exposure to the mass media… As a result, the negative aspects of the media and entertainment industries are threatening traditional values, and in particular the sacredness of marriage and the stability of the family”.

Wisdom 8-9

From my youth I sought and loved Wisdom. Wisdom teaches us temperance, prudence, justice and fortitude.

I prayed for Wisdom like this:

"God of our ancestors and Lord of mercy, in Wisdom you made all things.

Grant me Wisdom who was with you when you made the world.
May she teach me what is right,
so that I may be a good ruler.

Lord, please give me Wisdom, as you gave Wisdom to King Solomon

My recording of this reading

Psalm 108

My heart is ready, O God. I will sing, sing your praise. Awake, lyre and harp. I will awake the dawn.

I will thank you, Lord, among the peoples, praise you among the nations, for your love reaches to the heavens and your truth to the skies.

O Lord, come and deliver us today. Help us with your right hand.

Give us help in difficult situations. With your help we shall be brave.

Lord, we need your help every day

You have heard everything I teach in public. Hand it on to reliable people so that they in turn will be able to teach others

Remember the Good News that I carry: "Jesus Christ risen from the dead, sprung from the race of David"

Matthew 4.1-11

After he was baptized, Jesus spent about 40 days praying and fasting in the desert. During this time, he was tempted by Satan.

"If you are the Son of God,
change some stones into bread" said Satan.

Jesus replied "Human life needs more than bread. Life needs God's message".

Satan then took Jesus to a high place and said "Throw yourself down, since the angels will protect you".

Jesus replied "Presumption is a sin".

Then Satan  took Jesus to a high mountain and showed him all the nations of the world.

"Worship me and I will give you all these nations" said Satan.

Jesus replied "Go away, Satan! Only God is to be worshipped".

The devil then went away.

Jesus, please protect us from Satan and from evil

86: Recording

“With inner joy and deep comfort, the Church looks to the families who remain faithful to the teachings of the Gospel, encouraging them and thanking them for the testimony they offer.

For they bear witness, in a credible way, to the beauty of marriage as indissoluble and perpetually faithful.

Within the family ‘which could be called a domestic church’ (Lumen Gentium, 11), individuals enter upon an ecclesial experience of communion among persons, which reflects, through grace, the mystery of the Holy Trinity.

‘Here one learns endurance and the joy of work, fraternal love, generous - even repeated - forgiveness, and above all divine worship in prayer and the offering of one’s life’ (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1657)”.101

The created things of this world are not free of ownership: “For they are yours, O Lord, who love the living” (Wis 11:26).

This is the basis of our conviction that, as part of the universe, called into being by one Father, all of us are linked by unseen bonds and together form a kind of universal family, a sublime communion which fills us with a sacred, affectionate and humble respect.

Here I would reiterate that “God has joined us so closely to the world around us that we can feel the desertification of the soil almost as a physical ailment, and the extinction of a species as a painful disfigurement”.[67]

We also evangelize when we attempt to confront the various challenges which can arise. On occasion these may take the form of veritable attacks on religious freedom or new persecutions directed against Christians; in some countries these have reached alarming levels of hatred and violence.

In many places, the problem is more that of widespread indifference and relativism, linked to disillusionment and the crisis of ideologies which has come about as a reaction to anything which might appear totalitarian. This not only harms the Church but the fabric of society as a whole.

We should recognize how in a culture where each person wants to be bearer of his or her own subjective truth, it becomes difficult for citizens to devise a common plan which transcends individual gain and personal ambitions.

The Church is called to cooperate with parents through suitable pastoral initiatives, assisting them in the fulfilment of their educational mission.

She must always do this by helping them to appreciate their proper role and to realize that by their reception of the sacrament of marriage they become ministers of their children’s education.

In educating them, they build up the Church,99 and in so doing, they accept a God-given vocation.100

The bishops of Brazil have pointed out that nature as a whole not only manifests God but is also a locus of his presence.

The Spirit of life dwells in every living creature and calls us to enter into relationship with him.[65]

Discovering this presence leads us to cultivate the “ecological virtues”.[66]

This is not to forget that there is an infinite distance between God and the things of this world, which do not possess his fullness.

Otherwise, we would not be doing the creatures themselves any good either, for we would be failing to acknowledge their right and proper place. We would end up unduly demanding of them something which they, in their smallness, cannot give us.

Today’s economic mechanisms promote inordinate consumption, yet it is evident that unbridled consumerism combined with inequality proves doubly damaging to the social fabric.

Inequality eventually engenders a violence which recourse to arms cannot and never will be able to resolve. It serves only to offer false hopes to those clamouring for heightened security, even though nowadays we know that weapons and violence, rather than providing solutions, create new and more serious conflicts.

Some simply content themselves with blaming the poor and the poorer countries themselves for their troubles; indulging in unwarranted generalizations, they claim that the solution is an “education” that would tranquilize them, making them tame and harmless. All this becomes even more exasperating for the marginalized in the light of the widespread and deeply rooted corruption found in many countries – in their governments, businesses and institutions – whatever the political ideology of their leaders.

Psalm 107 (a)  (Desert ..)

O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His great love is without end.

Let them say this, those the Lord has helped, people from east and west, north and south.

Some people wandered in the desert, lost and unable to find their way to safety.

In their hunger and thirst they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and showed them the way to safety.

Let them thank the Lord for his love, for he fills the hungry with good things.

My recording of this reading

Psalm 107 (b)  (Prison ..)

Some people were prisoners in misery and chains, living in darkness and gloom.

In their distress they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and restored their freedom.

Let them thank the Lord for his goodness, for he shatters the iron bars of prisons.

Recording

All our problems, difficulties and trials can be summed up by the four images of this psalm: desert, prison, sickness, storm ... from all of which the Lord rescues us!

Psalm 107 (c) (Sickness ..)

Some people were sick on account of their sins, unable to eat,  and close to death.

They cried to the Lord in their need. He healed them and saved them from the grave.

Let them thank the Lord for his love, for the wonders he does for us.

Recording

Psalm 107 (d) (Storms ..)

Some people sailed to the sea in ships and were caught in terrifying storms.

They cried to the Lord in their need, and he calmed the sea and wind.

Let them thank the Lord for his love, for the wonders he does for us.

Whoever is wise should meditate on these things and reflect on the love of the Lord.

Thank you Lord, for your rescuing love

The Synod Fathers also wished to emphasize that “one of the fundamental challenges facing families today is undoubtedly that of raising children, made all the more difficult and complex by today’s cultural reality and the powerful influence of the media”.94

“The Church assumes a valuable role in supporting families, starting with Christian initiation, through welcoming communities”.95

At the same time I feel it important to reiterate that the overall education of children is a “most serious duty” and at the same time a “primary right” of parents.96

This is not just a task or a burden, but an essential and inalienable right that parents are called to defend and of which no one may claim to deprive them.

The State offers educational programs in a subsidiary way, supporting the parents in their indeclinable role; parents themselves enjoy the right to choose freely the kind of education - accessible and of good quality - which they wish to give their children in accordance with their convictions.

Schools do not replace parents, but complement them. This is a basic principle: “all other participants in the process of education are only able to carry out their responsibilities in the name of the parents, with their consent and, to a certain degree, with their authorization”.97

Still, “a rift has opened up between the family and society, between family and the school; the educational pact today has been broken and thus the educational alliance between society and the family is in crisis”.98

When we can see God reflected in all that exists, our hearts are moved to praise the Lord for all his creatures and to worship him in union with them. This sentiment finds magnificent expression in the hymn of Saint Francis of Assisi:

Praised be you, my Lord, with all your creatures, especially Sir Brother Sun, who is the day and through whom you give us light. And he is beautiful and radiant with great splendour; and bears a likeness of you, Most High.

Praised be you, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars, in heaven you formed them clear and precious and beautiful.

Praised be you, my Lord, through Brother Wind, and through the air, cloudy and serene, and every kind of weather through whom you give sustenance to your creatures.

Praised be you, my Lord, through Sister Water, who is very useful and humble and precious and chaste.

Praised be you, my Lord, through Brother Fire, through whom you light the night, and he is beautiful and playful and robust and strong”.[64]

Today in many places we hear a call for greater security. But until exclusion and inequality in society and between peoples are reversed, it will be impossible to eliminate violence.

The poor and the poorer peoples are accused of violence, yet without equal opportunities the different forms of aggression and conflict will find a fertile terrain for growth and eventually explode.

When a society – whether local, national or global – is willing to leave a part of itself on the fringes, no political programs or resources spent on law enforcement or surveillance systems can indefinitely guarantee tranquility

This is not the case simply because inequality provokes a violent reaction from those excluded from the system, but because the socioeconomic system is unjust at its root.

Just as goodness tends to spread, (so) the toleration of evil, which is injustice, tends to expand its baneful influence and quietly to undermine any political and social system, no matter how solid it may appear.

If every action has its consequences, an evil embedded in the structures of a society has a constant potential for disintegration and death.

Listen, rulers of the nations, govern with justice, for you will be judged by the Lord.

Rulers, if you want to govern successfully, seek Wisdom and she will guide your decisions.

A wise ruler is a blessing for his people. The more wise people there are, the better our world will be.

When I, Solomon, became a ruler,
I prayed for Wisdom. I prayed, and the spirit of Wisdom came to me. In Wisdom's company, all good things came to me.

Lord, please give me the gift of Wisdom

Psalm 106

O give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His great love is without end.

They are happy who do what is right, who at all times remember what is just.

When our ancestors came out of Egypt, they forgot the greatness of God's love.

Each time they strayed, God forgave them. But still they continued to forget God who was their saviour, God who had done such great things for them in Egypt.

O Lord, our God, please don't let us forget your love

2 Timothy 1.6-8

I remind you to fan into a flame the gift that God gave you when I prayed over you with the laying on of hands

God's gift was not a spirit of timidity, but the Spirit of power,
and love and self-control

Never be ashamed of witnessing to the Lord. Like me and with me, put up with hardships for the sake of the Good News

Jesus, help me put up with hardships for the sake of the Good News

Today's Gospel

Matthew 3.1-17

About 30 years after Jesus was born, a man began preaching repentance, and baptizing people in the river Jordan.

This man was John the Baptist.
His message was "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand".

John fulfilled the prophecy: "A voice cries in the wilderness: prepare a way for the Lord".

John said "I baptize you with water, but one is coming who will baptize you with the Holy Spirit".

Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.
After Jesus was baptized, the heavens opened, and Jesus saw the Spirit of God coming down on him like a dove.

And a voice from heaven said
"This is my Son, the Beloved.
My favor rests on him".

Jesus, please help me to prepare your way, like John the Baptist

83: Recording

Here I feel it urgent to state that, if the family is the sanctuary of life, the place where life is conceived and cared for, it is a horrendous contradiction when it becomes a place where life is rejected and destroyed.

So great is the value of a human life, and so inalienable the right to life of an innocent child growing in the mother’s womb, that no alleged right to one’s own body can justify a decision to terminate that life, which is an end in itself and which can never be considered the “property” of another human being.

The family protects human life in all its stages, including its last. Consequently, “those who work in healthcare facilities are reminded of the moral duty of conscientious objection. Similarly, the Church not only feels the urgency to assert the right to a natural death, without aggressive treatment and euthanasia”, but likewise “firmly rejects the death penalty”.93

Breakaway Catholics accuse pope of causing 'painful confusion'
Notice the Pope's words: “I have seen so much loyalty in these cohabitations, so much loyalty, and I’m sure that this is a true marriage. They have the grace of marriage simply because of the loyalty that they have.”

Such couples, he argued, should be accompanied by church pastors and encouraged to enter into a sacramental marriage, not shunned as people living in sin.

Article is a bit misleading: Pope would not recommend cohabitation. But he is seeing goodness where it exists.

Pope's letter on climate change:

86: Recording

The universe as a whole, in all its manifold relationships, shows forth the inexhaustible riches of God.

Saint Thomas Aquinas wisely noted that multiplicity and variety “come from the intention of the first agent” who willed that “what was wanting to one in the representation of the divine goodness might be supplied by another”,[60] inasmuch as God’s goodness “could not be represented fittingly by any one creature”.[61]

Hence we need to grasp the variety of things in their multiple relationships.[62] We understand better the importance and meaning of each creature if we contemplate it within the entirety of God’s plan.

As the Catechism teaches: “God wills the interdependence of creatures. The sun and the moon, the cedar and the little flower, the eagle and the sparrow: the spectacle of their countless diversities and inequalities tells us that no creature is self-sufficient. Creatures exist only in dependence on each other, to complete each other, in the service of each other”.[63]

A financial reform open to such ethical considerations would require a vigorous change of approach on the part of political leaders. I urge them to face this challenge with determination and an eye to the future, while not ignoring, of course, the specifics of each case. Money must serve, not rule!

The Pope loves everyone, rich and poor alike, but he is obliged in the name of Christ to remind all that the rich must help, respect and promote the poor. I exhort you to generous solidarity and to the return of economics and finance to an ethical approach which favours human beings.

  Thursday June 30

I hope readers in other places will excuse me for giving so much space to the July 2 Australian General Election. My aim is to help prevent happening in Australia what is already happening in North America....and what is coming over the horizon in HK and elsewhere

    Australia votes - July 2:

The rainbow people I know - like the homeless gay group I often have a meal with - wouldn't have a clue about the Gay Agenda .... just like the vast majority of Muslims have no connection with radical Islamists.

But the radical rainbows need to be Spotlighted. They have successfully infiltrated political parties and the media around the world.

How sad to see the ALP and Greens doing their bidding. If ever there was a time for the silent majority to vote up, it is this Saturday in the General Election.

A vote for the ALP or for the Greens is a vote for the frightening Gay Agenda, which means disaster for religious schools and religious freedom - as is already happening in North America.

The most important issue facing Australians?

If you ask ALP leader Bill Shorten  his response is loud and clear: Legalising genderless marriage. Watch the video of his announcement here... Nothing relating to health, education or economy.

Wisdom 3-5

When good people die, they are in God's hands. Even if they died a tragic death, they are at peace.

A long life is not what makes a person honorable. Honor is due to anyone of any age who is wise and understanding.

On the other hand, arrogance and misuse of wealth bring dishonor, in this life and in the next.

Our life is short. We must live it wisely and well.

Dear Lord, please help me to live my life wisely and not foolishly

My recording of this reading

Psalm 105

Give thanks to the Lord, make known his deeds among all the peoples.

O sing to him, sing his praise. Tell all his wonderful works.

Be proud of his holy name. Let hearts that seek the Lord rejoice.

Never forget how the Lord has helped us in the past, how he has protected Israel from its beginning till now.

Dear God, please help me understand how you have been loving and protecting me since the beginning of my life

Today's Gospel:

Matthew 2.13-23

After the wise men left Bethlehem, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and said

"Go quickly to Egypt, because Herod wants to kill the child".

That same night, Joseph got up
and set out for Egypt with Mary and Jesus.

Herod was angry after being tricked by the wise men. He got his soldiers to kill all baby boys two years old or younger in Bethlehem.

After Herod died some months later, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him to return to Israel.

Joseph, Mary and Jesus moved to the town of Nazareth, thus fulfilling the prophecy about the Saviour: "He will be called a Nazarene".

Jesus, you were once a refugee.

The Synod Fathers stated that “the growth of a mentality that would reduce the generation of human life to one variable of an individual’s or a couple’s plans is clearly evident”.90

The Church’s teaching is meant to “help couples to experience in a complete, harmonious and conscious way their communion as husband and wife, together with their responsibility for procreating life. We need to return to the message of the Encyclical Humanae Vitae of Blessed Pope Paul VI, which highlights the need to respect the dignity of the person in morally assessing methods of regulating birth… The choice of adoption or foster parenting can also express that fruitfulness which is a characteristic of married life”.91

With special gratitude the Church “supports families who accept, raise and surround with affection children with various disabilities”.92

God has written a precious book, “whose letters are the multitude of created things present in the universe”.[54]

The Canadian bishops rightly pointed out that no creature is excluded from this manifestation of God: “From panoramic vistas to the tiniest living form, nature is a constant source of wonder and awe. It is also a continuing revelation of the divine”.[55]

The bishops of Japan, for their part, made a thought-provoking observation: “To sense each creature singing the hymn of its existence is to live joyfully in God’s love and hope”.[56]

Behind this attitude lurks a rejection of ethics and a rejection of God.

Ethics has come to be viewed with a certain scornful derision. It is seen as counterproductive, too human, because it makes money and power relative. It is felt to be a threat, since it condemns the manipulation and debasement of the person. In effect, ethics leads to a God who calls for a committed response which is outside the categories of the marketplace.

When these latter are absolutized, God can only be seen as uncontrollable, unmanageable, even dangerous, since he calls human beings to their full realization and to freedom from all forms of enslavement.

Ethics – a non-ideological ethics – would make it possible to bring about balance and a more humane social order.

With this in mind, I encourage financial experts and political leaders to ponder the words of one of the sages of antiquity: “Not to share one’s wealth with the poor is to steal from them and to take away their livelihood. It is not our own goods which we hold, but theirs”.

c.f. readings for Feast of Peter & Paul

Acts 12.1-17

About this time, King Herod began persecuting the church. He beheaded the apostle James, brother of John. He arrested Peter during Passover time. He put Peter in prison and planned to have him put on trial and killed after Passover

Each day Peter was in prison, the believers stormed heaven praying for him. On the night before he was to be put on trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, fastened with chains, with more soldiers at the prison entrance

Suddenly Peter's cell was filled with light, and an angel told him to get up. The chains fell from his hands. The angel led Peter out of the prison, without the guards knowing what was happening

Peter then left for another place. Herod was unable to find him

Jesus then said to Peter "Blessed are you, for my Father in heaven has revealed this to you.

A child deserves to be born of that love, and not by any other means, for “he or she is not something owed to one, but is a gift”,87 which is “the fruit of the specific act of the conjugal love of the parents”.88

This is the case because, “according to the order of creation, conjugal love between a man and a woman, and the transmission of life are ordered to each other (cf. Gen 1:27-28).

Thus the Creator made man and woman share in the work of his creation and, at the same time, made them instruments of his love, entrusting to them the responsibility for the future of mankind, through the transmission of human life”.89

Our insistence that each human being is an image of God should not make us overlook the fact that each creature has its own purpose. None is superfluous.

The entire material universe speaks of God’s love, his boundless affection for us. Soil, water, mountains: everything is, as it were, a caress of God.

The history of our friendship with God is always linked to particular places which take on an intensely personal meaning; we all remember places, and revisiting those memories does us much good.

Anyone who has grown up in the hills or used to sit by a spring to drink, or played outdoors in a neighbourhood square; going back to these places is a chance to recover something of their true selves.

While the earnings of a minority are growing exponentially, so too is the gap separating the majority from the prosperity enjoyed by those happy few.

This imbalance is the result of ideologies which defend the absolute autonomy of the marketplace and financial speculation.

Consequently, they reject the right of states, charged with vigilance for the common good, to exercise any form of control.

A new tyranny is thus born, invisible and often virtual, which unilaterally and relentlessly imposes its own laws and rules.

Debt and the accumulation of interest also make it difficult for countries to realize the potential of their own economies and keep citizens from enjoying their real purchasing power.

To all this we can add widespread corruption and self-serving tax evasion, which have taken on worldwide dimensions. The thirst for power and possessions knows no limits.

In this system, which tends to devour everything which stands in the way of increased profits, whatever is fragile, like the environment, is defenseless before the interests of a deified market, which become the only rule.

Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem, during the reign of King Herod.

Some months after Jesus' birth,
several  wise men from the East came to Jerusalem.

They said  "Where is the infant king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose and we have come to offer him honor."

King Herod felt threatened by this news. He knew from the Scriptures  that the promised Saviour would be born in Bethlehem.

So Herod sent the wise men to Bethlehem, pretending that he too would like to offer honor to the child.

The wise men headed for Bethlehem, guided by the star. The star filled them with joy. The star stopped over the place where the child was.

The wise men fell to their knees and honored the child. They offered him gifts of gold, incense and myrrh.

Then they returned to their own country by a different way,
having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod.

Jesus, help me to honor you like the wise men

“When faced with difficult situations and wounded families, it is always necessary to recall this general principle: ‘Pastors must know that, for the sake of truth, they are obliged to exercise careful discernment of situations’ (Familiaris Consortio, 84).

The degree of responsibility is not equal in all cases, and factors may exist which limit the ability to make a decision. Therefore, while clearly stating the Church’s teaching, pastors are to avoid judgements that do not take into account the complexity of various situations, and they are to be attentive, by necessity, to how people experience and endure distress because of their condition”.79

The ultimate destiny of the universe is in the fullness of God, which has already been attained by the risen Christ, the measure of the maturity of all things.[53]

Here we can add yet another argument for rejecting every tyrannical and irresponsible domination of human beings over other creatures. The ultimate purpose of other creatures is not to be found in us. Rather, all creatures are moving forward with us and through us towards a common point of arrival, which is God, in that transcendent fullness where the risen Christ embraces and illumines all things.

Human beings, endowed with intelligence and love, and drawn by the fullness of Christ, are called to lead all creatures back to their Creator.

One cause of this situation is found in our relationship with money, since we calmly accept its dominion over ourselves and our societies

The current financial crisis can make us overlook the fact that it originated in a profound human crisis: the denial of the primacy of the human person!

We have created new idols. The worship of the ancient golden calf has returned in a new and ruthless guise in the idolatry of money and the dictatorship of an impersonal economy lacking a truly human purpose.

The worldwide crisis affecting finance and the economy lays bare their imbalances and, above all, their lack of real concern for human beings; man is reduced to one of his needs alone: consumption.
