Tues Jan 25

Hello from St Paul's House of Prayer where I'm attending the monthly O.M.I. meeting for HK Oblates. We arrived yesterday afternoon and are pleased to be here on a feast of St Paul (see below, readings). After the meeting finishes with lunch today, I hope to visit nearby Lo Wu women's prison to hand in some items (... glasses, IDD cards, text books etc) ....chaplains not allowed to visit at the moment because of Covid restrictions, but I hope I can at least hand in my shopping list!

On  this day in 1816 in France was born the group that became the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. A good day for HK Oblates to be together!

c.f. readings for Feast of Conversion of St Paul

Isaiah 51-52: Pay attention to me, you peoples. Listen to me, you nations. The islands put their hope in the Lord. They put their trust in his strength. How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace and salvation, and tells Zion "Your God is king!" Break into shouts of joy, you ruins of Jerusalem, for the Lord is redeeming his people. All the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
Lord, may more and more people in more and more countries know you and love you.

My recording of this reading

Psalm  117: O Praise the Lord, all you nations. Acclaim him, all you peoples! Strong is his love for us. He is faithful for ever.
May all the nations love and praise you, Lord

Recording

Acts 9.1-19: Paul kept up his campaign against the Lord's disciples. He got the ok to arrest followers of the Way in Damascus. But on his way to Damascus, a light from heaven surrounded him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying "Paul, Paul, why are you persecuting me?" He said "Who are you, Lord?" The voice replied "I am Jesus, and you are persecuting me. Go into Damascus and you will be told what to do". Paul's eyes were open, but for more than a day he was without his sight, and he ate and drank nothing. The Lord got Ananias, a disciple in Damascus, to visit Paul and pray for him. The Lord said to Ananias "Paul  is my chosen instrument to bring my name to non-Jews and Jews. He will suffer much for me". Ananias went to Paul and prayed for him with the laying on of hands. Straight away, Paul could see again. Then Ananias baptized him.
Jesus, please help me understand how unkindness to others is unkindness to you

Recording

Mark 16.9-20: After he rose from the dead, Jesus appeared first to Mary of Magdala, from whom he had cast out 7 devils. Next  he appeared to two of his disciples while they were on a journey. Then he appeared to the 11 apostles. He said to them "Go everywhere in the world. Proclaim the Good News to all creation. Anyone who believes and is baptized, will be saved. Anyone who refuses to believe, will be condemned. These are the signs that will be associated with believers: in my name they will cast out devils, they will have the gift of tongues, they will pick up snakes in their hands, they will be unharmed if they drink poison, they will lay their hands on the sick, who will be healed". And so, the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up to heaven, while they, going out, preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming their message by the miracles that accompanied the message
Lord Jesus, may more and more people all over the world believe in you

A mega prison for HK? (... not the first time a mega prison has been suggested)

As the world continues to be devastated by Covid, there's growing urgency to find out the source of the pandemic .... with a suggestion that the ingredients used to produce the virus (if it began in a lab ... and that's not 100% certain) might be used to stop it ... if full info about those ingredients could be made public: * Wuhan lab leak likely * Did US fund risky Wuhan research? * Wuhan leak funded by US? * This report has map showing that Wuhan lab is very close to Wuhan Covid market

1 Kings 1: When King David was very old and near the end of his life, Absalom's brother Adonijah plotted to become king. The prophet Nathan therefore advised Bathsheba to go to David and remind him that he had promised to let Bathsheba's son Solomon become king. David then summoned the priests and royal guards and ordered them and Nathan to anoint Solomon as king.
Dear God, please give the world good leaders

My recording of this reading

Psalm 149:
Sing a new song to the Lord. Let the praise of God be always on our lips. Praise God in his holy temple. Praise him in the heavens. O praise him with sound of trumpet. Praise him with lute and harp. Praise him with drums and dancing. Praise him with strings and pipes. Let everything that lives and breathes, give praise to the Lord our Creator.  Alleluia!
Lord, to you we say every day "Allelu-ia" ("praise God")

Philippians 1.1-9: From Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all the believers in the Church at Philippi. We wish you the grace and peace of God our Father and of the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank God whenever I think of you. Every time I pray for you, I pray with joy, remembering how you helped to spread the Good News. You have a permanent place in my heart. God knows how much I miss you. I love you as Christ Jesus loves you. My prayer is that your love for each other will increase more and more, helping you always to know what is good and to avoid what is bad
Jesus, thank you for all the people who have a permanent place in my heart

Matthew 9.35-37: Jesus went to many towns and villages. In the local prayer halls he taught people the Good News of God's kingdom.
He healed all sorts of diseases and sicknesses.
He felt sorry for the ordinary people because they were like sheep without a shepherd
- leaderless, exploited, and feeling hopeless. He said to his friends: "So many people don't have good leaders. Pray to God to send good leaders".
Jesus, many countries have bad leaders. Please help every country to have good leaders

c.f. readings for Sunday 3

Nehemiah 7-13: The wall of Jerusalem was finally rebuilt and doors were set in place in the wall. In the seventh month of the lunar calendar Nehemiah assembled all the people and read to them the Book of the Law of Moses. This was the first time that most of the people had heard the words of Moses' Book. The people were grateful to God and praised him with great happiness. The people also promised God that they would serve him more faithfully in the future. But while Nehemiah was away on a visit  to the king the people and leaders became careless about the Law. When  Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem he brought the people back to proper observance of the Law
Dear God, may we find joy and strength in reading the Bible and may the world have more good leaders like Nehemiah

My recording of this reading

Psalm 19: The heavens proclaim the glory of God, the starry skies are the work of his hands. The stars can't speak, but they are God's handwriting. The sun is God's love shining on the whole world. The universe is a masterpiece, and so is God's law which shines in our hearts. The precepts of the Lord enlighten our lives each day. The law of the Lord gives joy and wisdom to our hearts. The decrees of the Lord are to be desired more than gold, they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. But  often we are unaware of  our errors. Lord, please protect us from making mistakes.
Lord, may the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart  be pleasing to you

 Listen

1 Corinthians 12.12-30: A human body is made of many parts: arms, legs, muscles, eyes etc. Every part is important and needed for the body to be healthy. The church is like a body. We are the body's members. Some of us are apostles, some prophets, some teachers etc. The members of the church must care about every member of the church. Everyone is important. The spiritual health of each member affects the health of the whole body
Jesus, help me understand how your church is like a human body

 Listen

Luke 1.1-4: Dear Friend of God, there are  already many  reports written about Jesus. These reports come from  people who were the earliest eyewitnesses and ministers of the Good News. After checking the whole story, I also have decided to write a report, so that you may see for yourself the truth and accuracy of the Good News.
Jesus, help me understand your Good News

 Listen

Reflection on the above readings:  Today we speak of "fake news". Truth is a casualty when people circulate fake news. The writings of people like Nehemiah and Luke help us know what is true and what is false. Today is also "Word of God" Sunday .... when we especially remember how the Bible is our basic source and standard of truth

2 Samuel 16-24: When David was living in exile, some people helped him, some people insulted him. To insult his father and to claim the kingship Absalom publicly had sex with his father's concubines. Gradually David was able to re-build his army and his army defeated Absalom's soldiers in battle. In that battle, Absalom died and David mourned his death for a long time. Eventually David was able to become king of all Israel again.
Dear God, may Israel be a land of peace
My recording of this reading

Psalm 148: Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise him in the heights. Praise him all his angels, praise him all his spirits. Praise him, sun and moon, praise him, shining stars. Let them praise the name of the Lord. His word gave life to all of them. Praise the Lord from the earth, sea creatures and all oceans. Praise him fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy winds that obey his word. Praise him all mountains and hills, all fruit trees and cedars. Praise him all animals, wild and tame, reptiles and birds in the air. Praise him all earth's kings and peoples, earth's princes and rulers. Praise him young men and maidens, old people together with children. Let them praise the name of the Lord. He is the praise of all who love him.
Lord our God and Creator, you are worthy of all praise

Listen

Colossians 1.1-6: From Paul, appointed by God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, to the Christians in Colossae. Grace and peace to you from God our Father. I always pray for you and give thanks for your faith in Christ Jesus, and the love you show to others because of the hope which is stored up for you in heaven. The Good News is spreading all over the world, bringing blessings to so many people
Jesus, increase my faith, hope and love. Help me  spread the Good News in my corner of the world

Listen

Matthew 9.27-31As Jesus walked along, two men who had become blind followed after him calling out  "Son of David, please help us". Jesus asked them "Do you believe I can help you?" They said "Yes we do". Then Jesus touched their eyes and said "Your request made in faith is granted". Immediately they were able to see again. They told everyone they met  what Jesus had done for them.
Jesus, heal my friend (..name..) who is blind

2 Samuel 14-15: When David had finished his time of mourning for Amnon, he allowed Absalom to return to Jerusalem. Only after two years did David agree to meet Absalom. He met him and pardoned him. But as time went on Absalom started to plot against David. Absalom  gathered enough supporters to overthrow David. David found out about the plot and fled from Jerusalem. David was very sad and prayed to God that someday he could return to Jerusalem.
Dear God, please help  people who are exiled from their homes

My recording of this reading

Psalm 147: Praise the Lord for he is good. Sing to our God for he is loving. To him our praise is due. The Lord builds up Jerusalem and brings back Israel's exiles. He heals the broken-hearted and binds up all their wounds. The Lord raises the lowly and humbles the wicked. He fixes the number of the stars. He calls each one by name. Our Lord is great and almighty. His wisdom can never be measured. He covers the heavens with clouds. He prepares rain for the earth, making mountains sprout with grass and with plants to serve our needs. His delight is not in horses nor his pleasure in warriors' strength. The Lord delights in those who love and honor him,
in those who wait for his love.

It is right and fitting to praise and love you, Lord our Creator

Listen

Ephesians 6.18-24: Pray all the time, asking for what you need. Pray in the Spirit on every possible occasion. Never tire of praying. Pray for me that I may proclaim the Good News boldly. Grace and eternal life to everyone who loves our Lord Jesus Christ
Jesus, help me to put Paul's teaching into practice in my life

Listen

Matthew 9.18-26: A prayer hall official came to Jesus and said "My daughter has just died. Please come and lay your hand on her and she will come back to life". As Jesus and his friends were following the official to his home, a woman who had a hemorrhage for 12 years came up behind Jesus and touched his clothing. The woman had said to herself  "If I can even touch his clothing, I will be healed". Jesus knew what she was doing and said to her "My daughter, your faith has healed you". Instantly she was healed. When Jesus arrived at the official's house he saw a crowd of people crying loudly. Jesus said to them "Get out of the house. The little girl is asleep, not dead".  The crowd laughed at Jesus. After the crowd had gone outside, Jesus went inside. He took the little girl by the hand, and she stood up. News of what had happened spread all round the district.
Jesus, please increase my faith in your power to heal the sick and raise the dead

2 Samuel 13: David had many wives and concubines. One of his sons, Amnon, fell in love with his step-sister Tamar and raped her. King David was very angry about this but did not punish Amnon, since he loved him. Amnon was his first-born son. But another son, Absalom, Tamar's full brother, hated Amnon and killed him. Absalom fled for three years to another land. All that time the king mourned for Amnon.

Psalm 146: My soul, give praise to the Lord. I will praise the Lord all my days. Put no trust in princes, in mortal men in whom there is no help. Take their breath, they return to clay and their plans that day come to nothing. They are happy who are helped by Jacob's God, whose hope is in the Lord our God, who alone made heaven and earth, the seas and all they contain. It is he who gives bread to the hungry, the Lord, who sets prisoners free. It is the Lord who gives sight to the blind, who raises up those who are bowed down. It is the Lord who protects the stranger and upholds the widow and orphan. It is the Lord who loves the just but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for ever, Zion's God, from age to age.
Lord, please increase my trust and faith in you

Out of date religious structures need a drastic overhaul, not just external plastic surgery."

2 Samuel 12: The Lord sent the prophet Nathan to David. Nathan said: "Why did you do what is displeasing to the Lord?" David replied: "I have sinned against the Lord." Nathan said: "The Lord forgives you, but because of your sin, the child will die." After the child died, Bathsheba conceived another son by David, whom she named Solomon. The Lord specially blessed Solomon.
"Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness. In your compassion blot out my offence"
(David's prayer in Psalm 51)

My recording of this reading

Psalm 145: I will give you glory, O God my king. I will bless your name day after day. The Lord is great, worthy of all praise. His greatness cannot be measured. Age to age shall proclaim your works, shall speak of your splendor and glory. The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all, compassionate to all his creatures. All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord, and tell all the world of your love. The Lord is faithful in all his words and loving in all his deeds. The Lord supports all who fall and raises all who are bowed down. The eyes of all creatures look to you and you give them their food each day. The Lord is close to all who call him, who call on him from their hearts. Let the whole world bless the Lord's holy name, for ever, for ages unending.
Thank you, Lord, for your love. Thank you for your love

Matthew 9.9-13: One day when Jesus was walking past a customs house he said to a tax collector  named Matthew "Follow me".
Matthew got up and followed Jesus. Matthew invited Jesus and Jesus' friends to a dinner in his house. Some tax collectors and  "bad" people sat at Jesus' table. Religious leaders saw this and complained to Jesus' friends "Why does your master eat with tax collectors and bad people?" Jesus' answer was  "It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick. Go and think about the Bible words 'What I want is mercy, not sacrifice'. I have a special concern for rejects and down-and-outs."

On this 19th of the month, Jesus please bless the people of Sudan

And praying for one Islam-related intention each day of the week:
Jesus, today,
