Pope Francis is under attack from extreme Traditionalists
(I say extreme, because there are moderate Traditionalists who would not dream of such slander).
Comment from reader: "The levels of resentment, anger and hatred directed towards Pope Francis are evident and people should be made aware that this kind of fabrication and lying is going on in the name of Christ and the Church"

What can we do?  Pray...pray each day for the Pope, asking God to give him good health, courage, wisdom and protection from enemies within and without. My own custom is to pick up a few bits of rubbish each morning as a prayer for the Pope:

Rich people just care less

Since the 1970s, the gap between the rich and everyone else has skyrocketed. Income inequality is at its highest level in a century. This widening gulf between the haves and have-less troubles me, but not for the obvious reasons. Apart from the financial inequities, I fear the expansion of an entirely different gap, caused by the inability to see oneself in a less advantaged person’s shoes. Reducing the economic gap may be impossible without also addressing the gap in empathy

How do the rich become richer and the poor become poorer?
Well, last night I met a man now living on the street because his landlord recently greatly increased his rent. Many little shops in my area have closed down because greedy landlords have "upped" the rent too much.

Where are the government laws to control rent prices?
Where are the politicians who care about this issue?
Where are the citizens to put pressure on politicians to care?

Feast of Saint Luke

Let's open our Bibles today for a quick tour through St Luke's Gospel and his Acts of the Apostles, noting especially the first few lines of each work....and noting Luke's emphasis on care for the poor

Each day brings new reports of the poor getting poorer, the rich showing less and less compassion for the poor ...what Pope Francis calls The Globalisation of Indifference

How can we reverse this trend? How can we stop this creeping  callousness?  Pope Francis is flying the flag of compassion...may his brave voice make a difference

St Luke's Gospel is called "The Gospel of the Poor" because of Luke's focus on the poor...may it's message make a difference

Maybe some day someone can produce a "little red book"  style "Little Poor Book" with the main Bible teachings about the poor
....and this can be used in schools and other places to make a difference. Book could include key Church teachings on the poor

Feast of Saint Ignatius of Antioch

I am writing to all the Churches and I enjoin all, that I am dying willingly for God's sake, if only you do not prevent it. I beg you, do not do me an untimely kindness. Allow me to be eaten by the beasts, which are my way of reaching to God. I am God's wheat, and I am to be ground by the teeth of wild beasts, so that I may become the pure bread of Christ.

Reflection on October 29 Sunday readings:
Grant us justice, O Lord
We live in a world where criminals receive state funerals with laudatory speeches while their victims are reduced to oblivion. Our history books are written by the ‘secular priests’ working for the victors. Truth gets lost under the garbage of lies. And yet, as the parable rightly tells us, we should not give up our cry for justice

Republicans are delusional about US spending and deficits

A poor man was poaching lobsters at a beach. A game warden, his first day on the job, saw him and said: ‘I’m going to have to arrest you. Poaching is illegal.’ ‘I’m not poaching lobsters,’ the man said. ‘These are my pets. I’m exercising them. I throw them into the sea, then whistle, and they come back.’ ‘Show me,’ the warden said in disbelief. The man threw the lobsters into the water and started to walk away. ‘Wait!’ the warden shouted. ‘Don’t you have to whistle to call your lobsters back?’ The man looked at the warden, paused, and said, ‘What lobsters?’

Fragmentation in the West proceeds at a pace. We see it in the breakup up of political parties where smaller groups are emerging representing a narrow platform of opinion. We see it in a society where often those who are already poor, get poorer and those who have wealth increase their considerable fortunes. We see it when smaller parts of a Nation seek independence, pursuing an ethnic or language based identity.

And where is the Christian Church in this, often chaotic, diversity?
